Newsbytes -Heavy Snowfall Rejuvenates Himalayan Glaciers

via the GWPF and Dr. Benny Peiser

New Evidence Undermines Climate Alarmism

With high-altitude mountains in Himachal Pradesh experiencing up to 100 cm fresh snowfall in November month after 10 years, the abundance of snow on mountains has rejuvenated nearly one thousand Himalayan glaciers and has ensured uninterrupted supply of water for drinking, irrigation and hydel projects. While scanty snowfall and rising temperature in the last decade had sparked the possibilities of fast shrinking of glaciers, good spells of snowfall in last three years have changed the trend with glaciers almost growing to their original size. –Suresh Sharma, The Times of India, 3 December 2012

A new analysis of data from dedicated satellites shows that one of the main factors predicted to drive rising sea levels in future has been seriously overestimated, with major implications for climate talks currently underway in Doha. –Lewis Page, The Register, 28 November 2012

When the Atlantic hurricane season starts next June 1, it will have been 2,777 days since the last time an intense (that is a Category 3, 4 or 5) hurricane made landfall along the US coast (Wilma in 2005). Such a prolonged period without an intense hurricane landfall has not been observed since 1900. The long-term intense hurricane drought means that a mere “regression to the mean” will see more hurricane landfalls and considerably higher damage in the years to come. The fashionable talk these days of a “new normal” is of course utter bullsh*t. Just wait until we return to the “old normal” — I know that it may be hard to believe, but both hurricane damage and climate hype are set to increase dramatically in the years to come. —Roger Pielke Jr., 3 December 2012

When the worst drought in 60 years hit America’s corn belt this summer, many people wondered if it was caused by climate change. It is too early to say much about such a recent episode but various studies have attributed earlier individual heatwaves or drought to global warming, notably those in Europe in 2003, Russia in 2010 and the sweltering summer of 2011 in Texas. The most recent (2007) assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said bluntly: “higher temperatures and decreased precipitation have contributed to changes in drought.” Global warming might cause drought because warm air holds on to water vapour, making rain even less likely in places that are already dry. But a study published recently in Nature casts doubt about whether that is actually happening. —The Economist, 1 December 2012

A paper published today in The Journal of Climate reconstructs snow accumulation of the Greenland ice sheet from 1600-2009 and finds “a 12% or 86 Gigaton/yr increase in ice sheet accumulation rate from the end of the Little Ice Age in ~1840 to the last decade of the reconstruction. This 1840-1996 trend is 30% higher than that of 1600-2009, suggesting an accelerating accumulation rate.” —The Hockey Schtick, 6 December 2012

Hmmm, one wonders how long it will be until someone issues a press statement that the increased snowfall in the Himalaya’s is entirely consistent with CAGW…

Who would have ever thought that glaciers are caused by snowfall and the amounts can vary enormously from year to year. Someone needs to tell the IPCC.

Looks like it might be better than we thought …… .

How normal!. This is how gallerias grow or are sustained over the long run. It has nothing to do with ±1 or 2 degrees C annual average. It has to do with how much or little snow accumulates.

I’ve always noticed, they talk about ice melt right and left, but research that speaks of the Gains being made at the same time, is never mentioned.

Thanks for the link Stuart. This part of the article jumped out at me…

Almora’s G B Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development’s senior scientist J C Kuniyal said apart from reviving the glaciers, this year’s record snowfall would also boost the crop cycle. “It is difficult to understand the environment. As we start talking about the dry winters, record snowfall levels stunned everyone,” he said.

Next. The ice age is coming. This winter may well become the winter of discontent. I sure am cranky toward the twits who are still trying to snuffle up to the public trough or seize a little more power, pushing this fear of the weather scam.
What of the original doomsday conjecture is left?
Unprecedented temperature increase? Medieval warm period is back, Briffa has recanted, Jones had to concede, nothing unusual and the Mann staggers on.(Did he just tape kick me on his own back?)
Increasing CO2=warming world? MET no temperature increase in 16 yrs= CO2 emissions growing over same period. Suggestion of cooling these last years.
Our computer models show it will warm? None dare mention reality.
The ice caps are melting? Yes and No. Air temps do not appear to correlate with ice loss.
Refresh my memory here, is all that is left is , our computed version is more correct than reality?
In the latest squall of hype and hysteria, I hear nothing new, much that is shamanistic and a lot of blatant nonsense. This scam might be coming unglued way faster than I thought possible.
Once the fear mongers are down to blaming weather on warming, they have admitted defeat.
Or is the claim still that global warming causes everything?

December 6, 2012 12:44 pm

Its worse for them than they thought.. Reality doesn’t want to follow the models, nor the propaganda..

And how ironic that given this, all of that warm and moist air is uhm ALSO blamed for the droughts. Warmists can have it both ways. Living in Liberal CA, I have to remind people that the drought in the midwest caused the higher temperatures, not the other way around! Dry air warms and cools faster since there is no latent heat from water in the air to mediate the temperature.

What has happened is that previous estimates have been shown to be wrong by better data from satellites. I checked Indian sources and 3 out of the last 4 monsoons have been below average in Himachal Pradesh.
Being a climate scientist means never having to admit you were wrong.

for what it’s worth:
6 Dec: China Daily: Massive sea ice spotted off East China coast
BEIJING – The National Marine Forecasting Station on Thursday reported large chunks of sea ice floating near Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea for the first time this winter, warning local fishery industries and port businesses to be wary of the ice.
The total area of the ice spans 10 nautical miles, the station said, adding that sea ice has also been spotted in the northern Yellow Sea.
The station said the size of the sea ice in both areas may expand over the next week, which may disrupt fishery, aquaculture and shipping operations.

I love reading some of the comments from the Q&A section of the Guardian on this. Lots of stuff about how “deniers” will use this study i.e data, to insist that the AGW theory is false.
