For some reason I’m reminded of the lines from, “Have Some Madeira, M’Dear!” — (something like):
“Then she recalled her dear Mother’s words uttered
With her ante-penultimate breath:
‘If you should look on the wine when ’tis red,
Be prepared for a fate
Woise than death!”

At least winegate had a friendly spin-off, the enjoyment of a glass of red wine with spouse, family or friends.

It all goes to show that crooks in the world of science are not confined to climate science. At least, from what I have read, nothing this crooked resveratrol scientist did invalidates the notion that red wine is good for you — any more so than the actions of the crooked climate scientists invalidates the inescapable fact that the climate is always changing.
Good for Josh!

Worse. I fear it’s more along the lines of part of the recipe for Statism. Every good despot needs a boogeyman to justify the control. It’s for your own good! Hell, some folks suggested trying “climate deniers” for crimes against humanity: Heretic!

Whilst helping Donna Laframboise with her IPCC Citizens Audit, I decided to check the IPCC AR4 for anything that might BENEFIT from a warming world.
The only thing I could find was WINE. Higher alcohol content and higher quality in most regions studied.
Here is an excerpt from AR4 WG2 Chp1 Box 1.2 page 105

In Alsace, France, the number of days with a mean daily temperature above 10Ā°C (favourable for vine activity) has increased from 170 around 1970 to 210 at the end of the 20th century (DuchĆŖne and Schneider, 2005). An increase associated with a lower year-to-year variability in the last 15 years of the heliothermal index of Huglin (Seguin et al., 2004) has been observed for all the wine-producing areas of France, documenting favourable conditions for wine, in terms of both quality and stability.
Similar trends in the average growing-season temperatures (April-October for the Northern Hemisphere) have been observed at the main sites of viticultural production in Europe (Jones, 2005). The same tendencies have also been found in the California, Oregon and Washington vineyards of the USA (Nemani et al., 2001; Jones, 2005).
The consequences of warming are already detectable in wine quality, as shown by DuchĆŖne and Schneider (2005), with a gradual increase in the potential alcohol levels at harvest for Riesling in Alsace of nearly 2% volume in the last 30 years. On a worldwide scale, for 25 of the 30 analysed regions, increasing trends of vintage ratings (average rise of 13.3 points on a 100-point scale for every 1Ā°C warmer during the growing season), with lower vintage-to-vintage variation, has been
established (Jones, 2005).

I wonder how that snuck into the AR4?
I’m guessing we’ll all drink to that.

I’ll stick to my tinto… but I’m struggling with a “modeling” problem:
What is the trade-off between dangerous global warming and a warmist world government?
Or say, how much global warming would I have preferred to endure rather than living under a regime conceived by some of the most doomsday-preaching individuals and organizations, where dissenters at best are ridiculized and/or denigrated and/or subject to Berufsferbot, and at worst subject to “no pressure”?
There have been heroes in the world who personally have suffered a lot more for freedom than a couple of degrees warmer conditions. Many of us are even their grandchildren.
Cheers!

“An extensive misconduct investigation that took three years to complete and produced a 60,000-page report, concludes that a researcher who has come to prominence in recent years for his investigations into the beneficial properties of resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, ā€œis guilty of 145 counts of fabrication and falsification of dataā€.”
Three years and 60,000 pages? In the very target rich environment for possible investigations of scientific malfeasance, what is most amusing and/or angering is that this is the cluck they chose to invest such a massive amount of time, effort and money investigating. In the last couple of years, just the small fraction of the ongoing deluge of PR science that Anthony has found time to blog about includes almost weekly examples of works that are much more egregious and in need of scrutiny than this fellows efforts which, while admittedly huge, apparently did little to distort other findings in his field.

not so FUNNY:
13 Jan: Guardian: Suzanne Goldenberg: US teachers offered support for climate change lessons
National Centre for Science Education gives teachers advice on how to deal with demand to drop classes on climate change
An organisation that has championed the teaching of evolution in America’s schools is offering support to teachers who have come under attack for lessons on climate change.
The National Centre for Science Education (NCSE), which has worked for 30 years to keep evolution in the classroom, said it will begin offering teachers advice on how to deal with students, parents, and even school authorities demanding they drop classes on climate change.
“We have been getting anecdotal reports for a couple of years now of teachers getting hammered for teaching climate science ā€“ just like they did for teaching evolution,” said Eugenie Scott, director of the centre.
The new initiative launches on 16 January ā€“ in the throes of a Republican primary contest in which candidates have fallen over each other to discredit climate change, or the link to human activity…
Virginia’s attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli, is pursuing the climate scientist Michael Mann through the courts, to gain access to his email and other work documents.
Mann used to work at the University of Virginia. Cuccinelli says he is investigating fraud; university lawyers told the court on Thursday he was mounting an assault on academic freedom…
In an online survey last year conducted by Nesta, more than 25% of teachers reported disputes with students, parents, or school administrators who doubted the existence of climate change, or that it was caused by human activity.
Some 82% of respondents to a similar online survey last year by the National Science Teachers Association reported encountering climate change scepticism ā€“ including 26% who faced such doubt from school administrators. “I do fear for the upcoming generation,” said Scott. “If teachers are intimidated and neglect this topic for fear of raising controversy we wil have a new generation that is under-educated and less concerned about an issue than they need to be.”

I do agree with youā€¦but, about 40 years ago it was conducted a test, making drink wine to a group of americans who used to drink whisky, and making drink whiskey to a group of italians who used to drink wine. The result of the test?: The majority of both groups got addicted and some became alcoholic. So it seems there is something in the genes…

Margaret Thatcher did not like:
Trade unions
The National health service
Free education.
But she did like
Free and unrestrained capitalism.
Authoritarian government
Empire Building and empire maintenance.
On the other hand, China as a committed communist state does not have:
Trade unions
The National health service
Free education.
But does like:
Free and unrestrained capitalism.
Authoritarian government
Empire Building and empire maintenance.
See the difference? Incidentally both talked the talk on climate change, but did not walk the walk.
Thoughts like this occur when I am over-refreshed on the life promoting properties of red wine. It cannot but be good for you!
