Announcement: WUWT-TV to counter Al Gore's '24 Hours of Climate Reality' with live webcast

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  10/29/12

WUWT-TV to debut on November 14th to counter Al Gore’s “Dirty Weather Telethon” on November 14th and 15th starting at 8PM EST (5PM PST)

Al Gore is forming another 24 hour media event on November 14th, focusing on “dirty weather”, which you can read about here. It is yet another example of what has been called “Tabloid Climatology”.

Gore’s program is another transparent attempt to link climate and weather, and to make people fearful of common weather events that we’ve seen all throughout history. WUWT hosted a 24 hour event last year, thanks to the talents of our contributing cartoonist, Josh.  You can review that here.

Last year during his “24 Hours of Climate Reality”, Mr. Gore created a video called “Climate 101” in which he purported to show a laboratory experiment showing the warming effects of CO2. Unfortunately it was discovered that Mr. Gore fabricated the experimental results using video post production techniques. You can read about it and see the evidence here:

Video analysis and scene replication suggests that Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project fabricated their Climate 101 video “Simple Experiment”

and

Replicating Al Gore’s Climate 101 video experiment shows that his “high school physics” could never work as advertised

Due to Mr. Gore broadcasting fabricated and impossible science experiments, and then failing to correct the video even when glaringly obvious falsifications were pointed out, and partly due to WUWT’s founder Anthony Watts recent interview (and backlash) on PBS Newshour, a donor has stepped forward and offered to equip WUWT for professional Live TV over the Internet and has purchased a complete web enabled TV studio setup for use this year, seen here:

http://www.newtek.com/products/tricaster-40.html

It includes two cameras, live video over net input, and live graphics/slideshow input.

It has been tested and has succeeded a 24 hour live web broadcast burn in period. When in production, the WUWT-TV web channel will have all of the elements of a professional TV production.

During the event, WUWT-TV will be able to conduct live video interviews via Skype online video, plus will feature simultaneous PowerPoint presentations run in high quality HD to go with the live interview, while the guest narrates. These can be full screen or split screen depending on the setting.

PowerPoint presentations will be pre-loaded into the system, and to facilitate remote control, WUWT has engineered a remote ‘clicker’ that allows guest presenters to control the presentation from their end, using a web page with a forward and back button on it.

WUWT-TV has invited a number of individuals to give presentations, here is the list so far.

SCHEDULED TO APPEAR:

Andrew Montford (Author of The Hockey Stick Illusion)

Richard Lindzen (Alfred P. Sloan professor of Meteorology, MIT)

Marc Morano (Climate Depot)

John Coleman  (Founder of the Weather Channel, now at KUSI-TV)

Chris Horner (Senior Fellow, Center for Energy and Environment, CEI)

Steve McIntyre (editor of ClimateAudit.org)

Dr. Ross McKitrick (University of Guelph)

John Christy (Alabama State climatologist, co author of UAH dataset)

Joe D’Aleo (WeatherBell)

Joe Bastardi  (Weatherbell)

Senator Jim Inhofe

Bob Tisdale (author of Who Turned on The Heat?)

Dr. Ryan Maue (Weatherbell)

Burt Rutan, (Engineer and Aviation Pioneer)

Dr. Sebastian Lüning  (co-author of Die kalte Sonne)

Harold Ambler (Author of Don’t Sell Your Coat)

Donna LaFramboise (Author of The Delinquent Teenager)

Pat Michaels (former State climatologist of Virgina, fellow of the Cato institute)

Pete Garcia (Producer of the movie The Boy Who Cried Warming)

Christopher Monckton (SPPI)

Invited but still undecided or have not returned RSVP:

Judith Curry (may appear by pre-recorded presentation she offered)

Burt Rutan (no reply)

John Kehr (no reply)

David Stockwell  (no reply)

Jo Nova  (undecided)

Dr. David Evans (no reply)

Zeke Hausfather, BEST (undecided)

Invited but declined:

Dr. Walt Meir, NSIDC (declined)

Dr. Roger Pielke Sr. (conflicting commitments prevent appearance)

Dr. Roger Pielke Jr. (declined but offered supplemental materials)

Bill McKibben (declined due to other commitments)

There are still a few slots open. For those on the opposite side of the debate, as well as those on the skeptic side we invite you to participate, and welcome slide and narrative presentations from 15 minutes to 1 hour in length.

