Peter Gleick, a nationally known expert on water and climate issues, on Friday asked for a short-term leave of absence from the Oakland-based Pacific Institute, where he is co-founder and president.

The Heartland Institute released a string of emails Friday that Gleick sent to Heartland earlier this year that show how Gleick pretended to be a Heartland board member to get copies of documents sent to a gmail email address. Heartland has set up a website detailing the e-mails at Fakegate.org.

“Given the events of the past week, I would like, with the permission of the Board, to take a temporary, short-term leave of absence from the Institute,” said Gleick in a letter released Friday. “I believe such a leave would allow the Institute staff to continue to refocus on its work, while permitting the Board to conduct a full and fair review and determine an appropriate course of action.”

I find it odd that he needs to request a leave of absence as when I took a cursory glance of the tax forms for the pacific institute it appeared that despite the lengthy list of board members it appeared that Gleick was the only one taking a wage ( some $130+ K for a couple of hours a week work if I recall correctly? if that position comes up I think i can do it ;)) and it always seemed to me to be just a pet project all of his own that obviously kept him in in dolphin-friendly cous-cous and in my opinion, based upon his behaviour of late, not a few bottles of chardonnay.

There are a lot of things that are disappearing. I posted a comment at Junkscience and that disappeared too! Anyway, there was a small issue I found with the grants by the government to Pacific institute is that using the DUNS number of Pac Inst. 860029271 and using the advanced search at http://www.USAspending.gov. The site lists all 13 contracts and 7 grants since about the year 2000 is still completely searchable. What was interesting is how the web site totals the amount of grants. It appears there are some double listings for the same grants. Presumably statement of work changes or something similar? Anyway, totals don’t match up.
My guess is that it is just cover for his next operation. He is penetrating the Iranian nuclear weapons program to sabotage it and save the world.
On his way back he will stop by North Korea and bamboozle the communists in their program for world domination and thereby save the world.
After lunch he will bring down the Syrian regime and save the world.
Before nightfall my guess is that he will have infiltrated alqaeda, spilled all its secrets and saved the world.
But will we ever thank him for his efforts?…
I AM curious regarding changes to Gleick’s current cash flow, which is the bottom line in episodes like this (or any, really). That will be key to his future decisions. As I’m sure people like Georage Soros etc are keenly aware of.

According to their website, one of their programs is a science integrity initiative: “The Science Integrity Initiative responds to and counters the assault on science and scientific integrity in the public policy arena”. And their president is Peter Gleick. Says it all.

I mean, the worst he’s facing is 20 years Federal time for the wire fraud, perhaps more than one count, which would mean 20 years for EACH count. Probably more criminal time (state AND federal) for the identity theft. So, what, worst case he’s facing the rest of his useful life in prison. As a corporate officer of The Pacific Institute, Gleick may well have created liability for the institute itself. They may not be able to distance themselves from this.

Gleick requesting a “short term” leave of absence speaks volumes. Gleick apparently thinks that this will eventually die down, and he can resume his position at the institute he co-founded.
If Gleick has any shred of the ethics he so loudly proclaimed, he would resign. Not the mealy-mouthed type of resignation from the AGU where his resignation was stated for “personal reasons”, but a resignation that boldly states he is taking responsibility for his own actions, and does not wish to drag the Pacific Institute into this.
Short term leave of absence though does not bode well for this leader-of-all-things-ethical actually taking responsibility for his own failings. It does speak volumes about the kind of ethics he actually lives by.
Now, now, leave Arlo and Pete out of this. Dragging them into this means we will have to cross swords.
After all, Arlo took full responsibility for placing that envelope underneath that pile of trash!

The fact that he carried on shows that he wasn’t looking for something specific as that. I would say he just wanted to have some material for starting his crusade at NSCE, no matter what. He targeted Heartland because he got that invitation by them – he felt provoked, and he could have started the crusade with an attack on any of the known climate-sceptic outlets.

