AGU Fellowships are easy… "With a Little Help from My Friends"

…with apologies to the Beatles and Sgt. Pepper. Most people don’t see how small and cliqueish climate science is, perhaps this perfect illustration courtesy of Climategate 2.0 will enlighten a few people. Thanks to Tom Nelson for ferreting this one out.

Teamwork: Tight little group of warmists write letters to support Michael Mann’s drive to make Phil Jones an AGU fellow

Email 836

p.s. Kevin T is also writing a letter, as long as he can get it done before he heads out traveling in a couple days [Mann]…

Hi Phil,

This is coming along nicely. I’ve got 5 very strong supporting letter writers lined up to support your AGU Fellowship nomination (confidentially: Ben Santer, Tom Karl, Jean Jouzel, and Lonnie Thompson have all agreed, waiting to hear back from one more individual, maximum is six letters including mine as nominator).Ā  [Michael Mann]

2008 ClimateGate email

Lonnie is also confirmed as supporting letter writer, along w/ Kevin, Ben, Tom K, and Jean J. (4 of the 5 are already AGU fellows, which I’m told is important! Surprisingly, Ben is not yet, nor am I. But David Thompson is (quite young for one of these). I’m guessing Mike Wallace and Susan Solomon might have had something to do w/ that šŸ˜‰Ā Ā  [Mann to Phil Jones]

The rot from the inside of the Climategate apple is slowly being exposed, roll on the release of the rest of the emails, what a backslapping disgusting insider trading group this is, ego before duty or morals!!

What was it Wegman said about cliques of climate “scientists”?
What was it Tom Wigley said about “co-conspirators” in CG1?

The smaller the number of researchers in a field, the more likely it is to be dominated by a clique. The effect on the process of peer review is the pernicious aspect.

the fruits of their labour, include the aviation tax, which sounds like buying a pig in a poke:
2 Jan: Times of India: Carbon tax may push up airfare to EU nations
From January 1, carbon emissions by aircraft flying into 27 European Union (EU) countries, including the United Kingdom, will be measured as the airline industry will come under the EU emission trading scheme, making carriers that exceed their carbon limit liable to pay a carbon tax…
There will be no immediate impact on airfares as the tax will come into effect only after an airline has crossed its carbon emission limit as laid down by the EU…
***As of Tuesday, none of the airlines in India that fly to Europe had received communication from EU on the carbon emission limit. Once an airline crosses limit, it will need to buy carbon credits through the emission trade scheme…

another tax that goes up and up, and goes into GENERAL REVENUE:
30 Dec: Manchester Evening News: Calls to scrap ā€˜air taxā€™
Air Passenger Duty is passed onto passengers through ticket prices and will rise to more than Ā£180 a ticket in the most extreme case from April next year.
It is touted as a green tax, but airline bosses say the fact they will join the EUā€™s Emissions Trading Scheme from January 1 means there is no need to have APD as well…
A consortium of airline bosses were today joined by Manchester Airports Groups chiefs in hitting out at the “injustice” of APD. In a joint statement, easyJet boss Carolyn McCall, British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh, Michael Oā€™Leary, of Ryanair and Steve Ridgway, from Virgin Atlantic, said: “The reality is that no APD revenue has ever been spent on environmental benefit…

Anthony, u might find this amusing…or not! Happy New Year, same as the old year!
2 Dec: Minneapolis Star Tribune: James P. Lenfestey: The state of fear at the new year
The anti-climate-change crowd refuses to yield to the evidence…
I wondered where she (Republican gubernatorial aspirant Sue Jeffers ) got this nonsense, so I checked her website. There she promotes links to the Republican Party, the Tea Party, and a site called “Minnesotans for Climate Change,” which is linked regularly to Wattsupwiththat.com. Mystery solved — mad Anthony Watts is a major source for the misinformation she dumps on her listeners.
Watts is an anti-climate-science blogger with a background in television meteorology, not climate science. His mocking assertions have provided no end of fuel for climate-change “skeptics,” particularly his misguided alarms about records showing an upward trend in global temperatures…

They are so fragrant.
The question is though does their actions break AGU rules and if so should they not be dealt with accordingly.
I am sure there is a later email where Mann asks Honest Phil to return the favour?

Aside from the fact it illustrates (again) that a very small clique of opinionated and influential people dominate the field – to the apparent detriment of any science being done – I’m not sure I see anything noteworthy.
We have overwhelming evidence already pointing to domination by a few individuals.
I struggle to see anything reprehensible per se about this sort of proposal / seconding / support / lobbying.

I suppose if you NEED a fellowship to enable you to strutt your stuff and boost your own ego “for the cause” then its’ only “noble corruption” and justifiable, just like cooking data, hiding data, and denying your opposition any voice, yep sounds like Climate science of the team variety…..