For questions or to request a time slot, please use the contact form if you will be able to participate. Given that Mr. Gore wants to sell the American public on ‘dirty weather’, which we know is an act of desperation, unsupported by the current state of the science (see this Nature editorial on the lack of linkage between climate and extreme weather) your voice will be particularly important.

If you cannot participate live during that time, we can arrange to pre-record the segment and play it at the appropriate time on November 14th or 15th. All that is required is a functional webcam (with headset preferred for best audio quality) A Skype account, and a short PowerPoint presentation or video clip.

Anthony-
Waddya mean “…..Mr. Gore wants to sell the American public on ‘dirty weather’, which we know is an act of desperation, unsupported by the current state of the science…..”
Kevin Trenberth has written:
“The sea surface temperatures along the Atlantic coast have been running at over 3C above normal for a region extending 800km off shore all the way from Florida to Canada. Global warming contributes 0.6C to this. With every degree C, the water holding of the atmosphere goes up 7%, and the moisture provides fuel for the tropical storm, increases its intensity, and magnifies the rainfall by double that amount compared with normal conditions.
“Global climate change has contributed to the higher sea surface and ocean temperatures, and a warmer and moister atmosphere, and its effects are in the range of 5 to 10%. Natural variability and weather has provided the perhaps optimal conditions of a hurricane running into extra-tropical conditions to make for a huge intense storm, enhanced by global warming influences.”
This I learned through “The Conversation”; you can see the full story at: tinyurl.com/9y3p72u
If you go to the Conversation home page you can read:
“We are funded by CSIRO, Melbourne, Monash, RMIT, UTS, UWA, Canberra, CDU, Deakin, Flinders, Griffith, La Trobe, Murdoch, QUT, Swinburne, UniSA, UTAS, UWS and VU.”
Does this mean that my PG degree from Melbourne Univ is worthless?
IanM
P.S. Congratulations on arranging the broadcast!

KevinM
October 29, 2012 1:25 pm

I’d like a diversity of views. Conversational format is good, but as we’ve seen with the presidential debates posturing can overwhelm content. I wish to see alternating half hour segments, starting with a general view from either side then free form responses by believers and doubters in unmoderated alternation.
It is clear that Mann, Hansen, Gore et. al. would reject my format, but we’ve already heard their lectures anyway. I’d accept a list of second-tier warmists. The claim would go out “is that the best you could do? Beating up on the B-list?”, however I suspect the B-list is better armed to make a rational argument anyway; they are less encumbered by old baggage. Also, who cares what the critics might say. The purpose should be to produce quality work.

It’s not enjoyable to see both sides competing to see who can “shout louder” at the same time. This is especially true when Gore may possess a bigger megaphone than Watts. Is either side likely to reach anyone besides irreversibly-committed supporters?
I’m personally more interested in your ability to rebut Gore (such as the fake CO2 experiment) than your attempts to out-shout him. Please save some energy for that.

Few suggestions:
Why not call it “It’s Just The Weather and Not The Climate” and make a clear point about what the IPCC calls climate = 30 years or more of data.
Pull up you graphs showing weather events – no trends (graphs really are the killer).
Put it on Youtube.
Put up a page for it now so people can spread the link widely before it airs.
Good luck, this is just what the doctor ordered.

Hi Anthony. I know you’re probably busy getting everything lined up, but if you have time, you may want to set up a 2 – 3 minute video introducing the event, the participants and some of the items that will be covered. If you posted that to YouTube and linked it here, we could all share that video as an announcement through social media to get it in front of more people. I, as I’m sure many others, would be glad to share that video on Twitter and Facebook. This needs to be in front of a lot of people and hopefully the intro would have some of the “Why” weather is simply weather and not global warming.
MSNBC just showed a shot of Sandy and made some idiotic statement about right-wingers trying to keep people in the dark about this “massive” climate change created hurricane. What people should hear is the global warming crowd want people in the dark, literally, and storms have happened like this many times in history.
Thanks for everything you do!

