McCartney, in Interview, Compares Global Warming Skeptics to Holocaust Deniers

Sir Paul McCartney just can’t let it be.

The former Beatle predicted in an interview that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico might expedite a move to cleaner, renewable energy sources in the world.

Sir Paul could have stopped while he was ahead, but McCartney went on to compare people who don’t believe in global warming to “those who don’t believe there was a Holocaust.”

“Sadly we need disasters like this to show people,” McCartney said in an exclusive interview with The Sun. “Some people don’t believe in climate warning — like those who don’t believe there was a Holocaust.”

McCartney continued, “But the facts indicate that there’s something going on and we’ve got to be aware of it if we want our kids to inherit a decent world, not a complete nightmare of a planet — clean, renewable energy is for starters.”

McCartney also defended President Obama’s handling of the two-month-old crisis.

“I don’t accept the criticism of Barack over the oil spill,” said McCartney, who met the president for the first time earlier this month.

“I think he’s been great. It’s tough if we Brits whinge that he’s whingeing at us. Tough, then don’t spill oil.”

A representative for McCartney in London said the singer would have no further comment.

Just how is he trying to link a technical failure a mile underwater to anything climate-related? Is that really what he said?

I love how stupid it is for someone to link an oil rig disaster to global warming. I’ve spent thousands of dollars over the years watching McCartney in concert. Who knew he was such a goober?

The rock ‘n roller Alice Cooper pretty much sums up the intellectual expertise of rock musicians:

Never one to avoid self-examination, Alice (
aka Vincent Damon Furnier) added: “If you’re listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you’re a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we’re morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal.”

Hmm. I’m not sure how an oil spill can convince me that global warming from anthropogenic greenhouse gases exists beyond a token effect on land surface temperatures. An oil spill is an environmental catastrophe, but, in and of itself, it has nothing to do with anthropogenic global warming.

Uh Uh, he played the Holocaust card. Guess we better all just shut up now.
If we say we disbeleive in AGW then clearly, we don’t agree that the Holocaust occurred. The two topics are intimately related after all. Did you know that if there was no AGW in the late 20th century, then the Holocaust would not have happened? Didn’t you realise that the Holocaust was caused not by the Nazis, but by AGW? You cannot deny one without denying the other. Face it, questioning AGW is Anti Semitic.

So if I spill a large amount of milk into a natural aqueous system, should we be worried about global cooling since the milk is “natural” (better be organic)?
Oh wait, the oil was already present under the gulf…naturally!
So how again does being a music star give him authority on the matter?

It’s the private jet travel. Their excessive lifestyle makes them feel guilty – “What if everyone would do what i do? The planet couldn’t stand it!” – and to compensate this guilt feeling they project it onto others – “We’re all guilty.” – and start becoming moral apostles.
This is just a hypothesis and i haven’t had time to analyze it properly, but i have a good correlation and abundant sample data: Al Gore, David Laurie, Paul McCartney, Prince Charles, Annie Lennox, well just about the entire pop jet set, just enter the name of your favourite internationally performing artist in google and add “global warming” and you inevitably find your favourite artist proving him- or herselves to be a scientific doofus.
So i’m not sure about the direction of the causation or whether there is one but the hypothesis is: Frequent jet travel, especially when in privately owned jets, causes AGW activism. AGW activism causes frequent jet travel to a much lesser degree – only during conferences like COP15. There might be a potential for positive feedback, locking the affected individual in an ever-increasing loop of activism and jet travel.
Maybe EADS, Boeing, Bombardier and Textron are behind this.

I think there is tendency to lump all environmental issues together under the general category of “look what the stupid humans are doing now to destroy the planet.” And specifically related to Mr. McCartney’s statement, while it was unfortunate to bring up the holocaust in relationship to AGW skepticism, I think the underlying psychological dynamic for SOME, but not all AGW “warmist” and skeptic alike, is similar to a doctrine of faith rather than science, in that no matter what the evidence is or appears to be, they will not change their belief patterns.

