With all of the serious questions about hype over Hurricane Irene and the media’s introspection and sanctimonious hand-wringing, I felt it was time for some levity.
If you do not remember Michelle Kosinkski from a Today Show appearance in 2006, you are in for a real treat.
Oh Brother.
From Milford, Maine:
Bwahahaha! I never saw that before!
Something like that should happen every time alarmists are filming a segment overhyping a flood, hurricane, blizzard, sandstorm, etc.!
This one from CNN Anderson Cooper, is the best for me.

That video should carry a warning. “Do not watch whilst eating”
Seriously funny.

“This one from CNN Anderson Cooper, is the best for me”
Good grief – that is almost Pythonesque!
Thanks for posting that one
@Mike Bromley the Kurd
Priceless:)
Wayne, NJ, is in the Passaic River basin. I’ve lived and worked up in that area, off and on, for much of my adult life, and given the character of the area – densely populated with high real estate values (and some of the highest property tax rates in the nation) – it has perhaps the most godawfully inadequate flood control planning I’ve ever seen.
Back in the late ’70s, I spent a couple of years living in the town of Lodi (on the Saddle River in that system), and the running joke was that after two days of heavy rain you could get in some fine fly-fishing on Main Street. Same thing today, and I’m not at all surprised.
Buncha goddam Mets fans up there, the mouth-breathing, slope-browed idiots.
Longstanding plans to develop definitive solutions to this hideous flooding have been floated, including a flood tunnel to channel the excess in this basin directly to Newark Bay.
Ah, but the ‘viros have treated this plan to the same old NIMBY/BANANA blockade as always. The Wiki-bloody-pedia article cited specifies that “the State and Federal governments [have been] preferring to buy out properties in the Passaic River Basin that are prone to flooding” instead of implementing the civil engineering capable of preventing these frequent massive destructions of private and public property.
Just how the hell much land can “the State and Federal governments” clear of human presence and return to howling wilderness?
Only the advocates of Agenda 21 seem to know for sure.
Well Anthony, it would see the MSM will spin every opportunity to dramatize events, however can that accusation be leveled at the various USA meteorological organization? Here in the UK with UKMO they seem to do a good enough job on their own. Most of it is driven by their AGW agenda plus the H&S madness approach that seems to be an issue on both sides of the Atlantic.
UKMO operate a warning system-hell we get ‘be aware’ warnings for rain. We all know about the forecast BBQ summers that UKMO felt obliged to witter on about due to their agenda, and how those forecast failed miserably. The last two winter here in the UK has seen the Met Office go absolutely potty with thousands of snow alert warnings when usually not much happens, Any stranger to Britain watching UKMO’s warnings of red alert for heavy snow would get a totally distorted picture of what actually happens, yes we had a very cold and snowy last December but nowhere near the extent you would believe if your only source of information had been UKMO.
So the media and in the UK the met office are equally guilty of ridiculous over the top warnings that are never borne out by reality.
So much communication and so many lies and no one seems to think it’s an issue bar a few, it seems we are living in an age of deceit.
I will always give Michele Kosinski a pass on whatever she does. She is smoking hot, does a good job and if it is not a serious topic she seems to have some fun while reporting. ABC News should hire her away from NBC to replace Daine Sawyer.
“Is your oar hitting ground, Michelle?”–Obviously someone has never been canoeing.
People did die, but I don’t count the two idiots in Florida who went surfing despite warnings. Idiocy killed them not Irere.
TomT: Yes, people did die. No hurrican or tropical storm can be ignored BUT (and this is a big but) there should be some proportion employed. This kind of coverage and hype is more usually reserved for a Cat 5 screaming into a Gulf Coast or S Atlantic seacoast storm – not one that they were getting hysterical about even as it lowered itself down to Cat 2 then Cat 1 and eventually into a TS. As usual, it was the follow on flooding that did (and continues to do) most of the damage, but covering that isn’t nearly as dramatic as standing in the wind. That video from Mike Brombley really sums up what the coverage of Irene looked like.
Oh BTW, more people will die in the next hurrican because of the over hyping of this one.
If you want facts and news, check the internet (you’ll have to work for it).
If you want infotainment, tune in to the nitwits for the latest noise and feel your brain slowly rot away.
But they did manage to get tens of thousands of people into camps in NYC based on alarmist forecasts.
Very dangerous situation.
people have drowned in waters that were less deep (LOL)
Even Matt Lauer had trouble holding his composure after that bit of video from the ‘field’!! (Look at the grin on his face there at the end!) One can hear the crew back in the studio yucking it up too … that was a classic. Thanks Ryan.
.
Unfortunately, the Journo schools keep pumping out these blow-dried, pouty-lipped, emoti-con airheads by the carload – and the networks keep recycling them as “new, fresh faces”
Back in the 60s, the college lightweights majored in Sociology. Today, it’s Journalism or Mass Communications or some other triffle.
99 out of 100 “weather” segments on the “news” are presented by a) an attractive woman in constrictive clothing, or b) a guy who is goofy and willing to debase himself in animal costumes. Neither has the slightest clue what they are reading off the teleprompter.
If I have offended anyone who actually knows some meterology and holds one of these weather-news-alarm jobs, I’m not apologizing until you tell me why you don’t have a real job outside the entertainment industry. Have you no pride? No shame?
Did you hear what else she (Katy Couric on NBC Today Show ‘Canoe video’) said right at the end?
Practically an admission that it was a put-up job that got busted. Shameless too.
That (Maine video) is a great spoof!
But, but, but…
All those picturesque covered bridges in Vermont, washed away.
Some were not even insured.
The horror.