See if there is any one who understands what the old people of Chaco Canyon of New Mexico were doing trying to track the sun and moon cycles. Some chance they too needed long term knowledge of the weather as they lived out in it for 10,000’s of years.
The rocks of the sun, moon cycles.
Without knowledge of the long term weather patterns could be you would end up with the whole of a people starving to death. Or they could learn of when to seek better climate some where else.
Those new here do not have all the understanding and knowing.

I’d watch an interview with Willis Eschenbach, on any topic you or he chose, but especially if you went into a detailed discussion of his theory of how water (the hydrology cycle) and especially large tropical storms serve as a built in closed loop regulator of the world wide energy balance. You need to interview more engineers, people who have practical insight and understand the magnitude of contributing factors, than strictly “specialists”. We want Willis, we want Willis . . . .

This is terrific news! I am a bit concerned that you have chosen to launch with such a high profile, but hey, ya gotta start somewhere! Just be ready to be ridiculed for any errors that are sure to occur. There will likely be many. I used to work in live video production millions of years ago and even when we had time to edit there was always some glitch that snuck by. If I had one bit of advice to give it is to have 3 separate guests lined up for each time slot and juggle them as you go. Nothing worse than dead air. That’s what green rooms are for!
Best of luck!

It would be nice to see a memorial and retrospective of John Daly’s work, if anyone has the time to create one.
Oh, and if you are looking to spread wider, you could do a piece on Roger Bacon. He seems to have been the first person to propose that experiment and facts should trump authority – quite a feat for the 1200s, since authority (of the Bible or the Classical authors) was then seen as the only way to acquire wisdom. He effectively invented the concept of science as we know it today, and he fought for all of his life against the ‘science is settled’ approach of our current establishment.
He has his 800th anniversary coming up in 2013, and I believe that no one in world is planning to celebrate it…

Much as I admire James Delingpole, I feel that the broadcast should focus on the science rather than the politics. James is great at exposing the thinking surrounding the environmental politics that we suffer from in the UK but, at this stage, I feel we need to debunk the science and leave the green movement no room to say you are using hyperbole to make your points.
Once the ‘science’ is undermined and the concept of a consensus is proven to be false, the rest of the ideology can be tackled in due course.
Good luck and, as others have said, please ensure there is some kind of archive that those of us in Europe can access after the events.

October 29, 2012 6:25 pm

@ColdOldMan, October 29, 2012 at 4:57 pm ….I feel that the broadcast should focus on the science rather than the politics. …”
I respectfully disagree. Since this issue was politicized from the start in the late ’80s/ early ’90s with the twin unsupportable assertions that the science was settled and skeptics were corrupt, hitting back on only the science is a tactic that does nothing to disarm the baseless accusations against skeptics’ “corruption”. It only breeds more efforts to support the dumb conspiracy idea that Anthony and anybody who speaks with him are fossil fuel industry shills, religious nutcases, free-market zealots, or whatever other domino that’s placed in front of the idea that respectable people may have perfectly valid skepticism about AGW.
If any major headway is to be made in this issue, it must be unequivocally demonstrated that the accusation about skeptics ‘manufacturing doubt’ about settled science instead has every appearance of being specifically consolidated efforts to manufacture doubt about the credibility of skeptics as a ruse to prevent the general public from spotting fatal flaws in AGW. As I suggested last year right here in a WUWT guest post ( http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/06/25/the-end-is-near-for-faith-in-agw/ ), the ‘settled science’ / ‘corrupt skeptics’ only works when there is faith in that whole system, but when that faith is wiped out on BOTH fronts, the whole thing can collapse like a giant ponzi scheme.

