On Suzuki: "celebrity and integrity seem to be mutually exclusive"

From the Canadian Newspaper:

An inconvenient letter to the editor, from a “green librarian” no less.  h/t to Kate at SDA.

David Suzuki disappointing

To The Editor:

On Saturday, Nov. 20 I went to see David Suzuki speak in Moncton at the Green Home Builder’s Show. I was hoping to ask him during the question period that normally follows these types of talks for advice on how to help me promote environmentalism to my group of largely apathetic students at Hampton High School, where I am the librarian.

Unfortunately, there was no question period. Directly following Dr. Suzuki’s speech, where he emphatically urged the audience to form strong interpersonal connections with their neighbours, family and local ecology, there was a book signing. I waited until the line was gone before I approached. I did not purchase any books, since I either have them at home, or have read them through our public library service. There was only one other man at the table, talking about a Prius, and he stopped and said he should go since I was waiting. Dr. Suzuki said it was alright since there was “no one there.”

I assumed since he was 75, perhaps his eyesight was poor and he did not see me. When the man left, I approached Dr. Suzuki.

He looked up and said, “book?” I said I didn’t have one but I wanted to ask him a question. He said, “I don’t have time for that,” and waved me away like a king dismissing a commoner.

There was absolutely no one else around the table except the security guards.

Then he shouted out, “Books! Books!” and continued waving me out of the way. There was no sign indicating no questions were allowed.

Only minutes before he had been espousing the value of slowing down and making time for each other and he didn’t even have the decency to say, “I’m sorry, I’m tired . . . or I’m not allowed to answer questions . . .”

Instead here I was, an educator and great promoter of his books, looking for help with the generation he claimed was most important, but because I was not spending money (other than the $45 I spent to hear him lecture), I was waved off.

I used to be proud to call Dr. Suzuki one of my heroes, and now I can see that he is a hypocrite.

I am in no way turned off the environmental causes I have always believed in, simply disappointed to have to tell my students, once again, that celebrity and integrity seem to be mutually exclusive.

Jenn Carson,

Hampton

Let’s also recall that the chairman of the Suzuki Foundation is Hoggan the author of desmogblog the racist hatemongering blog that attacks scientists. Suzuki is infiltrating municipalities with his activists being elected as councillors and then forming committtee with “concerned citizens” that in fact are Suzuki activists. This way in British Columbia where these are based, they can push their green agenda through the back door almost stealth despite the greens making only 8% of the vote at the last election. This is Bolchevik tactics… beware.

The Green celebrities we have learned to know by their “science”, their e-mails, their deeds and their discussions are no nice people. Most of them really hate humanity and want to see the majority of the people rather dead than alive.
Why should David Suzuki be any different?

There is a wider issue here other than poor Jenn’s naivety; and that is how can the concept of AGW be taken seriously when everyone spruiking it is a liar, conniver, obfuscator, hypocrite, oddball, spiv, oportunist etc; in fact as a challenge is there one leading AGW supporter that you would, to use an Australian colloquism, urinate on if they were on fire?
The other side of the equation is the supporter; many of them seem to have genuine environmental concerns and noone denies there are genuine pollution issues and the wider issue of how humanity should interact with the environment needs to be discussed but collectively it is the doltishness, self-indulgence, laziness and out and out stupidity of the AGW supporters which has allowed the rotten behaviour, egregious modis operandi and absence of standards and accountability of the people who are running AGW, like Suzuki, to go unchecked for so long.
I have no sympathy for Jenn; and in fact I would love to hear her despair when the lights go out after green measures to ‘cure’ AGW stop the electricity from flowing; that is, if I wasn’t freezing and starving in the dark as well.

Suzuki is as strident of a green as it gets (in other words, not objective) but his weekly show in Canada has been running a really great series called “Geologic Journey” which is now into series II and it is completely free of global warming/green non-objectivity – it is a detailed examination of the geologic history of Earth and is worthwhile viewing for anyone (lets say that is really) interested in this area (might not be for others).
Part II series can be watched here in HD (a couple of commercials first):

It was David Suzuki who turned me into a skeptic. I saw him in a TV interview when he was asked whether solar cycles might not account for global warming. When he dismissed the question with a huff without even a word of response I knew he wasn’t a scientist. I decided that it was time to learn what the real science was.

