Yeah. Crap happens on the world wide web. It happens all the time that those who don’t remember, or didn’t pay attention to the renewal notice, get properly deprived of service.
It doesn’t cost a lot of money to keep a web site going. It does take a lot of effort to keep a good one going, and gaining in readership like WUWT. You have to have a marketable product.
DeSmog, from my perspective as a web developer, did not have a decent product. Maybe they ran out of the lunch money it takes to keep a site on the air. Maybe they have done the world a favor and committed www suicide.
Probably wound up the company behind it to avoid any possible liability from a Heartland lawsuit.

When a domain expires, the DNS entry is changed to the registrar’s parking HTML server. My guess is that your DNS server hasn’t heard the news yet.

If one’s computer infrequently caches DNS entries instead of asking the DNS system it is possible that the lookup your system does uses your cached entry which still points the server with the site on it.
You can even make an entry on your system that persists forever.
And these people claim to be so smart. NOT!
GoDaddy now gives two WHOIS results. DeSmogBlog was at namecheap.com, expired Sept 21. But now it’s registered at enom.com, record updated on Sept 22, new expiration Sept 21, 2013, a year away.
Is “enom” some sort of name holding company, the name will stay “parked” on their lot until the name is reclaimed or sold off? Or is “enom” the commercial/professional side, “namecheap” is the “discount” side?
It looks like DeSmogblog.com is up and running now. I’ve never been there before, but it seems to be fully functional.
I ran the Alexa comparison of WUWT and Desmogblog a couple of days ago. I was going to make a note of it in tips and notes. I decided not to because I didn’t want then to get a single extra hit. OH WELL!!! There is nothing happening over there at DeSmogBlog… don’t waste your time. They are having money issues clearly.
On the topic of things disappearing, let us all congratulate the Arctic Ice on its continued existence (per sidebar countdown). More panic next summer, no doubt, if the warmists haven’t all exploded with rage by then.

That’s wild.
One thing I do is set my browser’s “ home page” setting to my web site, so every time I open a browser while on the Internet I see if my site is working.
(Browser default is typically a search engine associated with the browser maker.)
Problems can occur with DNS name servers, besides of course the hosting operation.
As for the Desmog page showing up outside of the US, it may have been cached locally to speed response to users, and the cache automatic update can’t update due domain status.
And moving a web site to a different hosting service can be an effort if the site owner did not think through control of the site. Most people will want to have the technical contact as the hosting service but control of the registration and hosting in their hands – not all registrar host combinations are that straight up. My host sends me a reminder every year that I should check on my domain name registration information.
And there are scammer scum around, one in Canada sends renewal notices written to sound official to the naiive but with a link to re-register through them.
As for the keywords in a meta tag, a common scam used to be to pack the tag with hook words that had nothing to do with the site. Search engines caught onto that and started ignoring that tag.
Isn’t it funny, they bought the idea that skeptics are conspiracy theorists, and still on the right column they talk of a “climate cover-up”
Maybe they are just packing it up and moving to Pakistan where they have some real traffic according to Alexa. Could they have found that being a cash-loan-front is more lucrative than alarming the world about anthropogenic global warming?