It’s very good to have qualified scientists and engineers on board to give technical background to the topic of Global Warming, whether this be Natural, Anthropogenic, Catastrophic Anthropogenic or Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change and so forth and so on.
The problem, as I see it, Is not the concept of warming itself (the yes, no or maybe responses) but rather the political, cultural and economic responses to the implication that warming (the only part of “climate change” that will kill us according to the meme) will be a disaster. Now, if an asteroid was definitively bearing down upon us and 100% we could expect an impact and destruction, then it would make sense for politicians to take certain decisions, in the *short term*, which would have political, cultural and economic impacts on the world’s population, in order to protect it. The problem with AGW is at least threefold. 1, the level of the warming has with it an uncertainty with respect to its magnitude. 2, There is a level of uncertainty with respect to the cause (CO2 vs Natural vs other) and 3, there is greater uncertainty with respect to the impacts of the proposed climatic changes on the world’s population.
So, under the circumstances, once scientists have prepared a case for politicians (and dare I say, the public) – eg the IPCC reports – then the decision with respect to appropriate response is a responsibility that each affected person, ie citizens, voters, consumers have and a right to a full say in. It is not the sole right of scientists, politicians and economists or lobby groups etc to make decisions which affect us all. Yes, they are taking that privilege (see carbon tax in Australia) but it makes it no less the right of us, the great unwashed, to have our say, our input, our protest.
Anthony, please get some of the unwashed on your show, who can speak rationally about how this ‘meme’ is affecting their economic life and freedom to enjoy their lifestyle (eg people with a windlectic dumped in their backyard). How their power bills have risen. How they have to make choices between warmth and food.

Thanks. This will be a most entertaining and hopefully enlightening event. Great line up.
Some discussion of the politics above. I would caution against making the event political in any way. Certainly not party political. If you make an issue of “Obama this” and “liberals that” then you are polarising the audience that, I hope, you would want to reach.
You want all people to be able to tune in and consider the science as it is delivered to them without them feeling they are being preached to by the GOP.
Unless the subject of the piece is exactly about the politicising of the science then I’d avoid it. Not everyone with a dog in this fight is American and those of us on the outside are not driven by politics when it comes to our understanding of climate issues. America is not as big a part of the world as America considers itself. But then you can only understand that from being on the outside of the patriotic fervour.
Personally I look at Romney and the Republicans, look at some of their policies regarding human rights and I find it amazing that there are human beings who could bring themselves to vote for people with such hatred, people who can’t separate faith from office or their own twisted morality from the act of using policy for the common good.. Then I look at their climate policy and even though I know it’s free-market-driven rather than science-driven I can see the positives.
I have no wish to bash America as I’ve been a frequent visitor and personally love many, many parts of it and its people. But politically it is a sewer.
Thankfully I’m from the UK & don’t have to make those choices.
Knowing how polarising the politics are in the US you run the risk of losing the very people you should be trying to reach if it’s seen as just another right-wing campaign for the presidency. In the real world there is no such thing as left and right. Like the climate, the issues are far too complicated to put in boxes.

Do a Panel with Jo Nova, and warmist Psychobablist Stephan Lewandowski – Given the opportunity to debate Lewandowski, Jo I think would definitely be a show. After all Stephan is a great friend of WUWT sending all those surveys your way.
I second, third, forth, and fifth Prof Bob Carter – He’s a great speaker but also understands that the money wasted here is harming the poor and sick of the world; give him a joint gig with Will Kininmonth “Kininmonth headed Australia’s National Climate Centre at the Bureau of Meteorology from 1986 to 1998,[2] ” wikipedia – They both know each other and are very knowlegeable and approchable blokes.
You might even approach Andrew Bolt or Alan Jones as notable media identities here in Aus as presenters – though they might have restrictions on their ability to make such performances.
I think you need to send a Media Advice to Fox and Sky networks – Also each Capital city in Australia has a public access broadcaster for Aus, I’d propose a “Best of” compilation and book time on public access TV – We’d need a resident of each such city to coordinate.

unfortunately, the MSM won’t let go of the meme.
imagine if they weren’t ***reluctant!
30 Oct: Sydney Morning Herald: Peter Hannam with Reuters: Sandy has lessons for Australia, BoM says
Scientists are ***reluctant to attribute any single weather event to the effects of global warming. Climate models, though, predict fewer – but more intense – major storms such as cyclones or hurricanes.
“This is the sort of thing we’re warning about increasing over time,” Dr Braganza said. “We are breaking records across metrics where we’d expect to break records as the planet warms.”
The bureau’s scientists are also interested in the period of very unusual pressure patterns over North America since the start of summer, notable for its extreme heat and the worst drought in many regions for decades. Some speculate that the extraordinary weather patterns may be linked to the record sea-ice melt across the Arctic that smashed records, Dr Braganza said…
Dr Will Steffen, a member of the Australian Climate Commission, noted that Sandy is only a category 1 hurricane, but the damage will likely be significant because of its huge size and the fact that its landing coincided with a high tide.
“Sea-level rises – the observed sea-level rise around the world over the past century, and the projections for further rises – are related to climate change,” Dr Steffen said.
“It is the combination of sea-level rise, storm surge (like the one coming in from Sandy on the eastern USA coast) and high tides that lead to the worst flooding events.”
“The point here is that even modest rises in sea-level – of just tens of centimetres – can lead to much higher probabilities of high sea-level events,” Dr Steffen said…
However, getting the broader message through that authorities everywhere need to consider the increased risk to lives and infrastructure from a warming climate is an issue that is likely to linger well after the storm event, he (Braganza) said…