It’s probably unusual for him to receive questions from “friendlies” – they tend to simply lap up what he says. So he probably concluded, with that ineffable grasp of logic common to all Believers, that any question must axiomatically be hostile. How sad.

Haven’t cared for the man since the early ’80s when his anti-human agenda was coming through loud and clear in The Nature of Things. When he started following me on Twitter a year or so ago, I wrote to explain why I Probably Didn’t Like Him.

David Suzuki is kind of like Canada’s answer to Ralph Nader, only he’s an environmentalist. His qualifications are in genetics, but he’s strayed far away from his scientific origins, and has become Canada’s primary green spokesperson and supposed environmental activist.
Last winter he and his organization tried to bamboozle Canadians and visitors into believing that the warm weather that marred the winter Olympics was due to global warming, whereas all denizens of WUWT know it was a strong El Nino. He has absolutely no integrity, but is lionized by an uncritical Canadian public.

OT: That bit on Steve McIntyre in Tim Ball’s latest Free Press is a tad over the top… not his finest in my opinion.
“Steve McIntyre provided valuable evidence of the corruption in climate science when he identified the misuse of data and statistics in the graph dubbed “the hockey stick.” He refuses to say the errors and actions taken by Michael Mann and his associates were deliberate despite overwhelming evidence. He distances himself from those more forceful in identifying their actions as deliberate.
He claims, “CA (Climate Audit) readers know that I express myself carefully and try to make my opinions as narrow and precise as possible.”
The problem is when he had opportunities to speak out, even in a narrow way he failed. At the hearing chaired by Congressman Joe Barton of Texas, he was upstaged by Mann. It’s reasonable to consider errors genuine or a result of ignorance. However, the consideration must include all the factors involved. How many errors are necessary before a pattern emerges? If the person was unaware of the error, it means they are incompetent anyway? Fortunately, in reporting to Barton’s Committee the Wegman Committee showed more gumption. They identified the scientific errors and the social dynamics of the small group who controlled publications and the peer review process of climate science. Now Wegman is under attack accused of plagiarism in the ongoing effort to personally discredit anyone who identifies the criminality of Mann’s actions and those who were associated with him. Climategate exists because of the corruption.”

Just about a year ago David Suzuki ranted epic, in the linked videos, after Copenhagen fell apart due to Climategate. It’s an amazing rant full of presuppositions that really shows how committed greens disconnected from the facts think they are thinking. What is really amazing is that Suzuki is a biologist so he should know better that plants will soak up the essential plant nutrient CO2 to grow faster and bigger as they do in commercial greenhouses.
http://pathstoknowledge.net/2009/12/17/david-suzuki-rants-epic-on-global-warming-and-copenhagen
Contrast David Suzuki’s ranting emotional performance with the knife slices of poetic critical reasoning that comes from the mind of Rex Murphy as he analyzes the the fiasco revealed by Climategate.
http://pathstoknowledge.net/2009/12/04/climate-science-needs-a-reset-button
What a refreshing difference. It’s amazing that the CBC has both of these guys on the air. Rex Murphy gives us a glimmer of hope that objective journalism isn’t dead.

