Letters, I get letters

Note: This letter to WUWT from Sherri Quammen was received today at at 1:47 PM PST  and titled as: A “do it yourself” home global warming test. I present it in entirety, unedited, with appropriate citations for spelling and the original story. See follow up here. – Anthony

=============================================================

When I suggested (WUWT May 22nd, 2007) that Mr. Watts park his gas guzzler in the garage, close all the doors and leave his engine running, it was a humourous [sic] yet effective attempt to make a point to all the ney [sic] sayers that man has drastically affected this planet’s climate as well as it’s [sic] very fragile, life supporting eco-systems.

I merely suggested that he try a little experiment at home comparing the effects from the exaust [sic] of just one running vehicle on his health as well as the probable increase of temperature in his garage.  He obviously knows that many folks have commited [sic] suicide doing this or he wouldn’t have avoided  the real issue and instead call me a vitral [sic] filled leftist or what ever he said at the time.  If one car in an enclosed area ( like the Earth’s atmosphere) can kill someone, then imagine what six billion running cars can do.

In just the short time that the government insued [sic] a no fly rule after 9-11 where no planes were allowed in US skies, there was over a one degree cooling of the atmosphere’s temperature or something like that.  Can you see where I’m going with this, or am I just another tree hugging earth lover with my head in the polluted clouds?  I’m pretty sure this won’t be printed.  We can expect as much from a man paid by the corporations to be a weapon of mass deception.

Dear Ms. Quammen,
You know nothing about global warming. Scientists on your own side will tell you that: (1) waste heat, such as from running automobiles, has nothing to do with global warming; (2) a 1-degree decrease during the brief period after 9-11 when airplanes were grounded would have nothing to do with global warming.

March 22, 2012 2:36 pm

So, the concentrations of carbon monoxide/dioxide, in a garage, have a relevant equivalence with expected atmospheric CO2 ppm concentration?
Anthony, plain and simple, she was suggesting you commit suicide…..not participate in an experiment.
I could only offer a nervous laugh at her “attempt to make a point”.

Funny that she’s in Concow?? You should invite her to Chico (she may even work in that office!) for a cup of coffee…. A LEISURELY activity…. and answer her concerns! Sherri (sic) Quammen (sic) has to be a nom de plume. Otherwise it’s an apairateeth & Carmen the opera construct. 1) She has a middle school level writing skill
2) Limited critical thinking skills
3) Does not bother to think, or fact check, before typing
4) Accepts dogma and propaganda hook, line, and blinkers
It is quite obvious why she has come to her conclusions. She is easily misled.

I think that you should get the Captain Louis Renault award for this article.
I’m extremely shocked (shocked, I say) that you are not worried about probably the nastiest of GHGs. Namely DiHydrogen Oxide. Very deadly stuff. Extremely corrosive and can kill an adult (if inhaled) in less than 10 minutes. It has arguably killed and injured more animal and plant life (including humans) than CO and CO2 combined. Property damage from this destructive chemical has an extremely high annual cost. In certain areas of the country, it has kept the premiums up on certain types of insurance.
It is, quite often, an industrial waste product and is regulated haphazardly. Large spills of this substance have happened more frequently than you might imagine (oil spills are nothing to this).
It has been known to affect the quality and quantity of groundwater. We need to ensure that laws
are in place (as well as enforcement mechanisms) to stop the polluting of our rivers and streams with DiHydrogen Oxide. We should work to ban it like DDT was banned.
And the kicker is that this deadly substance is a much greater factor in global warming than CO2 could ever hope to be.

Shortage of Tinfoil ?

Concow, CA from wiki:
Industry
Historically the Concow region supported dairy farming, ranching, and forestry. The region is zoned (2010 map) for timber production, 5 to 10ac foothill residential, a small area for 1ac foothill residential, and a couple small areas for commercial[33].
In the late 1990’s the CDP became known regionally for a significant domestic product consisting of informal market production and commerce [5].
The region contains marijuana agricultural production, large irrigated plantations were discovered during the 2008 fire. The 2000 domestic product from legitimate income sources is approximately $17.5 million, during and after the 2008 fires an estimated $50 million worth of marijuana was removed [6][7], indicating that the region’s per-capita income is under-reported. The region’s marijuana production is 2% to 3% of California’s total production [8] [9]. The 2008 fire changed the regional micro-climate with the result that crop yields dropped.
10/04/2001 marijuana grow, father of four out squirrel hunting found dead[34]
07/04/2008 9,459 marijuana plants, value $37,800,000[35]
07/10/2008 25 marijuana plants[36]
02/23/2009 32 pounds processed marijuana[37]
03/18/2009 246 pounds processed marijuana + 55 plants[38]
06/18/2009 3 pounds processed marijuana[39]
06/19/2010 Man poses as federal agent and brandished a firearm to seize marijuana in Concow[40][41]
09/09/2010 56 marijuana plants + 200 marijuana clones[42]
08/11/2011 3 pounds processed marijuana, value $27,000[43]
08/14/2011 54 + 369 marijuana plants, value $1,110 to $3,200 per pound[44]
12/1/2011 the difference between informal market industry and formal market are sufficiently blurred at this point that adding to this list seizures less than several thousand plants is not prudent[45]
The region is stereotypically thought of as a place for the manufacture and abuse of the US Schedule II controlled substance stimulant Methamphetamine. It is rumored that there are frequent unpublicized raids by the Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force (BINTF) overseen by the Butte County District Attorney’s Office – but there is no citable evidence to validate these rumors.
08/11/2011 53.31 grams methamphetamine, value $8,000[46]
With the destruction of most unpermitted structures [10] during the 2008 fire, the prefire patterns of residences, commercial land use, informal and formal market industries, and recreational use has changed.

Anthony, you do have to at least give her credit for helping to inspire you with the surfacestations project. This is from 2007, pre WUWT: http://www.norcalblogs.com/watts/local_issues/
“You may remember a couple of weeks ago I got sideswiped by Ms, Sherri Quammen, who in a letter to the editor called me a “weapon of mass destruction” because I’m actively involved in climate change issues locally. While funny, it did give me the impetus (aka kick in the pants) I needed to get very busy and serious about a project I had been contemplating for some time:
A national repository of weather station site surveys.”
She would probably be horrified to hear that she “helped” you to expose the poor quality of temperature stations.

