Former Apartheid Spy Appointed to Head UN Climate Change Effort

by Joel B. Pollak

IMG_0233

From BIGGOVERNMENT.com

This week, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, South Africa’s tourism minister, was nominated to head the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC). Van Schalkwyk is a former apartheid operative who bartered his way into the black majority government by helping it smear its democratic opposition. He is a statist bureaucrat who is one of the most unpopular political figures in the new South Africa. He is just right for the job.

There is no one better to put in charge of the entire political enterprise of climate change as it is collapsing amidst failed negotiations and accusations of fraud. Van Schalkwyk will be sure to hasten the end. He did the same when he took over the rump of South Africa’s National Party, the party of apartheid, and led it to crushing defeat. He gave up and joined the African National Congress (ANC) government in return for his ministry.

That was bad news for South Africans, as Van Schalkwyk encouraged other politicians to defect from the country’s leading opposition parties to join the corrupt and hegemonic  ANC. (An angry public began referring to those who crossed the floor for political favors as “crosstitutes.”) But it is good news for critics of the UN climate change bureaucracy, who now have a target who personifies everything there is to dislike about the system.

The worldwide “consensus” on climate change is unraveling amidst mounting evidence that the UN and senior scientists manipulated the data to suit their predictions of rapid warming and their prescriptions for drastic intervention in the global economy. It is, of course, true that carbon dioxide is a “greenhouse gas” that helps warm the earth; it is true that we have pumped more of it into the atmosphere since the industrial revolution.

It is also true that there is evidence of increasing average global surface temperatures over the same time period, and reason to believe that trend could continue over the next century. But it is also true that there are other factors affecting global climate, including some that reduce temperatures. And it is also true that our most sophisticated computer models cannot predict how warmer temperatures will affect our climate in the future.

That wasn’t good enough for those eager to create a sense of alarm. They projected worst-case scenarios and tried to convince the world that the potential costs of future warming far outweighed the costs of shutting down whole industries. They never explained whether climate change could actually be reversed; they did not need to, as long as they could scare people enough to avoid having to answer tough questions.

The UN has a long tradition of finding people who are so outrageously wrong for a position (or even gainful employment) that it can only be an attempt to demonstrate their ability to get away with anything. It’s like the kid who’s been left behind for three grades and now spends the lunch hour urinating on the smaller kids. He doesn’t really want or need to urinate on them; he just wants to remind himself and others that he can do it. (I was neither pee-er or pee-ee if you’re wondering).

I worked in South Africa for a couple of years, ten years ago. Van Schalkwyk was never taken seriously as anything but a politician who’ll do anything to have a government job of some kind (since he probably wouldn’t know what to do in the private sector). If South Africa’s ruling party, the ANC, recommended him for that UN position, it’s a sure sign that the South African government doesn’t think it’s of any importance. Van Schalkwyk is a guy they like to have around due to a vestigial political basis in the Western Cape, so they throw bones at him to keep him happy.

It’s a mystery why the U. N. would appoint somebody like van Schalkwyk except possibly there are those that think his appointment could swing some undeveloped countries because of his role in South Africa.
Although, that role as pointed out in the article is not a flattering one.

If you want to devalue and eventually undermine even further the IPCC this is a very astute choice by the UN’s political masters who are now embarressed to be associated with it, so lets diminish its status even further then we can ignore it.

