EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG

COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION

SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE

CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD

COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE

INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS

CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.

TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT

RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI

WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL

QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE

CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED

BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH

TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1028 PM HST SAT 27 OCT 2012MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

On news this evening here in Aus, a tsunami of 2metres is expected in about an hour. Lets hope it’s not that severe.

All I know is there is no damage, but many people have noted that there have been waves, shimmies and jolts. Highest wave noted was 45cm. Time wise 8pm to about 8:15pm British Columbia time. Since it is dark many can’t see if there was damage to the area, where it happened. They have noted that there has been a change in sea levels and the currents have changed, but that was the latest update on the news here in Alberta where I live.

Change of local sea levels is caused by land height changes not unusual during an earthquake. Let’s hope that the tsunami expected is short lived.

October 28, 2012 2:59 am

I’m in British Columbia on mid-Vancouver Island so this caused some initial concern when I saw the alert.
However, the alert was for Northern Vancouver Island to parts of Alaska. Here at least, nothing of note.

October 28, 2012 3:03 am

Commentary and Background – I posted this some time ago.
The Cascadia Fault offshore Vancouver Island has experienced 13 great earthquakes in the last 6000 years, or one every 500 years on average. The last big one occurred 311 years ago in 1700, so another could happen at any time. Low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable and we will have less than one hour’s warning between the seismic event and the tsunami.
I would not assume that our current tsunami warning system is capable of such a rapid response.
p.s.
Earthquakes tend to happen in bunches.
_____________________________________________________________
The M9 Cascadia Megathrust Earthquake of January 26, 1700
http://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/histor/15-19th-eme/1700/1700-eng.php
At 9PM on January 26, 1700 one of the world’s largest earthquakes occurred along the west coast of North America. The undersea Cascadia thrust fault ruptured along a 1000 km length, from mid Vancouver Island to northern California in a great earthquake, producing tremendous shaking and a huge tsunami that swept across the Pacific. The Cascadia fault is the boundary between two of the Earth’s tectonic plates: the smaller offshore Juan de Fuca plate that is sliding under the much larger North American plate.
The earthquake shaking collapsed houses of the Cowichan people on Vancouver Island and caused numerous landslides. The shaking was so violent that people could not stand and so prolonged that it made them sick. On the west coast of Vancouver Island, the tsunami completely destroyed the winter village of the Pachena Bay people with no survivors. These events are recorded in the oral traditions of the First Nations people on Vancouver Island. The tsunami swept across the Pacific also causing destruction along the Pacific coast of Japan. It is the accurate descriptions of the tsunami and the accurate time keeping by the Japanese that allows us to confidently know the size and exact time of this great earthquake.
The earthquake also left unmistakeable signatures in the geological record as the outer coastal regions subsided and drowned coastal marshlands and forests that were subsequently covered with younger sediments. The recognition of definitive signatures in the geological record tells us the January 26, 1700 event was not a unique event, but has repeated many times at irregular intervals of hundreds of years. Geological evidence indicates that 13 great earthquakes have occurred in the last 6000 years.
We now know that a similar offshore event will happen sometime in the future and that it represents a considerable hazard to those who live in southwest B.C. However, because the fault is offshore, it is not the greatest earthquake hazard faced by major west coast cities. In the interval between great earthquakes, the tectonic plates become stuck together, yet continue to move towards each other. This causes tremendous strain and deformation of the Earth’s crust in the coastal region and causes ongoing earthquake activity. This is the situation that we are in now. Some onshore earthquakes can be quite large (there have been four magnitude 7+ earthquakes in the past 130 years in southwest B.C. and northern Washington State). Because these inland earthquakes can be much closer to our urban areas and occur more frequently, they represent the greatest earthquake hazard. An inland magnitude 6.9 earthquake in 1995 in a similar geological setting beneath Kobe, Japan caused in excess of $200 billion damage.

Checked Youtube for any videos from Hawaii. All I found were 3 videos which, in no particular order, blamed UFO’s, God and President Obama for causing the initial BC earthquake. Now, I’m no expert in religion, ufology or US politics, but I feel there may well be other reasons why this quake occurred ? 🙂

Belize used to be called British Honduras. I have lived in British Columbia for 45 years and have never heard “British Columbia should be given back to Columbia”. Obviously it’s a joke and I find no offense from it, especially since Columbia refers to a person and not to a nation. The Columbia river runs through much of B.C.
British Columbia is named after the great ocean god that sailed the ocean blue in 1492, or something like that 🙂

David,
The thing is, the pages of WUWT are filled with examples of people trying to link any and all events such as earthquakes, to CAGCD. We know it’s a ridiculous claim, but there propagandists out there making the claims, nevertheless. Might as well have some fun at their expense, eh?

Luther, I agree with your comment about warmists making ridiculous linkages but lets be careful we don’t imply those linkages are being made by Canadian meteorologists.
Unless you open the Weather Network link provided by Chris B, readers of his post might be left with the impression that the earthquake was indeed being linked to Hurricane Sandy – by the Canadian Weather Network. The Weather Network’s team of meteorologists certainly don’t link earthquakes and hurricanes and they are likely not fans of CAGW either.
I suggest we need to help out in protecting the credibility of meteorologists (and this blog) at all times.
Sorry Mods (and Anthony), the full moon must be making me a little owly and defensive about BC and the Canadian Weather Network.

Small wonder that you haven’t heard of the Columbians. After all, they’ve been extinct, as a people, for some time. What did ’em in was their tattoo- cult penchant for communal sharing of tattoo needles fashioned from discarded WWII hypodermics and filled with lipstick melted in some mysterious tribal concoction, with which they covered themselves in often bizarre, yet colorful designs. It’s said that the tribe had all been caught up in overlaying the graphic landscapes of their festooned selves with the latest trendy color, Lime Jello Sparkle, there towards the end.
Some have speculated that the Columbians were the original subjects of some dastardly government release of the vile AIDS disease, which original intent was to rid the world of tattoo parlors and such, before things got out of hand.
Some of their design influence has been preserved in modern tattoo culture and has been spotted as far away as East Orange, New Jersey.