ahhh…the ‘Hamptons’… Now THAT was the ‘clincher’ that finally made sense.
She’s a disillusioned librarian…(probably ’cause the kids can’t read?) yet, she remains stalwart! …she’ll firmly hold on to her illusions as she and her neighbors trudge into eco-doom and gloom simply ’cause it’s fashionable…while her former hero ‘bites the dust’. (But, then again – wasn’t that HER problem for being a bad judge of character before assigning hero-status?) Best try to channel John Dewey about that one, Honey.
But, rather than search her out and burst even MORE of her eco-bubbles ~ I’ll be ‘good’ ’cause it IS Thanksgiving and share gratefully with you guys that notoriety/celebrity is NOT mutually exclusive with those (normal mature) humans who ‘have a clue’. *We either have a ‘better than’ mentality or we don’t – plain an’ simple.
I do wonder, however – if this babe couldda just offered that Mr. Sus/z her arm so that he’d autograph it, and then he could’ve been happy and she’d still be able to feel ‘politically correct in innocent ignorance’ and allow all the other bubbles being made in this world to burst – instead of hers.
Ahhh…BUT (she muses) what CO2 would’ve been actually generated by the arm-writing process??? Well…….of course, that DEPENDS. (NO! It doesn’t depend on the way I feel one a certain day – at a certain time!!!)
The CO2 would be LESS – significantly less, in fact, it were a ‘Bic Biro’ pen rather than a magic marker…which is called a textacolour in Australia…Now I wonder if changing the name of something reduces CO2??? Oh, SURE! I’ve studied it for YEARS!!! (Send cash for my research to….)
You want to actually SEE the data before you send me cash??? Oh, certainly!!! Just give me a moment… I’ve got all the relevant data to prove it! Don’t you trust me??? Are you……..A RACIST??? It’s somewhere around here…….. Awww… you guys could just TRUST ME to have that data stored correctly… Oh Yeah! I remember! I put the data in the glove box of my hired limo that’s idling for an hour just outside of this room! I’ll be right back… Hey. I was already sceptical of the AGW thing, as I am of anything being rammed down my throat by the media, but it was that incident that solidified it for me. Here was a man that many Canadians grew to admire and trust as a scientist being extremely unscientific to a simple question that had merit and deserved a rational response. His response was anything but rational and I haven’t trusted a word out of his mouth since. As a Canadian, I am embarassed by Dr. Suzuki, he is a hypocrite of the highest order. One of the most important things that you have to teach to your students, and sons and daughters, is the following:
WHATEVER YOU READ, SEE OR HEAR, CHECK IT OUT. Don’t believe it outright because CNN said it, or I said. 99% of all the things said are incentivised by money. A journalist is paid for publishng a report, an editor too, the more they sell the more money they make. Hence the more interesting or bad the news is, the higher probability that it is snake oil. This holds also true for (pseudo) scientific reports, published by paid public-servant scientists, who would lose their pay check if there is nothing to discover or say. Publicly-funded scientists are none better than journalists. Both will lose their job if they don’t publish.
As for me, I have learned this by experience. I’m fed up of hearing:
Oil will be finished by 1970…80….90…………..
We are entering an Ice Age
We are all gonna burn due to global warming…………
We are all gonna drown from oceans rising……..
Antarctica melting
Mobile phones cause cancer
Bird flu
Swine flu
Ocean acidification
Lack of food
But the surprise of my life is that I will soon die of…………..old age.

Books – “Blue Planet in Green Shackles”, by Czech President Vaclav Klaus has a good reputation (though I’ve never had a chance to read it).
Ian Plimer’s “Heaven and Earth – the Missing Science” is an excellent read – a bit dry at times, but full of interesting facts and references. Got the skeptics into a frothing frenzy, which is a good sign.

Jenn,
stop worrying about AGW. It’s just the latest manipulation of government by fear. We have bigger problems.
What you and your peer group now need to worry about is the dissolution of democracy. All the global warming hype is a smoke screen to occupy the minds of a generation while they take us back to a globalised version of the middle ages.
Our children will not hate us for climate they will hate us for doing nothing as democracy was taken away.
If you want to “save the planet” you need to ask from what it needs saving.
Without democracy your ecological concerns (that I do not deride) will be IRRELEVANT.

Jenn, I feel for you that you were badly and rudely treated by someone you regarded as an icon; it’s always tough when the scales fall from one’s eyes as the result of a bad experience. And as you use the term ‘icon’, I am led to assume that you have, perhaps unknowingly, allowed enviromentalism to become a part of your belief sytem. In the light of your experience with Suzuki, perhaps it’s a good time for you to re-examine that faith and read the books that the posters above have suggested. Anything that purports to be based on science cannot be a matter of either faith or consensus.
I wish you all the best as you seek enlightenment.