/sarc off
But really. The planet cools 1 degree with domestic, inbound and outbound U.S. air traffic halted for a day??? Great news then, now we know that we can reverse warming by shutting down air traffic for a few days….and Voila!! All better. (if we don’t send ourselves into an ice age, that is)

March 22, 2012 3:04 pm

Not a big point but humourous is indeed spelled humourous or humorous. IIRC the former is more common on the other side of “the pond”, he latter here where we obstinately write colour color, humour humor, and so on. For whatever reason, firefox seems to favor English spelling instead of American, although there may be an add-on dictionary that — ahem — corrects for this:-).
Not that the message or writing is improved by one accidentally correct word (accidental because California is not London).

Let’s see, Ms. Quammen. Six billion running cars in the atmosphere… (bit more than we have, but never mind). Volume of lower atmosphere (below 5 km) is 2.55×10¹⁸ m³. Divided by 6 billion is 4.25×10⁸ m³, the volume containing a single running car. It is a spherical dome with diameter 1175 m (3856 feet) and height 588 m (1928 feet). You know what? I would risk being in a garage of that size while the engine is running…
Provided, of course, the atmosphere is well mixed. But this is why we have all those towers with huge industrial mixers installed; they make wind, don’t they?

When I read this I really just want to cry in despair. This is so typical of the young people, college educated, or not, but nonetheless brainwashed people in the western world. And they are the majority! They have been propagandized (if that’s a word) since birth by their parents, teachers, politicians and the “media.” They really believe this crap! How can this be overcome short of committing them all to a mental institution? Worse yet, they are active in promoting their mistaken views, attacking anyone who disagrees, pressuring politicians and voting. They use the same tactics as Goebbels who won over the majority of the German people to follow Hitler. Is there any hope? I am afraid that alex is right!

Cut her some slack. From the spelling alone, it’s obvious that she’s a recent unfortunate recipient of the finest kind of West Coast progressive educational system. That’s she will have a iifetime of trying to overcome the profoud effects of educational malpractice, is not her fault. But it is her parents’. The whole letter was long on feelings, and short on facts, as if her feelings validate any mis-facts she may have randomly accumulated from her feckless teachers (?!).
(Confession: I too have teenage children who have a distressingly slack attitude to correct spelling. And who seem to be impervious to my divers methods and encouragements, to impress upon them the vital necessity of always spelling perfectly in public, lest the public consider them to be forever a blooming lazy idiot. I remain persistent, in the forlorn hope that they will eventually take it to heart and learn from their heartaches of missed opportunities.)

I just find this letter sad. Hopefully there are some letters that Anthony receives that are much more knowledgeable as to the “debate” on climate change.
To be honest, while I’m on the side of believing that humanity’s impact on the climate is probably not that significant on a global scale (a position, I’ll admit, I didn’t always hold), I think that highlighting a letter such as this is just as wrong as when those on the other side of the “debate” highlight ignorant comments made by those who disagree with the AGW (or CAGW) position.
However, I also appreciate that Anthony must receive a significant number of letters such as this (and he has my sympathy for having to read them in the first place), and sometimes he needs to share them for the laugh. Can I suggest that the “humor” tag be added to this article?

From Sherri’s Facebook page regarding the Occupy movement:
Phil, haven’t you ever heard of civil disobedience? Ever get so sick and tired of getting screwed over by the very people that are supposed to protect you that you feel impelled to do something about it? Apparently not. You seem to be riding on the comformist zombie wagon and I must say that I am surprised. The police have become goon squads for big monied interests and are not there to protect this country’s citizens or enforce laws, they are there to squelch dissent. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, time and time again at a variety of peaceful rally. This country could use a little anarchy! But you be a good little citizen and keep speaking out for this unsustainable capitalist paradigm that is gutting the planet and every living thing on it, excluding, of course that less than 1% who holds all the capital and can afford a biosphere. Good luck.

“Surely” is a shining example of Sustainability! The goal she is obviously striving for. Someone in another thread made the connection that education is Anti-Sustainability. A World Bank report shows this is very true.
World Bank Report to government of Burkina Faso (Africa)

Educational attainment of the household head:
87. First of all, there is a high rate of return to education in Burkina Faso; the higher the educational attainment of the household head, the higher the household consumption after controlling for all other factors.
88. The impact of education is striking, particularly in urban areas. Relative to households whose heads have no education, having a head with some primary education increases consumption by 11 percent. Completing primary education increases consumption by 26 percent, and secondary education increases consumption by 61 percent. Having a head with a university education increases consumption by more than 100 percent.
89. The impact of secondary or higher education is even greater in rural areas, where a much smaller share of the population reaches secondary school.
http://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTLM/Resources/390041-1134749230121/BF_EmploymentStudy_Final.pdf

So congradulations “Surely” for showing us how true that World Bank report is. Education is Anti-sustainability!

Ms Quammen’s letter clearly demonstrates the effect of AGW fanaticism on the neural connections of the brain.
First symptoms are strange thoughts about harming others.
This is followed by false analogies.
If one person can drown in a tub, imagine how many will be killed by a lake or ocean?
In the advanced stage, fantasies about Clouds and Trees begin to dominate the thought process.
As logical thinking becomes impossible, the resort to clichés becomes the main way to “communicate”. Weapons and Destruction become intertwined with both oral and written communications.
And then, at the final irreversible phase … correct spelling is lost.
So sad to see such a distinguished IPCC Scientist fade so quickly.

Man, Oh, man!…… Ok, yes, it is easy to make fun of Anthony’s friend Sherri. And, I share in the laughter. Clearly, she’s clueless. I’m a crappy speller, too, but I’ve the sense to employ a spell check to help with the difficulty.
All of that stated, I think this is an opportunity, and I hope someone, perhaps Anthony, will take the time to explain to the poor child why people are making fun. I’ll start…….

Sherri, when you suggested Anthony try that suicidal experiment, you seem to be confusing two very different things………. carbon dioxide with carbon monoxide. I can state that the readers at WUWT are very much anti carbon monoxide!! Most are very much against pollutants, and care very deeply about our ecosystems. Where many of us differ from your average CO2 alarmist, is what we believe is actually harmful and what is beneficial for these ecosystems. And, we also differ about what causes changes in the various systems.
For instance, you brought up the no-fly period and notice a drop in temps, but that doesn’t mean the lack of jets caused the drop. In fact, there could be a case made that contrails cool the earth. I think one doesn’t really have much to do with the other. Take, for instance, the last 7 months or so….. satellites tell us the global temps have dropped 1/2 deg C. http://www.woodfortrees.org/plot/uah/from:2011.5 But, I think flights in general have increased over that time period. You see where I’m going with this? Or, am I just another realist stuck in an alarmist world?