I think the point, and Obama is also going this way, is that we wouldn’t be looking for oil a mile under the Gulf if we weren’t burning way too much oil and increasing CO2 and causing global warming. It is then further obvious that we wouldn’t be looking for oil a mile under the ocean surface if we weren’t running out of oil everywhere else. The dangers of deep-water drilling have also obviously been grossly understated by the evil oil industry (because otherwise we’d all be engineers and fully understand how difficult this might be). Since we are therefore obviously running out of oil and nobody had previously mentioned that drilling over a mile deep is potentially difficult and dangerous, clean, alternative energy sources must be pursued without question.
The logic only falls apart if we have other oil sources relatively readily available that weren’t, for whatever reason, actively being pursued.
How many people want to see Sir Paul’s next world concert tour by entirely powered by alternative energy?

A person can logically argue that our dependence on petroleum has lead to the gulf spill, but I cannot accept the tie in to “climate warming”. If you want to argue that deep water drilling has unacceptable risks relative to other pursuits by mankind I’ll disagree, but the argument is logical.
Obamaco are the group that are prohibiting land based oil exploitation within the USA. I’m not suggesting that this could displace off shore drilling. I understand that this particular oil field was accessible from shallow waters, but Govt. regulations forced them into deep water.

To me this is just more proof that the mainstream media (which is where the average person, including celebrities, obtain most of their information on topics such as climate change) have abdicated their responsibility to educate the public. People are simply not getting a balanced view of the science and all of its uncertainties and the public is being conditioned to assume that global warming is, at least in part, responsible for all environmental catastrophes, even earthquakes.
It’s amazing how little has changed in media reporting on climate change, particularly in North America, since Climategate.

Its easy to explain why you should get wound up;
This is the way the CAGW’ers have been working all along. People read newspapers and magazines. They read this. It’s a part of the brainwashing. They dont go to the source of the data. Over time people tend to echo such statements just like parrots.
So it is a very sly and successful approach. Show pictures of Obama and a Beatle together. Or Bono. Or Sting. Have an interview.

No one in their right mind wants or likes oil spill but lets put it into perspective.
Suite101
“….offshore oil production contributes only about 3% of the total global marine oil pollution while natural oil seeps add up to 45% of yearly oil pollution with the remaining 52% coming from “down the drain” oil pollution, petroleum transportation and industrial oil consumption.”
* Natural oil seeps off the coast of Alaska release about 100,000 gallons of oil a year into the marine environment.
* The rate of release of oil seeps off the coast of California is estimated to be nearly six million gallons of oil a year, with Coal Oil Point, in Santa Barbara Sound being the largest natural oil seep.
* The Gulf of Mexico natural oil seeps release over 40 million gallons of oil into the marine environment every year easily dwarfing the BP oil spill so far.

“I think the point, and Obama is also going this way, is that we wouldn’t be looking for oil a mile under the Gulf if we weren’t burning way too much oil and increasing CO2 and causing global warming.
Not exactly sure what point you’re trying to make here, Mike, but to answer your question BP drilling in mile deep water had absolutely nothing to do with lack of availability of sources in shallower water but because the environmentalists (include Obama and current political majority) drove them further and further from shore in the name of environmentalism. That really work out great, yeah?

This is from a paper in Puerto Rico when he did a concert there last April:
“José Hernández, of AEG Live, said some 130 people would travel with the star and that the scenery and projections would be among the most spectacular of any production ever. Two 747 airplanes are expected to touch down with equipment for the concert, including a 125 by 80 foot stage, 12 miles of cable and 5,000 AMPS, as well as 31 buses.”
The article is here:
http://www.prdailysun.com/?page=news.article&id=1268964519
My brother went to the concert and later told me that Sir Paul did not stay in a hotel, he stayed in the plane. His guess is that one of the aircraft is a VIP custom job, the other a cargo plane.
Let’s see now, 2 747s from England to Puerto Rico… According to this “warmist” website:
http://www.chooseclimate.org/flying/mapcalc.html
He spewed out 1,122,580 kilograms of CO2 into the atmosphere in about 7-hours (approx.). Want to compare that to a Hummer?
– and that was just one-way……
– and he’s going all over the world doing this……

I am getting more and more convinced that there are much more AGW followers who are scientifically-challenged, such as Paul McCartney, many Hollywood stars, journalists and politicians than there are scientifically knowledgable people who support AGW. On the other hand, skeptics tend to range between at least knowledgable in science, able to understand scientific reports to outright experts in scientific areas. More than this I have noted that the most skeptic of them all are solar scientists. In fact, the IPCC could only find one single solar ‘ scientist’ who was willing to cook a report for them, now debunked by many. Mr. McCartney should stick to music, or has he lost his genious there too? And he should also at least learn some science and accept that all energy on this planet comes from the sun.

