He deserves it. How do the publishers of this newspaper reconcile printing such blatant idiocy based on what the writer calls “weeks old” science? How does such a headline get published? At first I thought maybe it was just the copy editor at fault, making a dumb headline, but then I read this in the body of the story:

Hydrate hypothesis illuminates growing climate change alarm

A recent scientific theory called the “hydrate hypothesis” says that historical global warming cycles have been caused by a feedback loop, where melting permafrost methane clathrates (also known as “hydrates”) spur local global warming, leading to further melting of clathrates and bacterial growth.
In other words, like western Siberia, the 400 billion tons of methane in permafrost hydrate will gradually melt, and the released methane will speed the melting. The effect of even a couple of billion tons of methane being emitted into the atmosphere each year would be catastrophic.
The “hydrate hypothesis” (if validated) spells the rapid onset of runaway catastrophic global warming. In fact, you should remember this moment when you learned about this feedback loop-it is an existencial turning point in your life.
By the way, the “hydrate hypothesis” is a weeks old scientific theory, and is only now being discussed by global warming scientists. I suggest you Google the term.
Now that most scientists agree human activity is causing the Earth to warm, the central debate has shifted to when we will pass the tipping point and be helpless to stop the runaway Global Warming.

Another point is that the piece seems to have been written in 2007, then giving many of us five rather than two years to survive. And I doubt the “hydrate hypothesis” was then only a few weeks old; I think I recall it in the early 1990s.

I don’t know where they get the idea that the “hydrate hypothesis” is only a ‘weeks old’ theory comes from, as I saw a documentary on that very subject about 5 years ago. It was suggested that this was the cause of the earth’s greatest ever greenhouse warming caused extinction 250 million years ago.
What these people have utterly failed to explain is why these hydrates did not “re-gassify” at all during much warmer periods (than current) in our recent past (during the last 12,000 years)

A cursory search shows that this article was published in 2007. Still mind-bendingly stupid, but it’s best to get this right – 2012 was 5 years hence at the time of publication.

The serious point about this article is that we seem to have increasing numbers of people in our society who unquestioningly believe what they are told, whether it is Health: Bse, Sars, Swine flu will kill millions, Financial-pre 2007: ‘there is no limit t0 credit and the world economy will grow strongly’ and AGW; always ‘catastrophic’.
This has a nihilistic effect on some parts of the more gullible of our population. In that I would certainly include those taking extreme action at such as the Kingsnorth power station protest (what on earth do they think we will use for power) through to the youngest of our school children who are fed unbalanced propaganda and as a result increasingly believe we are heading for a melt down of their world before properly entering it.
We need to counter these calls with good science, facts, reason, and not with hand waving or claims that are as equally suspect as the science we deride, as in turn they will get derided.
WUWT and others do a service in pointing out climate contradictions to a wider audience, but the people we really need to influence aren’t listening.

However, this thought does occur: if there is so much of this methane clathrate, why is no one exploiting it? I suspect a couple of zeroes have been added to the size estimate – helps to make the concept a lot more scary and that, of course, is a typical alarmist tactic.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the author purposely chose the 2012 date in order to coincide with the Mayan end of the world prophecy. Most of these “progressive” kooks are obsessed with ancient Mayan prophecies, Nostradamus predictions, Astrology charts, and Eastern mysticism. The religion of AGW ties into these themes rather handily.
Well, the great thing about this one is we can all relax. No need to limit emissions or worry about Kyoto or Copenhagen. This is either going to happen in two years or it is not, but in any case, there is nothing we can do about it now. I mean, even if we started some giant global cooling project to try to refreeze the permafrost, it would take us 10-20 years to get the stuff built and into place and powered on. By then we would all, or most of us, be dead of heatstroke.
It was really a great relief to understand from this article just how bad it really is, and just how powerless we really are. Yes, its all down to greed, but never mind, if it had been down to the Sermon on the Mount, the result would have been the same.
Enjoy it while we can, is the only sensible conclusion, if they are right.

Although the article in the Canadian is preposterous scaremongering, I wonder if it may actually help destroy the AGW Theory by contributing to Armageddon Fatigue in the populace. If Joe Public’s reaction to warmist hysteria is a little chuckle and a theatrical yawn, the politicians will eventually see warmism as a vote-loser. Currently, in our risk-averse culture, politicians would rather fritter away public resource on this great hoax than be seen to question the wisdom of windmills and carbon taxes.
This silly newspaper is using the Tipping Point argument (also known as the Positive Feedback argument and the Unstable Equilibrium argument). Of course it’s poppycock, but it has a grain of plausibleness. I guess that the notion of a Tipping Point is borrowed from marine engineering. Imagine the (mad) captain of a ferry announcing over the Tannoy: “Will passengers please refrain from congregating in large numbers at the starboard side.” Most passengers would shuffle to port, because the scare story has a grain of plausibleness. Only a minority would sneer, “I’m no marine engineer, and he is the captain, but this is undue alarmism and I’m going to ignore it”.
The assumption that climate is governed by unstable equilibrium needs to be debunked. The other major assumption – that greenhouse gases drive temperature vastly more than solar or volcanic activity – also needs debunking. Flip away these two cards and the entire AGW house of cards topples down. In the words of Alex in Clockwork Orange: “Let’s get ’em, boys!”

The ‘clathrate gun’ idea has been around for years. Not much has been seen of it since the mid 2000’s though. An irony is when BP tried their suction hood thing it immediately bogged up with clathrate crystals, caused by the methane reacting with the sea water, which suggests the ocean floor clathrate ice is pretty stable.

