Personal note: reduced posting in the coming weeks

I’m going to be “on hiatus” perhaps a couple of weeks or more to catch up on my business, which needs some significant attention right now. Blogging, as most of you know, is a loss. Between my wife’s illness last fall, getting the surfacestations paper out this spring, and other time-sucking issues, I have a lot of catch-up to do. Blogging, while at times exciting and rewarding, doesn’t pay the bills. Ever since Amazon killed affiliate programs in California due to tax insanity, now blogging pays even less. Ad clicks and a few kind souls who drop into the tip jar are about it, yet I find myself spending 6 hours a day (or more) on some days. A good example was last Saturday, when I spent about 5 hours chasing Turtles down a rabbit hole in Australia.

This coming November, I will have been at this job for five years straight, with only a couple of short breaks. What started out as a interesting diversion for my local newspaper has turned into a global monster that needs daily feeding. So, time for a diet.

I’ll have one, maybe two, small posts on weekdays, maybe more on weekends, the rest can be filled in by regular contributors and those that use the “submit story” feature in the header.  It may turn out that “less is more”.

About submitting stories, many of the “submit story” offerings these days are simply reposts of articles on newspaper or magazine websites, which I’ll generally reject due to copyright issues and other reasons. The best way to submit a story like that is to paraphrase and excerpt it.

See Tips and Notes for those that don’t want to submit a small story.

WUWT has a life of its own now, and I don’t need to be as attentive as I have been. Climate Audit goes days without posts, and Steve still manages to maintain a pretty good traffic rank because people are always looking for the next post. I know people will step in to fill the void here.

Once I get caught up, I’ll spend more time here again. In the meantime, carry on.

Thanks for your consideration.

Anthony

July 14, 2011 12:42 am

Good luck with that. I know we regular readers and commenters will all feel that you deserve a break, I am not convinced that you will be able to stay away for long. Running this sort of blog as a sideline, hobby, or anything other than paid-employment (meaning you are not contractually obliged to turn up and do your 8 hours for a pay-check), without substantial remuneration requires one thing above all else: A deep and burning passion for the subject. Where such passion does not exist, even the best will in the world could keep one at a blog like this for 5 years. Where passion like that does exist, it makes it almost impossible to step back and slow down.
The next scandal will undoubtedly get you pounding your keyboard again giving the alarmist side hell.
So I say with absolute gratitude and sincerity, enjoy whatever time off from this you can grab, you do deserve it and I look forward to you returning to ‘full-time’ blogging again soon.

We’ll do our best to maintain the standard you have set here. I know from personal experience how running a blog can ‘take over’ and lead to other aspects of life being neglected. You are doing the right thing, take all the time you need.
I’m dropping twenty bucks in the tip jar as a small thankyou for your dedication to open science. I hope EVERYONE here will do the same, to help lift your spirits and provide a little seed money for the revitalisation of your business in these difficult economic days. (scroll to the button on the right under the climate widget).
Come on EVERYBODY, rally round and help get Anthony off to a flying start with the business he needs to take care of. The time is now.

Could only wish it really was a “break” for you, Anthony, and not just a mandatory surrender of time here to keep your life running. — your life, and the lives of your family and the lives of your employees.
You have already single-handedly begun to turn the stampeding mob; and present and future alike are in your debt. Sanity will return sooner because of you.

Enjoy yourself. At almost 83 million (82,846,000) hits on your blog shows the success of your efforts!
I myself need to slack off somewhat from the ‘compulsive lurking’ that WUWT and others have inspired in me. My research has been done and my mind comfortably decided on the issues related to the CAGW issue. I need to tame my ‘lurking’ from 12 – 14 hours per day to say 5 – 6 hours (cold turkey?). I’m not sure that I can do it. A vast wealth of knowledge doesn’t pay the bills but it sure helps to set some others straight and keep my investments away from at least some of the hucksters!
Thanks again for bringing soooo much to the table!

To all of Anthony’s loyal readers:
Everytime I open WUWT I click on an ad. I usually pick one of the greenie or carbon trading ads because, as I understand it, with every ad click, a tiny amount of their money moves to WUWT. If everyone did that, Anthony might find his hard work is a little more profitable.

