When I suggested (WUWT May 22nd, 2007) that Mr. Watts park his gas guzzler in the garage, close all the doors and leave his engine running, it was a humourous [sic] yet effective attempt to make a point to all the ney [sic] sayers that man has drastically affected this planet’s climate as well as it’s [sic] very fragile, life supporting eco-systems.
I merely suggested that he try a little experiment at home comparing the effects from the exaust [sic] of just one running vehicle on his health as well as the probable increase of temperature in his garage. He obviously knows that many folks have commited [sic] suicide doing this or he wouldn’t have avoided the real issue and instead call me a vitral [sic] filled leftist or what ever he said at the time. If one car in an enclosed area ( like the Earth’s atmosphere) can kill someone, then imagine what six billion running cars can do.
In just the short time that the government insued [sic] a no fly rule after 9-11 where no planes were allowed in US skies, there was over a one degree cooling of the atmosphere’s temperature or something like that. Can you see where I’m going with this, or am I just another tree hugging earth lover with my head in the polluted clouds? I’m pretty sure this won’t be printed. We can expect as much from a man paid by the corporations to be a weapon of mass deception.

I’m extremely shocked (shocked, I say) that you are not worried about probably the nastiest of GHGs. Namely DiHydrogen Oxide. Very deadly stuff. Extremely corrosive and can kill an adult (if inhaled) in less than 10 minutes. It has arguably killed and injured more animal and plant life (including humans) than CO and CO2 combined. Property damage from this destructive chemical has an extremely high annual cost. In certain areas of the country, it has kept the premiums up on certain types of insurance.
It is, quite often, an industrial waste product and is regulated haphazardly. Large spills of this substance have happened more frequently than you might imagine (oil spills are nothing to this).
It has been known to affect the quality and quantity of groundwater. We need to ensure that laws

Let’s see, Ms. Quammen. Six billion running cars in the atmosphere… (bit more than we have, but never mind). Volume of lower atmosphere (below 5 km) is 2.55×10¹⁸ m³. Divided by 6 billion is 4.25×10⁸ m³, the volume containing a single running car. It is a spherical dome with diameter 1175 m (3856 feet) and height 588 m (1928 feet). You know what? I would risk being in a garage of that size while the engine is running…
Provided, of course, the atmosphere is well mixed. But this is why we have all those towers with huge industrial mixers installed; they make wind, don’t they?

I just find this letter sad. Hopefully there are some letters that Anthony receives that are much more knowledgeable as to the “debate” on climate change.
To be honest, while I’m on the side of believing that humanity’s impact on the climate is probably not that significant on a global scale (a position, I’ll admit, I didn’t always hold), I think that highlighting a letter such as this is just as wrong as when those on the other side of the “debate” highlight ignorant comments made by those who disagree with the AGW (or CAGW) position.
However, I also appreciate that Anthony must receive a significant number of letters such as this (and he has my sympathy for having to read them in the first place), and sometimes he needs to share them for the laugh. Can I suggest that the “humor” tag be added to this article?

Invite your friends inside your garage along with with adequate provisions for a stay of a week or two, close and seal all the doors. No need to start your car, just pass the time with some good books and the odd parlour game. If the environment inside your garage is truly like the earth’s atmosphere as you suggest, then you will be OK, if not then you were wrong. Should you prove to be wrong then I’m sure you will accept (or would have accepted) that it’s not just gas guzzler cars that need to be banned but humans as well as all other animals.

Ok, let’s take the experiment seriously for a second
To create a correct physical model, using a garage that’s say 6 metres by 4 metres (ie 24 sq metres) is hopelessly out of scale
Assuming we have 7b people on earth, and a land surface area of about 148 million square kilometres, and a sea surface area of about 362 million square kilometres, then each person has on average 21000 sq metres of land, and 43000 sq metres of sea surface to support their existence.
Now since this is a global average, the land will be a full range from arctic to desert conditions. Sea surface will be mostly salt, but will vary in temperature.
On land, we can expect vegetation to convert some of our waste products to O2, and the water to absorb some of our other by products.
Assuming we have a vertical column of air above, this is a long way from the model proposed by Sherri.
However, I am willing to volunteer for this experience with my SUV (which I do own and operate to make a living) – I’d have far more space and clean air than I enjoy at present – I wonder how my local climate will change?

