One newspaper is making the most of this “first ever event”, according to a story in the UK Register:
The Times has liberally papered London underground carriages with a fascinating new ad campaign. One poster shows a ship navigating some treacherous icy waters, with the accompanying copy reading:
Climate change has allowed the Northeast Passage to be used as a commercial shipping route for the first time.

In fact it wasn’t, and now the Times has been forced to recant:

An advertising campaign touting the depth and quality of the Times newspaper’s environment coverage has been slapped by an industry watchdog for inaccuracy. The paper has agreed to modify the advertisements, which are based on a false climate change claim.
The Times ads claimed that global warming had caused the North East shipping passage, the icy Arctic route which in summer links Russia’s European ports to the Bering Strait, to be opened for the first time. In fact, the North East Passage opened in 1934, and was opened to overseas traffic after the fall of the Soviet Union. Modern technology, specifically radar, has permitted a safer passage in recent years.

It goes to show: there are lies, damn lies and the anthropocentric climate change concensus.
I was one of those who forwarded complaints to the ASA. The article in “The Register” agrees with the reply I have received from ASA detailing the amendment the Times is required to make.
Frankly, this is no more than a linguistic fudge. The “retraction” is simply a rewording to say that the global warming has made the NE passage MORE accessible. Notice the addition of that one little word. Yet they have not retracted the basic AGW alarmism.
Regrettably they have been able to wriggle off the hook with a duplicitous manipulation of words. I now wait eagerly for the “big” complaint – against the UK goverments propaganda campaign.
I was one of the 29 complainants.
The recantation is obviously unacceptable, since it still maintains that ‘climate change’ is a factor in opening the NE passage, when in fact political and technological alterations have achieved this.
What I noticed about the letter they sent back to me was the requirement to ‘keep this finding confidential’. I am still wondering why this was required……

We knew that about 2 days after they printed the bogus story.
The 2 commericial German ships were led by 2 nuclear-powered ice-breakers delivering heavy machinery to E. Siberia, and the only thing special about it was that Russia now escorts ships of foreigners.
All stories like that do is lend a false-sense of warming security.
And Polar Bears don’t wear sunglasses and drink Coke to cool off.

I used to find the Times one of the UK’s better papers, but of recent years it seems to have lost the plot! In it’s own way it has become even worse than the Sun, for pushing political agenda.
Best paper for a reasonable balanced view of the news in 2009 was the Telegraph – lets hope they keep up the good work in 2010.

I would like to see a UK law passed that required the retraction of any dubious headline to be printed in the same font/type size as the original and on the same page, not hidden away [usually in 9 pt or less!] amongst pages of ads that no one reads.

Great result! I was one of those who sent a complaint to The Times at the time reminding them that Russia had been using the North East Passage for seventy years (prompted by the article I saw here).

It’s not just this mendacious advertising campaign, it’s the rock-bottom quality of research you get from so-called quality newspapers (and the agencies) these days.
I lost count of the number of press articles that described the world’s most powerful ice-breaker – 50 лет Победы – as a merchant ship… Trouble is, it’s hard to figure out which journos are just incompetent and which set out deliberately to deceive…
In answer to my question, the Wikipedia Northeast Passage article does confirm commercial use of the NEP from 1935 to the end of the Soviet era. Wiki isn’t authoritative, but at least this is a start.

I’m sure the London Times new before publication that the NE Passage story was a bit off. Journalists are trained to check statements such as first time. But then alarm sells newspapers not normalcy. They are playing with fire though (pun intended) as I have highlighted in an example below.

You might want to correct the title of this piece. There is no such newspaper as the ‘London Times’. The paper is called ‘The Times’, and is published nationally in the UK, not just in London.

Coincidence: I was just looking through a 30-year old atlas last night and I remember seeing the NE Passage plotted on the map of the polar region.
I guess there would not be a reason for plotting a route that did not come into existence until 2010…

Why is that people who claim to love the earth so much know so little about it’s natural history? The arctic has warmed and cooled many times in the last few centuries.
Do these people not know the world existed before they were born? Are these people aware the world has changed, is changing and will always be changing? I thought the belief in a steady-state universe was unscientific.

The politicians of all major parties are pretty much of one mind. Note the almost complete lack of dissent over the Climate Change Bill.
The public and some of the MSM are increasingly sceptical. When the heating bills for the current bout of global warming come in, they’ll be even more sceptical. Still, to say it will be all but dead in two weeks is, very optimistic in view of the amount of political capital sunk into the scam and the political consensus. And then of course, much of the UK’s stance on measures to combat AGW ties in with EU policy, which our idiots have been pushing.
So the Times is also part of the AGW scam. Hitler would have been proud of this propaganda conspiracy. Will the lies ever end? Ironic isn’t it that the BBC report enthusiastically on the big freeze without ever once mentioning climate change.