I have read the comments since my earlier post in this thread. Several suggest additional speakers and I write to support that. Inputs from non-US people would help to show the breadth of support for science and reality against the AGW-scare.
Also, 24 hours is a long time. Sections of recorded inputs from around the globe would be interesting, useful and possibly influential ‘filler’.
I really think Henrik Svensmark would be an asset. He has a mild but attractive presence, speaks good English. Most of the public are not aware of his work and the related experiments at CERN, and his work makes a nice ‘fit’ with that of Nir Shaviv . Some people have suggested Nigel Calder who co-authored ‘The Chilling Stars’ with Henrik, but I think Henrik would have a much better screen presence.
While talking about solar stuff, I would like to suggest an input from Paal Brekke . He sometimes (very rarely) posts to WUWT and was an important part of the SOHO project.
As some others have said, Bob Carter and Bill Kininmonth would make a stellar double act from Oz.
Realism would be held to the fore by Robert Brown whose cogent and erudite contributions to WUWT speak for themselves.
Also, intermittent feedback from a panel of ‘ordinary people’ may be interesting and useful to viewers. If so then someone such as David M Hoffer would seem to be an appropriate person to interrogate the panel (he is not a scientists but has deep understanding of a wide range of AGW issues) although I have not met him so I cannot assess his probable screen presence.
In conclusion, I very strongly support zootcadillac in his advice to avoid partisan politics if possible. This may be difficult when the show includes the excellent Sen. Inhofe but no balancing US political view. Partisan politics may create more new opponents than new friends.
I hope these thoughts from an old socialist are helpful to your considerations, and I ask you to convey my greetings and good wishes to all participants in the event.
Richard

How about Patrick Moore. Ex Greenpeace co-founder. He would present sensible alternatives and critique to current environmental policies as advocated by the Big Green organizations.

The problem, of course, is that the smallest slot is 15 minutes. What would he do with the other 14’50”?

You coulld possibly invite Dr Svalgaard to pre-record something and add some subtitles. Do you have the equipment to do that?

Anthony – another contributor you might consider is David Bellamy. David used to be an very popular TV presenter of natural history programmes on the BBC. Needless to say, he was got-rid-of by the corporation when he began questioning global warming dogma.
I think David Bellamy could make a fantastic slot taking an overview of ‘humans’ and their natural drive to develop the world around them – in the most brilliant technological ways – throughout history.
Many people still hold the presenter in warm affection.

This is big, big news and a big chance for all of us who are not into climate alarmism. I wish you all luck organizing this and getting the event out. I hope all participants will keep it on professional level and will not slip in any crackpottism that can be criticised later and used to dismiss the whole event.

“Dr. Sebastian Lüning (co-author of Die Kalt Sonne)” is still wrong, you missed that “Kalt” should be “kalte”
I guess I should have pointed out there were two typos, and not just one. Sorry, and good luck with the WUWT-TV, great idea!

Michael Mann constantly refers to those questioning him as “the rabble”. With a lineup like this it will be hard for Mann to justify his denigrating insults. These folks will be saying the same things that the ‘rabble’ are saying. After these interviews the ‘rabble’ will have some good quotes to shove down Mann’s throat.

This is more than great, congratulation and big thanks to this Anthony!!
Some commenters have suggested participation from (i.e.) Bob Carter, Ole Humlum, Mark Steyn and many other… I’d like to propose, that you also invite Connie Hedegaard (EU enviro-commis.), a superbly influencial politocrat here (and there), and, while at it; why not try to get Maurice Strong to appear, maybe the two most dangerous persons outside the US… 😉
Either way/or participants, please see to that the result of all the efforts can be viewed by a maximum number of interested people around the World, regardless of ‘IT-systems’. Big thanks!