Ok, I see where it’s difficult to respond to Sherri in a manner that doesn’t drip with sarcasm and ridicule…… I had to write, and then re-write, and the contemplate, and then write and re-write again. But, someone should reach out to the poor girl! She’s mired in complete ignorance and has been wallowing in it for a very long time!!!

Can I suggested a little test you can conduct in your garage, in company with a dozen or two of your like minded friends. Invite your friends inside your garage along with with adequate provisions for a stay of a week or two, close and seal all the doors. No need to start your car, just pass the time with some good books and the odd parlour game. If the environment inside your garage is truly like the earth’s atmosphere as you suggest, then you will be OK, if not then you were wrong. Should you prove to be wrong then I’m sure you will accept (or would have accepted) that it’s not just gas guzzler cars that need to be banned but humans as well as all other animals.
This is a joke Sherri please do not try this test at home.

May I suggest that Sherri get out of her garage—contrary to her statement, this planet’s climate is nowhere near as cloistered as Anthony’s garage*. Neither would one expect anything but an increase in temperature inside a garage that contained a relatively gargantuan heat source. May I also suggest that Sherri make a concerted effort to define “something like that” when attached to a definitive number—is that the same confidence interval as one, or is it two standard deviations? (On second thought, better not use the term “deviation” or she’ll sue for slander). And if she’s so tall as to be impacted by “polluted clouds”, maybe we should take her threat seriously and get Anthony some protection.
* I wasn’t aware that every person on the planet has “a running car” and a garage to house it, but if they did, all of those garages would cover just 62,000 sq miles, which is just 0.012% of the earth’s total surface area. But I’m sure her head would explode if she discovered Anthony’s car actually runs on a mixture of 41% coal, 21% natural gas, 16% hydro, 14% nuclear, 6% oil, 1% wind, and trace amounts of geothermal and solar (0.3% and 0.06% respectively)—for that’s the relative sources for the world’s electricity.
And finally, I wish those Big Oil and associated Evil Corporations would get Anthony’s address correct so he can finally start receiving all those checks. For all the abuse he’s been taking recently, that would only be fair.

_______________________________
If you thought CO2 was a problem….

The Great Horse-manure crisis of 1894
We commonly read or hear reports to the effect that “If trend X continues, the result will be disaster.”…
The fundamental problem with most predictions of this kind, and particularly the gloomy ones, is that they make a critical, false assumption: that things will go on as they are…..
A classic example of this is a problem that was getting steadily worse about a hundred years ago, so much so that it drove most observers to despair. This was the great horse-manure crisis…..
Nineteenth-century cities depended on thousands of horses for their daily functioning. All transport, whether of goods or people, was drawn by horses. London in 1900 had 11,000 cabs, all horse-powered. There were also several thousand buses, each of which required 12 horses per day, a total of more than 50,000 horses. In addition, there were countless carts, drays, and wains, all working constantly to deliver the goods needed by the rapidly growing population of what was then the largest city in the world. Similar figures could be produced for any great city of the time.*
The problem of course was that all these horses produced huge amounts of manure. A horse will on average produce between 15 and 35 pounds of manure per day. Consequently, the streets of nineteenth-century cities were covered by horse manure. This in turn attracted huge numbers of flies, and the dried and ground-up manure was blown everywhere. In New York in 1900, the population of 100,000 horses produced 2.5 million pounds of horse manure per day, which all had to be swept up and disposed of. (See Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace, Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 [New York: Oxford University Press, 1999])….

Being very well acquainted with the subject of shoveling and moving “Road apples” I think I much prefer CO2. Pehaps “Surely” would like to come and clean the barn for a year and get acquainted with “Sustainability” up close and personal.

March 22, 2012 4:15 pm

This girl has the disease of many people: they want to “save the earth”. It makes them feel like a comic book hero. I sometimes wonder if they even really believe the BS about cAGW or if it is just an excuse to yell at normal people and show how “wonderful” they are. It was the same once with DDT, Ozone, and so on. Something will replace CO2 in a few years but no matter what it is — humanity’s existence will depend on fixing whatever it is.
We need a cool name for this “save the planet” disease. Ideas?

During the three-day commercial flight hiatus, when the artificial clouds known as contrails all but disappeared, the variations in high and low temperatures increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) each day, said meteorological researchers.

Ok, let’s take the experiment seriously for a second
To create a correct physical model, using a garage that’s say 6 metres by 4 metres (ie 24 sq metres) is hopelessly out of scale
Assuming we have 7b people on earth, and a land surface area of about 148 million square kilometres, and a sea surface area of about 362 million square kilometres, then each person has on average 21000 sq metres of land, and 43000 sq metres of sea surface to support their existence.
Now since this is a global average, the land will be a full range from arctic to desert conditions. Sea surface will be mostly salt, but will vary in temperature.
On land, we can expect vegetation to convert some of our waste products to O2, and the water to absorb some of our other by products.
Assuming we have a vertical column of air above, this is a long way from the model proposed by Sherri.
However, I am willing to volunteer for this experience with my SUV (which I do own and operate to make a living) – I’d have far more space and clean air than I enjoy at present – I wonder how my local climate will change?
Andi
PS – I note that Sherri’s lack of grammatical and spelling skills is a sad product of our liberal education systems globally, and a shear lack of understanding of what actually comes out of an SUV’s exhaust is indicative of what passes for science these days
PPS – unless of course this is some huge practical joke in which case you got me hook, line and sinker!

A corollary of this is that they begin to look for comic book bad guys. I’ve heard this so many times. Firstly, I am not sure why we are bothering commenting on this meaningless letter.
She has got a lot of us worked up over very little.
But it does represent the misconceptions of a vast number of AGW supporters.
BTW, my understanding of the temperature change measured during the ‘no-fly’ days was that it was an increase, due to removal of pollution known to be a cooling influence which counteracts what is claimed to be warming from real greenhouse gasses.
My memory fails to recall the video, even though it was only a couple of days ago.
If anyone seriously wants the reference, I will search for it.

