Quote of the Week – David Suzuki, a farce of nature

Tagging this one was a tough choice between “Quote of the Week” and “Climate Craziness of the Week”. Quote won.

qotw_cropped

September 27, 2010: Dr. David Suzuki, co-founder of the environmental activist group, The David Suzuki Foundation, is now touring Canada promoting his new book, “The Legacy – An elder’s Vision for our Sustainable Future”. The speech he gave this evening in Ottawa at the Dominion Chalmers Church was essentially a summary of the book, with much of the book’s text used verbatim in the presentation.

Get a load of what he says about humanity’s role in the forces of nature:

“We have become a force of nature … Not long ago, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, drought, forest fires, even earthquakes and volcanic explosions were accepted as “natural disasters or “acts of God.”  But now, we have joined God, powerful enough to influence these events.”

If Mr. Suzuki thinks we’ve become a race of “God like beings”, able to influence hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, drought, forest fires, even earthquakes and volcanic explosions, next we’ll probably hear things like this:

Read the full story here at the ICSC

=========================================

Addendum – some points about things we can’t influence and/or have been disproven:

Tornados and global warming link – “just not there”

Increasing tornadoes or better information gathering?

Going Down: Death Rates Due to Extreme Weather Events

WMO: “. . . we cannot at this time conclusively identify anthropogenic signals in past tropical cyclone data.”

Global Warming = more hurricanes | Still not happening

Increased hurricanes to global warming link: blown away

Influence earthquakes? – no link needed, we can’t even predict them yet, much less influence them.

Influence volcanic explosions? – yeah right. Go argue with Mt. Saint Helens. Some people did, decided to stay, and paid with their lives.

Floods? – Think Corp of Engineers and dikes that failed during Katrina or any number of floods on the Mississippi river, such as in 1993

Forest Fires? – Yeah, we sure were able to control the one in Yellowstone in 1988, though I’ll admit it was worsened by poor management practices.

Drought ? – Australia’s “worst drought in 1000 years” now fixed by nature.

David Suzuki is the [snip] of environmentalists. He is worshipped in Canada by the brainwashed multitudes that soak up his mindless rants. Like most despots he doesn’t debate, he pronounces. And the national broadcaster fronts this charlatan as a leading “scientist” when in truth he gave up science in his early twenties for a career in the media.

Until recently, I had never heard of him. Why does he call himself an elder? Which (first) nation is he a member of, if he can call himself an elder? What is his prominence in society? I had never even heard of his foundation before this.
Why does he think he is important?

If we could influence these things we would not be allowing them to cause billions of pounds worth of damage would we?
We have as much impact on hurricanes, volcanoes and earthquakes as a fly has on the velocity of a car when it hits the windscreen at 70 mph.

Anthony, I think you are misinterpreting Suzuki’s metaphor. He is not suggesting that any given person has risen to the level of a god. He is saying that our species (our collective 6 billion individuals) has become a dominant force on this planet. We have become a force of nature in a way that we never have been in the past.
REPLY: Oh I understood what he said, individually or collectively, we sure as heck can’t influence a volcano or earthquake one iota. Ditto for the others. Anytime nature throws us a curveball, we are pretty much flyspecks on an elephant’s butt in our ability to influence it. Our best flood control measures fail, our forest fire control measures fail. Links of “climate change” to hurricanes and tornado frequency has been disproven time and again. No, what he’s saying is pure hubris based on an incomplete and biased understanding of reality. – Anthony

If Mr. Suzuki thinks we’ve become a race of “God like beings”, able to influence hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, drought, forest fires, even earthquakes and volcanic explosions,

Well to be fair, we can influence many of these events.
We can create drought by cutting down forests.
We can create forest fires with a box of matches.
We can create floods by damming rivers. We can create *minor* earthquakes doing the same thing.
We can take a small volcano erupting in a place far, far away of which we know little, and can pronounce even less, and by panicking like school girls around a spider, turn it into a disaster.
However equating kicking trigger points until they react, with joining God is stretching it too far. That’s like equating the first caveman to pick up a rock, with Death – the destroyer of worlds.

