Real Science Announces the Death of Steve Goddard

The web site Real Science has posted an announcement of the death of blogger and former WUWT contributor Steve Goddard. WUWT has not yet been able to verify any of the details but Anthony has asked that the link be posted.

UPDATE :

An alternate Steve Goddard site is claiming that Real Science was hacked and that the death announcement is fake. WUWT is still unable to verify the details.

UPDATE 2:

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the report of the death of Steve Goddard is somewhat premature.  When I first e-mailed Anthony with this news, his first response was “I don’t know this might be a fake is real name is ….” a subsequent  e-mail responding to a link to the Real Science site noted “some of it jibes with what I know it some does not I’d be cautious…” then he asked me to post the link to the notice with a notice that we could not confirm anything.  Apparently his caution was justified and WUWT readers can be assured that Anthony keeps a close watch on his interns even when he takes a rare few hours off.

UPDATE # 3

Steve Goddard himself appears to have weighed in here at WUWT:

I’m fine. I was off at a soccer game when this happened. Basically, someone I trusted went insane and took control of the site. I still don’t have access, as my IP address has been blocked.

You have to wonder what is going on in the collective psyche of alarmists when we have, in a short frame of time, exploding unbelievers, advocating burning people’s houses down, death notices for people who disagree etc. As more moderate people shift their opinions, the lunatic fringe comes to the fore. What they don’t get is that this stuff alienates the mainstream even more.
I sincerely hope that none of these deranged fanatics decides to take it any further. Thanks to a compliant MSM, things like destroying experimental GM crops, disrupting coal loading (in Australia) and harassing scientists and their families (in the UK) are treated as high spirited pranks. I suspect that a lot of MSM journalists think ‘there, but for the grace … etc’ with regard to their own offspring when reporting these events.
Last week, the Australian Leader of the Opposition was bailed up in a restaurant where he was having dinner with a friend by a couple of harpies who disagreed with his views on gay marriage. They then attracted a Twitterati who gathered around the restaurant and banged on the glass windows. As it happens, I agree more with their stance than his – I don’t care much who marries whom. It makes no difference to me. But, I am repelled by the view that shrieking abuse in a public restaurant, and gathering a mob to do the same, is a legitimate form of political protest in a functioning democracy. It is playground behaviour, at best.
In the lead up to Rio (if only Hunter S was still with us!) I guess that a lot more weirdness will surface. Perhaps this time a few decent investigative journalists will recognise the potential for stories beyond the press releases at this forthcoming Bacchanalia For The Planet.

Fantasing about the death of skeptics is the penultimate step. Given what Zwick wrote, this hacking is not to be taken lightly. Long before this or the 10:10 video I explained that this stage would come. First stage: declare the end of debate. Second stage: ignore the other side.
Third stage: dehumanize the other side ( crazy, criminal, ect) Fourth stage: Fantasize violence.
5th stage: real violence.

This is a bit of a worry.
It seems the hackers have probably got hold of email addresses, and will now be able to post on many sites under the name of the owner of that email.
This has the potential to make things VERY awkward especially if it was orchestrated by some extreme warmist group.

Just trying to get a handle on this hacking.
I’m no master webmaster, but it seems that there are two (at least) ways a site can be hacked.
1) Someone compromises the server that hosts the web site. A continued “hack” would mean that the access password has been changed and the original site owner cannot log in. Presumably there exist means to cure this situation with the hosting company.
2) Someone compromises the DNS registration and redirects name lookups to an alternate site. From my limited experience that does not appear to be the case here, as all of Steve Goddard’s postings at real-science.com still appear to be accessible. Presumably Mr. Goddard still has control of his DNS registration and can assert control of his domain name, if not the web site.

April 21, 2012 4:12 pm

It seems a little tangled. Nick Stokes and Mosher both agree that Goddard was not 81. Stokes says he is/was an avid cyclist and that they spent time together in Lisbon. Stokes says his name IS Steve Goddard. Mosher says it is not. I’m not certain how or where one could verify information for a wordpress blog. A “whois” run on real-science.com points to an ENOM.com, which in turn points to moniker.com. Other whois information for real-science.com points to whoisguard.com, which acts as a privacy cut-out that theoretically protects site owners from being spammed. So whoever the real Steve Goddard is, he or she is (or was) really fanatic about privacy (amusing when you consider the existence of a public blog) and probably wasn’t 81.

