100m countup open thread

UPDATE: Anyone who can get the screencap showing the counter at 100,000,000 on the right sidebar will get a free 100 million coffee cup with a special cartoon from Josh – Anthony

Hilary Ostrov writes via email:

Not sure where else to post this so that you will see it, but as I write, your blogstats are sitting at 99,965,942 views … so your blog is rapidly approaching a very significant milestone – which I anticipate will probably be reached within the next day or so (if not sooner!)

May I suggest that you start a Countup thread, so that lurkers and fans may express their thoughts as this milestone approaches … This will build excitement and traffic – and confound the “powers that wannabe”, I’m sure 😉

On one hand it thought to myself “it’s just a number, no big deal” on the other hand I thought “this only comes once, and a number of people have emailed me about it, so there must be some excitement going on”.

So, who am I to argue with the lady? Sound off below.

As a visual image of 100 million vs the US population….
Of any group gathered anywhere in the USA, a theater, classroom, assembly, congress, etc,
30 percent of those in the room would raise their hand knowing who WUWT is.
I know these are not unique views, but this visual image is quite remarkable.
GREAT JOB !!! Anthony et al.

Anthony,
This is a unique blog. Back in late 2009 when I first found out about the “silly factor” surrounding climate science, I found out about your blog I think from Icecap. Anyhow, the first time I logged on, I thought it was a student’s blog – it was just my first impression – there was such an atmosphere of innocent discovery and a true curiosity that just came through to me. It was only after a while that I figured out what a giant you have created here.
Anyhow, climate science and meteorology are not my chosen fields – I’m an engineer. But, I am also a voting citizen in a democracy so it is important to be informed and participate in discovering the truth of so-called man-made global warming – so here I am; you are stuck with me now. There is a lot to learn here, and I appreciate the forum/salon you have created.
Congratulations on your continuing success.

Best of the Web!

January 6, 2012 11:01 pm

For many, many years I felt very lonely in my reluctance to accept CAGW.
It seemed as if the whole world had swallowed the Lie and although I had my pre-Warmism
meteo data and text books, as well as my history books for support…there were times I thought that maybe I ‘was’ a nutty, fringe dwelling, contrarian denier. (not many admittedly)
One hundred million hits on a website that Google keeps stashed away on page 46…tells me that the tide has turned.
I don’t always agree with everything everyone says on here, and despite the shameful behaviour of so called Environmentalists I still think of myself as caring about the ecosphere…or habitat or whatever it’s called nowadays.
I do however value and respect the fantastic efforts (mostly unpaid) of very bright amateur Scientists who have shown up the Climategang for the nasty, greedy self aggrandizing fraudsters they so clearly are.
So, well done Anthony and Team.
Well done FOIA.
One HUNDRED MILLION events that give us all a bit of hope.

Anthony,
The blogs set up to push the CAGW agenda have forgotten that the way to convert the world to their point of view is one head at a time. Being smart-alec, being rude, being holier than thou does not work. Encouraging the little jackels who scavenge round the bigs beasts and sneer at anyone who disagrees with The Cause doesn’t cut it either.
Thank you for keeping your temper (almost!) all the time, thank you for trying to meet halfway people who have no intention of giving an inch.
And thank you for publishing mixed metaphors….

In the time I have been coming here I have watched the site become much more accepted in the wider community as a solid source of unbiased information.
The Pro AGW mob in the early days would attack a poster like rabid dogs for refernecing anything from here. They tried and failed to demean its posters and laugh off its content as the ravings of mentally defective know nothings.
Oh how things have changed, the quality and breadth of content laid these lies to rest and now large numbers of individuals view the site as the fountainhead of Propoganda free science content. Also it is a site where alternative views can be freely expressed without censorship , this assumes the poster can handle the heat of the wide and varied readers of course.
Keep up the good work and on to the next Milestone 🙂

All – please note – it will probably not be possible for us to identify who is the actual 100,000,000th visitor or where they come from – the person might not comment. In fact we’ll only be able to pinpoint the approx. time the landmark is reached by a visitor telling us when they note it has passed the landmark. A flurry of visitors at 99,999,990 and it could be very difficult to be sure as I’m not sure if the count number updates after every single view or it jumps as it updates periodically. It’ll be interesting to see if several people make claim of being first to see the number has passed the post. Currently at 99,982,148 views.

