From the “weather is not climate” department…
Apparently, Nature is weighing in some support for action in Sacramento to end California’s economically punishing anti-carbon law. We saw earlier this winter some significant snowfall in Los Angeles, but Hollywierd continues to suffer the cold shoulder and chill wind of nature even as spring is well underway.
Today the National Weather Service issued the following advisory, cautioning potential snowfall in LA county in the Antelope Valley and Santa Barbara, with snow accumulations of up to 4-7 inches possible:

Alert:
…A COLD LATE SEASON STORM WILL BRING SNOW TO THE MOUNTAINS AND PORTIONS OF THE ANTELOPE VALLEY…
.AN UNSEASONABLY COLD UPPER LOW OVER CENTRAL CALIFORNIA EARLY THIS MORNING WILL TRACK SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. WHILE MOISTURE WITH THIS SYSTEM IS SOMEWHAT LIMITED…THE ATMOSPHERE WILL BECOME UNSTABLE DUE TO THE EXTREMELY COLD AIR ALOFT. THIS SHOULD ALLOW FOR NUMEROUS SHOWERS TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND THE ANTELOPE VALLEY LATER THIS MORNING AND THIS AFTERNOON…CONTINUING THROUGH THIS EVENING. THERE WILL ALSO BE A SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS…SOME OF WHICH MAY PRODUCE SMALL HAIL. SNOW LEVELS WILL RANGE FROM 2500 TO 3000 FEET…WHICH WOULD BRING ACCUMULATING SNOW INTO THE HIGHER PORTIONS OF THE ANTELOPE VALLEY…PARTICULARLY IN THE FOOTHILLS. SNOW WILL LIKELY IMPACT TRAVEL ON INTERSTATE 5 OVER THE GRAPEVINE… PORTIONS OF HIGHWAY 14 BETWEEN THE SANTA CLARITA VALLEY AND THE ANTELOPE VALLEY…HIGHWAY 33 IN VENTURA AND EASTERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES…AND PORTIONS OF HIGHWAY 138 IN THE ANTELOPE VALLEY.

I have a great idea, let’s have our next convention in Cancun….
….it can’t get us there /snark
Having lived in Newport Beach, CA, my favorite memories are of floating with my body board off the peninsula and looking back at the San Gabriel Mountains covered with snow in March. It is a little late in April, but it’s not the first time, nor the last that snow visits SoCal in April.
There are some fine pictures taken from several of the piers along the coast, showing beautiful waves and wonderful snow covered hills and mountains. If it weren’t for the CA problems, I’d say that as far as weather goes, you can have it all in SoCal.
Meanwhile up here in the Sierra it was 6F at my house last night.
And today’s paper says our current snowpack is #4, behind….04-05, 05-06, and 82-83, with the largest snowfall on record. with plenty more snow on the way!
Spring keeps coming earlier, and earlier….
Chains or snows over the grapevine?? Been there, done that. Long, long ago, before the climate was changing. It must be changing, when there’s snow over the grapevine these days. Fort Tejon is a wonderful place to chain up. If you get that far.
In L.A. in the mid 1980’s there was an April day with temperatures over 100. On that day, Hollyweird was the hottest place on Earth, hotter than the Sahara Desert or Death Valley.
And now, snow.
/sarc: total proff of global cooling, this one event.
Likley Al Gore is around. Worse than we thought.
Is Al Gore in LA?

Look people, this is actually proof that mankind is warming the planet, what we have here is a severe instance of a WarmCold front coupled with a strong WetDry system. This weather event is completely consistent with our very robust models that have predicted extreme cold weather events due to the warming atmosphere, along with above average moisture in areas that will dry up and blow away very soon.
We regret that people the world over are being harmed by these extreme weather events, and we reiterate that all of these disasters have been caused by the West in general and the sceptic camp in particular for not giving up all of their freedoms and their cash to save the planet.

In contrast England is basking in a ‘summer type’ heatwave.
Nature does not like Gore…
But as usual, the blaming GB wagon will come along.
It was in the 80s here in the High Deserts on Monday, and its only 45 today with the threat of snow.
Off topic but this Delingpole blog is worth looking at:

“In contrast England is basking in a ‘summer type’ heatwave.”
Well, it was 20C yesterday in Gloucestershire and 18C today, with beautiful sunshine. Wouldn’t count as a heatwave in June or July, but it still beats the pants off last December. Colder by Tuesday I think.
Rich.
Spring? What spring? Where?
It’s been a such a ‘fun’ winter that last night the deer came right up to the house for a hearty midnight snack, munching on all the tender shoots of green from the bulbs in the flower beds. Everything else is still the desolate brown of winter — kinda hard to start turning green when it keeps on snowing like it did the other day. Wonder if we’ll be getting a pretend summer this year.
I won’t feel so bad that there ws ice on my vehicle’s windshield twice this week, waaay to the north in Victoria BC.
😉
Meanwhile, the Baltic is frozen solid. ‘This past winter has been particularly harsh, allowing [ice roads] to stay open for longer than usual.’

When will the weather service stop using ALL CAPITAL letters?
Nothing about this on the BBC but they are running yet another scaremongering story about how rising sea levels may drown New York according to new computer simulations.
Nice to know the BBC has a handle on what might happen rather than what is happening isnt it? Although if sea levels start to level off or even start falling then al the computer simulations the BBC has thrown at us over the years are going to look awfully silly.
“potential snowfall in LA county in the Antelope Valley and Santa Barbara”
The portion of Santa Barbara County in question is Highway 33 near Pine Mountain Ridge. That’s nowhere near the city of Santa Barbara. The summit is 5,160′, so snow is common.
What was the weather like in CA about this time about 206 years ago?

Isn’t this the result of the arctic ice caps melting?

