Yes but I can hear the “peer-reviewers” on these issues saying already:
“Blogs” are not Scientific” [in the vein of the “Weather is not Climate” pile of straw-crap that is shaped like a man].
I defy anyone to be able to produce a science blog [and this, for a blog, is hard to do] which tries to incorporate the free-thinking checks and balances of the Scientific Method any ******* better than WUWT!
Yeah sure you have the likes of Duke University researcher and congressional science researcher Sheril Kirshenbaum, co-author of Unscientific America talking down her nose on NPR a few months back, aghast, that the best voted scientific blog in 2009 was “WattsUpWithThat” a [in her words] “climate-change-denialist blog.”
But Sheril is all too typical of their ilk: Elitists who, instead of debating the facts…..make cheap-shots like that one on national radio, and then retreat into their ivory towers [holes], free from real debate and consequence.
Of the ten (10) emails I have sent her, calling her to task and also critisizing her book, she has never ever responded, once!
Very, very telling.
Sorry….I digress. The great thing about the success of WUWT, besides being an unbelievable roster and clearinghouse for so many great minds, scientists, engineers, physicists, and laypeople, from around the world…is that it continues to broadcast unabated, and without compromise….the search for the truth.

Also, if you notice the blade part of your hockey stick, it definitely started ramping up prior to the UEA-CRU leak.
I believe 2007 was the year the wheels started vibrating on the cAGW wagon, 2008 they started wobbling, and 2009 one of them fell off. Here’s hoping that 2010 sees another one or two of those wheels break away.

Yes, Happy new year. (Why not celebrate by naming your very own number at the Gazillion Project?)
A new decade? Obviously. we can make an arbitrary beginning of a ten-year period anywhere we like, and any day of the year is the the tenth anniversary of the day ten years ago, but do we normally start counting things by starting at zero? I tried this with my sons, by asking them to count to ten: both started at 1 and finished at 10, rather than starting at 0 and finishing at 9.
Last year was certainly the tenth year of the 2000s but this year is the last year of the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Of course no one is questioning the clear correlation between the popularity of WUWT and world surface temps – and no one is questioning the obvious implication that WUWT popularity is the main driver of climate. But we have a divergence problem now. Observed temps have remained static (or cooled slightly) for several years, and WUWT popularity is skyrocketing.
I can’t explain that, and it’s a travesty that I can’t.

Thanks to a very practical chemical engineering father, who taught us to question, question, question, I didn’t simply buy into the AGW meme when results seemed to give it the lie. When I make environmentally friendly decisions and implement them it will be because I can see the economic benefits (economics major here) and not because of any scare tactics which are thrust at me.
Until I stumbled across WUWT I felt like I was drowning in a sea of either too technical or overly simplistic explanations which did not satisfy me.
I’ve found a home here and pop in every day for my ‘fix’. Joe Bastardi’s http://www.AccuWeather.com is another favourite. Thank you from a warm and wet South Africa.

I started visiting WUWT when Andrew Bolt began linking, because at that point there were very few public places where information on climate was being laid out in a scientific manner, to encourage readers to question orthodoxy, as science and logic always should.
My wish for you and your many supporters in science and the public domain in 2010 is to succeed in having Algore, Pachauri and the IPPC stripped of the Nobel prize , and for them to be prosecuted for international fraud, along with certain multinational financial institutions.

Next January will mark the start of the second decade of the 21st century.

I don’t know – please show me the raw data (i.e. calendars produced in 1 BC and the subsequent year). I for one am really tired of seeing processed calendar data. Leap seconds and leap days are bad enough, but something like the adoption of the the Gregorian calendar must not be allowed to recur.
I’d also like souvenir editions of year 0 for the Chinese and Jewish calendars.

I know I’m indulging my perverse delight in acting the contrarian, but 2010 is not, sensu strictu, the first year of the second decade of the 21st c. Since the 21st c. (and the third Christian millennium) began on January 1 2001, 2010 is the last year of the first decade.
The problem arises from the fact that in the seventh century, when the monk Denys the Diminutive developed a dating system centered on his estimation of the year of the birth of Jesus, Europeans were half a millennium away from learning the ‘Arabic’ (actually Indian) system of numeration with its marvelous invention of zero (Indian philosophy, in contrast with the Greek, seems to have be much less terrified about the concept of ‘nothing’). Denys counted the year of the birth of Jesus as the year 1; therefore the year 10 was the tenth year of the first decade.
It’s more confusing when one tries to get this across using Arabic numbers.
Roman numerals make it clearer: from I to X is ten: XI is the first year of the second decadal cycle.
This year is MMX. Next year will be MMXI

this site is a beacon in the darkness.
Wayne and others. I just had a walk out the 1st fairway in Carnoustie – about 300 yards (where my drive would land). It is pure perma frost. The courses shut now for 3 weeks. The longest closure in my 30 years playing here.
Am reduced to playing golf on the computer.
A happy and prosperous 2010 to all and hope the hockey stick blade just gets longer.