Followed for a long time but never posted. Congrats on the milestone.
Just a question if I may (not sure where to ask).
I noticed on the Sea Ice Reference Page that the Northern Hemishere Sea Ice Anomaly was -.593 million sq km’s from the average mean and the southern was +.597 million sq km’s. Does that mean (pardon the pun) that we now have 3000 sq km’s more ice globally than the mean from 1978 to 2008 or have I grabbed the wrong end of the stick?
Cheers

Amazing how WUWT is linking us all altogether.

At 11.30 GMT, the count is 99,983,249 views!
And the view from Cardiff (Wales) is sunny and mild – put that in your pipe and smoke it, AGWers!
Congratulations to all who contribute, moderate, post – and especially to Anthony who made and makes it possible.
Certainly one reason for getting the 100.000.000 views is the mixture of fun contributions and the very high-powered scientific debates one can find here at WUWT.
I don’t mind saying that the UCT threads and the ensuing debates make me feel as if I’m back in school and am allowed to listen in to some eminent professors debating issues I can just about grasp, learning all the time. I love it!

Note from the last few comments that the view counter only updates about every 5 minutes and now that the East coast has woken up we’re proably on 100-150 views per minute. As I said earlier – there will be no one person ideantifiable as the hundred millionth visitor.

Congratulations to all concerned. While I am not necessarily of the same political view of many who post and comment here, I do share the interest of most contributors in finding out what we can about the workings of Earth’s climate system(s), and the potential impacts (if any) that mankind’s activities may be having on it (them).
One thing that I have learned over the years that I have been visiting, is that what we don’t know far exceeds, by orders of magnitude, what we do know. And I have learned that the people on one side are more open to discussion and dissent than are those on the other side. When I first started reading climate blogs, I very quickly discovered where to go if I wanted to find out facts, rather than opinions.

Well earned Anthony Watts!
This blog shows that science can survive the vicious attacks of the non-scientists posturing as “Post-Modern, Post-Normal,” post-understanding “climate scientists.”
As my professors at the ETH said on more than one occasion, if they have to put science in the name, it isn’t science. Science is HOW sapient species learn about the universe, NOT what they claim to do.

What, natural variability? What, diurnal cycle? What, people waking up in America? How can you come up with that? That’s typical de***r stuff, cycles. If that were real, there would be a correction factor for that.
How can you say that a computer mathematical model, based on a extremely robust zero intercept least-squares fit with a R-squared of 0.963 (done with that Excel hi-tech thing) doesn’t incontrovertibly predict the future? There’s a 97% consensus on that.
The problem with de***rs is that scientists do robust, beer-reviewed science typing away on their keyboards, then all de***rs have to do is say things from the top of their heads and decent scientists have to listen to them and, God forbid, provide the data and methods too? How can one do science if one keeps being pestered with requests for how one did it?
Nah! Me wants me grants and me PlayStations and me minions! Arrh arrh arrh!

While I realise you are following an accepted methodology, your computer model in this case underestimates the rate of accumulation. It seems I may have overestimated by using a value of daylight forcing that was at the top end of the acceptable range (a ‘climategate value’).
Actually, I’m not going to post a revised estimate as I do have an unfair advantage and I reckon I won’t be too far off.

Sorry again for the triple post. The usual system feedback didn’t occur.

ANTHONY/MODS…. if you can narrow it down to a single person do they get a new coffee cup? Mine has gotten quite stained while glued to this AGW saga over the years and I just might stay and go for it, that split-second 100,000,000th press of the so often hit… [ Post Comment ]. ☺
Anthony, moderators, guest posters, commentators, lurkers (and, ok, warmists and trolls) and their supportive families, you have done it. This is by all means the most amazing science story of our times. An open and mostly serious avenue to exchange ideas and knowledge about the science of our physical world and atmosphere that has taken climate science one giant leap right out of the late nineteenth century mentality so embedded within the climate computer models today. Anthony, you have lead this to history, no doubt about it!

The consensus in in! I’m a DENIER because I love my quantum mechanics (damned quantum jumping…)! This blog is fantastic because the consensus-ites are taken to task and simply asked to ‘show their work’.so that it might be held to scrutiny. Sadly, for some, that’s asking too much. Oh, well!