There is this article (including the standard homage to the false gods):
http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/Bright-Green/2010/0201/Airplane-contrails-and-their-effect-on-temperatures
During the day it lowers the temperature but at night it rises the temperature.
Simple question of insulation: the blanket keeps the cold out at night but keeps the Sun out during the day.,

This is an old chestnut that is often rolled out.
Contrails can only form when there is a layer of close to supersaturated air. The water vapor content is such that when an aircraft dumps water vapor in engine exhaust at over 600C into the air it almost immediately forms ice crystals. So a layer of nearly 100% humidity – water vapor being a powerful ‘green house gas’ (sic) will absorb and re-radiate infra red. When the contrails form the water vapor is still there but the contrails (usually ice crystals) will raise the albedo reducing solar energy to the ground. If the supersaturated area is large the persistent contrails may spread and turn into cirrus. (Note that clouds will only form in 100% humidity) The cirrus will greatly increase albedo.
If the humidity is not quite high enough then non-persistent contrails form where the ice crystals that form in the jet exhaust relatively rapidly sublimate back into water vapor.
Aircraft are flying over your head in the Continental USA all the time. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1L4GUA8arY But you will only see contrails when the humidity is high enough. Most of the time aircraft motor past at 25,000 ft or higher and you are totally unaware of them. Only when there is sufficient water vapor will you see the contrails. It is the water vapor that will reduce cooling.
9/11 and the following days was a bright clear pre-fall day over most of the country with a dome of high pressure and dry descending air that slowly moved East to the East coast. These days are cooler than normal in September anyway. So the researchers were right it was cooler – but it would probably have been just as cool with the aircraft flying anyway.

Not even in the Commonwealth, or anywhere in the world is the spelling ‘humourous’ correct.
See here:
http://grammarist.com/spelling/humor-humour/
“Humor vs. humour
Humor and humour are different spellings of the same word. Humor is preferred in American English, and humour is preferred in all other major varieties of English. The distinction extends to derivative participles, including humored/humoured and humoring/humouring. But in all varieties of English, the adjective humorous has no u in the second syllable.”

While Sherri has sent you a truly silly email, I am uncomfortable about seeing links to her youtube videos and facebook page posted here. I understand the desire to respond to those who might doubt that such silliness existed in human form. However this almost becomes a case of argumentum ad hominem which is a tactic I despise. I believe we could have admired her wonderful mastery of speling , and the sheer silliness of the arguments in her email without needing to look at her picture or know what thoughts she has posted on her facebook page.
Sherri doesn’t deserve much sympathy as a person who thinks it is OK to suggest people with opposing views should be locked in a garage and gassed. Nevertheless would rather we didn’t resort to dubious tactics ourselves even in the face of provocation.

The college I attended had a requirement for all freshmen to take “Humanities”, which was a mixture of English, History and Philosophy with a heavy emphasis on writing weekly papers. One of the goals of course was to impart a basic level of competance in written communication. One freshman objected to this requirement as “unnecessary” and expressed his resentment in a long and rambling letter to the editor of the school newspaper. One sentence of which I have burned in my memory, although this was just the crown jewel among many lesser gems:

The very reasons name-of-college succeeds is because its total education so disciplines thinking and writing to a degree not found most elsewhere and in a rigorous way.

Case closed.
But honestly, I used to look down on people with minimal English language competence. Now (especially in a forum with many non-native English speakers), I am inclined to go easy on language errors. I still have little tolerance for people who can’t think straight, or who have nothing to say which is worth my time to read.

The video is named ‘Global Dimming’, I intend publishing a post on it.
Reference – http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article15809.htm
I would be interested in Anthony’s take on the hypothesis that air pollution due to soot, dust and other pollutants, apparently including aircraft ’emissions’, increase the atmosphere’s reflectiion parameter and counter ‘Global Warming’?
I think this is an accepted factor, but the video theme is that GHG warming would be scarily worse without the pollution. That is the claim and it could just possibly be true.
On the other hand, I am prepared to believe that the CO2 “generated” warming is much less than warmists claim, both because of the science being unproven and the global temperature assessments being suspect (except when they show decreases 🙂 )

Did you know that Carbon monoxide (CO) is also produced in normal animal metabolism in low quantities, it is also short lived In the atmosphere, it combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and ozone. Ozone apparently protects the planet from harmful UV rays and carbon dioxide is an necessary ingredient for life and it is needed not only by plants but insects and animals too.
The largest source of carbon monoxide is natural in origin, due to photochemical reactions in the troposphere, Other natural sources of CO include volcanoes, forest fires, and other forms of combustion. It is estimated natural sources generate about 5 x 1012 kilograms per year which if you do the math, is substantially more than anthropogenic sources.
Sherri Quammen was correct in pointing out that carbon monoxide can be toxic to humans and animals when they’re exposed to higher concentrations, so it’s not a good idea to run a car in an enclosed space, Duh!, also her basic description, lack of knowledge on the subject and the ridiculous comparison made between a garage and our planets atmosphere reminds me of another ridiculous comparison I keep reading about, anyone like to have a guess to what that is??

Take her up on her recommended experiment! Turn your electric car on (or “running”) in your garage, door closed, and report back the effects on temperature and your health. Do the whole thing legit. Conduct the experiment at night so there is no external effects. Monitor multiple locations properly located around the garage for temperature collection, maybe different instrument types. Enlist a doctor friend you may have to monitor various health effects. Provide a report with graphs showing ambient temperature and heart rate over time, including the effects of eating in your car or talking on your cell phone during the experiment. You could report on any planes flying overhead despite the no fly rule. Have photos of the experiment.

Many folks have commented on the limitations of the American education system as a contributor to Sherri’s writing style. However, I note she does sing and play guitar rather well – evidence of significant intelligence and talent (albeit not the type to gain much traction in a complex scientific and social argument). Actually, her letter was not too bad all considered – no worse than many a sceptical spray (for what it’s worth, I rate myself as a lukewarmer). Her 2007 letter was better constructed even if still a touch extreme.
Has anyone considered that she might also suffer from dyslexia, a common neurological disorder?
At least she cares. Therefore she probably votes. She has a right to vote and hold an opinion even if she expresses it in a ham-fisted fashion replete with eccentric spellings.
Consider the maxim:
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. (attributed to Voltaire)
While I understand Anthony’s frustration with the taunt, I’m pretty sure this won’t be printed, I’m not comfortable with the pillorying meted out to Sherri. I wonder if a kinder and gentler way of dealing with letters of this kind would be to set up a “letters” page separate from the blog where folks could vent to their hearts’ content.