*********************************************
I have to say that I agree with Tim Ball……
Regardless of Steve McIntyre’s considerable strengths when analysing data, he completely fails to deliver the real message whenever he has the opportunity to do so in front of a TV camera, or, it would seem, a public audience.
He also steers clear of stating what is obvious to committed skeptics (like me), but which requires much stronger emphasis to the waverers (like my wife), that fraud and misinformation has taken over the CAGW agenda.
The CAGW loonies continually ram their fraudulent message home and unless the truth is rammed home, with the same strength and frequency, most of the world will just keep on accepting the lies of these nutters.

David Suzuki has called for political leaders to be thrown in jail for ignoring the science behind climate change.
At a Montreal conference last Thursday, the prominent scientist, broadcaster and Order of Canada recipient exhorted a packed house of 600 to hold politicians legally accountable for what he called an intergenerational crime. Though a spokesman said yesterday the call for imprisonment was not meant to be taken literally, Dr. Suzuki reportedly made similar remarks in an address at the University of Toronto last month.

Japanese-Canadian Dr. Suzuki didn’t literally mean to say prison. He meant to say they should be placed in internment camps until the war on carbon dioxide has ended.
My irony meter exploded just now.

I believe Prof Carter is working on making his books easily available to teachers.

It is an excellent book and easy to read, with many referees applauding the book.

There are a few principles that apply to anyone, anything, anytime and anywhere that can be of great value…
If you want what others have then you must do what they do. (You wanna be rich? then get smart with money! ever heard of dumb money? noooo, only smart money! Want to be an elite althete? I see they spend a lot of time down the gym, and fussing over their food, that’d be a start)
Repeating the same behaiviour and expecting a different outcome is nuts. (Sitting their, repeatedly, hitting the “enter” key wont make the error message go away)
Want to know what the future holds? Then look at history.
And the one that fits Suzuki?…
Don’t lsten to what people say. Watch what they do! Words don’t have consequences, actions do!

If I might take a minute to put in a word for Jenn. Those of you who deride her environmentalism have failed to ask one thing. “What environmental causes does she care about?” Being an environmentalist covers a wide range of subjects, including but not exclusively clean water, clean air, good land use practices, etc. So before you put her down for her environmentalism, at least take the time to learn what it is she cares about. It’s a part of integrity and courtesy. Thank you.

Hadn’t she realised that it’s all about the money? No book purchase, no interest. If we can stop the unending flow of money into CAGW proponents then they will lose interest in that too. It would be an interesting study if for, lets say 3 years, the only grants available were for research into the counter veiw. How many would find”new evidence” to support the natural cycle veiw.

Witness his continued appearance on the CBC (that pick pocketing media conglomerate that denies access requests) and as the face for Ontario’s (lack of) plan for electricity (just use less, pay twice as much, and don’t whine about the rent seekers rushing in for the exorbitant rates offered for solar, wind, etc.). I have encountered this scientific charlatan many times in the last few decades. I once tried to inform him about energy matters that he clearly knew little about, and he told me that I would never be able to change his mind on anything once he had made it up. Some scientist! In his response, he sent me an autographed photo, which I immediately consigned to my round file, in disgust. He also speaks of being able to see the future with ‘absolute clarity’. This man is no scientist. He is, as the teacher said, a total hypocrite who tells others what to do, while he does little of it himself. He relies entirely upon ad hominem attacks – as I am doing now, but unlike him, with some evidence to back it up. Another member of his immediate family also phoned me at home many years ago to lambast me for an article I wrote on Hiroshima, Nagasaki. She knew nothing about it, but argued until I hung up. The last survivor who was in both bombings died earlier this year; an extremely old man. Hormesis anyone?

The complaint about Suzuki’s behavior is not impressive. That could have been due to many reasons. The disturbing thing is how he is combining his science and ideological extremism into a political force that is undermining Canadian civil life.
That is much more in line with his calls for criminalization of political disagreement with is climate extremism.