Stacey:
Go to http://assassinationscience.com/climategate/ where the following CG1 emails lay out the details of the sordid affair of Mann getting Jones in and then asking Jones to return the favour:
1196872660
1212435868
1212924720
1213201481
1213882741
1242749575
It is this last one where Mann asks Phil to return the favour:
“On a completely unrelated note, I was wondering if you, perhaps in tandem w some of the other usual suspects, might be interested in returning the favor this year”
Honour, what honour?

AGU Fellows
To be elected a Fellow of AGU is a special tribute for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions. Nominated Fellows must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences. Primary criteria for evaluation in scientific eminence are major breakthrough/discovery and paradigm shift. This designation is conferred upon not more than 0.1% of all AGU members in any given year. New Fellows are chosen by a Committee of Fellows.
Philip D Jones received this prestigious tribute in 2009 but it seems missed out on the ā€˜With A Little Help My Friendsā€ statuette. Can this be presented retrospectively?
Perhaps Ricky Gervais could fit it in on Jan 15? I am sure he would do it well.

We see exactly the same sort of cronyism in the award of the EGUā€™s Oeschger medal.
see Climategate 2.0 email 1412
ā€œraymond s bradley wrote[to Michael Mann]:
I was totally surprised to learn I was selected for the EGUā€™s Oeschger medal this
yearā€“so if you had anything to do with that, many, many thanks. I knew Hans quite well
and so this is especially meaningful for me. Phil got the first Oeschger Medal so I
know I am following in his big shoes. But I canā€™t help feeling itā€™s all a clerical error
somehow and a correction letter will appear any day nowā€¦.
Phil Jones wrote:
Ray,
I have been nominating you for several years, as has Andre
and Jean ā€“ I think. Not sure how much the last two have been
involved [in the EGU] recently. I havenā€™t been for a few years.
So, congratulations ! If as in previous years, you get asked about
future awards, then consider nominating Keith and/or Mike. In the
past it has alternated between ice cores and othersā€¦ ā€œ
Surprise, surprise – this year Mann has been awarded the EGU Oeschger medal so that now Jones, Bradley and Mann are all recipients. These medals seem to operate almost on a ‘pass the parcel’ basis!!

Well, the AGU is a private organization and so can do what it pleases with it’s members’ money/dues. Of course, their members lobby for and receive huge sums of government money, often times based on these accolades when a proposal is being evaluated.

The Nobel prize for Science has the same track record. And I mean the real prize, not the peace prize. The latter is a thousand times worse. No shock here. It happens even when the recipient is worthy.

The same thing was shown in the Climategate I emails. Is this a different organization? In the first instance, the candidate (I don’t remember which one, but I think it was Mann) being put forward for membership in some supposedly prestigious scientific organization, admitted to misrepresenting (by indirectly taking credit for a similarly-named author’s work) his publishing record. Yet, I’ve read nothing about this supposedly prestigious scientific organization, finding this out from the emails, pitching him on his ass. Doubtless, nobody in this supposedly prestigious scientific organization ever bothered to read the emails. Ignorance is bliss.
The “Team,” a little band of egotistical nerds pathetically collecting undeserved awards and accolades, and constantly seeking new ones, reminds me of a relative who used to buy university degrees from diploma mills. When I told him they were fake, he had a fit, insisting that he’d paid good money for them, and, therefore, were legitimate.

Over at ‘Real Climate’ was this gem, posted on Dec 19
“I have long complained about the lack of willingness of most contrarians to attend and present their arguments at mainstream scientific conferences. After three years of convening climate-related sessions at AGU, I have yet to receive an abstract that argues against anthropogenic global warming.”
In the light of these particular ClimateGate exposes, I’d like to figure the odds against a ‘contrarian’ ever getting his abstract accepted for an AGU session.

Thanks Philip. So one has to blend emails from both batches to get the full picture. These charlatans should be frogmarched into the public square for mass ridicule, but instead they just keep piling up more undeserved awards, and boasting of them. I’ve never encountered children this pretentious and self-absorbed. I wonder if the Team’s parents all have bumper stickers on their cars saying “My kid is a member of (fill in the blank).”
Here’s a good rule of thumb: Believing oneself to be brilliant, evolved, enlightened, special, important, generous, charitable, spiritual, beautiful, handsome, or the center of the Universe almost always denotes the opposite.

Brian, he wouldn’t buy, because he couldn’t frame it and hang it on a wall. He actually, honestly, truly believes that his diploma mill doctorate (in something, I can’t remember what) is 100% authentic, and gets mad when people don’t address him as “Dr. So and So.” Many of America’s foremost this or that have diploma mill degrees. England’s notorious former Bantridge Forest School, under the alleged Sussex College of Technology, and Bantridge University (including one “branch” in Hawaii and six or seven others elsewhere) have “graduated” hundreds of CEOs, teachers, professors, executives of every stripe, and a zillion bible-thumping ministers–all of them wielding fake Ph.Ds. Who knows how many are in government positions around the world?
