The seven experts who advised President Obama on how to deal with offshore drilling safety after the Deepwater Horizon explosion are accusing his administration of misrepresenting their views to make it appear that they supported a six-month drilling moratorium — something they actually oppose.
The experts, recommended by the National Academy of Engineering, say Interior Secretary Ken Salazar modified their report last month, after they signed it, to include two paragraphs calling for the moratorium on existing drilling and new permits.
Salazar’s report to Obama said a panel of seven experts “peer reviewed” his recommendations, which included a six-month moratorium on permits for new wells being drilled using floating rigs and an immediate halt to drilling operations.
Wasn’t that the reason John Christy left the IPCC after the first report? His work was edited/modified by the bureaucrats without his knowledge, review, or approval and published as if it represented the scientific opinion.
Remember when the so-called “truthers” were running around screaming that it was an “inside job” ? One of their main lines of ‘reasoning’ was to look at who purportedly ‘benefitted’ from 911. Shouldn’t these troofer types be applying the same ‘logic’ to the oil spill at least for consistency’s sake as administration is certainly exploiting the spill to further their kookie energy policy agenda.

At least they apologized about adding the 6mos moratorium recomendation after the scientest signed off on the report. Now if only another news agency besides FOX would report the apology…I’m not holding my breath.
The significant thing in that report was that the deep water drilling rigs will leave the gulf and go elsewhere, i.e. follow the money.
Where will that leave the US over the next five years in their bid for energy independence. If I was a nuclear plant builder I would view this Obama decision to suspend deep water drilling a godsend to expedite and clear the way for a new generation of nuclear power plants.
Oh and a few wind and wave electrical generating systems as a sop for the green environmental vote to charge the batteries of all those electric cars you just must have in the USA.
Why do these despicable deniers/sceptics hold so firmly to their convictions and ideals and do not accept any “reasons” whatsoever from us, even cash money?
Simply because they are noble men and women.
Noble is who can not EVER abandon his or her ideals, who fights for them, and who can not even imagine or figure out to exchange his/her ideals for a retribution. It´s really impossible for them such a thing.

There are 900+ comments on that Fox article! Even allowing for the multiple posting of the same comment time and again by some of the contributors thats some impressive numbers.
Oh and in and amongst all the shouting I noted one interesting assertion that the oil from that very field could have been accessed by shallow water drilling but that “environmental” concerns forced all drilling out into the deep sea where, as we have seen, the engineering difficulties are far more pronounced.
Can anyone confirm or refute this? Is that field so geographically spread as to be both in deep and shallow water?

Is anyone really surprised by this? What is disheartening is that I don’t see a ground swell of demands that Salazar step down. Not that it would matter, he’d be replaced with another jobs hating, energy loathing anti-capitalist that doesn’t give a damn about the state of this nation nor the people of this nation, nor its needs of energy and jobs. What really gets me, is in the same breath, people of his ilk will babble about the need to ween ourselves from foreign produced energy. So, obviously, the answer is to destroy off-shore drilling near the U.S. The despicable b****rds will be held accountable at some point. They imposed the moratorium despite the pleadings of Governor Jindal , and I suspect the govs of the other gulf coast states as well – except Florida , of course . The resulting loss of jobs and income will cripple their economies . Furthermore , every day the govt. refuses to take any steps to clean this mess up by any means at their disposal – including waiving the Jones Act and employing genetically engineered bacteria – means more spoiled beaches , more ruined oyster beds and more devastated fishing grounds . Trouble is they are working….don’t have time for anything else. However there is always hope for hard working people, good always prevails.
Here in the UK there is a feeling that the Obama administration is out to destroy BP. A company which changed its name from British Petroleum ten years ago. A compnay that is listed in New York as well as in London and which declares its dividends in dollars not in pounds. A company that has as many US directors as British and is chaired by a Swede. A company that employs almost twice as many US citizens as British. A company with between 35% and 40% US shareholders including many pension plans.
Transocean, the US-owned contractors (who shifted their HQ to Switzerland two years ago), who owned and operated the rig which did the damage has just made a $1 billion payment. No question of its dividend being placed in escrow until their responsability for the disaster is explored. Perhaps they are cleverer than BP in the parties to which they make their political donations.
Obama’s offshore drilling moratorium is a panic response. He cannot think of any way to stop the leak, so he does the first thing that comes to mind, regardless of the fact, the absolute fact, that it will only exacerbate the situation.
The government’s responsibility is not to cap the well, an area where it has no competence, but to ameliorate the damage. It is failing there. To make things worse, govt-issued red tape is holding up efforts by local governments and individuals to protect themselves.
Obama could cut through the red tape by edict. He is not of a mind to do this, that would take leadership. All he knows how to do is accuse others, to stir the masses with diatribes and demagoguery, but that doesn’t bother an oil spill in the least.
We have booms stacked in warehouses, we have bulldozers and dredges ready to seal off barrier islands, but the man with the authority is devoting his efforts to avoiding the responsibility.
A deliberate false statement to a federal officer is obstruction of justice. It should be prosecuted and if the party found guilty the party should share a cell next to Bernie (Madoff or Ebbers take your pick). Not to be too political about this, but I am getting rather tired of being lied to.

