Friday Funny Bonus – Forget to pay your bill fellas?

Jim Hoggan’s flagship propaganda outlet, releaser of the Gleick stolen files, Desmogblog.com – is D.O.A.

…or maybe they just gave up, according to Alexa, they had their last measurable traffic blip almost 6 months ago (lower number is better):

The Pakistani’s like them though:

Yeah. Crap happens on the world wide web. It happens all the time that those who don’t remember, or didn’t pay attention to the renewal notice, get properly deprived of service.
It doesn’t cost a lot of money to keep a web site going. It does take a lot of effort to keep a good one going, and gaining in readership like WUWT. You have to have a marketable product.
DeSmog, from my perspective as a web developer, did not have a decent product. Maybe they ran out of the lunch money it takes to keep a site on the air. Maybe they have done the world a favor and committed www suicide.

Namecheap has the following policy for expired domains: The owner of a domain has a non-guaranteed grace period of approximately 27 days after the expiration date to renew the domain at the regular domain rate. If the domain is not renewed, the domain will be deleted from our database and it is transferred to a “redemption period” at the Registry. If the domain is not re-instated in this phase, then the domain is released to the public by the Registry and becomes available approximately after 80-85 days in the status of redemption or is auctioned off by the Registrar and becomes property of the different party. Once in redemption, then there is an additional fee of $200 for reactivation. So it’s total $200 + the renewal cost for the domain.
Namecheap.com is currently holding the expired domain registration.

Science has a lot further to go to regain an acceptable level of integrity but this development, plus the “florid-psychosis” quality of Lewandowsky and Gleick, suggest that the healing crisis point has been reached and normality is slowly returning.
It would be good to buy the domain simply to ensure it does not revert to the psychotics.

The desmogblog.com registration expired Friday, 21 September 2012, but it remains unavailable to the public in the Namecheap databse for the guaranteed grace period of about 27 days to give the expired registrant the opportunity to redeem the expired domain. The domain still will not become available to the public for an auction of the domain name or registration to a different registrant for about 80 to 85 days.from Friday’s expiration date. That would put the availability date for the public to register the domain somewhere about 10 December 2012 to 15 December 2012.
Presumably the typically lazy and irresponsible political radicals will realize there are undesirable consequences for stiffing a vendor with a delinquent payment and finally deign to pay what is due. Some years ago my swimming pool serviceman described to me how his worst paying customers were the wealthiest lawyers, judges, medical doctors, and academics. They were the same people who screamed and protested loudest about the plight of the poor working man and immigrants trying to earn a living. But when it came to paying the serviceman, they always had an excuse to delay payment or deny payment altogether in a scheme to defraud the worker, making it necessary to raise the rates for all of the customers who paid on time.

That’s interesting. The Website must be mirrored or cached in some fashion for clients outside North America. Namecheap is displaying its own Web page in place of the desmogblog Website when accessed in the U.S.

D. Patterson
September 22, 2012 4:16 am

December 10th to 15th is the approximate date when desmogblog.com would be auctioned or registered to someone other than the last registrant, if the lazy, irresponsible, and delinquent registrant fails to finally pay the bill.

When a domain expires, the DNS entry is changed to the registrar’s parking HTML server. My guess is that your DNS server hasn’t heard the news yet.

If one’s computer infrequently caches DNS entries instead of asking the DNS system it is possible that the lookup your system does uses your cached entry which still points the server with the site on it.
You can even make an entry on your system that persists forever.

GoDaddy now gives two WHOIS results. DeSmogBlog was at namecheap.com, expired Sept 21. But now it’s registered at enom.com, record updated on Sept 22, new expiration Sept 21, 2013, a year away.
Is “enom” some sort of name holding company, the name will stay “parked” on their lot until the name is reclaimed or sold off? Or is “enom” the commercial/professional side, “namecheap” is the “discount” side?

The Canadian Revenue Agency is just now starting to investigate crooked enviromental organizations that claim charitable status. Since this is suzuki’s PR firm, wanna bet that had something to do with it?

Sorry for the outage. It was a mixup with the registrar of our primary domain, and it took some time to sort out due to the weekend. All is fixed now. Thanks for your patience everyone!

LOL, I forgot the earlier response:

Many suspected a hack attack. …

Noting how many people here are checking out their site, I have to suspect they allowed this to happen, as our response is now giving them the biggest hit since they ever existed!

Let us know when Dr. Lew sends you a survey to take.

Otter, thoughts exactly, has it worked though?

These listing agencies are notoriously unreliable for low-ranking sites.
The German site http://www.refertus.info also does tracking.
Global rankings are currently

My hits in the past 30 days 1694
That means a couple of hundred hits and I overtake a well-funded website!
All I did recently was help take apart the Lewandowsky paper.

As of today, Desmogblog.com seems to have found a credit card that works. The site is back up.

Ironic that Desmog is bankrolled by the NETeller millionaire John Lefebvre.
http://www.ucalgary.ca/oncampus/weekly/oct14-05/lefebvre-profile.html
Lefebvre pleaded guilty in a plea bargain to charges of conspiracy in his online gambling payment scheme.

If anyone knows the ins and ourt of online payment methods, it would be him.

That’s wild.
One thing I do is set my browser’s “ home page” setting to my web site, so every time I open a browser while on the Internet I see if my site is working.
(Browser default is typically a search engine associated with the browser maker.)
Problems can occur with DNS name servers, besides of course the hosting operation.
As for the Desmog page showing up outside of the US, it may have been cached locally to speed response to users, and the cache automatic update can’t update due domain status.
And moving a web site to a different hosting service can be an effort if the site owner did not think through control of the site. Most people will want to have the technical contact as the hosting service but control of the registration and hosting in their hands – not all registrar host combinations are that straight up. My host sends me a reminder every year that I should check on my domain name registration information.
And there are scammer scum around, one in Canada sends renewal notices written to sound official to the naiive but with a link to re-register through them.
As for the keywords in a meta tag, a common scam used to be to pack the tag with hook words that had nothing to do with the site. Search engines caught onto that and started ignoring that tag.

Isn’t it funny, they bought the idea that skeptics are conspiracy theorists, and still on the right column they talk of a “climate cover-up”

Maybe they are just packing it up and moving to Pakistan where they have some real traffic according to Alexa. Could they have found that being a cash-loan-front is more lucrative than alarming the world about anthropogenic global warming?