29 Sept: Reuters: Al Gore-chaired fund sells Camco Intl 20 pct stake
A sustainable investment fund chaired by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore sold a roughly 20 percent share in carbon offset aggregator Camco International (CAMIN.L) this week, a regulatory filing showed.
The statement, filed late on Tuesday, said Generation Investment Management LLP offloaded all of its 34.5 million shares, representing 19.6 percent of the firm, as of Monday’s market close.
Officials at Generation IM could not be immediately reached for comment.
Camco develops clean energy projects in developing countries under the Kyoto Protocol’s carbon finance schemes.
The shares were probably sold to Khazanah Nasional, a Malaysian government investment arm that has formed a joint venture with Camco to develop projects in Southeast Asia. [ID:nLDE68Q0CD]…..

Seriously just challenge him to stop an earthquake ( or even better PREDICT one).

David Suzuki is a legend in his own mind who thinks politicians that disagree with him should be jailed. He has been on the CBC forever being payed by extorted tax dollars to tell us how bad we are. He does the same things Gore does by telling us we need to cut back but at last count he has 5 homes and 5 kids. Go figure. He has a genetics degree but hasn’t written a paper in decades and claims to be our Canadian climate profit, ooops sorry, prophet. He made a series of commercials showing him breaking into houses and caulking windows and convincing beer bellied morons to get rid of their old fridges so they could afford more beer. Google him and you will find lots of information. Also you can check out http://dailybayonet.com/ for lots on Suzuki and lots of climate madness snark. (i am not connected with this site but it is great for a laugh as it pokes fun at Gore, Suzuki, etal).

“We have become a force of nature”
So, we are an agent of the natural world.
“But now, we have joined God”
I thought we where an agent of nature?
Ok, let us call nature and God the same thing; for the purpose of your diatribe (I suspect that they might be different).
“powerful enough to influence these events”
Sort of like angels then, we are the muscle (Walls of Jericho), the hit men (Sodom & Gomorra); that implement the boss’s (God or nature) orders.
So we are angels in the service of nature; that we are one with nature and that we are doing the bidding of God.
Wow, it is better than we thought.

Never before has man had such an influence!
http://www.physorg.com/news193847219.html
“This is arguably the first detectable influence of humans on the environment going back 13,400 years to when humans first got to the continent,” said Smith. “I think that it’s intriguing because there are a lot of ramifications. Potentially, if the decrease in methane, which is synchronous with this ice spell, was actually the cause, then humans contributed to the Younger Dryas cold episode.”
And never before before has man had such an influence, I mean! Or something like that. But yeah, we are GODS! Now, can someone part the Red Sea for me?

What I wonder when watching someone like David Suzuki rant on as he does (like on the CBC interview linked in my above comment) is what on Earth is their actual belief system that has them freak out over what essentially amounts to nothing as far as I can tell? What are they thinking? Really, they think it’s the end of the world as we know it? I just don’t get it. I try to comprehend what they are saying, heck I’ve spend years learning about the topic (with it’s literally hundreds if not thousands of technical points and sub topics) but so far nothing that convinces me that their fears have any basis in the objective reality of Nature that is our common ground. In fact excellent studies by people like Girma Orssengo clearly show no change in the temperature signal for the last 130 years even though CO2 has risen since the ~1950’s (or is it 1960’s). So in fact I’ve found the opposite… which brings me back to, how can they be freaking out? Especially someone trained in science? It bewilders me.

David Suzuki is a little strange with his logic. I like him when he’s talking about the environment. But when he starts talking about how humans affect the environment, he’s a little sketchy. I remember watching him give an interview on a commercial jetliner. He was talking about how he flew all over the place when planes produce pollution. His view that the work he was doing and the fact that the plane would be flying whether or not he was on it warranted a little leeway. Or something to that effect. That the good of informing the public was worth a little pollution (CO2, his words, not mine). And no, I did not mistaken Al Gore for Suzuki.
Another time, I saw him talking about humanity’s place in the eco-system. He said he never realized that humans are also part of the whole system. That we are part of nature just like all other animals. Really? He never thought about it this way before? This was a long time ago. But it looks like he’s started looking at humanity as an external entity yet again. It’s hard to pinpoint his true views when it comes to humans.
He has no problem using commercial facilities that produce CO2 and taking government money if it means getting the message out. That outweighs all other concerns, AGW included. He’s been like this long before Gore became known.