Over time, I posted a number of tidbits about David Suzuki in my web pages about the Suzuki-fired hype and hysteria about global warming.
It is too bad that Jenn Carson had to make her distasteful experience with David Suzuki, but that she did so is nothing out of the ordinary. Consider this:
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Suzuki walks out of AM640 after global warming debate
AM640 Toronto Radio
Feb, 15 2007 – 3:20 PM
[Caution: The web pages at the two links shown in the following quote are a bit slow to load, as they are now only accessible in the Internet Archives.]
TORONTO – Turns out noted environmental activist Dr David Suzuki isn’t as mild mannered as you may have thought. He stormed out of our studios this morning after a debate with host John Oakley over the merits of the Kyoto Accord. Suzuki says whether the Harper government agrees or not, Canada is already on board with the plan. Oakley says he welcomes all voices in the debate. Suzuki countered by asking if he’d welcome a creationist to chat about evolution. (Full Article)
In that interview Suzuki claimed that global warming “nay-sayers” are “shilling” for “the fossil-fuel industry”, and that his foundation is funded by private individuals. The truth is quite different.
Suzuki also claimed in that interview that 2,500 scientists signed the IPCC “report”. However, the “report” was actually signed by only 51 individuals (not all of them scientists). Moreover, the “report” referred to by Suzuki is a summary of the IPCC report. The IPCC report that it summarizes has not yet been published and is scheduled for publication in July of this year. Is that perhaps to provide enough time to make its conclusions fit the IPCC “summary” – a political statement – that has been in the news for the last little while? (Check: Global warming charlatan)

Wikipedia has a telling point on Suzuki — if true (and I have no reason to believe otherwise).

Early in his research career he studied genetics, using the popular model organism Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). To be able to use his initials in naming any new genes he found, he studied Drosophila temperature-sensitive phenotypes (DTS).

David Suzuki
It’s always struck me as an interesting contrast that David T. Suzuki, who has an ego the size of British Columbia, has the same last name and initials as D. T. Suzuki, the Zen writer who promotes an ego-free life.

I’m not having much sympathy for Jenn Carson after reading this: “I was hoping to ask him during the question period that normally follows these types of talks for advice on how to help me promote environmentalism to my group of largely apathetic students at Hampton High School, where I am the librarian.”
Ms. Carson, why are you “promoting” anything other than a love of reading in your public high school? I don’t care if you are interested only in reasonable environmental issues and not full blown AGW, you’re still overstepping your bounds as an educator by injecting personal interests into the classroom/library.

David Suzuki stopped thinking a long time ago and opted for the promotion, finding that it just makes more money. He has done quite well for himself, but for those who like to think a bit he is just too flat.
On the great Wesdtern Canadian drought about 5 years ago, he could only respond with “Duh” on the “why” question. (global warming of course). That was immediately the last year of drought, with nothing but wet and “normal” years since..
He also loves the alertness of the wild deer as compared to the rather dull and slow moving domesticated cattle. Wild being better than domesticated; “see how alert the deer are?” Better for whom? The deer are alert because they are being hunted continuously, every hour could be their last, with the feeding frenzy generally beginning before they are completely dead, starting at the soft spot under their tail. Anybody will be a nervous wreck if that is your life. At least for the dull cattle life is good for a little while and they generally don’t know what will hit them.
But that is Suziki for you.
By the way, Plimer’s book is not that good. Full of errors and poor referencing; a bit political and at times trying to be smarter than he is. I agree with a lot of the criticisms directed at him. He can do very well by taking all the free comments, edit his book and bring out a much improved second edition. He just wrote it too fast and had only supporters doing the fact checking; luckily the agw crowd did him a favour and pointed out all the weaknesses.

“I was hoping to ask him during the question period that normally follows these types of talks for advice on how to help me promote environmentalism to my group of largely apathetic students at Hampton High School, where I am the librarian.”
Did they run out of the little red buttons? There’s nothing like blood and guts splattering all over your apathetic students to motivate them.

What a refreshing difference. It’s amazing that the CBC has both of these guys on the air. Rex Murphy gives us a glimmer of hope that objective journalism isn’t dead.
Rex was subsequently fired from the CBC for that report on climategate. He now writes for the National Post.

