Most idiotic global warming headline ever

I may just divert to Toronto from Chicago and pay this writer a visit so I can tell him to his face what an idiot he is, or have my two new Canadian friends, Guy and Stuart, do it for me. He deserves it. How do the publishers of this newspaper reconcile printing such blatant idiocy based on what the writer calls “weeks old” science? How does such a headline get published? At first I thought maybe it was just the copy editor at fault, making a dumb headline, but then I read this in the body of the story:

Over 4.5 billion people could die from Global Warming related causes by 2012, as planet Earth accelarates [sic] into a greed-driven horrific catastrophe.

6.7 billion people in the world today, and 4.5 billion will die in less than two years due to a temperature rise that will be less in magnitude than our regularly experienced variance? There’s a link at the end, feel free to sound off. We need to remind this newspaper of this in 2012 – Anthony

Over 4.5 Billion people could die from Global Warming-related causes by 2012

Hydrate hypothesis illuminates growing climate change alarm

Compiled by John Stokes

A recent scientific theory called the “hydrate hypothesis” says that historical global warming cycles have been caused by a feedback loop, where melting permafrost methane clathrates (also known as “hydrates”) spur local global warming, leading to further melting of clathrates and bacterial growth.

In other words, like western Siberia, the 400 billion tons of methane in permafrost hydrate will gradually melt, and the released methane will speed the melting. The effect of even a couple of billion tons of methane being emitted into the atmosphere each year would be catastrophic.

The “hydrate hypothesis” (if validated) spells the rapid onset of runaway catastrophic global warming. In fact, you should remember this moment when you learned about this feedback loop-it is an existencial turning point in your life.

By the way, the “hydrate hypothesis” is a weeks old scientific theory, and is only now being discussed by global warming scientists. I suggest you Google the term.

Now that most scientists agree human activity is causing the Earth to warm, the central debate has shifted to when we will pass the tipping point and be helpless to stop the runaway Global Warming.

There are enormous quantities of methane trapped in permafrost and under the oceans in ice-like structures called clathrates. The methane in Arctic permafrost clathrates is estimated at 400 billion tons.

Methane is more than 20 times as strong a greenhouse gas as CO2, and the atmosphere currently contains about 3.5 billion tons of the gas.

The highest temperature increase from global warming is occurring in the arctic regions-an area rich in these unstable clathrates. Simulations from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) show that over half the permafrost will thaw by 2050, and as much as 90 percent by 2100.

Western Siberia is heating up faster than anywhere else in the world, having experienced a rise of some 3C in the past 40 years. The west Siberian peat bog could hold some 70 billion tonnes of methane. Local atmospheric levels of methane on the Siberian shelf are now 25 times higher than global concentrations.

Runaway Global Warming promises to literally burn-up agricultural areas into dust worldwide by 2012, causing global famine, anarchy, diseases, and war on a global scale as military powers including the U.S., Russia, and China, fight for control of the Earth’s remaining resources.

Over 4.5 billion people could die from Global Warming related causes by 2012, as planet Earth accelarates into a greed-driven horrific catastrophe.

UPDATE: To further illustrate just how bad this newspaper is, they have what appears to be a current date for the story right above the headline:

Yet when you look at the footer:

The automatic current date inserter gives the false impression of fresh news. It certainly fooled me and other readers. It appears this is an old article from 2007, still no less stupid, and to be proven false within 18 months. Readers that are visiting the blog page link provided by The Canadian are reporting AV software saying it to be an “attack site”. I’ve verified this, Visiting not recommended. Just make a date in your appointment calendar to drop a line to the editors (assuming this paper is still in existence in 2012) to remind them you and 4.5 billion other people aren’t dead. – A

OK, these people are idiots. But it appears to be a “new socially progressive” outlet – these people thrive on generating hysteria – and all you are really doing is giving them free publicity and driving traffic to their site. (At least you would be, if Firefox didn’t tell me that their page has been blocked because it is an “attack page”).

I suggest you google ‘common sense’, take two weeks to read up on it and then apply it!

