Mystery solved — mad Anthony Watts is a major source for the misinformation she dumps on her listeners.
Watts is an anti-climate-science blogger with a background in television meteorology, not climate science. His mocking assertions have provided no end of fuel for climate-change “skeptics,” particularly his misguided alarms about records showing an upward trend in global temperatures…

Aside from the fact it illustrates (again) that a very small clique of opinionated and influential people dominate the field – to the apparent detriment of any science being done – I’m not sure I see anything noteworthy.
We have overwhelming evidence already pointing to domination by a few individuals.
I struggle to see anything reprehensible per se about this sort of proposal / seconding / support / lobbying.
I suppose if you NEED a fellowship to enable you to strutt your stuff and boost your own ego “for the cause” then its’ only “noble corruption” and justifiable, just like cooking data, hiding data, and denying your opposition any voice, yep sounds like Climate science of the team variety…..

AGU Fellows
To be elected a Fellow of AGU is a special tribute for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions. Nominated Fellows must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences. Primary criteria for evaluation in scientific eminence are major breakthrough/discovery and paradigm shift. This designation is conferred upon not more than 0.1% of all AGU members in any given year. New Fellows are chosen by a Committee of Fellows.
Philip D Jones received this prestigious tribute in 2009 but it seems missed out on the āWith A Little Help My Friendsā statuette. Can this be presented retrospectively?

Surprise, surprise – this year Mann has been awarded the EGU Oeschger medal so that now Jones, Bradley and Mann are all recipients. These medals seem to operate almost on a ‘pass the parcel’ basis!!

Well, the AGU is a private organization and so can do what it pleases with it’s members’ money/dues. Of course, their members lobby for and receive huge sums of government money, often times based on these accolades when a proposal is being evaluated.

The Nobel prize for Science has the same track record. And I mean the real prize, not the peace prize. The latter is a thousand times worse. No shock here. It happens even when the recipient is worthy.
The same thing was shown in the Climategate I emails. Is this a different organization? In the first instance, the candidate (I don’t remember which one, but I think it was Mann) being put forward for membership in some supposedly prestigious scientific organization, admitted to misrepresenting (by indirectly taking credit for a similarly-named author’s work) his publishing record. Yet, I’ve read nothing about this supposedly prestigious scientific organization, finding this out from the emails, pitching him on his ass. Doubtless, nobody in this supposedly prestigious scientific organization ever bothered to read the emails. Ignorance is bliss.
The “Team,” a little band of egotistical nerds pathetically collecting undeserved awards and accolades, and constantly seeking new ones, reminds me of a relative who used to buy university degrees from diploma mills. When I told him they were fake, he had a fit, insisting that he’d paid good money for them, and, therefore, were legitimate.

In the light of these particular ClimateGate exposes, I’d like to figure the odds against a ‘contrarian’ ever getting his abstract accepted for an AGU session.

Thanks Philip. So one has to blend emails from both batches to get the full picture. These charlatans should be frogmarched into the public square for mass ridicule, but instead they just keep piling up more undeserved awards, and boasting of them. I’ve never encountered children this pretentious and self-absorbed. I wonder if the Team’s parents all have bumper stickers on their cars saying “My kid is a member of (fill in the blank).”
Here’s a good rule of thumb: Believing oneself to be brilliant, evolved, enlightened, special, important, generous, charitable, spiritual, beautiful, handsome, or the center of the Universe almost always denotes the opposite.

Do you mean fragrant or flagrant?
I’d not thought of Mann, Jones etc as fragrant – but then they DO seem to surface after ‘enquiries’ smelling of roses… : )

He actually, honestly, truly believes that his diploma mill doctorate (in something, I can’t remember what) is 100% authentic, and gets mad when people don’t address him as “Dr. So and So.” Many of America’s foremost this or that have diploma mill degrees. England’s notorious former Bantridge Forest School, under the alleged Sussex College of Technology, and Bantridge University (including one “branch” in Hawaii and six or seven others elsewhere) have “graduated” hundreds of CEOs, teachers, professors, executives of every stripe, and a zillion bible-thumping ministers–all of them wielding fake Ph.Ds. Who knows how many are in government positions around the world?