But it does represent the misconceptions of a vast number of AGW supporters.
BTW, my understanding of the temperature change measured during the ‘no-fly’ days was that it was an increase, due to removal of pollution known to be a cooling influence which counteracts what is claimed to be warming from real greenhouse gasses.
My memory fails to recall the video, even though it was only a couple of days ago.

Simple question of insulation: the blanket keeps the cold out at night but keeps the Sun out during the day.,
This is an old chestnut that is often rolled out.
Contrails can only form when there is a layer of close to supersaturated air. The water vapor content is such that when an aircraft dumps water vapor in engine exhaust at over 600C into the air it almost immediately forms ice crystals. So a layer of nearly 100% humidity – water vapor being a powerful ‘green house gas’ (sic) will absorb and re-radiate infra red. When the contrails form the water vapor is still there but the contrails (usually ice crystals) will raise the albedo reducing solar energy to the ground. If the supersaturated area is large the persistent contrails may spread and turn into cirrus. (Note that clouds will only form in 100% humidity) The cirrus will greatly increase albedo.
If the humidity is not quite high enough then non-persistent contrails form where the ice crystals that form in the jet exhaust relatively rapidly sublimate back into water vapor.
Aircraft are flying over your head in the Continental USA all the time. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1L4GUA8arY But you will only see contrails when the humidity is high enough. Most of the time aircraft motor past at 25,000 ft or higher and you are totally unaware of them. Only when there is sufficient water vapor will you see the contrails. It is the water vapor that will reduce cooling.
9/11 and the following days was a bright clear pre-fall day over most of the country with a dome of high pressure and dry descending air that slowly moved East to the East coast. These days are cooler than normal in September anyway. So the researchers were right it was cooler – but it would probably have been just as cool with the aircraft flying anyway.

While Sherri has sent you a truly silly email, I am uncomfortable about seeing links to her youtube videos and facebook page posted here. I understand the desire to respond to those who might doubt that such silliness existed in human form. However this almost becomes a case of argumentum ad hominem which is a tactic I despise. I believe we could have admired her wonderful mastery of speling , and the sheer silliness of the arguments in her email without needing to look at her picture or know what thoughts she has posted on her facebook page.
Sherri doesn’t deserve much sympathy as a person who thinks it is OK to suggest people with opposing views should be locked in a garage and gassed. Nevertheless would rather we didn’t resort to dubious tactics ourselves even in the face of provocation.
The college I attended had a requirement for all freshmen to take “Humanities”, which was a mixture of English, History and Philosophy with a heavy emphasis on writing weekly papers. One of the goals of course was to impart a basic level of competance in written communication. I would be interested in Anthony’s take on the hypothesis that air pollution due to soot, dust and other pollutants, apparently including aircraft ’emissions’, increase the atmosphere’s reflectiion parameter and counter ‘Global Warming’?
I think this is an accepted factor, but the video theme is that GHG warming would be scarily worse without the pollution. That is the claim and it could just possibly be true.
On the other hand, I am prepared to believe that the CO2 “generated” warming is much less than warmists claim, both because of the science being unproven and the global temperature assessments being suspect (except when they show decreases 🙂 )

Did you know that Carbon monoxide (CO) is also produced in normal animal metabolism in low quantities, it is also short lived In the atmosphere, it combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and ozone. Ozone apparently protects the planet from harmful UV rays and carbon dioxide is an necessary ingredient for life and it is needed not only by plants but insects and animals too.
The largest source of carbon monoxide is natural in origin, due to photochemical reactions in the troposphere, Other natural sources of CO include volcanoes, forest fires, and other forms of combustion. It is estimated natural sources generate about 5 x 1012 kilograms per year which if you do the math, is substantially more than anthropogenic sources.
Sherri Quammen was correct in pointing out that carbon monoxide can be toxic to humans and animals when they’re exposed to higher concentrations, so it’s not a good idea to run a car in an enclosed space, Duh!, also her basic description, lack of knowledge on the subject and the ridiculous comparison made between a garage and our planets atmosphere reminds me of another ridiculous comparison I keep reading about, anyone like to have a guess to what that is??