I have been able to locate no other site which is free of political bias, replete with scholarly references, and packed solid with the detail necessary to refute the dominant paradigm.
I have a strong bias here: if a theory is not subject to verification and possible falsification, that theory is not scientific.
The documented fact that the FOIA requests to CRU have been rejected, and the raw data never made available, is in itself probable cause to suspect the result.
Far from being settled, the science is not science.
The unfortunate truth is that the behavior of the thin film which we call our atmosphere is poorly understood, and the tools necessary to study the film are still in their infancy.
Please do not stop now, wattsupwiththat. We need your continued active documentation and reporting.

The animals began to leave at the end of November. There were more than 1,500 at the dock only five weeks ago, but yesterday only about 20 lounged in a distant corner of the dock…………
Their departure is a mystery. Among the more speculative theories is that it is linked to an imminent earthquake. Some point out that the sea lions began “hauling out” at K dock directly after the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989. By January 1990, the population had reached 150 and within a few months hundreds had returned.

Impressive. But I would like to know how WUWT intends to deal with the CHIE?? Computer Heat Island Effect has seen a steep rise due in part to the increased number of hours spent at online sites such as WattsUp. Not only has this put potentially catastrophic demands on the global grid – it has raised the quantifiable global CHIE T.
While we cannot argue with success, we would like to know what precautions WUWT is taking to contain this growing issue?? Hockey sticks don’t lie. The evidence is right there at the top of this post.
Just how happy can a new year be with this hanging over our heads?

This really is an astounding phenomenon and it the ultimate demonstration, today, of how the Internet has enabled a massive real time participation in analysis and dialogue worldwide.
And make no mistake about it the level of disdain for it all by the team has increased proportionately. Their hate hockey stick is identical.

Perhaps the Team gave it the peer review treatment and merely stopped it from being overrun by the anti-science cabal?

It would be nice if WUWT won the Weblog Awards, but not essential. If it doesn’t, it would merely reflect that the Weblog Awards have gone the route of the Academy Awards: i.e. lost touch with reality and the will of the people due to political correctness. The failure to get more richly-deserved recognition would not diminish the importance of this site or the superiority of most of its contributors (I do not include myself in this superior category – I am in awe of the swift and decisive analytical criticism of bogus science that I see from those who post here).
A question: could Richard North get around British libel laws by publishing on an American website? What a diabolical government the Brits have saddled themselves with: I think they took a look at Jean Chretien’s Canada (Trudeaupean Charter of Human Rights) and figured out how to one-up the Canadian political correctness quotient. I used to think that the Brits had too much common sense to let the wool be pulled over their eyes.

I’m another who has become a regular since Climategate broke. It’s almost as much fun here as having sex. Turn the proud hockey stick hit stats 90 degrees clockwise… kinda symbolic.
Looks like RC’s beginning to flag. No bad thing, as AGW’s been shafting so many for so long, but now no amount of manipulation seems to be able to raise it from what is surely an incipient and insipid decline.

Congratulations to Anthony and all of his moderators. Someone earlier said that you were helping us scale a mountain. I think that you are creating a mountain, and not out of a mole hill either, but one that will eventually overshadow the opposition. Keep up the great work everyone.
Meanwhile down here in the SW corner of the big pond, a.k.a. the Pacific, this so-called mild El Nino is still ripping at the roofing irons and rattling the window panes of my 100 year old house. A new year ( but not decade) may have started but us west coasters in N.Z. are still waiting for summer to start.
2010 is shaping as a very interesting year on many fronts. The best seats in the house to watch from are right here at Watts Up With That, as nearly 4.9 million hits can testify.

Perhaps JC could refer to that great bastion of scientific knowledge – yes .. wiki! Wiki has a good discussion about the millennium http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millenium and concepts of ordinal and cardinal time. It also refers to ISO 8601:2004 Data elements and interchange formats – Information interchange – Representation of dates and times. http://www.iso.org/iso/date_and_time_format
So the scientific explanation of “whatever” is “in accordance with ISO 8601:2004” in line with the international reach of WUWT. I will give the mods latitude here. Not all blogs have moderators that also perform volunteer diaper service.