As a life long resident of LA City, I know that snow is normal in the mountains of Los Angeles County, even in spring.
Mt. Waterman ski resort goes back to 1939. Mt Pinos is a favorite for cross-country skiing, and it had an alpine ski resort in the ’60s. Both are in LA County. Snow is nothing new here.
We had snow here several times last April (see LA Times 4/12/2010 and 4/29/2010), hitting the Grapevine and Antelope Valley.
In 1957, Fresno (a little north of LA County but not in the mountains) got 1.75 inch hail in May. In 1960, Perris (in the flat lands east of LA County) had 2.75 inch hail in September. In 1966, Barstow (in the desert northeast of LA County), there was three-quarter inch hail in May. Shall I go on?

What does that mean in London? Eighty degrees Fahrenheit? What about York? Sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit? When does the sun sit in York today? Three in the afternoon? Did you know that with the exception of Alaska, Americans never see the sun as low in the sky as it was today in York? Let’s not even talk Edinburgh. Brits have to travel abroad to experience sunshine or summer.
Is it possible to contact A Watts by email? Re: there is an urgent need to have a link to UHA aqua satellite + the other satellite data graph real time (not the actual AMSU site graphs). I presume the data can be converted to a simple temps versus time from 1979 to today. The warmists do not like it at all.
As CA is cold, the highly amplified upper air pattern will bring a good chance for 70s ot near 80 and dewpoints near 60F all the way north to Minneapolis this weekend with the threat of tornadoes. Gonna be an exciting one potentially. Oh, and the last vestiges of parking lot snow piles are finally just about gone after the 5th snowiest winter on record with a near record amount of days with over 4″ on the ground. But the grass is now greening, the trees are budding. Sorry Oregon!
Re previous there is a link on WUWT which is

But its completely missing current AMSU data. The current data -0.4C complete changes that plot if you get my gist. It must be real time with AMSU (well at least a day old)
And here we have a pretty scary picture but normal of what is coming.

Here are our local condition at Cypress Mountain, Vancouver. The site of last year’s Olympics. You can see we have had 119 cm (4 feet) of fresh snow in the past week. Total snowfall for the year 1319 cm (43 feet). Snow depth at mid mountain 628 cm (21 feet).
That’s right, we have 21 feet of snow mid mountain, 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, in April. Sunburns all around after a great day on the slopes.
If this is what we can expect from Global Warming, it has my vote. BRING IT ON!!

Meanwhile, in the Arctic, the Catlin survey team seem to be having to spend a lot of time digging through the ice to get to the water to sample it (http://www.catlinarcticsurvey.com/2011/04/01/creating-sampling-holes/).
Trawling through their website has so far failed to locate any references to open water which so hampered their previous trips.
Viewing the 2007/2011 side by side comparison of Arctic ice cover (http://home.comcast.net/~ewerme/wuwt/cryo_compare.jpg) suggests that ice is far more concentrated this year with a fairly sharp gradient at the edges, leading me to expect that the total ice extent will decline much more slowly this year. Of particular note is Hudson bay, which was late in icing over at the start of the season, and seems to be similarly tardy in melting this Spring.
As to the warmth in the UK, the met office, through the BBC weather reports, are so emboldened by their new supercomputer that they have confidently predicted a barbecue ……. wait for it …… weekend!!

Interesting indeed – new upwelling? A double-dip La Nina?
More snow is as a result of a warmer climate. Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past. Reduced snow extent is a sign of global warming. Increased snow extent is a sign of global warming. Less snowfall must be a sign of a cooler climate? My head hurts! R. Gates, where are you?
I suspect that the last few years has reduced the extent of news stories related to Spring coming earlier and earlier. ;O)

Douglas, me too. We had three inches the other day.
My grandmother would not plant a single garden seed or row of onion sets until after May 7th. On May 1st she would roll out the paper towels (or kitchen flour sacks if someone had used up the paper towels), dampen them, and place the seeds carefully in rows. Then she would roll up the paper towels and place them in an old glass restaurant-size mayo jar and screw on the lid. Come May 8th, she would gingerly plant the softened seeds into the garden rows. Why did this wise woman do such a thing? She understood weather pattern variation. This planting method smoothed out the vagaries of such variations and allowed her to overcome both wet/dry, and warm/cold AGW, without even knowing such a thing existed.
Were she alive today, she would have thrown a dishpan full of ice cold water on the bloviating Al Gore, stuck a wet bar of soap in his mouth, and then send him to the corner chair to contemplate his lye and tallow contrition. After an hour of that, she would have driven him to the local priest for an on-the-knees confession. To make matters worse, Father Quigley understood weather pattern variation and its affects on steelhead, salmon, and trout runs. Needless to say, Al would have had several Our Fathers and Hail Marys to get through before allowed off his knees.
The California legislature has a track record for going to extremes. Look for an added climate tax on snow tires and collision insurance.

Yes, we started noticing this yesterday, its not just you. This appears to be a new tactic of the warmists, to tag all skeptic articles shared on FB as abusive. We encourage all of our readers to share our articles on FB and to file appeals with each submission. When Anthony gets back we’ll see about a more permanent solution, but it is important that everybody get on the warpath with shares and appeals on Facebook.

That is not surprising. See the site below. It shows the Northern Hemisphere snow cover at about 1.5% higher than the recent 15 year average as of April 1. And as we know, whenever there is a blanket of snow on the ground, it is very hard for any surface temperature to get too much above freezing, generally speaking. And for the same reason, I will predict that at least for April, the rate of loss of Arctic sea ice will be slower than normal.

Regarding the Facebook “abusive site” problem: I am going to start making a point of flagging alarmist pages and sites as abusive. As the latest tactic is an attempt to gag open discussion (childish in the extreme), it should be even-handed.