Another point is that the piece seems to have been written in 2007, then giving many of us five rather than two years to survive. And I doubt the “hydrate hypothesis” was then only a few weeks old; I think I recall it in the early 1990s.

I don’t know where they get the idea that the “hydrate hypothesis” is only a ‘weeks old’ theory comes from, as I saw a documentary on that very subject about 5 years ago. It was suggested that this was the cause of the earth’s greatest ever greenhouse warming caused extinction 250 million years ago.
What these people have utterly failed to explain is why these hydrates did not “re-gassify” at all during much warmer periods (than current) in our recent past (during the last 12,000 years)

A seemingly exact number 4.5 billion, with no indication of how it was derived, no references, and no specification of what “GW-related causes” will kill all those people. It’s all very specific and totally unsubstantiated. A bit worse than usual, I guess. 😉

A cursory search shows that this article was published in 2007. Still mind-bendingly stupid, but it’s best to get this right – 2012 was 5 years hence at the time of publication.

May 18, 2010 12:46 am

Oddly enough, we probably need more of these loonies. The more and the louder they shriek, the more people will realise what a crock it really is, especially when shovelling all that ‘hidden warming’ from their driveways.

According to the Website this article was posted back in 2007, well we are 1/2 way from 2007 to 2012 so 2.25Bn people should have died by now. Oh and yes I did not experience the worst local winter in living memory, did not have to order extra oil for the central heating and the Artic Sea ice did not return to the long term average extent.

So, over the last 600,000 years the previous FOUR interglacials (Lord Monkton, SPPI) have been significantly warmer than today. So, howcome WAGTD so soon at a lower temperature! Now that temperature rate of increase would be truly amazing, & one for the Phil JonesMichael Mann diary! BTW, how is good old Michael’s (I feel I can call him Michael as I have got to know him so well on this interweb thingy) attack on his critics going these days? OTOH, why are they so worried & concerned, isn’t global population reduction the untimate goal of the greenie-socialists anyhow? Afterall, won’t they just be the hungry, weak, sickly, poor old Johnny forgeiners living in the poor countires that they want to keep poor, hungry, sick, weak, down at heel? I suggest that those 4.5 billion move to the Isle of Wight where there is plenty of room for them, considering that 6 billion could fit comfortably! Hang about, might this report just be a load of weeks old C%$P?

The serious point about this article is that we seem to have increasing numbers of people in our society who unquestioningly believe what they are told, whether it is Health: Bse, Sars, Swine flu will kill millions, Financial-pre 2007: ‘there is no limit t0 credit and the world economy will grow strongly’ and AGW; always ‘catastrophic’.
This has a nihilistic effect on some parts of the more gullible of our population. In that I would certainly include those taking extreme action at such as the Kingsnorth power station protest (what on earth do they think we will use for power) through to the youngest of our school children who are fed unbalanced propaganda and as a result increasingly believe we are heading for a melt down of their world before properly entering it.
We need to counter these calls with good science, facts, reason, and not with hand waving or claims that are as equally suspect as the science we deride, as in turn they will get derided.
WUWT and others do a service in pointing out climate contradictions to a wider audience, but the people we really need to influence aren’t listening.

“Socially progressive” and “cross cultural” are code words for a readership of losers and lefties of the unemployable and government sector variety.
Doubtless this publication will soon go the way of all flesh.
However, this thought does occur: if there is so much of this methane clathrate, why is no one exploiting it? I suspect a couple of zeroes have been added to the size estimate – helps to make the concept a lot more scary and that, of course, is a typical alarmist tactic.