This is nothing compared to what the BBC showed last night on British TV. You must watch it. Persevere with the slow build up at the start, then be mesmerised by what you are being told.
As a precursor to their 3 week ‘Spring Watch’ programme, Chris Packham (one of their presenters) delivered a lengthy factual documentary lasting 60 minutes. Almost every other paragraph after the first 20 minutes included his strong belief on the ‘serious threat of man-made global warming’ and ‘with Springs now arriving much earlier’. My wife and I sat on the edge of our sofa venting our anger at this rediculous propaganda – especially as it’s still so cold outside in May!! We thought very highly of Chris Packham before this onsluaght – as we wholly agree with his views on conservation and pollution. We’ve enjoyed every episode of the BBC’s Spring Watch over the past years – but not any more. We’ve also bought every edition of the BBC’s ‘Countryfile’ magazine to date – but not any more. How could they waste licence fee payers money on this scaremongering rubbish.
We’re suprised none of Anthony’s UK followers haven’t already made everyone aware of this crazy programme.

Just checked an article at lecanadian, it has a 2010 copyright date. The linked site is likely abandoned. Reviewing the warning, it looks like the ad server put up something with malicious code, and if the site is no longer maintained then it could have easily been there long enough for Google to notice.

The methane in Siberian permafrost trope is a big chunk of that idiot book by Fred Pearce of New Scientist called “The Last Generation”. (I threw our copy in the recycling rather than give it away to Oxfam and let it terrify anyone else). If the world were going to turn to dust by 2012 and 4.5 billion people were going to die they had better start about…. NOW. Still it might save us spending all that money on the London Olympics.
Not a new idea. John Barnes used it in “Mother of Storms”, perhaps 10 years ago. IIRC, the plot was that an attack using non-radioactive heat emitters (what?) on a terrorist camp in the arctic releases megatons of methane into the atmosphere, then a massive rolling storm scours the earth until stopped by a genuine deus ex machina…

There must be some misprints in that article. Even the most extreme AGW hysterics know better than to say that Armageddon is barely 2 years away. John Stokes who wrote this piece is “co-managing editor” with Peggy Chang. “The Canadian” seems to be part of “Agora Cosmopolitan” based in Ottawa. Raymond Samuels of the “Cosmopolitan Party” has published all of his book through “Agora Cosmopolitan” The Cosmopolitan party claimed 600 members in 2004. This is interesting since “Agora Cosmopolitan” has international offices.

Clearly the lesson here is that if you are going to hypothesize the deaths of 4.5B people, you need to do it with at least a 5 year horizon and not a 2 year horizon. Because apparently if you do it with a 5 year horizon then people will just roll their eyes at you a little bit, whereas if you do it with a 2 year horizon everybody gets all excited and stuff.
But if you are trying to raise long-term funding for your university, you need to do it in 30 yr or more horizons, both to ensure a long-term funding stream but also to avoid any unhappy falisifiability issues that could also jeopardize your funding before you’ve milked ole Bessy dry.

Net result: We are heading into the deep deep brown stuff NOW and there’s nothing we can do NOW to stop it. So why do anything to fight it? Stock up the pantry and the armory, keep your family close, and wait for the Apocalypse to come about. You’ll be able to do something productive THEN.

The now much reviled NYT wasn’t reviled, for doing just that, in 2002, and nor was all the rest of the US and British media, which did exactly the same.

No, you do not know about my beliefs or faith. I think AWG is more likely than not to be real and serious. But, I make it a point to read Lindzen and other critics. I am not an expert in this field, but on balance the work done by the mainstream climatologists seems more persuasive. However, I am skeptical that we really can greatly reduce our GHG emissions. I’ll support cap-and-trade as something to try. I don’t think it will destroy the economy (I find conservative critics to be unduly alarmist), but it will hurt some sectors. I do not know if we will find economical replacements for coal and oil. We may have to learn to live in a warmer world; the scarifies we inflict on ourselves will likely be severe but I am sure we will survive. I am pro nuclear but against ethanol subsidies.
Your dismissive attitude toward those you disagree with might lead one to conjecture that you are a tad bit close minded. But, hopefully that is not true. Did you read the realclimate links I gave? I’ll repeat them:

The reality:
In 2004 we had seventeen days in May with temps above 90F, three at 98F, so far this year we have barely made it up to 91F a couple of times. Last week the low was 35F and currently it is a chilly 57F. I am in the sunny south (mid NC) for goodness sake, it snows here about for one day every five years. Of course this year it snowed 8 days including 3 days in March!

I think someone already mentioned this, but it’s worth repeating. A hypothesis is NOT a theory. There’s a reason we have two words and not one. Of course in common use the word ‘theory’ has come to mean ‘wild-a$$ guess’, thus the typical refrain of ‘it’s only a theory’.
well mike let’s keep in mind one thing. Even those on the side of global warming admit that it won’t amount to a hill of beans what we do. It’s not really the main focus. The main focus is cap and trade and they want money for their greening America campaign. If you don’t believe me look at the video of the most recent gathering of the Apollo Project.
Also keep in mind that they say currently we are pushing 30billion metric tonnes of co2 into the atmosphere which is 2ppm of the atmospheric gases. So that’s roughly 15 bmt ppm.
Like Steve said without feedback which the IPCC warmist’s seem to want to push higher and higher all the time the base warming is 1 degree C.
So since they think we’ll be pushing about 485 ppm co2 footprint in the next 100 years which supposedly will raise our temperature 7 degrees C but in all reality it will only be 1. So for a 1 degree C change in temperature it would take 33 years or more at 0% CO2 footprint to lower the temperature 1 degree.
No pray tell, where would you like to live for 33 years since no humans or animals or trucks or tractors, or planes, factories will be allowed on Earth with a 0% CO2 footprint.
The warmist’s are always talking about how bad the greenhouse effect is. Perhaps you could move to Mars where there is no greenhouse effect and it’s 120 at high noon and -140 at midnight.