That part went straight off to my MP with a request to find out if it has become standard practice in government departments to suppress any news about complaints. No response yet.
I urge others who have received this letter to do the same – this looks like a point where the ASA are vulnerable, and official secrecy is probably a bigger story than a mis-claimed advert….
The SS Manhattan made the trip in 1969. An oil tanker made the NORTHWEST passage.
The snow record that was broken here in Burlington, VT had stood for 40 years. The previous record snowstorm lasted 3 days while the recent storm dropped its 33″ in just a few hours. Yikes!

This story was run by the BBC News Online some weeks ago. Some astute watcher pointed out the error of the story & it soon dropped from view. Presumabley the Times didn’t research it much beforehand, either that or they played the panto season, they know it’s a lie but published it anyway, or if not, they didn’t check their facts, it’s either fraudulence or incompetence either way!

For the sake of simplicity I assume journos are both incompetent and deliberately deceiving. That’s why the lamestream media is off the menu.
On one of the fact-oriented cable TV channels was an hour-long show about the construction of a cargo ship. I don’t remember the name of the ship, but it was a cargo ship designed to work in ice. Whether it was destined to the NE passage or not, it does indicate that technological changes include the ships and are not limited to what is attached to the ships.
Last month (December) someone asked me about global warming, and I expressed by doubts.
They asked how I felt about the northern passages being open for the first time ever.
I asked him two questions.
1. Why would they be called passages if they had never been open in the past.
2. Do you really think it’s still open now, in December, or do you think it was merely open for several weeks during the summer melt?
I received a blank look that lasted for several minutes.
I just saw on the news that London is getting slammed by global warming, with lots of it on the ground and many businesses shut down. The southern USA has had prolonged cold that is threatening crops. If we don’t hurry up and do something about this global warming problem we are going to freeze and starve to death! Brrrrr!

Recanting doesn’t matter. They accomplished what they wanted. The idea is now firmly planted in the minds of the public that ‘global warming opened the NE passage’ regardless if it is true or not. This is just like a trial lawyer working a false statement into his questioning, even if the Judge instructs the jury to ‘disregard’ the statement, it still has an effect.

There have been several other AGW-related complaints processed by the ASA in recent months. One is about the Bedtime Stories ad, which is still being investigated. So our complaints do have an impact; let’s keep it up.
Re contacting MPs, I’d also suggest contacting local prospective Parlimentary candidates, especially the Conservatives. They’re still the most likely to be forming the next government, but are facing a mass desertion to UKIP by their voters upon the issue of Britain’s continuing EU membership, and perhaps also AGW. Enough dissenting voices and Conservative High Command may take the hint and start to listen.
This is a good analogy for how AGW theory consensus is achieved.
False information is put out there by media, shady science or Al Gore documentaries, it is accepted as factual by the lay public who then continues to disseminate this information long after it has been shown to be flawed or “recanted.”
Sadly, as in other cases, what will be remembered out of this is the incorrect ststatement presented in the ad.
It seems to me that once something is in the newspapers, the info presented gets into the public mind much more than a story recant. I used the story of the passage from the 1930’s in my class without telling students that it was from 1934. (Thanks to WUWT.) I asked whether or not this would lead them to believe in global warming. It was quite a shock to them that the article was from 1934. But it is something they will not soon forget.

From the story I read two days ago they were assisted by two nuclear-powered icebreakers, not one. Other points:
All these Beluga company vessels were built specially reinforced against ice. They thus, presumably, cost more than ordinary vessels and have less cargo capacity.
It would be risky to have sent ordinary vessels through the route in company with them currently, since ordinary hulls and propellers would likely get dented and dinged by small ice debris left in the wake of an icebreaker.
The two Beluga vessels that transited the Passage made their voyage because they were delivering heavy equipment from a manufacturer in Asia to a Siberian port. They then continued westwards to their homeport in Europe. They were not doing so because the NE passage to Europe is shorter and more economical.
They had to wait in port in Asia (paying crew’s wages and port fees) for weeks before they got the green light from the Russians that the coast was the clearest it was going to get, and that their icebreakers were available. And speed was reduced during the portion of the voyage that required the icebreakers to clear a path ahead. These factors mean the route is not nearly economical yet for ordinary shipping.
The Passage will only be as open as it was for a couple of weeks. Thereafter traversal will get harder. There’s only a brief open window at present.
The BBC story didn’t mention that arctic ice extent has risen over the last two years. It spoke exclusively of a declining long-term trend and implied, by the choice of persons it quoted, that ice extent would continue to retreat until the Passage is open year-round:
“The steady rise in temperatures over the last 20 years has seen the ice thin and retreat substantially. This means that the passage may soon become navigable for most of the year. Dr Peter Wadhams, of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, UK, said that the long sought dream of a North East shipping route “could become reality in as little as 10 years time”. … Dr Wadhams said that satellite images showed arctic sea ice receding towards the North Pole at a rate of 5% per decade.”