If one car in an enclosed area ( like the Earth’s atmosphere) can kill someone, then imagine what six billion running cars can do.
Uh, last I checked, a garage has a static atmosphere, and the Earth has a dynamic atmosphere.
Carry the same logic forward, how many engines of one centimeter square would it take to fill up a garage to kill a person? (yes the logic is flawed, but no worse than others).
In a 20×20′ garage (the Earth) how small would engines have to be to represent 6 billion cars?
Maybe Willis will do the math?

“New Funding Opportunity: Cap-And-Trade Program
“03/22/2012
“As California’s historic Cap-And-Trade program moves forward, the State Legislature is debating how to utilize new revenues the global warming law is expected to generate. The Cap-And-Trade program sets a limit on major sources of greenhouse gases such as refineries, power plants, industrial facilities, manufacturing facilities, and transportation fuels, and establishes a financial incentive for long-term investments in cleaner fuels and more efficient energy use.
“To ensure a smooth transition to these lower limits, the California Air Resources Board will auction a limited number of allowances permitting companies to emit a specified amount of greenhouse gases. With the first of four auctions in the 2012-13 year to take place in August, the revenues from the Cap-And-Trade auction could generate up to $3 billion. As discussed here, the revenues could provide significant funding for clean and efficient energy, low carbon transportation, natural resources protection and sustainable infrastructure development.

Regarding the lack of contrails after 9/11 leading to a 1 degree drop in temperatures, could the drop in temperature have been due to jet exhaust not heating up some tarmacs (i.e., poorly sited thermometers)? Just something that always bugged me. Was the temperature drop across the entire US? Just under jet routes? Just at certain airports? I wish I had time and energy to answer this for everyone.

This will drive a lot more business away from CA and no one will move in to replace them.

California, like so many other metropolitan areas, lost thousands of jobs between 2008 and 2009, according to the most recent U.S. Census reports. In fact, says Jan Norman, small business columnist for the Orange County Register, California lost more than 21,000 business, more losses than any other state in the country…. http://orangecounty.about.com/b/2011/07/19/california-losing-businesses-at-highest-rate-in-the-nation.htm

Bleeding Green: California losing green businesses
Manufacturers have left the state. California farmers are closing or trying to create farms in Mexico. Large corporations are leaving the State to save tax dollars. Now, even the green firms are leaving the State.
“Green businesses have joined the exodus of California companies leaving the state or expanding only outside state borders….
… the number of companies moving out of the state is five times higher than the rate of companies that moved out of California in 2009….
The massive deficit, regulations like AB 32–illegal aliens taking scholarship money from honest kids, this is a State that is out of control. New Funding Opportunity: Cap-And-Trade Program
By: Carollyn B. Lobell, Josh D. Rosa, Jennifer M. Capitolo
03/22/12
As California’s historic Cap-and-Trade program moves forward, the State Legislature is debating how to utilize new revenues the global warming law is expected to generate. The Cap-and-Trade program sets a limit on major sources of greenhouse gases such as refineries, power plants, industrial facilities, manufacturing facilities, and transportation fuels, and establishes a financial incentive for long-term investments in cleaner fuels and more efficient energy use.
To ensure a smooth transition to these lower limits, the California Air Resources Board will auction a limited number of “allowances” permitting companies to emit a specified amount of greenhouse gases. With the first of four auctions in the 2012-13 year to take place in August, the revenues from the Cap-and-Trade auction could generate up to $3 billion. As discussed below, the revenues could provide significant funding for clean and efficient energy, low carbon transportation, natural resources protection and sustainable infrastructure development.
Description of the Cap-And-Trade Program
Enacted in 2006, AB 32 requires that by 2020, statewide greenhouse gas emissions levels be limited to 1990 levels. In order to help achieve this limit, the Air Resources Board recently adopted regulations (California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Sections 95800 to 96023) to establish a new Cap-and-Trade program that places a “cap” on aggregate greenhouse gas emissions from entities responsible for roughly 80 percent of the State’s greenhouse gas emissions. The program applies to electric utilities and large industrial facilities, starting in 2013. And in 2015, the program applies to distributors of transportation fuel, natural gas, and other fuels. Altogether, about 350 businesses, representing about 600 facilities, will be subject to Cap-and-Trade. The Air Resources Board will issue carbon allowances that these entities will, in turn, be able to “trade” (buy and sell) on the open market. As part of its plan to issue allowances, the Air Resources Board will hold quarterly auctions, at which time a portion of these allowances will be made available for purchase.
Opportunities for Funding
For 2012-13, the Air Resources Board’s auctions are estimated to generate roughly $660 million to upwards of $3 billion. The Governor’s budget for 2012-13 assumes that the state will receive $1 billion from such auctions. Of this amount, the budget assumes that $500 million of the total revenue will be used to offset existing General Fund costs of current greenhouse gas mitigation activities, such as energy efficiency, resource management, and water use efficiency. The remaining revenues will be used on new or expanded programs intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The budget language submitted by the Administration to the Legislature outlines an expenditure plan that could provide funding for any of the following activities:
Industrial and manufacturing facilities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by investment in energy efficiency, energy storage, and clean and renewable energy projects;
Public universities, schools, water agencies, and other public facilities and fleets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by investment in energy and water use efficiency, energy storage, and clean and renewable energy and fuel projects;
The federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program and the federal Weatherization Assistance Program;
Residential and commercial energy efficiency and distributed generation programs that serve to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
Public transportation and sustainable transportation and infrastructure development;
Programs for clean vehicles and the advancement of transportation technologies, including, but not limited to, the Air Quality Improvement Program;
Advanced transportation and fueling infrastructure for zero-emission vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles;
Local and regional sustainable development efforts;
Low-carbon goods movement and freight vehicle technologies and infrastructure, including, but not limited to, locomotives and heavy-duty trucks;
Natural resource management programs and projects;
Land conservation and restoration; and
Development and implementation of sustainable agriculture, forestry, and related water, land, and resource management practices.
While the funds would be generated through the Cap-and-Trade auction, the funding would be available to a wide range of greenhouse gas emission reduction activities that go above and beyond the industries subject to Cap-and-Trade. The potential funding touches all sectors of the California economy and would provide many opportunities for public agencies and private industries to apply for grants to implement research, retrofit, infrastructure and sustainable practices.
Status
During the coming months, the Legislature will review the Administration’s Cap-and-Trade proposal as part of the regular budget process. Additionally, Speaker Perez has introduced AB 1532 and Senator Pavley has introduced SB 1572 which will be the legislative vehicles to outline a more specific expenditure plan for the Cap-and-Trade auction revenues. Now is the time for interested parties to be involved in shaping the guidelines and eligibility for Cap-and-Trade funds.
Jennifer Capitolo and Josh Rosa in Nossaman’s Public Policy Practice Group can assist clients in positioning themselves to secure funding from the Cap-and-Trade program. This includes reviewing potential projects, preparing funding applications and advocacy efforts to ensure competitiveness in the review process. Jennifer leads Nossaman’s Grants and Funding practice and she has successfully secured more than $250 million in funding for clients during the past few years including parks, water, housing, and transportation projects. She can be reached at jcapitolo@nossaman.com or 916.930.7706.
Carollyn Lobell, co-chair of Nossaman’s Environment and Land Use Practice Group, can assist clients with environmental review, compliance and permitting activities related to greenhouse gas emissions regulations. Carollyn has more than 30 years of experience preparing and implementing practical solutions to the project development process and helping public agencies and private organizations with regulatory compliance.