But this is a topsy turvy world where the Activist-science community (acti-science) have 1000 times the, cash & PR resources & so own the debate. I can only hope that means that the lawyers from PI are making the termination of Gleick neat and tidy.
It sounds grand, but what really is the Pacific Institute, and how many people actually do work there? It seems Gleick is its only paid “employee” (and paid a ton, not counting trips, expenses, etc.), and that over the years, millions of dollars have been poured into it by the U.S. government using taxpayers’ money. PI, which is tax-exempt, turns around and uses this grant money for political purposes, including propaganda, and pushing or opposing specific political candidates: all in violation of federal laws.
It seems to me that a large percentage of alleged non-profits are just scams created by crooks to get free government money and sucker contributions, and to provide employment and cushy benefits for themselves. If our government weren’t so politicized, maybe the FBI, Justice Department, etc. would put an end to this trillion-dollar rip-off, but without fake charities, the unemployment numbers would be twice as high, and politicians would have to raise money from real individuals, instead of giving tax money to the fake charities so they can funnel some of it back in the form of contributions.
Pacific Institute are completely right not to remove him, they obviously need Gleicks skills to get business done. Heartland Institute was the one organization he got found out committing fraud on, how many more organizations has he infiltrated or impersonated.

I’m sure $152K is just the beginning of his taxable income – he certainly earns much more than that.
You know, I never want to deny anyone the opportunity to make buck, but what has struck me about the CAGW scientists is that they want to make you believe they’re not in it for the money – B.S.! OF COURSE, they’re in it for the money! Let me know when they start doing their “science” for free. And as we all know, there are a lot of opportunities these days to make big money in the climate industry versus, say, being in the service of “big oil” or “big energy” or “big whatever”.
BTW, I am guessing that we will be hearing about Peter Gleick taking a leave of absence at a rehab ranch somewhere in the California mountains, where he can eat organic yogurt, take yoga classes, and meditate with Buddhist camp councilors.
Why the assumption that AGU wants an impartial arbiter of scientific ethics?

My employer has a written policy that permits limited personal use of the computer system, a not-so-written expectation that the work gets done, and makes it easy to to work at home (on clearly personal equipment), but basically expects the job to get done.
OTOH, using company resources to help commit wire fraud would be grounds for immediate dismissal, at least at my level.

The “absence” is simply a smart tactical move by both sides. The Institute gets to wait and see how bad the damage is before making a decision. (And there will be the normal rally ’round the Chief mindset in the meantime.) The absence sends a signal that the Institute is taking ‘some’ action, albeit small in this case.
And Gleick likewise keeps his options open to see how bad is the pressure over time or whether the American short memory works to his favor. There is actually a high probability of his returning via the “absence” route. If the Institute was truly upset they would have canned him versus leaving the door open. (Also keeps them from a possible termination lawsuit and large payment to Gleick. Even if he is wrong, that would be cheaper than court.)

The American Geophysical Union has responed quickly to the ethical challenge of the EPA funded advocate, turned cyber high jinkster. The NEW Director of the AGU Task Force on Scientific Ethics is to be fellow Gleick TFSE committee member Dr Linda Gundersen. Dr Gundersen is the Director of the Office of Science Quality and Intergity with the US Geological Survey. Therefore the seamless ‘Continuity of Government’ oversight on the philosophical direction of science will be maintained….lest you think that big brother might be forced to recuse itself over ‘ethics’.
This place is so much more entertaining than any MSM, I can’t imagine ever being subjected to that distorted world again. Thanks to all for the thought provoking, insightful. and clever posts.

Nothing on the PI website this morning; so they’re not distancing themselves fast enough. The problem is, he’s the president of the board, and their highest paid staff member. What astonishes me, given the other names on that board, is that they have been so slow – they have to know that their Directors and Officers policy is at risk, here, to say nothing of all their contracts.
What they’re thinking defeats me.