June 25, 2010 2:38 pm

Response to all those above who claim that Sir Paul is hypocritical in spewing out CO2 in modern-day concerts. That’s nothing, folks.
Paul and the others in the Fab Four were responsible for unprecedented fossil fuel use in the 60’s and onward, that was used to manufacture and transport massive numbers of things my generation purchased, including vinyl recordings and record players and the “needles” they required, portable radios and batteries to run them, gasoline for the car we borrowed from parents just so we could drive around with the radio at top volume playing Beatles tunes, then later 8-track tape decks and the 8-track tapes, later still cassette tape decks and cassette tapes so we could record the songs off the radio, later still CD players and the CDs to play in them, and later still DVDs of various movies and concerts The Lads played. It was known as Beatlemania; if you were there, then you know. If you are too young to remember it, try watching the 1965 Shea Stadium concert on youtube. Now, THAT was reality tv. And it lives on, as demonstrated by continued strong sales of their recordings even as the forms of digital media continue to evolve.
I expect that nothing Sir Paul does from now on could ever equal even a small percentage of all that CO2 production.
As to his wealth, it derives mostly from royalties from song copyrights he purchased. I suspect he plays concerts because they are so very much fun, not because he needs the money.
However, I had hoped Sir Paul would have had just a bit more sense than he displayed in the interview. Perhaps he should have taken a cue from Elvis, who answered a reporter that asked him to comment on politics, “I’m just an entertainer.”
Fab Four Forever.

Hi Jimbo,
Ummm. Your statement:
* The Gulf of Mexico natural oil seeps release over 40 million gallons of oil into the marine environment every year easily dwarfing the BP oil spill so far.
doesn’t seem to be correct. Estimates are now in the 1.5 million to 2.5 million gallons of crude per day range. Since it seems unreasonable to assume that the flow has gotten BIGGER over time, that means that for ~70 days it has been spewing the same amount. That means about 140 million gallons, raw number. BP has been capturing more and more, but I don’t think enough that 40 million galons per year dwarfs the total released thus far.

Quite apart from the illogical link between oil spills and CO2 AGW, why would this disaster result in a move to renewable energy?
Did the Exxon Valdez spill do anything to change energy behaviour? Did Saddam’s lighting of all those Kuwaiti wells do anything to change energy behaviour?
I was brought up with a saying I find particularly useful when people hope that something will somehow change human behaviour: “if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

I really liked his music, but music keys and emotional response, not rational. Anyone that gives any credence or validity to what a musician has to say is a twit.
Not so. Try learning to perform a Beethoven piano sonata (etc.). It’s different from that end. And the illicit substances don’t help.

Hmm. I’m not sure how an oil spill can convince me that global warming from anthropogenic greenhouse gases exists beyond a token effect on land surface temperatures. An oil spill is an environmental catastrophe, but, in and of itself, it has nothing to do with anthropogenic global warming.

Well, I remember to have read about an hypothesis which assumed there may have been geological periods with natural oil spill on a very large scale which could have calmed the waters, hence diminished the spray effect and therefore the water evaporation rate.

It is kind of dangerous to be saying that if you believe in the holocaust you also have to believe in global warming, or if you believe cigarettes can cause cancer then you also have to believe in global warming. They are in effect saying that our predecessors once made a case that you believe, therefore everything we say is true. They are in effect staking the reputation of everything the politicians and beaurocrats proclaim on everything on AGW rather than answer the criticisms. They may as well just say you are right, but watch your back because we hate you for it. What on earth is pushing somebody like paul mccartney to froth such petty vindictiveness on something he clearly knows nothing about? I have a knighthood and don’t like to see titled people having their motives questioned perhaps…

Heh, it was just a quote from London Calling, indicating that Punk and New Wave was the music i grew up with. And coincidentally London Calling says “An ice age is coming, the sun is growing thin…” which doesn’t mean that Joe Strummer was a great climatologist but it’s just funny – i always admired the Beatles, especially John Lennon and George Harrison. There’s a great version of a Harrison song on Patti Smith’s album “12”, “Within You Without You”, very hippyesque but great music.