Daniel H
May 18, 2010 2:06 am

I wouldn’t be surprised if the author purposely chose the 2012 date in order to coincide with the Mayan end of the world prophecy. Most of these “progressive” kooks are obsessed with ancient Mayan prophecies, Nostradamus predictions, Astrology charts, and Eastern mysticism. The religion of AGW ties into these themes rather handily.

michel
May 18, 2010 2:07 am

Well, the great thing about this one is we can all relax. No need to limit emissions or worry about Kyoto or Copenhagen. This is either going to happen in two years or it is not, but in any case, there is nothing we can do about it now. I mean, even if we started some giant global cooling project to try to refreeze the permafrost, it would take us 10-20 years to get the stuff built and into place and powered on. By then we would all, or most of us, be dead of heatstroke.
It was really a great relief to understand from this article just how bad it really is, and just how powerless we really are. Yes, its all down to greed, but never mind, if it had been down to the Sermon on the Mount, the result would have been the same.
Enjoy it while we can, is the only sensible conclusion, if they are right.

Although the article in the Canadian is preposterous scaremongering, I wonder if it may actually help destroy the AGW Theory by contributing to Armageddon Fatigue in the populace. If Joe Public’s reaction to warmist hysteria is a little chuckle and a theatrical yawn, the politicians will eventually see warmism as a vote-loser. Currently, in our risk-averse culture, politicians would rather fritter away public resource on this great hoax than be seen to question the wisdom of windmills and carbon taxes.
This silly newspaper is using the Tipping Point argument (also known as the Positive Feedback argument and the Unstable Equilibrium argument). Of course it’s poppycock, but it has a grain of plausibleness. I guess that the notion of a Tipping Point is borrowed from marine engineering. Imagine the (mad) captain of a ferry announcing over the Tannoy: “Will passengers please refrain from congregating in large numbers at the starboard side.” Most passengers would shuffle to port, because the scare story has a grain of plausibleness. Only a minority would sneer, “I’m no marine engineer, and he is the captain, but this is undue alarmism and I’m going to ignore it”.
The assumption that climate is governed by unstable equilibrium needs to be debunked. The other major assumption – that greenhouse gases drive temperature vastly more than solar or volcanic activity – also needs debunking. Flip away these two cards and the entire AGW house of cards topples down. In the words of Alex in Clockwork Orange: “Let’s get ’em, boys!”

The ‘clathrate gun’ idea has been around for years. Not much has been seen of it since the mid 2000’s though. An irony is when BP tried their suction hood thing it immediately bogged up with clathrate crystals, caused by the methane reacting with the sea water, which suggests the ocean floor clathrate ice is pretty stable.

This is nothing compared to what the BBC showed last night on British TV. You must watch it. Persevere with the slow build up at the start, then be mesmerised by what you are being told.
As a precursor to their 3 week ‘Spring Watch’ programme, Chris Packham (one of their presenters) delivered a lengthy factual documentary lasting 60 minutes. Almost every other paragraph after the first 20 minutes included his strong belief on the ‘serious threat of man-made global warming’ and ‘with Springs now arriving much earlier’. My wife and I sat on the edge of our sofa venting our anger at this rediculous propaganda – especially as it’s still so cold outside in May!! We thought very highly of Chris Packham before this onsluaght – as we wholly agree with his views on conservation and pollution. We’ve enjoyed every episode of the BBC’s Spring Watch over the past years – but not any more. We’ve also bought every edition of the BBC’s ‘Countryfile’ magazine to date – but not any more. How could they waste licence fee payers money on this scaremongering rubbish.
We’re suprised none of Anthony’s UK followers haven’t already made everyone aware of this crazy programme.

I disagree, Tony. Panic can spread more rapidly today, but even back when your grandma was a baby in the olden days there were weird and wonderful amazements. Just think of The Children’s Crusade:

… the name given to a variety of fictional and factual events which happened in 1212 that combine some or all of these elements: visions by a French or German boy; an intention to peacefully convert Muslims in the Holy Land to Christianity; bands of children marching to Italy; and children being sold into slavery.

In my own grandmother’s childhood one could buy a piano for sixpence as the end of the world was nigh.
With catastrophic gloam warming just over the hill I would sell you my piano for the price of a drink right now; except I think one of my grandchildren shows promise as a pianist and I want to pass it on to her…

Never leave the true radicals alive and heaving post revolution, they’re far too dangerous, ….so it gets me-a-wondering.

