The Oxburgh panel also did not look at CRU’s controversial work on the IPPC which is what has attracted most [serious] allegations. Russell did not investigate the deletion of e-mails. We are now left after three investigations without a clear understanding of whether or not the CRU science is compromised.” |

One aspect of the term “denier” in its association with the Holocaust is the indirect reference to a real poison gas Zyklon B.
Every time a warmer gets to elicit subliminal memories of poison gases by use of the “D” word a psychological point has been scored in what is not a game but war-by-other-means. Not only are the horrors of the ovens recalled but alliance of the “denier” with Naziism is implied, as well as suggesting profound societal disapproval and possibly threat of sanctions under the law.
Psychological technique to stymie dissent and create fear (check realclimate’s banner) is stock in trade with the warmers, which makes Mr. Stringer’s stand all the more courageous. Bravo Mr. Graham Stringer.

As I recall, he has never pulled any punches when he sees wrong doing and is from the breed of politicians that is not afraid to say what he believes to be right… Sadly a dying breed in the UK and their replacements are nothing but overpaid yes (wo)men.

In Australia, the Prime Minister has just addressed the National Press Club about Federal responses to the floods in Eastern States. There is going to be a levy on those earning over $50,000 a year, to raise about 1.8 billion of a toal cost extimated at some 5.6 billion. But most interestingly, there are going to be cancellations or deferrals of a number of initiatives already commenced or commencing. These are mainly in the form of subsidies and they are taking a swipe at green things, like subsidies for electric cars, carbon capture and storage, domestic solar panels, I think from memory geothermal, plus a few other research proposals in similar vein.
There is a bit of commonality with the US President’s speech to the nation. However, our PM is still sticking to a price on carbon, so she’s not into the home turn yet. In a few months we will have greens with the balance of power in the Senate and they might well use this to cause her speech to be a swan song, though she talks like a duck.
We skeptics take climate seriously, we just do it real-ly.

I don’t care how anyone else looks at it, but the lack of “climate” issues in the state of the union, especially considering the source, is a momentous occasion. It is a signal of retreat.

I’m not so sure the lack of talk of climate signals a true retreat, even with Browner unseated. It’s more likely a head fake to create complacency…..to facilitate a sneak attack.
If they were truly in retreat, they’d call off the EPA Rottweilers.

Anyway its a mixed bag – in the short run the tax will penalise the economy and will reduce spending by higher earners at a time the economy needs a short post-flood boost (very short term need).
Cancellation of useless subsidies is a move in the right direction.
However I gather she still intends to tax CO2 emissions if she can get that through parliament.
King of Cool – i think you missed the point – the proposed tax surcharge is to help pay for flood mitigation – the cost is beyond what state governments and local councils can afford and many home and businesse owners are unsured and have lost everything (house business premises – the lot).
The commonwaelth budget is in deficit, so the extra spending has to be paid for – the alternative of going further into hock would be quite manageable but political ideology by both government and opposition parties makes that unnecessarily difficult.
The proposed tax levy itself, is not intended to be an anti CO2 move.

I do not agree with Mr Stringer’s politics but I certainly agree with his science understanding and his assessment.

John Howard’s government ran a tight ship and got you a surplus, so Australians voted for Kevin Rudd to spend it. Same as in Britain. We put Conservatives in to do the nasty things necessary to get us on our feet and get some money, then we vote in Labour to spend it all and ruin the economy, then we vote Conservative to…….. It’s been going on all my not-particularly-short life.
With no mention of climate change by President Obama in his speech, let’s hope that the British Prime Minister will take a lead from the President and stop all this silly nonsense about global warming, climate change, green issues, etc., etc., and get on with running the country and dealing with the real issues of which we in Britain have many. It is time for those in authority in all countries to put the ‘green’ pressure groups where they belong – at the very bottom of the pile – and stop pandering to their every whim and cause which these irresponsible groups attach themselves to. The British government should take President Obama’s lead and drop AGW from their agenda. If they do then other countries like Australia will quickly see the light, and the world will then be rid of some of the most expensive scams ever which would by now have been be perpetrated on mankind were it not for the the scam being exposed by the many sceptic scientists and enlightened websites like WUWT.

you’re right about the ease of hiding big issue and large sums of money but it is still a switch of major proportion for O not to mention the “climate crusade”.

Just cleaned 2 feet of man made global warming evidence from my driveway. Fourth big storm of the winter here in Connecticut. Seems like the snow this season and winter 09-10 are a great deal like the snow I used to see when I lived in New Hampshire. Looks like it is almost time to adapt again by moving south. More evidence of global warming and man made climate change is expected next week. This is not the mild winter that we like in Connecticut with just enough snow to say we live in New England. The question is where to put the next snow falls.
Would just like to add that Graham Stringer is, unusally for a UK MP, a graduate scientist. He has a BSc with honours in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, where the Chemistry Faculty has had an excellent reputation for quality science for many years.

Global cooling is another threat but I’m afraid the solution is the same. Save all the fossil carbons and stop burning them now. When cooling threatens touch them all off to get that CO2 level up.
As a Kiwi of UK extraction who grew up as a proud Briton before the Brits decided they needed to be part of the Common Market more than they needed Kiwis, Aussies, Canuks, etc back in the 1960s, I have been quite dismayed by the lack of honesty of UK politicians I have observed since my temporary relocation to London almost a decade ago. I never thought I would see members of the House of Commons or the House of Lords jailed for crimes of dishonesty against those institutions, but even that has occured very recently.
Mr Stringer is the courageous exception – his proposed ammendment quoted above will ensure he goes down in history as a shining example of a truly honest and intelligent politician. The shame is that three other politicians voted that honest amendment into what they obviously hoped would be oblivion.
If a curious mind seeks to understand what the SOTU speech implied, the online Washington Examiner this week has run a multi-segment ‘follow the money trail’ of the Democratic party. The CEO of GE as jobs czar replaced the energy czar; look at GE’s investments, and political donations. Nothing has changed; it’s just semantics for reelection. Green crony capitalism with taxpayer (oops – I mean borrowed money) subsidies.

Green energy is not going to work, an obvious observation I know, as without federal subsidies no solar panels or windmills.These systems never generate power when its dark(except in Spain) and freezingly still( like minus 30)As this magical thinking is going to cost us taxpayers way too much, we shall have to get the concept of retributive justice into the public debate. If persons in control of tax dollars spend foolishly,[ example clean green energy] and as a result we find ourselves freezing in the dark. Let it be known now that the fools will pay back the waste by their own physical effort by running on a human hampster wheel until they generate the missing kilowatts, every time the clean green machines fail to deliver.