David Suzuki has said “Education has failed in a very serious way to convey the most important lesson science can teach: skepticism”.
If so, then he himself is an excellent example of said failure. His environmentalism isn’t grounded in science, but in a powerful Belief system more akin to a religion. It seems incredible that anyone would take his utterances seriously, yet I suppose he has his fellow faithful travelers.

pwl says @4:17 “ . . . how can they be freaking out?”
Your comment leads me to believe you are unfamiliar with pathological science and practitioners of the CAGW type. Here is a start:
http://www.fact-index.com/p/pa/pathological_science.html
Pathological science designates a psychological process in which a scientist, originally conforming to scientific method, unconsciously veers from that method, and begins a pathological process of wishful data interpretation. Criteria for pathological science are:
The maximum effect that is observed is produced by a causative agent of barely detectable intensity, and the magnitude of the effect is substantially independent of the intensity of the cause.
The effect is of a magnitude that remains close to the limit of detectability, or many measurements are necessary because of the very low statistical significance of the results.
There are claims of great accuracy.
Fantastic theories contrary to experience are suggested.
Criticisms are met by ad hoc excuses thought up on the spur of the moment.
The ratio of supporters to critics rises and then falls gradually to oblivion.

Sadly, I don’t think David Suzuki’s opinion would be much at variance from my friend’s. When Tim Flannery and David Suzuki can attract such wealth and prestige with their clownish mix of pseudoscience and Gaia worship…who’d be a Steve McIntyre?

I went through a road blockade that David Suzuki was participating in which was against clear-cut logging. The protest was set up at an area that had been completely burned to the ground by an intense forest fire (not by logging but it made a great backdrop) (and the area had been replanted by the logging company). Years later, the leaders of the protest organization became the owners of the same logging company.

I feel sorry for David Suzuki. Several decades ago I actually liked him and he is actually a likable guy. He used to produce some very non-controversial science programs that I thought were quite engaging. I remember one he did about normal skin flora that was spot on. He did another about human culture that I found quite interesting. He is of Japanese extraction and he explained that you could drop him in the middle of Tokyo and without saying a word the natives would “know” he wasn’t truly “Japanese”. I could appreciate this immediately. Although I am of tall, blond haired, blue eyed “northern European” extraction with a classic Dutch last name, if I were dropped in the middle of Amsterdam without saying a word the locals would instinctively make me for an American. He was on to something.
Then he got weirded out with AGW and he hasn’t been the same. So long to science. He’s little more than a freakin’ activist and now all but gone from American TV. It’s really too bad because I always thought he was a great communicator.

“David Suzuki has called for political leaders to be thrown in jail for ignoring the science behind climate change.
At a Montreal conference last Thursday, the prominent scientist, broadcaster and Order of Canada recipient exhorted a packed house of 600 to hold politicians legally accountable for what he called an intergenerational crime. Though a spokesman said yesterday the call for imprisonment was not meant to be taken literally, Dr. Suzuki reportedly made similar remarks in an address at the University of Toronto last month.”

Sorry, having trouble finding the link to the speech he made back in the 70’s to ubc saying the same thing then as now, but about the new Ice Age. Soon as I find the link I’ll post it, my old link has gone dead.
If anyone else knows the link I’m talking about please post it.
More drivel from I was a kid at the same time,
On April 28, 1975, Newsweek wrote an article stating:
http://denisdutton.com/newsweek_coolingworld.pdf
“Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve.”
Dr. Mcfly is his own worst enemy, give him enough airtime and carbon credits and he’ll hang himself with his own ridicules words. He’s from around here, taking down about him is like talking down to a Christians about Jesus, the faithful do not want to hear or believe anything you might say.
Years AND years of BS(bad science) told a lot of us to just ignore anything he says(even his boring broken record AGW/DOOMSDAY laden Nature of things show) here in Canada, he jumped the science shark years ago and anyone using him as a expert is questionable, to be ignored.
Funny, he once was in an internment camp at war time for his race and now openly advocates putting non-believers in internment camps for imprisonment and retraining. Maybe in cali, I like the warmth! 🙂