The methane in Siberian permafrost trope is a big chunk of that idiot book by Fred Pearce of New Scientist called “The Last Generation”. (I threw our copy in the recycling rather than give it away to Oxfam and let it terrify anyone else). If the world were going to turn to dust by 2012 and 4.5 billion people were going to die they had better start about…. NOW. Still it might save us spending all that money on the London Olympics.

We're all going to die
May 18, 2010 5:11 am

Not a new idea. John Barnes used it in “Mother of Storms”, perhaps 10 years ago. IIRC, the plot was that an attack using non-radioactive heat emitters (what?) on a terrorist camp in the arctic releases megatons of methane into the atmosphere, then a massive rolling storm scours the earth until stopped by a genuine deus ex machina…
And even that didn’t kill as many people as this article!

Not the Guardian’s claim, but the Pentagon’s claim, as the headline makes clear. I’ve read a synopsis of their report (can’t find the link) which apart from the garbage “predictions” contradicts itself many times.

According to http://www.agoracosmopolitan.com/about_us.html this news paper “is inspired by Canada’s very first newspaper called ‘Le Canadien’, that was founded in 1806”. So, according to this newspaper, Canada’s first newspaper was in 1806.
According to http://stephenkimber.com/journalism/canadas-first-newspaper Canada’s first newspaper, the Halifax Gazette, opened in 1752. So, in reality, Canada’s first newspaper was 54 years earlier than what was claimed.
Apparently fact checking is optional at this newspaper.

There must be some misprints in that article. Even the most extreme AGW hysterics know better than to say that Armageddon is barely 2 years away. Their game is to keep the date far enough in the future that they won’t be around to explain why their prediction flopped, while at the same time lining their pockets on the rubber-chicken hysteria circuit. Maybe it was meant to be 2112 instead of 2012? Or not. 😉

Related to this, Methane levels in the atmosphere appear to be stabilizing/heading down again after a brief upward blip in the last two years.
Barrow, Alaska’s measurements; this station leads the general global trends by a year or two and has the highest numbers (methane levels decrease as one moves from the far north and east asia to the southern hemisphere and the south pole).

The Observer in 2004, unquestioningly quoting the Pentagon, also has other gems:
“· By 2007 violent storms smash coastal barriers rendering large parts of the Netherlands uninhabitable. Cities like The Hague are abandoned. In California the delta island levees in the Sacramento river area are breached, disrupting the aqueduct system transporting water from north to south.
(…)
· By 2010 the US and Europe will experience a third more days with peak temperatures above 90F. Climate becomes an ‘economic nuisance’ as storms, droughts and hot spells create havoc for farmers.
(…)
Immigrants from Scandinavia seek warmer climes to the south.
(..)
· Mega-droughts affect the world’s major breadbaskets, including America’s Midwest, where strong winds bring soil loss.
(…)
Bangladesh becomes nearly uninhabitable because of a rising sea level, which contaminates the inland water supplies.”

John Stokes who wrote this piece is “co-managing editor” with Peggy Chang. “The Canadian” seems to be part of “Agora Cosmopolitan” based in Ottawa. Raymond Samuels of the “Cosmopolitan Party” has published all of his book through “Agora Cosmopolitan” The Cosmopolitan party claimed 600 members in 2004. This is interesting since “Agora Cosmopolitan” has international offices.
“The Cosmopolitan Party under Samuels’ leadership describes itself as progressive and centrist. The party’s platform (which is written in quasi-religious language) blames the open market economy and the rule of mammon for social inequality in Canada, and calls for government intervention to promote the quality of life. The party also advocates social justice and environmental concerns, and argues that Canadians have a basic right to food, shelter, and other necessities.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Samuels

Clearly the lesson here is that if you are going to hypothesize the deaths of 4.5B people, you need to do it with at least a 5 year horizon and not a 2 year horizon. Because apparently if you do it with a 5 year horizon then people will just roll their eyes at you a little bit, whereas if you do it with a 2 year horizon everybody gets all excited and stuff.
But if you are trying to raise long-term funding for your university, you need to do it in 30 yr or more horizons, both to ensure a long-term funding stream but also to avoid any unhappy falisifiability issues that could also jeopardize your funding before you’ve milked ole Bessy dry.