Some of you may be reading something into the fact the real-science.com whois listing shows cloudflare.com as the dns servers.
Cloudflare is a benign web caching service (I used it on two of my web sites for some time). It collects hit stats, and provides a protective layer between the primary web servers and users requesting pages. It caches web pages to increase web page response speed and also acts as a configurable filter that will block certain malicious attacks and known spammer queries so that total traffic is reduced to real queries in some cases dramatically lowering band width usage by the primary domain and improving page response times. So there is nothing significant about that dns info.
Regarding the rest of this issue I have no further info.

I’m inclined to agree with NZ Willy. While the announcement on real-science.com appears to be a hoax, I’m not completely sold on the ‘hacking’ of that web site. I’ve posted comments today at stevengoddard.wordpress.com that remain in moderation – one comment provides the result of the WHOIS I posted above. It’s publicly available information available to anyone capable of typing ‘whois real-science .com’ on a Unix-like computer, or going to any WHOIS web site.
Plus, the Steven Goddard posting at stevengoddard.wordpress.com says it’s a long story. Sounds to me [speculation] like Mr. Goddard found a marvelous wooden horse outside the gates and decided to bring it in to Troy. He got punked, and gave someone the keys to the domain as well as the web site. [/speculation]

I just received an e-mail from “info@real-science.com”:
“Scientist Steven Goddard has died in Dallas, aged 81. Paramedics were called to the scientist’s home at about midnight after he stopped breathing.
Goddard was taken to the medical centre early in the morning, and paramedics administered CPR in the ambulance. He did not regain consciousness and was reported dead about two hours later.
His friend, Susan Moore, told us: “He was a hilarious man. He had an outlook on life that was very honest and made you laugh with all the facts he came out with all the time.”
Goddard’s Dallas funeral at the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church and cremation are scheduled for Wednesday. He is survived by his wife, activist Sarah Goddard, and their three children.
P.S. We will have a day of silence tomorrow where there will be no posts. On Monday 23rd April 2012 a new management team will take-over. If you are interested in writing for Real-Science.com, please contact us at info@real-science.com

On the 19th April, a number of WordPress vulnerabilities were published on bugtraq. Bugtraq generally doesn’t publish the info until the vendor has been contacted, and patches released (assuming they acknowledge the issue). If the hosting server for real-science hasn’t been patched, there is a possibility that they used one of the 3 published vulnerabilities, or they used a php sql injection directly and gained control.
Patch Tuedsday is an extremely important day.

******************************************************************************
You may find this monograph from the Army War College, of interest regarding your stages of violence. http://www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.mil/pubs/display.cfm?pubID=1101 . Although it is primarily focused on the Title statement ( Drug Trafficking, Violence, and Instability) , it has some bearing on your stages and notes that VNSA’s (Violent Non State Actors ) are on the rise around the world. I would include those organizations and individuals in the AGW camp who are promoting violence, in this description. It has been commented that: ““As surprising as it may seem, pirate attacks off Somalia, militias in Lebanon, and criminal armies in Mexico are part of a global pattern and not anomalies.” While these groups may not be discernably coordinated or associated, I would agree that there is a pattern developing.
The full paper may be freely downloaded as a ~ 3mb pdf.
Here is the introductory synopsis:
Quote:
Brief Synopsis
Although challenges posed by various kinds of violent armed groups initially appear highly diverse and unrelated to one another, in fact they all reflect the increasing connections between security and governance and, in particular, the relationship between poor governance and violent armed groups. In many cases, these groups are overtly challenging the state; in others they are cooperating and colluding with state structures while subtly undermining them; in yet others, the state is a passive bystander while violent armed groups are fighting one another. The mix is different, the combinations vary, and the perpetrators of violence have different motives, methods, and targets. In spite of their divergent forms, violent nonstate actors (VNSAs) share certain qualities and characteristics. These violent armed groups represent a common challenge to national and international security, a challenge that is far greater than the sum of the individual groups, and that is likely to grow rather than diminish over the next several decades. This monograph focuses on the complex relationship between human security, crime, illicit economies, and law enforcement. It also seeks to disentangle the linkages between insurgency on the one hand and drug trafficking and organized crime on the other, suggesting that criminal activities help sustain an insurgency, but also carry certain risks for the insurgency.

How many people use the same passwords for everything they log into (from work, to cloud based email through to bank accounts)?

Steve Goddard may not be dead but Richard Harter of Richard Harters World just died last night. He was a friend of my husband and an active Science Fiction fan… AND a Marine (can not forget that)
Harter had a very sharp wit. For example he wrote a fictional biography of Jane Austin (sp) that managed to get used by some kid plagiarising her homework. A quick look at his website is worth the time while it is still up.