Take her up on her recommended experiment! Turn your electric car on (or “running”) in your garage, door closed, and report back the effects on temperature and your health. Do the whole thing legit. Conduct the experiment at night so there is no external effects. Monitor multiple locations properly located around the garage for temperature collection, maybe different instrument types. Enlist a doctor friend you may have to monitor various health effects. Provide a report with graphs showing ambient temperature and heart rate over time, including the effects of eating in your car or talking on your cell phone during the experiment. You could report on any planes flying overhead despite the no fly rule. Have photos of the experiment.

Regarding the lack of contrails after 9/11 leading to a 1 degree drop in temperatures, could the drop in temperature have been due to jet exhaust not heating up some tarmacs (i.e., poorly sited thermometers)? Just something that always bugged me. Was the temperature drop across the entire US? Just under jet routes? Just at certain airports? I wish I had time and energy to answer this for everyone.

As California’s historic Cap-and-Trade program moves forward, the State Legislature is debating how to utilize new revenues the global warming law is expected to generate. The Cap-and-Trade program sets a limit on major sources of greenhouse gases such as refineries, power plants, industrial facilities, manufacturing facilities, and transportation fuels, and establishes a financial incentive for long-term investments in cleaner fuels and more efficient energy use.
To ensure a smooth transition to these lower limits, the California Air Resources Board will auction a limited number of “allowances” permitting companies to emit a specified amount of greenhouse gases. With the first of four auctions in the 2012-13 year to take place in August, the revenues from the Cap-and-Trade auction could generate up to $3 billion. As discussed below, the revenues could provide significant funding for clean and efficient energy, low carbon transportation, natural resources protection and sustainable infrastructure development.
Description of the Cap-And-Trade Program
Enacted in 2006, AB 32 requires that by 2020, statewide greenhouse gas emissions levels be limited to 1990 levels. In order to help achieve this limit, the Air Resources Board recently adopted regulations (California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Sections 95800 to 96023) to establish a new Cap-and-Trade program that places a “cap” on aggregate greenhouse gas emissions from entities responsible for roughly 80 percent of the State’s greenhouse gas emissions. The program applies to electric utilities and large industrial facilities, starting in 2013. And in 2015, the program applies to distributors of transportation fuel, natural gas, and other fuels. Altogether, about 350 businesses, representing about 600 facilities, will be subject to Cap-and-Trade. The Air Resources Board will issue carbon allowances that these entities will, in turn, be able to “trade” (buy and sell) on the open market. As part of its plan to issue allowances, the Air Resources Board will hold quarterly auctions, at which time a portion of these allowances will be made available for purchase.
Opportunities for Funding
For 2012-13, the Air Resources Board’s auctions are estimated to generate roughly $660 million to upwards of $3 billion. The Governor’s budget for 2012-13 assumes that the state will receive $1 billion from such auctions. Of this amount, the budget assumes that $500 million of the total revenue will be used to offset existing General Fund costs of current greenhouse gas mitigation activities, such as energy efficiency, resource management, and water use efficiency. The remaining revenues will be used on new or expanded programs intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The budget language submitted by the Administration to the Legislature outlines an expenditure plan that could provide funding for any of the following activities:
Industrial and manufacturing facilities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by investment in energy efficiency, energy storage, and clean and renewable energy projects;
Public universities, schools, water agencies, and other public facilities and fleets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by investment in energy and water use efficiency, energy storage, and clean and renewable energy and fuel projects;
The federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program and the federal Weatherization Assistance Program;
Residential and commercial energy efficiency and distributed generation programs that serve to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
Public transportation and sustainable transportation and infrastructure development;
Programs for clean vehicles and the advancement of transportation technologies, including, but not limited to, the Air Quality Improvement Program;
Advanced transportation and fueling infrastructure for zero-emission vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles;
Local and regional sustainable development efforts;
Low-carbon goods movement and freight vehicle technologies and infrastructure, including, but not limited to, locomotives and heavy-duty trucks;
Natural resource management programs and projects;
Land conservation and restoration; and
Development and implementation of sustainable agriculture, forestry, and related water, land, and resource management practices.
While the funds would be generated through the Cap-and-Trade auction, the funding would be available to a wide range of greenhouse gas emission reduction activities that go above and beyond the industries subject to Cap-and-Trade. The potential funding touches all sectors of the California economy and would provide many opportunities for public agencies and private industries to apply for grants to implement research, retrofit, infrastructure and sustainable practices.
Status
During the coming months, the Legislature will review the Administration’s Cap-and-Trade proposal as part of the regular budget process. Additionally, Speaker Perez has introduced AB 1532 and Senator Pavley has introduced SB 1572 which will be the legislative vehicles to outline a more specific expenditure plan for the Cap-and-Trade auction revenues. Now is the time for interested parties to be involved in shaping the guidelines and eligibility for Cap-and-Trade funds.