That’s what I’m saying. All this theater about asking for a leave is hilarious. Who is he asking? Gleick IS the Pacific Institute, a fantasy “non-profit organization” sucking up millions of dollars from government and stooge contributors to do what? Apparently, Pacific Institute spends most of HIS time penning rants about skeptics and Republicans, or trying to find dirt on them, for which he pays himself $152,000 a year (not counting free trips, expenses, etc.) out of taxpayer and donor funds (and a good number of those taxpayers are skeptics and/or Republicans), in violation of federal and state laws. I wonder how much he paid himself for his fraudulent review of Donna Laframboise’s book on Amazon. I wonder how much he would have paid himself if he had bothered to actually read the book before setting out to defame it and its author, and to do her financial harm. I guess he missed the part about Laframboise being a liberal and former vice president of the Canadian Civil Liberties Union. And this man–a cruel, egotistical, vicious, lying, grant-writing, rent-seeking tax-parasite–is what some segments of our society (the segments he is involved with) call a scientific ethicist?
His fishing expedition to get dirt on Heartland, which he failed to find, inspiring the fabrication of “incriminating” documents, which his vile followers are still pretending are revealing about Heartland, should now be turned around on him, them, and PI, and any other fake non-profit he and his little band of friends are involved with. Of course they’ve falsified everything concerning climate change, because this is the ruse around which they’ve built their grant requests. Without other peoples’ money, they would all be broke. Who would hire them? The Mob?
Time for the skeptics to be demanding criminal investigations into the hundreds or thousands of fake grant-seeking, often political, “non-profits” behind the global warming scaremongering. And this includes all the universities bleeding tax payers dry for money the universities most certainly do not need.
Is it legal to start a fund that would ask for Whistleblowers to come forward with knowledge of fraudulent NOAA, NASA, or Pacific Institute grant wrongdoings? Personally, I could not do this, but I could & would contribute & donate my time to the effort. What say yee all!
I expect Gleick will be sneaking back to his ancestral home in Lake Wobegon, to seek solace in the welcoming arms of his relatives, who it seems make up most of this small towns population. It was here that he first developed his interest in water during the years spent ice fishing and swimming in, what turned out to be, the radioactive lake!
Here’s hoping he enjoys eating several nice big dishes of lutefisk while contemplating his misdeeds… š
And this year’s 2012 Climate B.S.* ā award (even though its only February) goes to: PETER GLEICK. Here’s a quote about him from the 2011 Climate B.S. award:

Someone suggested it was one of the myriad Tides Foundation cat’s paws/shell foundations. That would explain its funding and focus.
Tides isn’t listed on the Pacific Institute’s 2011 funding organizations list.The 2010 audit doesn’t show Tides – be sure to read the notes, the statements qua statements won’t tell you what you want to know. The Open Society Institute gave a $78,272 grant or contract in 2009, which had not completely paid out at the end of 2010 (see page 12 of the audit).
I’m not seeing much that surprises me on PI’s financials at all. It’s pretty standard fare for the kind of organization it is. I have no way of assessing the quality of the work they do under contracts, so I’ll leave that to people with the expertise.
The staff list is pretty much what you’d expect. There’s a few people with Ph.D.’s, and a bunch of support staff. Most of the payroll (page 5 of the audit) goes to program, not that much to General/Administrative, and none to fundraising – that’s contracted out.

I hope he gathers a support group around him that will also watch out for signs of exhaustion. That he may have done what he is being accused of does not negate the fact that he is human and may be at risk of having severe emotional and physical pain. I am sorry that he may be feeling those things while still being disapponted in his actions.

Justice requires that thinking skeptics rise above, not sink to the level of anger and hatred that infests some of the extreme AGW scientists.
Yeah, right, I just want to rise above them too. Defeat there ideas, defeat the hatred they show for me, I just want to be left alone & not be taxed because I exhaled, because my run-off, ran-off… because any energy process gives off a by-product that they conniveingly say is destroying the earth. “Beware of those who want to save the world… they really only want to control us!” And, I don’t care if they are tired, or they think I’m angry. They want to bring us down. My path to victory over these forces doesn’t need to have it’s motivation questioned.
I’m with you, I just want to rise above them, defeat there crazy ideas that will enslave me, that will enslave the world to deprivation… and when they are defeated, I don’t care how tired, unhappy they are… they & their children will eventually see the Light. Or…
Arguing with Dr. G is about as fruitful as arguing with a rock. Maybe he can see that now. Though I doubt it. U can’t argue with a mind filled with emotion and such a person does not make a good addition to a debate that should be based on facts, observation, and unbiased hypothesis. Sometimes a great mirror is in the face of the opposition.