9 March: Outside science academies to review warming panel
The beleaguered global warming panel has found an outside group to review how it makes its reports.
The InterAcademy Council will be given complete control to review the rules, procedures and reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Recently, a handful of unsettling, but relatively minor, errors have been found in the climate panel reports issued in 2007.
The Netherlands-based organization of 15 national science councils will pick the scientists for the review. Details will be announced Wednesday at the United Nations…

From the Guardian website:
“South African tourism minister nominated for top UN climate jobMarthinus van Schalkwyk is a candidate to take over from United Nations climate chief Yvo de Boer, who announced his resignation last month
The South African president’s office today announced the nomination of its tourism minister for the United Nations’ top climate post.
The office said Marthinus van Schalkwyk is a candidate to lead the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The current post holder, Yvo de Boer, announced his resignation in February and will step down on 1 July to take up a post with consultancy firm KPMG.
Van Schalkwyk was South Africa’s former minister for environmental affairs and tourism until May 2009, when the ministry was split. He succeeded former South African president FW de Klerk as leader of the National party in 1997 and presided over its dissolution and merger with the ruling African National Congress in 2005.
De Boer and others have stated that a binding global deal to tackle climate change will not be reached this year at the main annual UNFCCC event in December. That elevates the importance of the 2011 meeting, which will be held in South Africa, perhaps boosting van Schalkwyk’s chances.
But there will be other candidates. Reports from India suggest that the environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, is supporting the candidacy of environment secretary, Vijai Sharma, who is also said to have the support of China. Alongside Brazil, India, China and South Africa – also known as the Basic group of nations – were seen to be the key drivers behind the Copenhagen accord, the weak agreement that emerged from the last UN climate summit in December.
The appointment is made by the UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon, from a private shortlist, which he discusses with representatives from around the world.”
So nothing open and transparent about this appointment then – “private shortlist” is the worrying statement. Who released van Schalkwyk’s name?

You are correct. We here at WUWT forget CAGW is just one of three con jobs ripening at the same time and the United Nations and the World Bank have their sticky fingers in each.
First there is the world financial mess capped by the USA teetering on bankruptcy: First Obama doubled the US dollar supply – that Dodo bird has yet to come home to roost as runaway inflation. Then there is Congress’s spending spree making it “statistically impossible for the United States to pay its obligations” according to Stewart Dougherty, a specialist in inferential analysis. http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/08.09/metastasis.html
Second there is the attempted takeover of the world food supply – a very long and involved tale that most people totally ignore.

Talking of names – hot on the heels of Lord Christopher Monckton on his visit down-under came none other than Michael Oppenheimer and James Hansen to counter the Lord’s word. At whose invitation and cost I have no idea. The only difference was in the treatment by our tax funded public broadcaster, the ABC. Monckton was treated like the Romans and Jews dealing with Jesus. The other two were regaled like the Kings of Babylon.
This is a radio interview with Phillip Adams and Hansen. Adams is probably the biggest chardonnay sipping left wing idealist and smuggest commentator on the ABC:

“there is evidence of increasing average global surface temperatures over the same time period, and reason to believe that trend could continue over the next century”
There is no reason to believe that warming would continue for the next century. There is only if you pretend, wrongly, that all natural climate cycles and factors other than CO2 are cancelled. Of course, this is wrong.
Also, correlation does not mean causation. There are several scientific reasons that CO2 cannot drive the climate.
1) Beer’s Law indicates clearly that CO2’s heat-trapping effect (“greenhouse” is inappropriate and wrong) is largely exhausted (90-95%) and doubling it will have inconsequential effects, ignoring its huge greening of the world and added food production we so much need.
2) CO2 and absolute water vapor levels interact such that water vapor varies inversely to CO2 such that the heat-trapping effect is a constant. Voila! CO2 is inconsequential/irrelevant to our climate. See the work of Miskolczi and Zagoni in the atmospheric heat flux, CO2 and water vapor. Its an eye-opener and a very recent development in the last 5 years.

If anyone doubts the UN’s competency, then they should recall this:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/evil/warning/
The UN was informed ahead of time about the possibility of a Hutu extermination of Tutsis, and chose instead to have the informant who was trying to stop the bloodshed report the planned genocide to the President of Rwanda, who was in the group planning it. This is equivalent to the FBI sending a mob informant to his Don to report a crime.
And we are supposed to trust people this incompetent because….?