Brilliant Anthony! Can’t wait.
To get some post-broadcast MSM attention, you need either to bury Gore’s audience figures (which I’m sure you will) or have a raging stand-up coffee-hurling row with a famous alarmist (which I’m sure you won’t because you’re far too polite). Failing that, get one of Mann’s many victims to “libel” him on live TV. 🙂
How about ’24 Reasons why Climate Alarmism is Fatally Flawed’ as the theme?
Totally +1 with the names others have mentioned. Given all the alarmist froth about Sandy, perhaps get TonyB to air some ‘anecdotal’ historical eveidence on ‘Great Storms of the Past’?

I do know that regular mundane everyday gore on TV and in movies is pretty popular. What I mean is, that in some markets gore really sells well, especially during holloween.
But, once they find out it’s really All Gore how many people really watch?
I AM glad for you Anthony. It will be alot of work.

Istm you have an opportunity to educate, and the people who need to be educated are; politicians, journalists, the ordinary public, and confused children. So, imo, you need a “Climate Science for Dummies” segment, and that segment needs to show the physical basis of the “Greenhouse Effect” (if indeed such physical basis exists, of which I’m doubtful).
If you’ve got a bunch of scientists, some of whom are “lukewarmers”, it should be a trivial exercise for one of then to show the theoretical and actual temperatures of the Moon (to show the math works) and then show there’s some difference on Earth that is due to its atmosphere. It should be a piece of cake. In fact, I’m suprised that “basic physics” page doesn’t exist on every lukewarmers website.

Not everyone with a dog in this fight is American and those of us on the outside are not driven by politics when it comes to our understanding of climate issues.

Getting rather tired of this self-righteous delusion. If you live in the UK or EU, e.g., you are a fish swimming in the leftist sea, unaware. The entire “CO2=pollution and gubmint/the UN must fix it” package is pretty much a given, no one dares or hopes to contest it.
You’re not “apolitical”, just so thoroughly politicized you’re unaware of it.

The pro AGW response to this well be all too predictable. WUWT TV is funded by Heartland-Koch Brothers-Big Oil and is therefore denialist propaganda. It would not be surprising if they try to conflate this with Fakegate.

You’re spot on Brian. I have the same feeling, the L(egacy)SM on the right side of the North Atlantic seem to be so biased that it does not report uncertainties, issues or inconsistencies in the greenhouse theory. A look at Wikipedia, that is the current understanding of “non-biased” in Europe.
So people tend to think this is established science and are kept bombarded with all the CAGW papers and “Tabloid Climatology” stories.
Cracks start to appear, but its a long way to go. Europe seems to be decided to do harakiri on “renewable” (and still not realises it does not work) combating a non-existent thread and missing to address real problems.

“I admit this as being part of a personal failing, due to my hearing loss and his accent, I have trouble understanding Dr. Svalgaard even in person and dread how an interview might go. That said, if he wants to put on a presentation, where I don’t have to interact beyond an introduction. He is most certainly welcome to do so. – Anthony”
one wonders if the state of the art in voice recognition technology has not advanced enough to do “English subtitles” of his English. Obviously, there will be an occasional mangling of his presentation from time to time. “To” is likely to come out as “Too” or “Two” or “Toot” or something like that. Like yourself, I am a victim of “old fart who can’t hear” disease aka presbycusis. With some audio filtering at the machine end most things work, but the subtitles come in handy.
While I am sure that the free versions are worth every penny you pay for them, there are some professional versions out there that might actually do a reasonable job.

Anthony,
Just a thought.
You could show the pictures of the experiment of plants growing better with elevated levels of CO2. You could provide a slide (with references) of the increase in plant tolerance to heat and drought stress with elevated levels of CO2 and point out the deserts greening.
You could then use the top paragraphs from http://www.bread.org/hunger/global/
The world is facing a hunger crisis unlike anything it has seen in more than 50 years.
925 million people are hungry.
Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes.
That’s one child every five seconds.
There were 1.4 billion people in extreme poverty in 2005.

And if you wanted to hammer home the point start a counter for the rest of the telethon incrementing every 5 seconds. Then ask: “Why are we spending trillions of dollars on a threat based solely on computer models that are consistently incorrect?