It comes down to food. That is why there is a scramble by corporations to oust private farmers from the market worldwide.
I find the grab for control of energy and control of the food supply at this time highly suspicious given the 1974 CIA report and the global Warming Con started within 2 years of each other. In 1973, Nicholas (Nick) Shackleton nailed it [Milankovitch cycles ] all down for certain. It is instructive to read Strong’s 1972 Stockholm speech…. Strong warned urgently about global warming… despite the fact the US was barely starting to warm.
The only one I know of who has tried to look at this question is David Archibald. see this paper: Quantifying the US Agricultural Productivity Response to Solar Cycle 24
The corporate take over of farming
US farming History: History, HACCP and the Food Safety Con Job
World Bank/IMF Structural Adjustment Programs
Agriculture and Monopoly capital
Manufacturing Food Crisis:
The Battle to Save Polish Farms:
This last is interesting because it is an eye witness report of a EU meeting:
“..After clearing her throat and leaning slowly forward, the chair-lady said: “I don’t think you understand what EU policy is. Our objective is to ensure that farmers receive the same salary parity as white collar workers in the cities. The only way to achieve this is by restructuring and modernising old fashioned Polish farms to enable them to compete with other countries agricultural economies and the global market. To do this it will be necessary to shift around one million farmers off the land and encourage them to take city and service industry jobs to improve their economic position. The remaining farms will be made competitive with their counterparts in western Europe.”
There in a nutshell you have the whole tragic story of the clinically instigated demise of European farming over the past three decades. We protested that with unemployment running at 20 percent how would one provide jobs for another million farmers dumped on the streets of Warsaw? This was greeted with a stony silence, eventually broken by a lady from Portugal, who rather quietly remarked that since Portugal joined the European Union, 60 percent of small farmers had already left the land. “The European Union is simply not interested in small farms,” she said.”

I admire the true beauty of such alarmist headlines.
The message is simple, we only have a few years to act NOW to stop global warming NOW or we will all be in deep deep trouble SOON.
But, according to the IPCC we already have many decades of warming to come. Due to the excess CO2 staying in the atmosphere for a hundred years with effects that last much longer, even if we shut down civilization NOW we’d still have perhaps a thousand years of increasing global temperatures until the rise tapered off and stopped.
Net result: We are heading into the deep deep brown stuff NOW and there’s nothing we can do NOW to stop it. So why do anything to fight it? Stock up the pantry and the armory, keep your family close, and wait for the Apocalypse to come about. You’ll be able to do something productive THEN.

“Truly an idiotic piece. But don’t confuse this with what climate scientists are saying.”
Gee Mike, don’t forget what other of the climate scientists (Dr. Richard Lindzen) said: “We see that all the models are characterized by positive feedback factors (associated with amplifying the effect of changes in CO2), while the satellite data implies that the feedback should be negative. Similar results are being obtained by Roy Spencer. This is not simply a technical matter. Without positive feedbacks, doubling CO2 only produces 1C warming. Only with positive feedbacks from water vapor and clouds does one get the large warmings that are associated with alarm. What the satellite data seems to show is that these positive feedbacks are model artifacts. This becomes clearer when we relate feedbacks to climate sensitivity (i.e. the warming associated with a doubling of CO2).”
Well, I know those climate scientists are a bit of an inconvenience to your faith.