Andrew30

Charles Higley (19:24:24) :
1) Beer’s Law indicates clearly that if you can pour a Guinness without a head in less than 60 seconds, then the Guinness contains no CO2.
2) Its an eye-opener that Miskolczi and Zagoni will drink it anyway for its heat-trapping effect.

Dave F
March 9, 2010 9:13 pm

We are, by the way, talking about a genocide event that cost up to 1,000,000 people their lives over a 100 day span. The general estimate is 500,000-1,000,000, but a range that large generally tells me that no one has a clue how many other than a very large number. Still, if we take the low end of this estimate, that is 3.5 people slaughtered per minute. We are talking about women and children involved also.
Thanks UN, for being there when we needed you!

From the South African publication Financial Mail, 18 October 2002 –
[note: kortbroek – definition – In [Afrikaans], means “shorty.” It is the nickname for the spineless rat Marthinus Van Schalkwyk.]
True to his “Kortbroek” nickname, NNP leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk was spotted behaving like a child at Cape Town International airport last Thursday.
Fellow passengers in the VIP lounge say Kortbroek sent a series of minders to insist he be given a row of business class seats to himself on a scheduled flight to Johannesburg. Airline staff tried to explain that business class was full, but the minders insisted someone give up their seat. Van Schalkwyk was too important to have someone sitting next to him, they said.
Finally, when the chief minder growled: “My boss says you will do as he wants,” he was met with the reply: “My boss is not your boss.”

Dave F
March 9, 2010 9:17 pm

Also, in the vein of the Rwandan debacle for the UN, what is the UN’s purpose? Well, according to Chapter 1, Article 1, Section 1, it is to:
“To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace.”

He is very unpopular in SA, and I think he will make himself unpopular no matter where he goes.

I live in South Africa and can tell you first hand that van Schalkwyk doesn’t have 2 brain cells to rub together. He predicted 3 years that Western Cape, where I live, would be drier with immediate effect and that all the farmers in the area needed to move east where the rain belt would move because of AGW. Ever since then we have had 3 of the wettest winters in recent years, the dams are full, and the farmers are smiling. The location east of us that van Schalkwyk pinpointed as the agricultural center has been struck with drought. He got it wrong all the around. The only reason the South African regime is pushing this cause is because they are holding the begging bowl out once again. What will the masses here say when they finally learn that the government that promised them everything under the sun is now trying to withhold electricity and further development all because of some bogus cause?

Yes, that makes sense. Take a harmless trace gas / plant food and convert it into an extremely toxic gas using an undisclosed amount of energy.
Then, in turn, you can generate electricity or hydrogen using the CO.
End product of the latter process? Why, a harmless trace gas (CO2) which also

I have just read this astonishing piece by Monbiot
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cif-green/2010/mar/08/belief-in-climate-change-science
He seems to be having some sort of hysterical episode and asking what it would take to make skeptics believe is just absurd. He surely knows that all we want is some unequivocal scientific proof that . . .
1. The climate is indeed changing by getting warmer.
2. That CO2 is causing this warming.
3. That man made contributions to the atmospheric CO2 content are important.
4. That reducing man made CO2 will result in a beneficial change to our climate.
So far, and I have read a huge amount on both sides of these arguments, there has been nothing of any “solid” nature that does these things. Not for me ,because I am just a dilettante and an amateur, but for those big brains who are able to analyze and understand the claims and then dismantle them effectively and convincingly.
His “woe , woe” the poor scientists are misunderstood is just BS. I understand the folk here at WUWT and elsewhere and their analysis seems very accessible while the waffle and flannel on RealClimate and AR4 and all those places is just insubstantial and lightweight.
I know that this has been a long battle, 20 years or more now, but surely these “pharisees” can be stopped now. They are being backed by politicians , who while being powerful , are just there by the grace and favor of us the electorate.