As well as transocean who ran the rig day to day, I believe the failed BOP was made and maintained by US sub contractors.
Maybe BP’s strategy of subcontracting so much activity is the wrong business model. But if the contracts are right, BP should have claims.
The key point tho’ for this blog, is that the spill will be used as evidence that all should get off oil even quicker, via Carbon C & T (conveniently forgetting that much US power is from coal, as I understand it), and even more windmills…..
Incidentally, I send my sincere condolences over the spill to you USA chaps; it is very sad, but maybe less bad for the environment on a larger scale than everyone thinks – oceans have been dealing with spills and seeps for years, which I know is little consolation when looking at local impact.
Just been reported on British TV news that Obama is planning to use this whole thing (hence the ridiculous rhetoric) to push ahead with his climate beliefs, so expect heavy tax on oil companies. Hitting BP with every chance he gets is doubly stupid as a strong BP is going to be required in the coming months and years, not one whose shares have been smashed by Obama’s mouth. Secondly, BP is 40% owned by British pension funds, but another 40% is owned by American ones! The news report says that he will justify sweeping changes to how the US gets its energy by stating that drilling for oil is unsustainable on environmental grounds.

The real tragedy is not the oil spill but the wanton blame shifting, political positioning and back stairs deal making with the real culprits who caused the accident in the first place. I’m sure they know and still BP will not comment on how much oil is down there. But judging by the amount of oil spitting out of this gusher it would seem like they’ve found another Saudi Arabia….. They were in the process of capping the well when the accident occurred so they could go drill someplace else. The “oil crisis” is, well, you guys figure that one out.

A temporary moratorium on deep offshore drilling until it is understood what went wrong with the Deepwater Horizon well is reasonable, but to place a specific time limit is not. You stop until you understand what went wrong, you take measures to fix it, then you continue exploration.
When the administration goes out to their buds in the press and beat their chests about how much BP behind they’re going to kick and how much money they’re going to soak BP for I hope everyone realizes that BP is just going to jack up the price of gasoline and other petrochemicals to recoup their losses.

The enemy of big oil is cheap oil, the enemy of big government is cheap oil.
Cheap energy is the friend of a vibrant economy and high employment and economic growth.
Enegy companies stand to make more money by artificially increasing the price of their product, Venezuela needs the PPB to be 70+ to feed its socialist ecomomy and countries that produce oil also need the price of a barral to be high(see OPEC) but why? Well the fact is that oil production costs are high but if you look at the raw costs of exploration,recovery and refinement it does not add up BUT if you factor in the governments need for ever higher tax incomes to feed its growing appetite for money it makes sense.
Cheap energy is the peoples friend but expensive energy is the political classes friend and guess who wins in the end? My guess is that this whole emergency has been exploited as a rate hike mechanism, if the gulf reserves are as big as estimates prove then the price per barral will plummet and a lot of people who have relied on high prices for so long will be very upset.
The worlds ecomony has been manipulated by vested interests for a long time, a lot of people have a vested interest in the price of oil remaining high not least governments who need the tax revenue and the oil companies who have to provide that revenue, it is also worth bearing in mind that there are those in power who believe in constricting economic growth as a means of control both political and as a means of controlling humanity.
The model of restricting and restraining economic growth comes from a class of left wing eductaors passing on their highly flawed theories to the post war leaders via university education, the lessons learned from marxist ideologues were imprinted on the generation of politicians and economists that now rule over us. The fact that this model is disaterous for humanity means nothing to those who rule us.
America was built on cheap energy combined with a restless popular capitalism and it was a very successful model, but it was the enemy of left wing socialist big government who hate and despise that kind of freedom because it means loss of control and influence over ‘society’.
The socio political narrative followed by the ruling classes learned at university is a failure in terms of human progress and fulfillment yet still it is followed because political power and control is the goal.

i wonder if the public noticed the amount of earth activities near the Gulf before the spill. it is reasonable to think that the pressures below the Gulf sea bed were raised that it could very well be the reason for the accident. the fault will probably be those who kept drilling when the warning signs were obvious. perhaps all offshore drilling should be examined right now, just in case. if it happens again, there will be no excuses.
we need that offshore oil for sure, but maybe right now it’d be a good idea to check this excited earth out.
It is quite clear that the Deepwater Horizon exploratory well was in deep trouble at least several weeks before the explosion on the drilling rig. Certainly, “managers” within the BP organization made several really bad decisions, due to budget and schedule pressures, and clearly, those few managers had no knowledge of the drilling technology involved. They were, as I call them, simply “money men”.
After analyzing the data as best I can (I am a retired professional civil engineer), for an exploratory well, the flow rate is unheard of, which rather well explains, in my mind, the early estimates which underestimated the actual flow by a factor greater than 10. The actual flow rate, for an exploratory oil well, beggars belief.
I also now think that there is no possible way that this could have been anticipated by any oil company, nor could any oil company have the means to control it, contain it, or provide adequate cleanup measures. (my opinion, of course).
There is also has been no single point of authority in our federal government established or appointed whose duty is to deal with the consequences of this national disaster, and I strongly fear, no person in our federal government with the courage to do so, from the President on down the line.
Instead of a responsible governmental reaction, I expect that this national disaster is going to be exploited to the hilt to justify liberal political goals to destroy capitalism and replace it with socialism, if not worse.