Anthony – I have little scientific learning so I rely heavily on the ongoing efforts yourself, your fellow contributors together with the admirable honest reasoning of other bloggers, such as Steve Mc and Judith C, to throw light on, what is fast becoming a global warming nightmare. Your output has been inspirational and my hope is that, after a well deserved break, you will feel able to resume your place as a learned guardian of what is good scientific practice.
May I suggest that the idea of a “tip box” seems inadequate considering the service that you are performing on our behalf? Perhaps, an appeal for the annual funding you need would be better as is done by sites such as Media Lens? I feel sure support would be considerable and would form a just reward for your marked input to public debate.
In the meanwhile, “best wishes” to you and your family
Many thanks…

we’ll miss you. try to take a real online break this time tho. the website will flourish in the meantime because it has developed a kind of life of its own. pity it isn’t bringing in the cash it deserves, but that’s the bizarre nature of the free market where we’re told access to numbers is critical for advertisers, but it doesn’t work out that way in reality. shame/

They say a change is as good as a rest, but I’d like to see you take an actual rest from all your labors and call it a Vacation–summertime is the ideal time to do it, of course. It should include a trip along the coast, or a fishing trip or two, or fine dining with your wife, or something as simple as kicking around home with the computer off and the barbecue on. Thanks for all you do, Mr. Watts, but by all means kick back and enjoy the (non-catastrophic) weather in N. California.
Sorry that you live in the once-magnificent state of California. I lived there once too, several decades ago. Relatives still living there tell me it’s getting time to move on to a more sane location but then who would remain to counter the insanity? It’s a tough choice.

we know you have been inordinately active. My sense is that the past 20 months have been the turnaround phase in the climate struggle for sound science. Many others, not the least S. McIntyre, have also been downshifting their activity, and talented others (shub, tallbloke, etc)have assumed new, more active roles.
The new status has been paved before. And adjustments are called for, of course. THANK YOU!

I have a lot of respect for people who run small businesses, and imagine doing so in California must be a unique challenge. (You do notify your customers whether or not your software causes cancer, right?)
One of your few failures is following through on previous announcements that you need to take care of the business – Hey CTM, can you take Anthony’s password away from him?
Everyone else – see that cute temperature logger down at the bottom of the right hand column? You need one of those! BTW, I needed a model that recorded temperature so I could check the supercaps in my weather station, Anthony’s staff went beyond a special order for me to adding it to the product list. If you need something that tracks 0-30 VDC, it’s a cool device.
This is a good time to let WUWT coast for a bit. While the media and Gov’t science haven’t gotten the word, general public has. WUWT has a lot of momentum, it’s not stopping anytime soon. Heck, we’re not changing direction anytime soon.
And … Have you considered calling up Jeff Id to tell him it’s time for his “retirement” to end? Tell him you have a whole new logo designed for “Watts Up, With Id”. 🙂

You deserve all the R&R you can get. I am amazed you can spend less than 5-6 hours a day on this blog, for the quality that is produced. As many here are working folks, I suggest to you and others Anthony, to find out what a real vacation is. I took a week or two a year, thinking I was getting relaxed. In my forties, I retired from an engineering career, married and moved across the state. Waiting for the house at the new location, we decided to take a month in Mexico. I found each week to be more relaxed, and I could only identify the loss of tension by its absence, thinking each layer was the last. At three weeks, I started to think I was bored, but realized that I had actually finally really relaxed for the first time in decades. Do it for yourself and family! I didn’t say, but we had no cell phone, internet, TV, newspapers, etc.

I remember at one time that Global Warming Skeptics blog and forum I now own.Was getting more traffic than here.I helped you by posting some of your early entries. We knew of each other then.

Thanks Anthony. You know, you can make the ginchiest boat out of a piece of fence board and a rubber band. You cut the front in a point, like a boat, and you cut a little rectangle out of the rear. Then you cut the little rectangle piece just a little smaller, and you remount it in it’s hole with the rubber band wrapped around the little prongs that are left. You wind up that piece of wood on your rubberband holder and set that boat in your kiddie pool (or bath tub) and wow, it really works. We spent hours trying to decide if it ran better when we wound it backwards or forwards. And yeah, you can put your plastic figurines on there, yeeehaw!
Summertime, and the livin’ is easy….sound of pounding feet – DAD! Gotta love it.

I’m glad you’re not going completely. I’m also glad, in a way, that there will be less blogging. You have become addictive and a bit less is more will let me down gently although I can still get a fix every so often. One of Christopher Booker’s articles first put me on to you and having helped fight off a wind turbine farm locally before finding you and wondering if we were the only people in the world fighting this madness, it has been a great comfort to find so many like-minded people. The battle against the Climate Change Act in the UK is not over and with the current crop of politicians one wonders if it ever will be, but at least you have helped an enormous amount in providing data and information to try to counter the so-called concensus. With other people coming in to help out on WUWT, I am sure we will still see useful information being handed on. You are a good man; thank you.

Thank you Anthony for all your effort over the years. You surely deserve a break and let’s face it, you have to eat which means pay attention to business. I would encourage people to help out by submitting stories or articles. This is no time to let up, the global warming industry is continuing to press their case. I understand Anthony’s need to take a break, but I disagree with Dave Worley-the job is not nearly done at all. Al Gore will be starting a new propaganda effort this fall and at some point in the future if Democrats get more control of the government you’re going to see carbon taxes and cap and trade ideas brought back to the fore. We need to help keep this site going so that it shows up in searches, how else will those in the general public on the fence get a skeptical point of view?

