Whoo hoo!
Not as good as winning the lottery, but the chances were quite a bit better too. 🙂
Now off to the Sacramento Zoo for pajama day and free admission! Merry Christmas everyone!

And a Merry Christmas to you and yours, Anthony, and as always, thanks for allowing my posts to reach a wider audience.

Win a wheelbarrow full of carbon credits fresh from Chicago.
I was the lucky winner a year ago on the contest to give some funny line pertaining to Obama when he saw the massive cold blizzard caused by warming when he returned from Copenhagen. Still waiting for the prize.

Does he get a prize? If so, what is it?
A WUWT keychain or coffee mug?

Congratulations, all!
# 500,000 was an interesting post, demonstrating that there is genuine scientific discourse/push & shove on the comment section, unlike certain other climate-related blogs that involved Koolaid-drinking, hero-worship etc.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and cheers, Charles the DrPH! Here’s the NORAD Santa Tracker, I hope Santa’s reindeer are not sensitive to the effects of the lack of sunspots at present!!

To Anthony, moderators and all who write herein, thank you for hosting a site where sanity and science prevail! Dissent and skepticism exists here and that is good! Some of the science and math is over my head (I’m a lowly instrumentation and controls guy!) but I manage to struggle through and learn much from even the most opaque posts! What is missing (although I would sure like to see what gets snipped!) are the acrimonious adolescents inhabiting the “real” science blogs which shall remain unnamed, however, the initials CP do come to mind. Even the trolls over here are generally more respectful! By definition, a true scientist is a skeptic: I’m in good company! As a redneck clinger, a longneck salute to y’all! (clink)
Read this somewhere (if here I apologize; ’tis the mind what fails first!)
Four stages of life:
You believe in Santa Claus.
You don’t believe in Santa Claus.
You are Santa Claus.
You look like Santa Claus.
As one who has made the fourth category, a Merry Christmas to All and to All a Good Night! And a Happy New Year!

Henry Chance, I missed the winning caption for Obama’s return in the snow. Do you remember the line?
Congrats to Brian H.

500,000 – a milestone. Congrats to all, esp. to Anthony and the mods and all the various and sundry posters and a Merry Christmas to all from Tejas (where we’re receiving some much-needed rain in the DFW area!)

I’m jouleous, but congrats Brian H! And congrats and Merry Christmas to Anthony, and all here – posters, mods, and commenters. Onward and upwards! We have the scoundrels and scaliwags on the run now. But yeah, the climate war is not yet over.

I’m taking a break from beating eggs and other ingredients into submission (I’m a bit out of practice with the cookery). Congratulations, Brian H, for making the 500,000th comment an intelligent one.
I want to wish you all – Anthony, Mods, Willis and other excellent contributors and commenters here – a Merry, Merry Christmas and best wishes for health and happiness in the New Year. Thanks to all of you for the wit and fun (as well as the ongoing science education) that keep me returning. I often find myself thinking: “I wish I had said that!”

OMG The ice is at a record low …
… for the past 9 years, at this moment in time. Perhaps they’re right. The cold Arctic is causing warming and the ice is melting …
…in December? Yeah, right! I can assure everyone that it is not above zero anywhere above the Arctic circle at present. So, the ice isn’t melting, but what is a-happening? I know (hand up in air – please miss?) it all went down to Europe, America and China.
I suspect winds and ocean currents.

Robert of Ottawa says: “OMG The ice is at a record low … for the past 9 years, at this moment in time. …the ice isn’t melting, but what is a-happening? …I suspect winds and ocean currents.”
Arctic ice extent is geographically constrained from about November through December. Ya has ta look at the map to see why. It doesn’t vary as much for those months as it does for the rest of the year. And, yes, it’s also been borrowing heat from the rest of the NH via winds and/or ocean currents. Note the spike in the DMI “Mean Temperature above 80°N” graph.

Congrats Brian H… come on… come out and take a bow! ☺
That’s a great comment and you are right, there is no net energy simply do to the movement. For every up there is an equal down, no net work. That water molecule took additional energy to move it up to the cloud base but it all returns due to eventual fall. Winds the same horizontally with changes in it’s kinetic energy. ( That delta potential/kinetic energy has nothing to do with the latent heat energy that Willis was speaking of. )

Whuff! Quite a surprise. I didn’t even do a back of the forearm calc of the odds.
But I’m certainly going to treasure all the swag! How soon can I expect the mug and T-shirt etc., Anthony? Where do I email my shipping address? “Christmas time is here, by golly! …” *
*1 point for the first to identify the source.
wayne;
my question is more general. Energy was expended on a pure horizontal change of location. The center of gravity of the Earth was shifted. When and where does that show up as an item in the “heat budget”?

Merry Christmas
Happy new year
And a quote from Charles MacKay in the Madness of Crowds – “it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one”.
Let’s hope 2011 is the year that sanity returns, but not too slowly.

Congrats to Anthony, his family and team. Now lets go for the millionth. Blimey, if the AGW scam falls through completely, and the UN sacks pachauri and Obama becomes a sceptic or even a denier, then WUWTS will lose its raison d’etre and then it would be a very long and tedious march towards the millionth comment. But then there’s still hope that Trenberth would still be looking for the missing heat at 50,000 leagues under the sea. Captain Nemo would be very ready to help him out.
A belated Happy Christmas to Anthony, family, team,WUWT contributers and readers.
I have learned a lot of science here. THANKS A LOT.