AW and Steve Goodard the below email was sent to me as soon as I hit the submit button when I commented on another post on WUWT. Not sure you care but just in case I posted in the comments here.
from: Real Science
Scientist Steven Goddard has died in Dallas, aged 81.

The number 81 may hint of the ‘calling card’, much beloved by crime-writers, being played.
Simply put this is where the arch-criminal and ‘genius-mastermind’ puts up their signature as a challenge to the eventually successful detective that the former believe is far too subtle
for their ‘inferior’ protagonist to solve.
It’s a tactic, unsucessfully, utilised time after time by soon-to-be-humbled by the more worthy good guys. For example, the ill-doer may for reasons of conceit and as a mechanism to bathe in the approbation of their admirers will ACTUALLY introduce their own names on the ‘calling card’
This is an extreme example and for reasons, totally hidden from me, is called the PG tactic.
Proven Genius, Protector of Gaia, Parental Guidance, Psychopathic Gambler spring to mind- but all are just WAGS on my part.
Steve’s work often includes analysis of RDHMO (Rigified Di-Hydrogen Monoxide) extent and behaviour, with time, on the third planet from the Sun.
The number 81 occurs, at first goggle-glance, with glacial extent and North Pole location.
His findings (that may not always be received favourably by some) have frequently received responses from individuals whom have felt it appropriate to respond in a more lateral way than is traditional.
Once again just sheer conjecture on my part.

Fantasing about the death of skeptics is the penultimate step. Given what Zwick wrote, this hacking is not to be taken lightly. Long before this or the 10:10 video I explained that this stage would come.
First stage: declare the end of debate.
Second stage: ignore the other side.
Third stage: dehumanize the other side ( crazy, criminal, ect)
Fourth stage: Fantasize violence.
5th stage: real violence.

*****************************************************************************************************
This bears repeating. The world is getting more and more polarized and as curiousgeorge linked above, we probably will see new growth in groups like EarthFirst! who have already committed terrorist acts in the name of “the planet”. Those who are prominent skeptics, like Mosh, Anthony, Steve, Steve M, and others need to take heed of this and to attend to your physical as well as virtual security.
This is going to get worse, especially if the solar theory is correct and we begin to go into a significant cooling period. The cognitive dissonance of the split between reality and worldview will be more than some can handle. I have posted skeptical articles on an MSNBC blog for five years now, and you can see this in the evolution of the writing some of my long term adversaries.
This is not a joke, and the other side is playing for keeps because they truly believe that they are saving the planet and that a group of people are standing in their way. I was in London last year and read a book in a bookstore by a group that was praising the bloodletting of the French Revolution as a good thing, a necessary thing, in order “to set things right”. Political efforts related to climate change was at the top of their list.

I think what happened is there was this graph by Michael Mann of Steven Goddard’s life and it was flat for years and then it spiked up at the end to such an extent it was just assumed runaway aging caused all hell to break loose.

I agree with your 5 principles.
But it’s also worth observing that some here are fantasizing about a warmists hack. Presumably because they would delight in an opportunity to feed their own extremism.
For what it’s worth I think anyone with any brains of the warmists persuasion would not even bother to hack Steve’s web site.
Steve is an interesting guy and I give him brownie points for the amount of effort he’s put in to his investigations, even if he is often wrong.
But being wrong is hardly reason to steal his web site. More likely some personal conflict is behind it.

A lot of you above have quickly jumped to conclusions that this is to do with his stance on the climate. Is it not a much better bet to put the cart behind the horse, rather than in front of it? Here he is saying, in no uncertain terms, that it is not. Had it been so, I would have condemned it unequivocally and so would most people across the field. Ghost,
Soccer is an archaic abbreviation for association football when it was still an upper class sport for gentlemen. It’s one of those jolly good English leisure class words that no longer command respect in the UK but remain customary in former colonies. I’ve heard the British call the game metric football or something like that now.
I was off to soccer games myself and I read about Steve’s departure only after he said the report’s been exaggerated. Soccer is good this way.

Er, football and soccer are used interchangeably in all of the UK not just England, unfortunately when the Amercains introduced body armour into the game of rugby they failed to come up with a new name for it, hence the confusion on the Colonials side of the pond. We understand the difference quite easily by just calling that padded game of rugby ‘American Football.’

You are right. It’s a pity that early American footballers did not adopt the proper original British term “Start-Stop Rugby with Padding”. That would have ended all confusion.
Well, whatever the name, it’s good that Steve’s been off to a game rather than off to heaven.