I don’t think you read my comment accurately. I did say that she lacked the kind of intelligence needed to debate in a scientific forum. He also said: “No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”
It was FDR who described America as “the great arsenal of democracy.” That means letting Sherri have her say. Freedom of speech is precious. Only those who have lived in countries where such freedom does not exist truly appreciate this fact.

If one car in an enclosed area ( like the Earth’s atmosphere) can kill someone, then imagine what six billion running cars can do.
So if I fire one bullet into a person’s brain it has to be a hundred times more damaging firing a hundred on a rifle range? That argument which is a direct equivalent of the car exhaust one is so ridiculous I really cannot believe even an idiot would consider using it. Why do the Eco believers have so strong a belief they cannot see how daft they look to others not of their religion?
In just the short time that the government insued [sic] a no fly rule after 9-11 where no planes were allowed in US skies, there was over a one degree cooling of the atmosphere’s temperature or something like that.
A similar one here showed that when there was a no fly time because of the dust cloud the official figures showed a two degree drop near here because the measurements were taken near an airport. Elsewhere on comparison sites merely a mile away there was a less than one degree drop.
All this proves is the the data collection network which was created for a totally different need is not actually fit for purpose when it comes to climate monitoring. This is something that data collection specialists in the engineering worlds have said since 1950.

Reminds me of people who are mortally afraid of food cooked in microwaves.
When you try to clue them up, you then find that they lack so much basic knowledge about the world that even something as simple as a microwave is impossible to explain.
Ironically, greenies are almost always MW phobics, despite the MW being one of the most energy efficient and healthy methods of cooking food — they are certain some juju happens with that evil magnetron to produce poison. They are not sure how this mechanism of supposed food subversion actually works, just that it *does*.
So good luck trying to educate them on more complex science… 🙁
Ridicule is no cure either — we sure get a laugh out of it, but at the end of the day, we’re still left with people scared into hysteria and bad decisions by their ignorance and silly rumours. Shrinks will probably do a better job than scientists here, if it can be done at all.

Well I’m a fan of robust un-mealy mouthed debate, and I have occaisional impulse control issues, sometimes I screen things and they look ok to me and other people get offended. But I’ve never suggested that someone gas themselves, and I’d be darn sure to refer to the correct chemical substance if I did. Whats the public cost of a public education in California nowadays…? Can’t have been a private school or the Grocer’s apostrophe would have been missing.

Assuming your garage was airtight, the car would only run until the oxygen level became too low to permit detonation of the air/fuel mixture in the engines cylinders. You’d die from asphyxiation long before any carbon monoxide could kill you. Just thought someone should mention it.

When I was a young lad many years ago, I watched the Disney movie “Bambi.” This is where I learned Thumper’s law: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing [sic] at all.” It’s in this spirit that I note the often misused word pair: effect/affect, have been used correctly in this diatribe. And following Thumper’s law, that’s about all I can say.

Perhaps she will take up this cause stop DHMO polution.
Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.

Lets read another letter from Sherri
“Re “Bagging restrictions” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, March 8): I have read comments questioning the Chico City Council’s proposed ban on single-use plastic bags. Many people insist that using these bags is a matter of personal choice and believe the best way to curb this wasteful habit is not by banning their use, but through education.
The question is, how do you teach people to behave more sustainably who believe that all these environmental protections and regulations inhibit their freedoms? Answer: You try to appeal to their sensibility.
1. It is estimated that 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used annually, world-wide. Of those about 90 percent go into the landfill and 1-3 percent (approx. 1.5 billion bags) end up in the environment.
2. Once in the environment, plastic bags take months to hundreds of years to decompose, breaking down into tiny, carcinogenic (cancer causing) and endocrine-disrupting HDPE (high-density polyethylene) particles that end up in our soil, waterways and oceans.
3. Two hundred million barrels of oil a year are diverted to manufacture these 500 billion plastic bags. (ABC News)
4. California spends more than $25 million annually to manage plastic-bag pollution and more than $303 million on litter-abatement services.
If this information still doesn’t convince the people who oppose this ban, then that’s why a ban needs to be imposed upon them. It saves dollars, saves oil, saves lives and just makes sense.

No, I meant typical American. Uneducated (in the real sense as opposed to possessing a piece of paper SAYING they are educated), unable or unwilling to think for themselves, believes what they are spoon-fed by their chosen information source (TV news, newspaper, blogs, TV comedy shows, church, Food Network, teachers & professors, or Jersey Shore) uncritically, and thinks that anyone who doesn’t agree is evil and has an underhanded agenda. It may very well be that Miss Quammen is educated and quite intelligent. The problem is, people judge your intelligence on the facts before them. Consistently bad spelling, unfair as it may be, is a sign that you are a lazy inconsiderate dolt.
Life is not fair. If you want people to take you seriously, then for starters, spell correctly. In this day and age, there is ***no*** excuse for poor spelling. When someone is reading your screed, every time there is a misspelling, it’s a mental glottal stop inflicted on your poor reader, who has to stop reading, guess at the supposed correct word, insert it into the information flow, and then attempt to resync to the thought train. At some point, your reader gives up, because any unique information or perspective you may have, is not worth the mental effort and their time to figure it out.
You’re lazy and inconsiderate because you don’t want to do the hard work to make your writings easy to read. And you’re a dolt because you haven’t figured out that when you misspell, your writings are ineffective.

