Open Thread Weekend

This post serves two purposes.

1. A forum for open discussion in a civil manner

2. A test for Windows Live Writer to see how well it does for creating a blog post.

Since peer-review turned into pal-review, I think the need for more funds to study further, requires a new kind of review: Paypal-review.

From the ‘What is’ FAQ:
What is ‘lorem ipsum’?
‘Lorem ipsum’ is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. It has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s. It has been popularised ‘recently’ with desktop publishing software and in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing ‘lorem ipsum’ passages.

Nope Ed, the phony Boston Fed study and four decades of nobly mistaken housing policy have finally tripped over their own hubris, bringing the world down with them. Now, this madness of the crowd called CAGW has sucked all the rest of the capital into a great green hole in the ground with liars at the top.
But China is coming to its senses, and we got a ‘lection next year.

THE solar power revolution is in danger of stalling, with the State Government admitting the electricity grid is failing to cope with its green vision.
Energy Minister Stephen Robertson confirmed new applications for rooftop solar systems were being rejected in areas where Queensland’s high uptake threatened the safety and reliability of its network.
Thousands of homeowners hoping for promised power savings of up to $540 via a 1.5kW system are in limbo, with those wanting larger systems even being asked to pay more than $20,000 to help cover local upgrades.

In the Sunday Age today there’s an article saying that to achieve carbon reductions we need to turn vegan, and meat producers should be charged for the carbon their animals emit.
“Mahony cites a study by the Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency, which showed a transfer to a completely vegan diet would reduce climate change mitigation costs by about 80 per cent.”

At lunch today we were in a Korean restaurant and had shared “hot pot” (soup served on a deep Wok type dish with a small gas burner to keep it hot at the table). The gas burner had a label with some Korean and Chinese writing and in bold English it said “Solar Powered”, I had to laugh. I knew that the gas burner was not solar powered, because it was cheap and reliable …

It would seem he writes in a sort of bubble of “plausible deniability” that works to render a ‘free’ and exculpated conscience; he doesn’t actually know, with any degree of certainty, and can’t actually claim to know what he is penning progand..-er- slanted public interest stories, and since the goal is green energy, warm fuzzy bunnies and cute puppy dogs by the bushel basket, he has a high and noble goal as well.
Per wiki: “In politics and espionage, deniability refers to the ability of a “powerful player” or actor to avoid “blowback” by secretly arranging for an action to be taken on their behalf by a third party—ostensibly unconnected with the major player. In political campaigns, plausible deniability enables candidates to stay “clean” and denounce advertisements that use unethical approaches or innuendo based on opposition research.
More generally, “plausible deniability” can also apply to any act that leaves little or no evidence of wrongdoing or abuse.”
This also assures he can get a good night’s sleep, until his conscience at some point begins to gnaw at him …

Re the economy, a guy called Nuttle has an interesting concept, the “debt wall” ; meaning the moment when the collective deficits of the nations exceed the amount of capital available for the current low interest rates. When the debt wall is hit, interest rates must rise to attract capital which will make it necessary for the deficit-ridden nations to increase taxes or print money to pay the interest.
http://debtwall.org/the-nuttle-debt-wall/
So one or more of the following must happen in the deficit-ridden nations:
– Tax increases
– Austerity measures
– Devaluation of their own currency by printing money.
There’s no way around it. It’s the Keynesian endpoint.

If you’ve ever been labelled a climate change denier, you may like to read this piece by James Delingpole. I’m sure everyone has heard about the problems with Greek debt and the European single currency, well in Britain we are not known for our fond embrace of the great European experiment. Thankfully we did not adopt the Euro, Greece would pale into insignificance.
Back to climate change deniers, an editorial by the independent in 1992
“The spectacle is both nauseating and pathetic: nauseating because this heterogeneous rump of Thatcherites, little Englanders, xenophobes and eccentric constitutionalists appears to have no concept of loyalty; pathetic because they have no alternative agenda. In their conceit they are convinced they know better than the Government (and the Opposition) where this country’s true interests lie. But what vision do they substitute? Not, to be sure, of a perfidious Albion notorious for going back on treaties that it has signed; nor of a country whose outdated notions of sovereignty led either to Britain being marginalised in Europe, or to a historic undermining of the EC’s role as a bulwark against resurgent nationalism. Yet those are both likely outcomes. The Europhobes’ idea of the EC reverting to a mere Common Market is a naive anachronism”
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100106974/global-warming-the-guilty-men/
Andrew Marr, the independents political editor at the time is a former Political Editor at BBC News, now has his own show on Sunday morning. (Checkout wikipedia – “Marr has written about the need to remain impartial and “studiously neutral” whilst delivering news reports and “convey fact, and nothing more”)

Something interesting I’ve noticed about this hurricane season (see Weather Street for the graphs):
http://www.weatherstreet.com/hurricane/2011/Hurricane-Atlantic-2011.htm
This season, the number of named storms is closely tracking the high number reached in 2005, however, the number of hurricanes is way down … only three to date.

Something for electric vehicle lovers/haters/undecided:
Heathrow has a PRT (personal rail transport) system now; built by a Bristol University spinoff called Ultra PRT.
company website:
http://www.UltraPrt.Com
nicely rendered ad video by them:

use the youtube links to find videos of the real thing in operation at Heathrow.
It’s supposed to be much cheaper than conventional rail-based PRT’s like the
Vectus PRT

because the track is cheaper.
PRT’s are an old idea, as sketched here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ULTra_(rapid_transit)
and the idea goes back to the HUD reports; an old kinda pork scheme, born out of the need to find a new project after Apollo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HUD_reports
I’m neither particularly enthusiastic nor antagonistic about this; just wanted to share it.

What did Paul Krugman do to deserve a Nobel prize?

Well, here’s part of the issue, ‘Bucky’ – one involving terms and definitions and history who actually created ‘the prize’.
IOW, it ain’t [sic] the “Nobel Prize in Economics”, it’s the “Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel“.
Per wiki:
The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics,[1] is an award for outstanding contributions to the field of economics.[2] It is generally considered one of the most prestigious awards for that field.[3] The official name is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. …
It is not one of the Nobel Prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel in 1895, but is commonly identified with them. The Prize in Economics, as it is referred to by the Nobel Foundation, was established and endowed by Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank, during 1968 on the Bank’s 300th anniversary.

“The American ‘allergy’ to global warming: Why?
A deepening desire to disbelieve: Why US remains last redoubt of climate ‘denialism’

In the paper, Columbia University geoscientist Wally Broecker calculated how much carbon dioxide would accumulate in the atmosphere in the coming 35 years, and how temperatures consequently would rise. His numbers have proven almost dead-on correct. Meanwhile, other powerful evidence poured in over those decades, showing the “greenhouse effect” is real and is happening. And yet resistance to the idea among many in the U.S. appears to have hardened.
What’s going on?

Speaking of warming…. I just replaced my refrigerator’s defrost heater again. It’s a totally crappy design consisting of an UN-sealed coil of wire (Ni-Cr I assume) inside of a glass tube. Of course it just oxidizes and eventually dies in about 8 to 10 years. If I was just a wee bit more enthusiastic I’d figure out the wattage and replace it with a SS sheathed ceramic cartridge heater; maybe next time.