If one car in an enclosed area ( like the Earth’s atmosphere) can kill someone, then imagine what six billion running cars can do.
So if I fire one bullet into a person’s brain it has to be a hundred times more damaging firing a hundred on a rifle range? That argument which is a direct equivalent of the car exhaust one is so ridiculous I really cannot believe even an idiot would consider using it. Why do the Eco believers have so strong a belief they cannot see how daft they look to others not of their religion?
In just the short time that the government insued [sic] a no fly rule after 9-11 where no planes were allowed in US skies, there was over a one degree cooling of the atmosphere’s temperature or something like that.
A similar one here showed that when there was a no fly time because of the dust cloud the official figures showed a two degree drop near here because the measurements were taken near an airport. Elsewhere on comparison sites merely a mile away there was a less than one degree drop.
All this proves is the the data collection network which was created for a totally different need is not actually fit for purpose when it comes to climate monitoring. This is something that data collection specialists in the engineering worlds have said since 1950.

The letter your refer to was published in our local daily, and the editor, David Little, routinely corrects spelling and grammatical errors in letters hes publishes. True, It is why I have advocated home schooling for years and even passed on information as to where to look into it on the internet. Heck as a student in junior high school I noticed the marked deterioration in education because I tutored.
Assuming your garage was airtight, the car would only run until the oxygen level became too low to permit detonation of the air/fuel mixture in the engines cylinders. You’d die from asphyxiation long before any carbon monoxide could kill you. Just thought someone should mention it.

It may very well be that Miss Quammen is educated and quite intelligent. The problem is, people judge your intelligence on the facts before them. Consistently bad spelling, unfair as it may be, is a sign that you are a lazy inconsiderate dolt.
Life is not fair. If you want people to take you seriously, then for starters, spell correctly. In this day and age, there is ***no*** excuse for poor spelling. When someone is reading your screed, every time there is a misspelling, it’s a mental glottal stop inflicted on your poor reader, who has to stop reading, guess at the supposed correct word, insert it into the information flow, and then attempt to resync to the thought train. At some point, your reader gives up, because any unique information or perspective you may have, is not worth the mental effort and their time to figure it out.
You’re lazy and inconsiderate because you don’t want to do the hard work to make your writings easy to read. And you’re a dolt because you haven’t figured out that when you misspell, your writings are ineffective.

sorry about your mother, and your nephew. We all want a healthier planet, however I suspect many people here would disagree with you what the real threats are. Most folks find it hard to understand risks and what we should really fear, so we tend to fear what we don’t really understand.
It is easy to begin to think of all pesticides as bad and all manmade chemcials as bad and yet natural chemicals can be very harmful and something as natural as milk is officially considered to be pollution if you spill a tanker of it into a river.

Fracking: all the evidence is fracking itself never effects the groundwater. The shale simply is too deep. There is always the possiblity of a poorly sealed well, but that is just as true with conventional drilling. At my aunt’s ranch in Wyoming, forty years ago you could light the gas that came out of the kitchen faucet. It didn’t have anything to do with oil wells.
Believing something, even passionately, with all your heart, doesn’t make it true. Please learn to examine the evidence dispassionately.