Keep the business humming. Until someone finds out a good way to make money on blogs, you will be stuck with the standard methods of ads and such.
On another note, if you did up the ads, I wouldn’t be upset…or possibly also offered more merchandise. I know Josh has some excellent things, but if you offered a wider variety including lots of almost strictly WUWT cheap advertising, it might help get the word out so to speak.
I know I would have no problems wearing a new cool graphic that shamelessly promotes WUWT. – Feel free to work with Josh, I know I am by no means against his work, I have I think 4 t-shirt and a couple coffee mugs myself.
Although I will admit some of them probably got burnt, I did send t-shirt to some warmist relatives last Christmas and I am sure they ended up being burnt…but it was worth it for the imagination I had of thier facial expressions on receiving such a gift (-:

Anthony
All my thanks and gratitude for all that you have done for us all over the years. Not only has this site has been an invaluable source of information and a forum for discussion, but you personally, by your openness and equanimity and by just being the genuinely decent man that you are, have provided a prime exemplar of how a site like this should be run. Would that just a few of your critics had absorbed that example. I find your estimate of 6 hours/day to be hopelessly optimistic and probably closer to a best case than an average. My visits here have always been rather randomly distributed throughout the hours of the day and mostly at odd hours, and given the large percent of the visits which featured a recent post or comment response from you, I’ve often been tempted to enquire what is was you were taking that allowed you to maintain such a seemingly man-killing schedule.
You certainly deserve any break you chose to take. If you have commented on the status of your wife’s recovery lately I’ve managed to miss it, but I would add my hope that her prognosis has continued to improve and that you and she are still in my prayers. The work you have accomplished in building this site to its current status has been incredibly important and I feel privileged to have been able to spend time with you here. But in the end this to shall pass, hopefully by the need for this site being greatly reduced by the demise of climate alarmism, but, if not, your your familial obligations deserve to be your priority. Advice I offered in comments more than 2 years ago and still just as valid. If you should decide to never author another syllable here your contributions would still merit more gratitude than I or any of us could ever hope to adequately put in words. Good Luck and Godspeed.

Anthony, you have the best, most informative site on the web.

I am embarrased to say that I did not know there was a tip jar and have failed to show my appreciation that way. Sorry that a pittance is all I can manage right now [only half my crop planted this year and more than a third drowned out last.] I hope others will also take note of this avenue of showing thanks and make a special effort to do so.

Saludos, Anthony. May your time away from WUWT be highly profitable – in the financial/business sense. Be assured that the time you have spent at WUWT has also been spent very profitably – in the educational sense. I do fully understand the need to do both, and thanks immensely for the knowledge and insights I have gained as a direct result of your own work and your loyal and productive associates who are also instrumental in making WUWT a daily must-visit web site. I am certain that this will continue in your absence but look forward to your return in any case.
I’m embarrassed that it has taken so long, but I finally did hit your tip jar. There’s a c-note coming your way with my deepest thanks.

Do what you must Anthony. Us and the real science will be here.
At least you have the dignity of not being paid with your fellow citizen’s tax dollars to blog disinformation, policized pseudo-science and fear, like Gavin Schmidt does at the un-RC blog.

I would suggest the only time you concern yourself in the next little while with melting ice is when contemplating a gin and tonic on the deck.

Anthony – regardless of our scuffles, I do very much appreciate this site and the great effort you have put into building it up to what it is now, inspired by your dedication. I wish I could give more, if I ever win the lottery..
Is there any way you can produce some books out of the discussions here? I particularly enjoy the exchanges in science subjects I know little or nothing about, but also there’s so much material to the background in the AGW scam – as in the current ‘give this lady an Order of Australia medal and previous discussions about the EPA and California – and how these affect the people directly. I’d really like to see such going to a wider audience. Not heavy tomes, perhaps something lightened up by Josh..? Magazine format maybe.
Anyway, do enjoy a break with your family, and as always, I’ll look forward to the next item you and your guest posters have found of interest for us.

Do back away, ensure business success and personal life.
You’ve posted many articles recently, spending time digging is too much.
Best wishes.

I think I should pull myself together and push that “Submit Story” button soon. I have a fascinating story (more like a review article) in the making, for quite some time now. It is about sea level budget. If you add up all the widely advertised scary contributions (like melting glaciers & ice sheets, ground water depletion and the like, with plenty of peer reviewed references from prestigious [AGW] journals), it turns out ocean volume below 700 m is contracting and it is contracting fast. It means ocean heat content is not increasing, but decreasing, that is, there is cooling, not warming in the pipeline. Either that or some scary “consensus” papers are crap. No model is needed, just a bit of simple physics.

Where else on this planet can you get the equivalent of a university education for an occasional $20 in the tip jar. I stand in awe of you, sir. Well done.