No, you do not know about my beliefs or faith. I think AWG is more likely than not to be real and serious. But, I make it a point to read Lindzen and other critics. I am not an expert in this field, but on balance the work done by the mainstream climatologists seems more persuasive. However, I am skeptical that we really can greatly reduce our GHG emissions. I’ll support cap-and-trade as something to try. I don’t think it will destroy the economy (I find conservative critics to be unduly alarmist), but it will hurt some sectors. I do not know if we will find economical replacements for coal and oil. We may have to learn to live in a warmer world; the scarifies we inflict on ourselves will likely be severe but I am sure we will survive. I am pro nuclear but against ethanol subsidies.
Your dismissive attitude toward those you disagree with might lead one to conjecture that you are a tad bit close minded. But, hopefully that is not true. Did you read the realclimate links I gave? I’ll repeat them:

The CAGW forecast from 2004:
“By 2010 the US and Europe will experience a third more days with peak temperatures above 90F. Climate becomes an ‘economic nuisance’ as storms, droughts and hot spells create havoc for farmers. “
The reality:
In 2004 we had seventeen days in May with temps above 90F, three at 98F, so far this year we have barely made it up to 91F a couple of times. Last week the low was 35F and currently it is a chilly 57F. I am in the sunny south (mid NC) for goodness sake, it snows here about for one day every five years. Of course this year it snowed 8 days including 3 days in March!

“Less in magnitude than our regularly experienced variance”? Anthony, you’re being too generous. Did you mean to say “AT LEAST TWO ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE LESS than our regularly experience variance”?
Not to mention that it’s obviously a crapshoot whether that will be a positive or negative “rise”.
4.5 Billion? Even Canadian publishers aren’t that stupid.
But I could be persuaded, that if there happen to occur severely anomalous disasters in a short span, 1.5 billion could die of disease, famine and/or natural disasters that could have been averted, ameliorated or more rapidly responded to had resources not been so prodigally allocated from humanitarian and disaster relief channels to “climate change research”.

I think someone already mentioned this, but it’s worth repeating. A hypothesis is NOT a theory. There’s a reason we have two words and not one. Of course in common use the word ‘theory’ has come to mean ‘wild-a$$ guess’, thus the typical refrain of ‘it’s only a theory’.

May 19, 2010 10:25 am

well mike let’s keep in mind one thing. Even those on the side of global warming admit that it won’t amount to a hill of beans what we do. It’s not really the main focus. The main focus is cap and trade and they want money for their greening America campaign. If you don’t believe me look at the video of the most recent gathering of the Apollo Project.
Also keep in mind that they say currently we are pushing 30billion metric tonnes of co2 into the atmosphere which is 2ppm of the atmospheric gases. So that’s roughly 15 bmt ppm.
Like Steve said without feedback which the IPCC warmist’s seem to want to push higher and higher all the time the base warming is 1 degree C.
So since they think we’ll be pushing about 485 ppm co2 footprint in the next 100 years which supposedly will raise our temperature 7 degrees C but in all reality it will only be 1. So for a 1 degree C change in temperature it would take 33 years or more at 0% CO2 footprint to lower the temperature 1 degree.
No pray tell, where would you like to live for 33 years since no humans or animals or trucks or tractors, or planes, factories will be allowed on Earth with a 0% CO2 footprint.
The warmist’s are always talking about how bad the greenhouse effect is. Perhaps you could move to Mars where there is no greenhouse effect and it’s 120 at high noon and -140 at midnight.

There is no Nobel prize for name calling.

One wonders to what Jbar is referring to?
Have you ever noticed how poeple come and attack, take a swipe with their great mighty paw of contextual ignorance, and don’t actually say anything of substance?
Sigh.
There is no Nobel Prize for name calling. Seriously? Seriously Mr. Mrs. or Ms. Jbar, that’s the best you can come up with?
Don’t hold your breath. They may seriously come up with a Nobel Prize for name calling, after all Al Gore got a NPP for lying before Congress and America, and we still don’t know what the hell Obama got his for. Anything is possible.

I find it curiously odd that proponents of Anna’s actions last week at Mr. Watts business have pointed to his comments at the top of this post as justification of harassment and violence on his part.
I also find it strange that the NAS put out a letter from about 200 scientists (supposedly) that was against Glen Beck and others for their supposed incitement of violence against alarmist scientists, and then this Anna thing happens and then I’m reading the CRU emails and I’m seeing several emails where high up scientists are making comments about wishing they could take skeptics like Watts and McIntyre into a dark alley.
What lengths of hypocrisy and deceit is the other side willing to go expand, in order to win the day?