It’s fairly predictable that the majority of comments regarding my letter are filled with venom and hatred. It is what I’ve come to expect from the folks on the right.
I misspell a few words and that negates the message that I’m trying to convey. Global warming is not the real issue here, people. The important thing is to remember that we have only one planet a to live on and that it is this great big beautiful planet that supports our lives, the lives of our children and of their children and all other living things. What we do to this planet, we do to ourselves. Let me put it in a way that you folks might understand, one should not shit in their own bed. When government agencies placed there to protect the interest of th
e citizens of this country get in bed, so to speak with the corporations they are supposed to regulate, then we end up with billion dollar bail outs, outragious gas prices and environmental degradation. Global warming is but the tip of the
(melting) iceburg. What worries me is all the damage that fracking is wrecking on this nation’s ground water. When a person who has had one of these wells on their property can turn on their faucet and set fire to the water coming out of it, that is not a good thing.
By the way, do you know how difficult it is to type a comment via cell phone on this website? If my love of the planet and distain for all who would mindlessly and short sightedly harm makes me your enemy then so be it. You can malign me all you,d like. At least I’m speaking out for what I believe to be true. Do you want to see the proliferation of cancers and other pollution related diseases? Carcenogens are found in so many products including Round Up through glyphosates, plastics, air fresheners, household cleaners. Have you ever had someone you love die of cancer? My mother died last June, my nephew was born withtumors covering his body. Only one planet folks and humans aren’t the only life forms, though we arrogantly act like it. I hope this gets posted because my other one did not.

Sherriq,
sorry about your mother, and your nephew. We all want a healthier planet, however I suspect many people here would disagree with you what the real threats are. Most folks find it hard to understand risks and what we should really fear, so we tend to fear what we don’t really understand.
It is easy to begin to think of all pesticides as bad and all manmade chemcials as bad and yet natural chemicals can be very harmful and something as natural as milk is officially considered to be pollution if you spill a tanker of it into a river.
You mentioned the herbicide Round Up, and glyphosate its active ingredient – these are not considered carcinogenic at all – after a lot of testing. http://environmentalcommons.org/glyphosate.pdf
The ‘worst’ effect is from the surfactant – it has the same effect as concentrated washing up liquid if someone were to drink it – strips the protective lining from your gut.

Sherri,
We don’t hate you. But perhaps more offensively we can’t take you seriously. I know you aren’t delusional, but you sure write like it. Fracking: all the evidence is fracking itself never effects the groundwater. The shale simply is too deep. There is always the possiblity of a poorly sealed well, but that is just as true with conventional drilling. At my aunt’s ranch in Wyoming, forty years ago you could light the gas that came out of the kitchen faucet. It didn’t have anything to do with oil wells.
Believing something, even passionately, with all your heart, doesn’t make it true. Please learn to examine the evidence dispassionately.

Sherriq,
You have made my day, if inadvertently. We do not hate you. Most of us have been mightily entertained, and many of us appreciate a good laugh. Please note the number of people who thought Anthony was pulling a fast one on us with what those people thought was a fabricated letter. Given the content of your letter, that thought was certainly plausible.
Consider that if Anthony had taken you up and done your experiment, it would not have proved your point. Assuming that Anthony used a gasoline powered vehicle (I don’t know what kind he has, and I suspect you don’t either), and he had sufficient fuel, Anthony would be dead, not because of CO2, but either by carbon monoxide poisoning or lack of oxygen, the oxygen having been consumed by combustion. Carbon monoxide has never been a part of the climate debate as far as I know. No one has suggested we will suffocate from carbon dioxide, so your analogy is fatally flawed. It was merely trying to be clever about how you suggest Anthony kill himself. It is you who are hateful and vitriolic to suggest such a thing.
You rail against corporations, yet you use their services and products without apology. You complain about high gas prices (in other posts you have authored) when the current administration likes high prices to slow down consumption of carbon based fuels and make the big oil companies lots of money by artificially limiting supply. Most of the electricity you use to run your computer and be on the internet to post your opinion is non-green sourced. You must be as angry at yourself as with Anthony or the rest of us. That is sad.
What I would like to suggest is that you laugh with us and reconsider your position. For example, consider this video:

The lady in the above video did not have any clue about how rainbows are formed via refraction and reflection in water droplets. She attributed the rainbow to toxic chemicals in the water. She could have easily discovered that her water wasn’t polluted on cloudy days. She could have discovered that pollution had nothing to do with it by using a powerful light on her sprinkler at night. Since she has access to the internet to upload this video, she could easily have googled “rainbows” and discovered how they are made and applied it to her situation. She obviously didn’t. If she had, she didn’t believe, and if that is the case, there is really nothing that can be done for her. I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that nothing can be done for you either, as you can’t even argue your own side of the debate correctly. I’m surprised that your local papers are publishing your uninformed comments. The fact they publish your thoughts does not mean your thoughts are valid. The editors may see the same entertainment value many of us in this thread do. Its been a real hoot. Publication may not necessarily be a compliment.
If you want to be taken seriously, you need to learn about how the arguments for and against limiting carbon usage as a fuel apply and how to use them correctly. While spelling mistakes won’t affect the validity of your arguments, or lack thereof, you should realize you don’t want to give people a reason to ignore you. Spelling errors make you look uneducated and give people another data point that suggests you may not have enough information to come to the conclusions you have come to. If you see a red line under a word, the WordPress editor thinks you have misspelled it. Use Google on such words, and it will let you know about any mistakes with “did you mean ______” where the blank is the potentially misspelled word. You then take that word and use Google on the proposed spelling with “______ definition”. If Google got the spelling correct (it sometimes misses), you will find several dictionaries with an entry on it. I’m guessing that the people who criticized your spelling did so not because it invalidated your arguments, but because it fit with the lack of understanding you have of the subject matter you are attempting to promote. There is no point in inflicting self administered wounds.
Now, Sherri, one last thought I’d like you to consider: in the vast expanse that is the universe, mother nature loves cold. Lots and lots of cold. Like as in 99.999% or more of it is too cold for any kind of life. You might want to appreciate the warmth we have. It has been warmer than now as recently as 1000 years ago during the medieval warm period without harming life as we know it. More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is good for life, especially plants, and may put off for a small time the inevitable swing back to cold. I like warm. Warm is good. 🙂