I really wish that entertainers that have no clue about anything other than getting their mugs in the press would shut up about ecology or politics.
I could say more but I think that’s is pretty concise and to the point and shouldn’t get me in trouble.

Casper,
I agree with the idiot part but I’m not so sure about useful?
I really don’t understand why pepoole waste money on concerts or record of men who prance around the stage in tight pants and faces that are so wrinkled and puckered that you have to wonder if they are alive or animatronics???????????
I’m really not certain why people bought his stuff after helter skelter came out.

kwik has it at 11:38.
Entertainers of all stripe, icons, pop flashes in the pan, are actively courted by those with something to sell because they can piggyback on the marketing success of the icon.
If kids rush out in the first hour of an album release and buy it directly to platinum, how many kids’ minds will also soak in the fact that the artist said “global warming is real”? How many baby boomers and aging hippies still see a Beatle as youth, change, transformative, earth-shaking?
Algore and others often invited rock people, whom they then sold on AGW crud.
Look back on the Aerosmith website and blogsite, to see how they became not only believers but advocates on their fansite–they were guests of Gore, and OVERWHELMED that a former vice president would take an interest in meeting them personally, when they’re just…rock stars.
How many rock stars come from the societal and educational backgrounds that give them standing other than their music?
They are courted, they are used, and twitter-witted fans soak in the AGW spew along with everything else.
It is a calculated marketing ploy.
And I don’t know if John was the “smart” Beatle. he married Yoko, didn’t he? Yeesh.
He was the angry bitter raving socialist.
“Imagine” was so sweet when I was young, and so bittersweet after he was killed.
Now it has enough distance to be an insipid nihilist anthem to nothingness.
It isn’t sweet or smart in the least, other than using their immense popularity to get “the message” out in droning soft song.

Maybe Prince Chaaahles —or his daddy— had a long talk with him?
Maybe he’s in hock up to his gills, and needed some ‘relief?’
Or maybe —just maybe— the boy is as clueless as he appears?
Only time will tell.

That’s interesting, in the consideration that the Nazis considered dark-skinned (non-Aryan) people to be ‘inferior’ and therefore in need of ‘elimination.’

Paul McCartney wanted to say that we need catastrophes like the oil spill in order to realise that there’s a problem. He didn’t want to say that the spill is a proof of AGW.
Just one logical step before the logic of the eco terrorists of Crishton’s “State of Fear”
899 The nazis wanted to kill all the jews in all of Europe (and they were not dark skinned) , they had an alliance with the Japanese the Italians , radical muslims and some nationalist Hindous (Bose) .
There existed a muslim division in the waffen ss (Handchar division) mainly Bosnian muslims and volunteers (estimated at about 50 000) who listened to al Husseinis calls on german arabic radio.
We’re getting off the topic but this issue is a very intersting one.

Well Spector, he IS a Lord, and he certainly has the bankbook to buy a seat.
As for Prince Chaaaaaarles, I am in love with the end of the Simpsons episode, where cameras are installed by a British security team around Springfield. By the end of the episode, they’ve been removed, and the British security expert has to tell the Queen that Britain’s favorite reality show has gone dark.
Her Majesty says, “I’ll miss that Ralph Wiggum (ADD/HD child on meds, who speaks in complete non sequitur); He reminds me of my boy.”
Enter Charles stage right, with an angora cat on a pillow, saying “Mummy! Guess what?! My cat’s breath smells just like cat food!” Broad toothy grin. Queen rolls eyes.
As we get progressively more stupid (by design? sigh), this is what we have to look forward to in one world governance.
An “aristocracy” of moonbats.

“Its easy to explain why you should get wound up;”
You missed my point – getting wound up about what the next bandwagon-jumping celebrity says is a pointless waste of energy. Good grief, get a grip… if we all got wound up about the likes of Bono and Leonardo DiCaprio spouting off from their platforms of celebrity, we’d all be dead from exhaustion.
The best way to deal with this tripe is to ignore the hell out of it, and instead concentrate on the science. Those who sling mud tend to find it sticks to them by association, and those who blindly believe in what celebrity says will most certainly not be affected by the likes of thee and me pointing out the stupidity of his statements.
Of course, if you want to get wound up, knock yourself out :).