You have made my day, if inadvertently. We do not hate you. Most of us have been mightily entertained, and many of us appreciate a good laugh. Please note the number of people who thought Anthony was pulling a fast one on us with what those people thought was a fabricated letter. Given the content of your letter, that thought was certainly plausible.
Consider that if Anthony had taken you up and done your experiment, it would not have proved your point. Assuming that Anthony used a gasoline powered vehicle (I don’t know what kind he has, and I suspect you don’t either), and he had sufficient fuel, Anthony would be dead, not because of CO2, but either by carbon monoxide poisoning or lack of oxygen, the oxygen having been consumed by combustion. Carbon monoxide has never been a part of the climate debate as far as I know. No one has suggested we will suffocate from carbon dioxide, so your analogy is fatally flawed. It was merely trying to be clever about how you suggest Anthony kill himself. It is you who are hateful and vitriolic to suggest such a thing.
You rail against corporations, yet you use their services and products without apology. You complain about high gas prices (in other posts you have authored) when the current administration likes high prices to slow down consumption of carbon based fuels and make the big oil companies lots of money by artificially limiting supply. Most of the electricity you use to run your computer and be on the internet to post your opinion is non-green sourced. You must be as angry at yourself as with Anthony or the rest of us. That is sad.
What I would like to suggest is that you laugh with us and reconsider your position. For example, consider this video:
The lady in the above video did not have any clue about how rainbows are formed via refraction and reflection in water droplets. She attributed the rainbow to toxic chemicals in the water. She could have easily discovered that her water wasn’t polluted on cloudy days. She could have discovered that pollution had nothing to do with it by using a powerful light on her sprinkler at night. Since she has access to the internet to upload this video, she could easily have googled “rainbows” and discovered how they are made and applied it to her situation. She obviously didn’t. If she had, she didn’t believe, and if that is the case, there is really nothing that can be done for her. I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that nothing can be done for you either, as you can’t even argue your own side of the debate correctly. I’m surprised that your local papers are publishing your uninformed comments. The fact they publish your thoughts does not mean your thoughts are valid. The editors may see the same entertainment value many of us in this thread do. Its been a real hoot. Publication may not necessarily be a compliment.
If you want to be taken seriously, you need to learn about how the arguments for and against limiting carbon usage as a fuel apply and how to use them correctly. While spelling mistakes won’t affect the validity of your arguments, or lack thereof, you should realize you don’t want to give people a reason to ignore you. Spelling errors make you look uneducated and give people another data point that suggests you may not have enough information to come to the conclusions you have come to. If you see a red line under a word, the WordPress editor thinks you have misspelled it. Use Google on such words, and it will let you know about any mistakes with “did you mean ______” where the blank is the potentially misspelled word. You then take that word and use Google on the proposed spelling with “______ definition”. If Google got the spelling correct (it sometimes misses), you will find several dictionaries with an entry on it. I’m guessing that the people who criticized your spelling did so not because it invalidated your arguments, but because it fit with the lack of understanding you have of the subject matter you are attempting to promote. There is no point in inflicting self administered wounds.
Now, Sherri, one last thought I’d like you to consider: in the vast expanse that is the universe, mother nature loves cold. Lots and lots of cold. Like as in 99.999% or more of it is too cold for any kind of life. You might want to appreciate the warmth we have. It has been warmer than now as recently as 1000 years ago during the medieval warm period without harming life as we know it. More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is good for life, especially plants, and may put off for a small time the inevitable swing back to cold. I like warm. Warm is good. 🙂

The following is not directed at the sincere Ms Quammen. This discussion brings to mind two concepts I learned in just the last couple of weeks (isn’t it odd how one often learns something new, and immediately sees an application for it?). Those concepts are the Dunning-Kruger Effect, and Anosognosia.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect is when a person’s incompetence masks his/her ability to recognize his/her incompetence. Or as some put it, when a person is so stupid that they don’t realize they’re stupid. That sounds a bit harsh, but we’re not very good at knowing what we don’t know. The less we realize that, the more likely we are to look foolish.
Anosognosia is a condition in which a person who suffers from a disability seems unaware of or denies the existence of his or her disability.