This discussion brings to mind two concepts I learned in just the last couple of weeks (isn’t it odd how one often learns something new, and immediately sees an application for it?). Those concepts are the Dunning-Kruger Effect, and Anosognosia.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect is when a person’s incompetence masks his/her ability to recognize his/her incompetence. Or as some put it, when a person is so stupid that they don’t realize they’re stupid. That sounds a bit harsh, but we’re not very good at knowing what we don’t know. The less we realize that, the more likely we are to look foolish.
Anosognosia is a condition in which a person who suffers from a disability seems unaware of or denies the existence of his or her disability.
For a very entertaining discussion of these conditions, I suggest reading http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/the-anosognosics-dilemma-1/

Sherri,
I decided to give you the benefit of doubt for the experiment. The atmosphere of earth has a weight of 5×10^18 kg, Now the weight of atmosphere where I am is 1.215 kg/m^3.
My garage is 9x5x2.5 meters or 112.5 cubic meters. So I have ~137 kg of atmosphere in my garage. So with this sense of scale in mind I decided to go ahead and run the worlds cars in my garage. Now there are 800 million cars globally(a little less than your 6 billion number), these produce 3.77×10^12 kg of CO2 annually. So we’re looking at 1kg of co2 added annually per 1.33×10^6Kg of atmosphere.
So scaling this for my garage was difficult to finding a match. In the end I settled for a match. I took a matchbook (made from recycled paper) into my garage and lit it(before anyone corrects me I know that this produces quite a bit more CO2 than is accurate for the experiment, but it’s best to ere on the side of caution.). After waiting a few minutes I checked my thermometer and it showed no change in temperature.
To go for broke I pulled my car into the garage. Now I had another problem, the car displaced about 30 cubic meters of atmosphere, but I decided not to worry at this point. I shut the garage and let the car run for about 10 seconds. This would simulate the emissions of a billion cars over a century. Now admittedly my thermometer I have is only accurate to a degree so it’s not a perfect experiment, but I didn’t see any increase in temperature.
Thank you for your experiment it really helps ease my mind that CO2 is not the big scary monster people make it out to be.
On a side note my car is an old 1983 Mercedes. Current generation cars produce a fraction of the CO2 emitted by my vehicle so we’re actually getting better in that regards.

In her defense, not that I consider any of this defensible, I find that in posting comments with my Android that the “spell checker” can get very creative with its choices and that may explain some of the flicker word
Excellent example! The word “flicker” above resulted after I had typed “florist”.

That’s too funny.
See previous post.
I tried to type “g-o-o-f-I-e-r” and android refuses to let me do it.

IMO, It applies to conservatives as well as liberals – people simply unwilling and unable to take off their ideological blinders and actually THINK about anything.”

Typical human, perhaps. Typical leftist, definitely. Typical American, no way unless you completely ignore the vast expanse between the coasts and judge us by the vocal minority of elitist and arrogant yet illogical and immature nanny state children. The typical American in flyover country is not a spoon-fed robot and has a healthy distrust of the media and the establishment. This is what they normally get criticized for by the pompous asses in the media and ivory towers.
We have the same type of leftists here that exist everywhere else on the planet but we are blessed that they exist here in lower total percentages, although packed like rats in our big cities. Polls consistently show that they are probably 20% of the total. If you add to them the ornery self-described independent 30% they can sometimes muster a united voting majority now and then as they did with President Dumbo (52%).
I guess I am just challenging your term: “No, I meant typical American” because if that is a typical American, then in all other places on Earth they are hyper-typical.
Perhaps we just have a semantic disagreement?

Dear Sherrie
You seem to be among those individuals who think first with their emotions and use facts only when and if they support their opinions. This makes you a very easy mark for a confidence man. You need to exercise the critical skills you have and verify facts upon which your emotionial agguements are based.
First you feel posters who express disagreement with your emotional based opinions are ‘filled with venom and hatred’. While I can undrestand how you came to this opinion your doing so shows the weakness of the way you undestand the world. As I see it your ego was hurt so you decided that obviously the source of the hurt was evil. Second your baises were challenged and rather than deal with the possibility that your basies may not be correct you dismiss the challanges as evil. Your emotions lead the charge and you never had to deal with the fact that your origional letter set the tone for a negative emotional response. Instead you simple added to the negative emotional envirment (as you preceived it) without clearly taking any responsibility to determin the truth yourself. Yes, I know that would take work and may lead you to conculsions that you will find difficult to accept. But, the truth is worth the work.
You have been made to play the fool by your unwillingness to check out facts and verify the truth. Those who hide their attempts to destroy your life behind science have completely deceived you. And you are cluelessly following their claims and being led like a lamb to the slaughter. It does not seem to matter to you that you have clearly expressed incorrect facts in support of your conclusions. I find it sad that someone who wants to save the world supports policies which will cause great harm to human happiness. In the mistaken idea they are doing good.
What you do not understand is that we all live in the same world. Yes, there are those who want to abuse the world and they must be resisted. But, do not become an abuser in your attempt to resist abuse. Show respect to others even when they do not always deserve it. There are of course limits to this as it is not good to be a willing victom of abuse, And any person and organization which has a documented history of deceipt (such as the IPPC) cannot be trusted to suddenly start telling the truth. But, as a general rule you will get more respect if you show it when possible.
It is a wise person who can learn from those who’s opinions vary from theirs. Become wise and grow from the wisdom of others.
To met This site is about fighting the abuse of information espcially the use of scientific information in fradulant ways. We want accountability and honesty in the scientific debate. If you take the time to read the posts here you will discover that outragously incorrect information is being used to suport the warmest side. You should be truly outraged at the abuse of the truth and the implications of the way the warmest arguemnts are presented. They mix a little truth with stunning overstatements and misleading inferences to create the apperance of danger when there is nothing dangerous going on except their attempt to gain power over you.
Your arguement in favor of protecting the planet is wonderful. But, perhaps you have missed the fact that your agruement is being used as an excuse to adopt policies which will cause unthinkably inhuman results. Big corporations and big government are involved in a power grab which will if fully implimented take your home and freedom and move you do a little reservation. Check out agenda 21. Your love and concern has blinded you. As long as you remain blind you will remain a tool of your own undiong.
All the Best

“…

…”

Just a bit of a correction if I may.
While CO2 is not toxic as CO is, too much of it could displace oxygen and cause death by asphyxiation. I don’t know the safe ppm limits for CO2 but it is higher than 5000ppm, a level that is not unusual in submarines and other enclosed spaces.