January 7, 2012 6:44 am

Anthony, guest writers, moderators;
It was about a year ago that I first started following your site to gain a better understanding of the technical, social, political and economic points of view around climate, weather and energy. I look forward to my email inbox for the latest updates. As the 1912 edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac says- “Human progress in large measure consists in acquisition of mastery”
Your site has helped me gain some understanding in the complexities- thanks for all you and the team do.

RE: Joe Zeise says:January 7, 2012 at 7:08 am: “I switched……from Drudge to WUWT as my home page a year ago”
Drudge is pretty much useless, and not just on climategate etc. issues. For a guy who claims to have made his bones covering what no one else would (Lewinsky), he’s remarkably silent on a lot of damned serious issues… until their well and thoroughly covered elsewhere.
Drudge’s recent emphasis on Prison Planet “reports” doesn’t do a lot for whatever credibility he might have had.
But, I confess, sometimes I do still check Drudge out. For much the same reason I’ll glance at the National Inquirer in check out lines: some mild amusement during a brief period of boredom. But certainly not for edification or enlightenment.

Currently 100,051,629 views, so we’re talking upward of 50,000 views per day. I ‘advertise’ WUWT on my own website, and frequently on Rantburg and Facebook. I hope I’ve had some small hand in reaching this number beyond my own personal views. The more people who read WUWT, the better off the world will be. The more people learn and understand how poorly we really understand climate, the less the possibility of the warmenistas winning their battle to destroy civilization as we know it. It’s a battle worth fighting! Here’s to our general, Anthony Watts!

Anthony,
It is too bad that you took the weekend off working on your comouter, because we had planned a party for you and apparently you didn’t see the invite. Invitations went out to everyone, but the Aussies didn’t show up because they won’t get their invites until yesterday…
A lot of your commenters showed up to party and to help. Willis almost didn’t make it, since he hitchiked and all. Wayne set off some fireworks; Gareth Phillips brought dancing girls and chocolate; Dave and Jorgen F. brought some nice but stinky cigars; Chris B was trying to sell carbon credits, but no one took him up on the deal; Tallbloke was here with his computers, but he wouldn’t let them out of his sight; Verity Jones made a quick trip here, but spent her evening out digging in the clay out back ( not sure what that was about). Beth Cooper helped me light 100,000,000 candles on the cake ( and believe me it was hard to find a cake big enough for all the candles) but R Gates blew them all out because of all the CO2 produced.
Orkneygal and DaveR brought beer; BernardJ contributed some fine champagne; and Stephen Brown had some very smooth whisky. Jimmy Haigh, newtlove and catweazle666 also contributed, or at least owned up to having a few. We won’t even talk about Bloke down the pub. We also had lots of fizzy non-alcoholic drinks for those who don’t drink alcohol.
Slide rules came out as the engineering types showed each other their latest calculations. Bob Tisdale unfurled a roll of charts that would choke a horse and there were some heated discussions from that corner of the room. I had to take some hockey sticks away from a few of the guests, who were a little too enthusiastic in the house, especially with so many guests. I think I saw Mike, Phil, Kevin and Ben peering over the fence, but they never ventured into the house. Maybe Verity out digging holes in the yard scared them off.
Smokey stopped by, as did Lubos Motl, E.M.Smith, Mike Bromley and even Mr. Lynn. I was surprised when Lord Monckton dropped in.(literally) I know I didn’t see everyone, but most signed the guest book. The consensus was that you missed a great party, and we plan to have another when you reach your next milestone.
Congratulations. Judy F

I should like to add my heartfelt congratulations to Anthony Watts and all those who have made this site such a huge success, although, as an Arts rather than Science person, I am unable to contribute to the contents itself. The only thing, I suspect, I did contribute was the term “pal review”, which Professor Jerome Ravetz gave currency through one of his contributions, after a comment of mine on an earlier article of his, referring to me as “one witty blogger”. I can see, however, that the truth-seeking sceptics are right and the agenda-driven alarmists deadwrong.
One question though: would it not be possbile to provide the number of commenters (after all theiir email address is bound to have been stored somewhere) and also the number of article writers with the number of contributions to to their credit? Surely, this would add some more interesting information on the success of this site!
Also I wholeheartedly agree with Willis Eschenbach’s wish that many more commenters would feel they can afford the luxury of writing under their own name.