Civilization in the form of clean water, heat in the winter, stable food supply, medicine have all contributed to the longevity of people like Suzuki and Lovelock and the nauseating Paul Ehrlich –
– all for them to spit upon it as disagreeable to their tastes; Dave Suzuki never had to suffer much in his life, but people certainly have had to suffer plenty of Dave Suzuki.
Anybody who pays the least attention to anything these people have to say needs their head examined

A number of years ago (more than 10, but less than 15), I was a participant in a “focus group” sponsored by the David Suzuki Foundation. The apparant purpose of this focus group was to determine what would be the next most marketable topic. I was told that there were a number of these focus groups being held across Canada.
This is my first clue that David Suzuki is more interested in making money than truly helping humanity.
So we have a “West Coaster” in the name of David Suzuki contrasted by an “East Coaster” in the name of Steve McIntyre. It reminds me of a joke I once heard: Years ago North America was tipped downwards to the West; all the smart people hung on!

Robert of Ottawa says: “…We can create forest fires with a box of matches….”
Let’s see you stop one with a box of matches.

I have Suzuki’s extensive hyperbole to thank for realizing that the Warming Scare was just a theory with little evidence. I’m waiting for a mud-raking documentary highlighting his bogus claims to appear. Given Suzuki’s popularity up here in Canada, it could pull in some good ratings (provided there is no Hockey game on.)

I don’t object to the claim that mankind has some power to produce or defend against disaster. However, I don’t think this is something special about our species.
Animals can cause disasters. For example, consider birds spreading a pandemic.
Animals can defend against disasters too. For example, escaping fires by running or flying away from them.
Come to think of it, just about every species defends against disasters by the mere act of reproduction and propagation, since most disasters are not global.

I’m beginning to get the picture. We started messing around with internal combustion engines, and, lo and behold – Krakatoa blew up. Seems about right to me, but I do have this small problem with correlation and cause.

Mr Suzuki has fallen for the utmost temptation , everything is relative except man , who is able to control his own and the destiny of others , stronger than the forces of nature ! How long ? He can be gone the next minute ! Does he show respect to his parents , does he show humbleness , does he show gratitude ? Who on earth choose him to be his hero ?

As most WUWT readers already know, David Suzuki is not the only voice at CBC on climate change. Rex Murphy definitely has an “alternate” view.

Have always wondered how they might interact at staff meeting.

A tip for Dr. Fruitfly. Pride comes before a fall and a haughty spirit before disaster.

Note to the moderator. I see many post in this subject that are simply what you usually called ”personal attack” , i call them ”personal insults” – still none of them have been moderated (removed) as you are so quick when someone is using the same words against people like Monckton or D’Aleo and al.

I think reality speaks for itself – evidence of climate change is all around us. Very few scientists, if any, would refute the idea that carbon emissions building up in the atmosphere causes climate change. It’s up there with the law of gravity. If climate change, with all of it’s disastrous consequences, isn’t God-like, then what is?

David Suzuki was in Australia recently and was interviewed by phone for an hour by Kim Hill who is one of the top interviewers of New Zealand.
You can listen to the interview here:
http://podcast.radionz.co.nz/sat/sat-20101030-1105-David_Suzuki_a_sustainable_future-048.mp3
Suzuki was confused and under the impression that he was talking to an Australian audience. Kim Hill politely put him right and asked intelligent questions.
At the end of the interview Suzuki said “This has been an unbelievably negative interview, I have to say. You challenged everything that I said.”
I dispute that the interview was in any way negative. Has he never been interviewed properly before? Kim Hill as always had done her homework, and didn’t ridicule anything that he said, even though much of what he said was ridiculous.