I went to Anthony Watts lecture in Australia.
After the lecture I approached him – I just wanted to say hello and how I enjoy reading WUWT regularly.
Anthony was most charming. He was genuinely pleased to have me and others just saying hi, and was happy to answer questions from other people.
Perhaps go to one of Anthony’s presentations, Ms Carson. I am sure he will make your feel welcome. And his message makes more sense than Suzuki’s.

Your like or dislike of my tone is irrelevant. Being too soft to call a duck a duck (especially when it walks like one and talks like one) is not taking the high road. He had plenty o’ evidence to at least convince someone to make these guys open the books. Sorry.

For our Hoser friends [I use the term with affection], this Canadian blog has a weekly update on climate issues.
Click on “Weekly Roundup” for news items like this, eh?

Speaking of hypocrites I suppose it wouldn’t shock anyone to know that Dr Suzuki was caught poaching in a fish preserve in BC after one of his productions.

I grew up in Moncton and it is so good to see her returned to reality. It is also poetic that it happened in Moncton(Monckton) 🙂
We have a cake eater here in Fredericton that espouses the foolish drivel from Al Gore so I hope ever so much that he also is introduced to his eye opening moment soon too.

I imagine you have many cake eaters in Fredericton. I grew up there – wonder if I know him or her?

This is a two minute video on a favorite topic of Suzuki, salmon farming. Just look at the reaction of the audience at the rant about the toxins, this spiel was given after they had eaten the salmon !
He actually signed a book for me and my daughter many years ago, doing so, without comment, I really wanted him to comment on Theodore Roszak (mentioned in one of his publications) but got no reply.
Not the friendliest of authors, but then again, there is so little time to save the planet. He seems to display an intolerance common to know-it-all eco- warriors. In a lecture at the ANU that I attended, he called the 1990’s, “The turnaround decade”.
Well David, we didn’t and we are still here, a little more informed than you seem to be.

To understand Suzuki you must understand his childhood. He and his family were sent to internment camps in WW II. That left him with a huge subconscious chip on his shoulder, and sometimes his carefully concealed rage leaks out. His current mission is just a handy way to vent. For example:
“Update: February 10, 2008: Canadian Environmentalist David Suzuki Calls for skeptical leaders to be thrown ‘into jail’ – Excerpt: At a Montreal conference last Thursday, the prominent scientist, broadcaster and Order of Canada recipient exhorted a packed house of 600 to hold politicians legally accountable for what he called an intergenerational crime. […] “What I would challenge you to do is to put a lot of effort into trying to see whether there’s a legal way of throwing our so-called leaders into jail because what they’re doing is a criminal act,” said Dr. Suzuki, a former board member of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. “It’s an intergenerational crime in the face of all the knowledge and science from over 20 years.”
(Sorry, lost the link to this but it is a well known incident.)
In person his sailor-like foul language reveals what lurks beneath his facade.
It is also worth noting that the CBC gave him his soapbox at the same time as the Canadian government was a Maurice Strong puppet.
Only in Canada, or at the UN, could this raging and manipulative sociopath be a member of any “(Canadian) Civil Liberties Association.”

If Pat’s still following, I hope her library has Prof Lance Endersbee’s “Voyage of Discovery”. It’s not about climate change/scepticism per se, but the wider evolution and falabilty of scientific knowledge and ideas. Published by the author (deceased) you can order it online from Abbey’s Bookshop Sydney NSW.

Pat… apologies for replying so late in the game, but try your own home-grown Robert Carter, who has opened my eyes to the science of climate, especially with his book, “Climate; the Counter Consensus”.
BTW, are you having trouble with utilising your upper case keyboard button, except for acronyms? Naughty librarian!

thanx for all the book suggestions folks. perhaps jenn could stock up on some of them as well.
Engchamp (note the capitalisation!) –
i’m not a librarian. it is the local library which covers a wide region and a large and growing population that is willing to stock the books. the use of lower case is a habit, good or bad, that i’ve adopted for online use.
btw i did get christian gerondeau’s “Climate: The Great Delusion” from the library recently and – for those like me without a scientific education – it made a lot of sense.