Slightly OT but some classic sitting on the fence, circling of wagons, politically correct comments and leading from behind. You can hear the body language especially at 6:00 into this interview this morning with Sir Martin Rees, President of the FRS in UK when asked about leadership of IPCC.

re Martyn (01.24)
Neither appointed or annointed. Nominated as a potential appointee is the correct situation.
Therefore, the headline is misleading.

On a related seperate subject, the more I hear and see of the UN the less I appreciate them. Must have something to do with over exposure. But, thanks to the UN and what they’ve taught me, I now know why we had Crusades, Inquisitions, a Revolution, Civil War, WWI, WWII, VNW, AGW, etc., people aren’t –and never have been– very smart. Think I’m wrong? Think there’s hope for us and our future in the younger generation? Watch what they watch on ‘reality tv’ for 5 minutes. Don’t you wish we only had to pay for the TV channels we actually watch, instead of subsidizing 231 channels full of garbage that we never watch.

Reading the comments posted on this article is quite humorous. Folks who clearly don’t live in SA are trying to paint this man as a crazy “global governance” monster.
It’s no conspiracy, government just wants to get rid of him.
He is a joke here in SA, no one ever has or ever will take him seriously.
Government is just trying to look like it is making an effort with this climate change nonsense.
If vS becomes head of the CC efforts, the “action” will all happen in “African time” as we call it here… “Maybe tomorrow, maybe next year, maybe never. Who cares, have a drink!”
Interesting too how the foreign media has been ripping president Zuma and the world cup preparation here… We’re not worried, see you all in 90 days 😉

OT, but from the same link, BIGGOVERNMENT.com it appears the latest climate bile, (or bill, if you prefer) sponsored by Sens. John Kerry, Lindsey Graham, and Joe Lieberman will be using the carrot-and-stick approach to try to get-er-done: http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9EBERA01&show_article=1 featuring (sticks): 1) Carbon caps for power producers becoming more stringent with time, 2) Possible tax on motor fuel 3) Industry exempted for now, but phasing in caps in a few years and (carrots) 1) Expanding oil and gas drilling offshore, and 2) Fed. assistance for nuclear power plants, as well as CCS projects.
“Only when you marry up climate change—cleaning up the air—with energy independence do you get” to 60 votes in the Senate, he said.
“If you’re a Republican, and you believe we should ‘drill, baby, drill,’ now’s your chance,” Graham said. ”
God, I hope the Republicans are smart enough not to fall for this.

“You WILL believe in global warming!” (*sound of arms being twisted until they break*). Lovely, just lovely…where did they find this clown, central casting??
Yes. If you’re making horror films – you must cast a worthy villain.
But the UN is serious about fixing their global warming troubles:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article7055999.ece
They will conduct an thorough investigation of their errors – not of their integrity.

You tell me why is it so that these global warmers share such a variety of beliefs ranging from “The day after pill” advocacy, through “minorities rights” defense (pedophils included), Malthusianism (disapperance of nasty third world browns and blacks), DDT banning for diminishing black and brown populations, AH1N1 vaccination, to control “tea baggers” insurgence and provoking teratogenesis, “civil society” participation in governments (voters usually don’t like them so they choose them in formal elections), gay marriage, income redistribution, etc, etc.and why all these beliefs are propagandized by the United Nations?

Stop whinging you lot. You know that the UN is a corrupt organisation. So many of our so called political leaders are just as corrupt. Organisations like the UN and the European Union cater for the lifestyle of their senior executives. So what are you going to do about it? In the West, you can join a political party and make your voice heard. This is the only way. The internet is at your disposal to recruit like minded people. To get rid of these shysters is going to be a bottom up movement. The sad truth is that if it doesn’t effect most people directly, so then most people won’t care. Why? Because they have other problems to deal with – salary, mortgage, the kids and next years holiday. But one day, it will effect them, not least through their tax. At that point you might find you have willing recruits for your cause. But I am not hopeful. We are sleepwalking into the 4th Reich.