People in general, along with the Team and MSM ,should consider what the collective expertise and analysis these numbers represent.
Considering these numbers and the crossover from CA and others this is by far the largest scientific analysis and discussion in the the history of mankind.
The ultimate check and balance now exists.
The level of diverse expert scrutiny now being applied to claims by our institutions has greatly constrained their ability to distort and manipulate.
What I look forward to are consequences for those who do so.
I see the unraveling of the AGW movement leading to warmers claiming they were only going with best science and practices at the time while many claim they were only following orders.
A familiar chain of excuses for participants in scandals throughout history.
And like previous events the more hardcore offenders are still engaged in widening their [ alleged…(no body is convicted, yet.) -mod] crimes.
Their futile attempt to preserve the movement by adding even more layers of phony science and alarm is only adding to their infamy.

A decade is a 10 year period. If it starts at ’10 or ’11 doesn’t mean anything. It’s still a decade. A new decade will even start at ’12 and end at ’21.
You can do the math of this at home. Don’t worry, you won’t get hurt.

You may not be far from the truth. Hockey stick graphs are nothing new in business projections. Some businesses use them to try to convince people to invest in their company with the promise of profit projected in the hockey stick graph.

@Craigo: The link to the Wiki was interesting, thanks. However, I didn’t see anything on the ISO page defining terms such as “millenium”, “century” or even “decade”. On the contrary, they specifically said:
“ISO 8601 does not specify the exact meaning of its representations. […] Users of the standard must agree on a more exact interpretation of the representation if this is relevant.”
Yet quite frankly, I have to say I’m with JC on this… Given the context of WUWT, I find it amusing that Anthony recognizes the dilemna yet still opts for the “popular” side instead of the “technically correct” one. Maybe that’s what happens when you start displaying hockey sticks? 🙂
I personally tend to directly specify the decade I’m talking/writing about (e.g. “the 1995-2004 decade”), when I’m using the word “decade” in its very general form (i.e. meaning an arbitrary period of ten years). When using the technical term (with no specified range), I indeed expect it to go between xxx1 and yyy0.
In any case, I’m raising my glass to this new year and I wish WUWT plenty of new readers and lots of exposure!

If I am reading that graphic properly, it is displaying not the “numbers of readers” (of a web site) dsiplayed against time but rather the (log of the) relative ranking of the chosen web site displayed over time: That is, WUWT rose to (about) the world’s 12,000 most popular web site, and has remained at about that level,. Google is probably nbr one.
RC rose (briefly) up to the number 20,000 most popular site, then dropped rapidly down towards the number “100,000 most popular site” and continues to plummet.

Exactly right, if you use the word without parameters then it is meaningless. Any year is the start of a new decade. In this context we are talking about the calendar and that defines the parameters. To me this argument is silly. If you want to call this year the start of a new decade, by all means go ahead you only display your ignorance. More surprising and disapointing to me is the response I got from our host. Seems his reaction was more appropriate to RC than what I am accustomed to at WUWT. I have always had great admiration for Anthony and have recommended WUWT to many who were in search of a forum that was both informative and fair but now I have to re-think.

I agree with you on this. Unless you’re using the general (and therefore meaningless) definition of “decade”, a decade always ends on December 31 of a year ending with zero. The first year was 1 AD, not 0. And therefore the first decade ended at the end of 10 AD, and all subsequent decades ended an exact multiple of 10 years later.
(Of course, all of this is kinda ridiculous anyway, since it is now known that the guy who came up with the Gregorian calendar miscalculated the time of Jesus’s birth (the dividing line between BC and AD) by 4 years. So we are actually now in the first month of either 2006 or 2014 (I can’t remember which way the guy erred), nowhere near the end of a decade either way.)
Though you are correct on the “decade” issue, I think you went about this the wrong way. You see, I think Anthony 1) doesn’t get some types of humor very well, and 2) has very thin skin. So when you (even in jest) insult him, he gets bent out of shape and lashes out. I made the same mistake recently (see the comments on EcoSpy vs EcoSpy). But I will say this for Anthony – at least he allows the comments that are critical of him and the skeptic side of the AGW debate, which is more than we can say for RealClimate, or any other blog on the alarmist side.
And I’m not going to hold it against him that he was wrong on something like this, nor that he attacked someone for saying he was wrong on something that doesn’t really matter. Anthony Watts is a genius, and has done a great deal to help expose this global warming hoax. When everything is said and done, and AGW is completely discredited, if we were to erect a Mount-Rushmore-style monument to those who were the greatest heroes in skeptic triumph, Watts’s face would be right there, along with Monckton, McIntyre, and a big question mark for the unknown Hadley CRU hacker/whistleblower. (Please, I do not wish to discredit such great skeptic heroes as Spencer, Inhoffe, Avery, and many others, but my Mt. Rushmore analogy allowed for only four people.) So do what you must, JC, but I will continue to read WUWT (and try not to p!ss Anthony off again).