I decided to give you the benefit of doubt for the experiment. The atmosphere of earth has a weight of 5×10^18 kg, Now the weight of atmosphere where I am is 1.215 kg/m^3.
My garage is 9x5x2.5 meters or 112.5 cubic meters. So I have ~137 kg of atmosphere in my garage. So with this sense of scale in mind I decided to go ahead and run the worlds cars in my garage. Now there are 800 million cars globally(a little less than your 6 billion number), these produce 3.77×10^12 kg of CO2 annually. So we’re looking at 1kg of co2 added annually per 1.33×10^6Kg of atmosphere.
So scaling this for my garage was difficult to finding a match. In the end I settled for a match. I took a matchbook (made from recycled paper) into my garage and lit it(before anyone corrects me I know that this produces quite a bit more CO2 than is accurate for the experiment, but it’s best to ere on the side of caution.). After waiting a few minutes I checked my thermometer and it showed no change in temperature.
To go for broke I pulled my car into the garage. Now I had another problem, the car displaced about 30 cubic meters of atmosphere, but I decided not to worry at this point. I shut the garage and let the car run for about 10 seconds. This would simulate the emissions of a billion cars over a century. Now admittedly my thermometer I have is only accurate to a degree so it’s not a perfect experiment, but I didn’t see any increase in temperature.
Thank you for your experiment it really helps ease my mind that CO2 is not the big scary monster people make it out to be.
On a side note my car is an old 1983 Mercedes. Current generation cars produce a fraction of the CO2 emitted by my vehicle so we’re actually getting better in that regards.

You seem to be among those individuals who think first with their emotions and use facts only when and if they support their opinions. This makes you a very easy mark for a confidence man. You need to exercise the critical skills you have and verify facts upon which your emotionial agguements are based.
First you feel posters who express disagreement with your emotional based opinions are ‘filled with venom and hatred’. While I can undrestand how you came to this opinion your doing so shows the weakness of the way you undestand the world. As I see it your ego was hurt so you decided that obviously the source of the hurt was evil. Second your baises were challenged and rather than deal with the possibility that your basies may not be correct you dismiss the challanges as evil. Your emotions lead the charge and you never had to deal with the fact that your origional letter set the tone for a negative emotional response. Instead you simple added to the negative emotional envirment (as you preceived it) without clearly taking any responsibility to determin the truth yourself. Yes, I know that would take work and may lead you to conculsions that you will find difficult to accept. But, the truth is worth the work.
You have been made to play the fool by your unwillingness to check out facts and verify the truth. Those who hide their attempts to destroy your life behind science have completely deceived you. And you are cluelessly following their claims and being led like a lamb to the slaughter. It does not seem to matter to you that you have clearly expressed incorrect facts in support of your conclusions. I find it sad that someone who wants to save the world supports policies which will cause great harm to human happiness. In the mistaken idea they are doing good.
What you do not understand is that we all live in the same world. Yes, there are those who want to abuse the world and they must be resisted. But, do not become an abuser in your attempt to resist abuse. Show respect to others even when they do not always deserve it. There are of course limits to this as it is not good to be a willing victom of abuse, And any person and organization which has a documented history of deceipt (such as the IPPC) cannot be trusted to suddenly start telling the truth. But, as a general rule you will get more respect if you show it when possible.
It is a wise person who can learn from those who’s opinions vary from theirs. Become wise and grow from the wisdom of others.

If you take the time to read the posts here you will discover that outragously incorrect information is being used to suport the warmest side. You should be truly outraged at the abuse of the truth and the implications of the way the warmest arguemnts are presented. They mix a little truth with stunning overstatements and misleading inferences to create the apperance of danger when there is nothing dangerous going on except their attempt to gain power over you.
Your arguement in favor of protecting the planet is wonderful. But, perhaps you have missed the fact that your agruement is being used as an excuse to adopt policies which will cause unthinkably inhuman results. Big corporations and big government are involved in a power grab which will if fully implimented take your home and freedom and move you do a little reservation. Check out agenda 21. Your love and concern has blinded you. As long as you remain blind you will remain a tool of your own undiong.

Just a bit of a correction if I may.
While CO2 is not toxic as CO is, too much of it could displace oxygen and cause death by asphyxiation. I don’t know the safe ppm limits for CO2 but it is higher than 5000ppm, a level that is not unusual in submarines and other enclosed spaces.
