24 Hours of Climate Reality: Gore-a-thon – Hour 5

A new post containing a cartoon from Josh will appear every hour. At the end of the 24 hours, everything will be collated on a single page. Readers are encouraged to post skeptical arguments below, as well as offer comments on what has been seen from the Climate Reality Project so far.

——-

Polar bears are being threatened. They need rescue from climate change!

Umm, no.

In fact, there’s so many polar bears in Canada Canada’s growing polar bear population ‘becoming a problem

And, the government scientist who sounded the alarm that Al Gore picked up on is in trouble for “making up” much of the issue from siting 3 drowned polar bears then extrapolating a population decline from that single observation:

Al Gore’s “drowned polar bear” AIT source under investigation

The polar bear poster that launched a thousand quips

The level of ridiculae surrounding the polar bear “plight” was kicked off by that master of disaster Al Gore, with his swimming, drowning, polar bear animated characterization in “An Inconvenient Truth”. See it below about halfway in.

Gore later added to that distortion by making use of this photo:

polar_bears480

Astute readers may recall seeing a photo flashed around the world earlier this year of polar bears “stranded” on an ice cube at sea. Please follow this link to the original photographer. See the bottom right photo.

A Canadian blogger, Carole Williams, tells the story behind this picture, which was taken in 2004 just off Alaska by a marine biologist on a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute project, Amanda Byrd.  As the marine biologist (Byrd) points out, the bears were in no danger so close to the coast (they can swim 30 miles).

She just wanted a photograph more of the “wind-sculpted ice” than of the bears. Byrd writes:

“[You] have to keep in mind that the bears aren’t in danger at all. It was, if you will, their playground for 15 minutes. You know what I mean? This is a perfect picture for climate change, in a way, because you have the impression they are in the middle of the ocean and they are going to die with a coke in their hands. But they were not that far from the coast, and it was possible for them to swim.”

The image was copied from the ships computer (where Byrd had downloaded the camera flash memory stick to) by another member of the shipboard research crew and passed on to Environment Canada. Then it was eagerly adopted by many as an example of the fate that awaits the polar bears – including Al Gore, who used the picture as huge projected backdrop in one of his highly lucrative lectures.

Gore said:

“Their habitat is melting,”  “beautiful animals, literally being forced off the planet.”

Audience: [gasp!]

Yes, it melts every summer.

Read all the details of the story behind the photo, here and here. It seems that a lawsuit is brewing and Canada has some pretty hefty copyright laws.

==================

Josh put a lot of work into these, so if you like the work, drop by the tip jar. Unlike Gore’s CRP, he won’t spam you asking for more. Buy him a beer, he’s worked a long time bringing us enjoyment with only some “attaboys” sent his way.

I would like to thank Josh and Anthony for providing new and interesting material for each hour. This is in stark contrast to the “Al Gore Variety Hour” which is repeating the same presentation hour after hour for 24 hours (just with different speakers).

Anthony;
With Al Gore trying to reach a lot of people with his internet debacle tonight I thought I might post two numbers of my own: 867,320 and 90%
I have posted this link quite a few times on comment boards (like yours) in response to someone indicating that the climate models are good or that there is no fraud in climate science. I wrote it on 28 November 2009 after I had a gone through all the code and data available in the ClimateGate FOIA file.
As of a few minutes ago the view counters on my “Anthropogenic Global Warming Virus Alert” indicate:
Since 28 Nov 2009: 867,320
Rating by readers 4.5 out of 5.0 (90% positive)
It is still getting hit daily. I never thought it could reach more than a few thousand people, I guess it caught on. I was (and still am) upset by the perversion of science exposed by the release of the information so I tried to use humor to communicate what I saw as the central message of the scandal.
They lie and they know that they lie, and now we know it too.
I will not be satisfied until all of the papers that directly or indirectly cite the fraudulent activities of the CRU have been withdrawn and buried.

PS. Much truth is spoken in jest.

I believe they are still issuing permits for 400-500 P bears to be taken by hunters annually . Despite all the bears that have been taken by hunters over the years, as Anthony points out above, there are still enough of them that they constitute a growing hazard to human populations in Canada. Hardly seems like the symptoms of a species that is in decline or threatened. Given the very large territories that individual bears lay claim to, has anyone ever calculated how large the population of bears can grow before we start to see increasing numbers of bears dying in battles over territory?

You know what the irony is the biggest threat to polar bear cubs is … polar bears .
These guys don’t play nice an adult male will kill and eat cubs if they get a chance .
So if you want save little cute polar bears from their biggest threat you know what you have to do.

“Siting 3 drowned polar bears”? Surely that should be ,”sighting 3 drowned polar bears”. if the scientist sited them, i.e. moved them from elsewhere to that place, he would have been a very naughty boy. I suggest a couple of corrections are in order, or the scientist concerned will have a legitimate gripe against WUWT

Speaking of Poley Bears, remember this?

Alarmist videos will (or should) go down in history as being some of the most offensive, as well as idiotic of all time. Unfortunately for them, they backfired.

“In fact, there’s there are so many polar bears in Canada…”
There, fixed it for you.