If you could select any part of the UK for a good slammin’ you couldn’t do better than London, the seat of parliament. It might focus a few minds on a thorny little matter of energy policy, now that OfGen admit they got their costing figures wrong in an earlier report. Apparently they “only” predicted a doubling of energy costs by 2020, to £2,000 per household. They have now acknowledged that the true figure will be closer to £5,000.
No doubt Brown will remain firm, pacing the cabinet office, shouting orders to “shoot all deserters and saboteurs.”

Somebody smart with video making should have reproduced the ASA polar bear ad, but with one falling polar bear for each person who traveled to copenhagen, at the end showing many square miles of polar bear several feet deep.
As AGW vanishes into the dust bin of history, I wonder if stations like the discovery channel will go bankrupt. They have thousands of wonderful programs, but at the end of each and every program, no matter what the subject matter of the program is they always have the last 5 minutes dedicated to how global warming is destroying whatever it is the show was about. They will have to pay an army of people to edit out the last 5 minutes of every program.

Last weekend there was a bad storm over the Canadian maritimes and a storm surge did heavy damage to seaside cottages in northeastern New Brunswick. On Canadian news Global TV news, the Kevin Neuman news report, Kevin reported the surge was a result of rising sea levels from the melting Arctic.

We all make mistakes and it is to the Times credit that it will issue a correction.
I have sent the letter below to the Daily Telegraph twice. I did receive a response from an assistant editor who gave me the address of Geoffrey Lean, the environmental correspondent. I still have not received a reply from him or seen a published retraction. If what if i am stating is wrong he should let me know but if he is is in error in stating that Arrhenius confirmed the wildest predictions of the IPCC then a correction is certainly warranted otherwise his views are destined for the annals of jokipedia.

It would appear that I was amongst friends when I complained to the ASA about the advert being promulgated by The Times. I did so solely because of what I’d read here on WUWT. I, too, received a letter stating that my complaint had been investigated and had subsequently been informally resolved, with the ‘request’ that I keep this matter ‘confidential’.
I have now begun to write to not only the ASA but also MPs and other responsible bodies about untruths and outright lies made about AGW by various ‘spokespersons’. Is there anyway I can post on WUWT scans of the fatuous replies which I am expecting for the delectation of all?

It would be quite easy to take all the Warmists to the Tower because virtually all of them are editors or journalists on the national newspapers based just up the road in Wapping. A couple of London double decker buses should be enough to complete the task in about 45 minutes.
I can assure you that the vast majority of the populous in the UK is sitting back and laughing at these journo’s spouting BS day in day out. They have dug themselves such a deep hole promoting AGW over the last ten years they cannot see the light. But one by one they are slowly putting their hands up and sowing the white flag. The Daily Express flipped from alarmist to skeptic last year along with some high profile journalists on the broadsheets.
But please be assured that out in the real world, and out of the chattering suburbs of London, people can see right through the con. As ever the MSM will have to reflect that in their editorial even though they will tell us they saw the light and led us to it.

Some facts about the North West Passage.
I am responding to some ignorant claims about the supposed first passage of ships through the passage last year. Someone has obviously missed the boat.
In recent times Roald Amunsden, the Nowegian, traversed it in 1903 (almost 100 years ago) in his little ship, Gjoa. The Gjoa was no icebreaker.
The Canadians put ships through during the 2nd World War.
In 1969 an oil tanker passed through
In about 1817, Edward Parry almost made it in a sailing ship, but was stopped by pack ice which was blown around by the wind and blocked his passage. In 1817 the passage had not been surveyed so Parry never knew how close he had come to being successful.

The Northwest Passage hasn’t opened to commercial shipping at all. The ships travelling from Europe to East Asia still use the Gibraltar and the Suez Canal routes. Some non-urgent cargo are still taken through the Cape of Good Hope even in order to either save money on the Suez Canal fees or to divert the the cargo elsewhere, should a new buyer make any offer.
Two specially built cargo ships moving through the Northwest Passage with the aid of two Russian nuclear ice-breakers can only be ‘proof of concept’. There is no commercial shipping through the passage even durign the best of summer times.
Where do they think the Soviet Great Northern Fleet was based out of?

I work in multimedia so unfortunately I am not involved in any part of what goes in to newspaper articles. If I were a journalist or an editor I would certainly take a stand and encourage everyone at The Times to do so because otherwise we’ll be a laughing stock soon, readership will plunge with the temperatures and taxes, and Mr Murdoch won’t be too proud either. At least his Fox News channel has the balls to question today’s eco-Mathusian socialist movement (which if you read Spiked today is quite heavily steeped in elitist conservatism)

Yes, and the North East Passage has indeed been traversed in earlier times. According to the Columbia Encyclopaedia it was first traversed in 1878-79, by a Swede, Nordenskjold. Roald Amunsden also did it 1918-20
