Snowstorm squelches climate change protest

A downtown [Salt Lake City] protest of the climate change talks in Copenhagen became a victim of Wednesday’s snowstorm.
“Not many people showed up because of the blizzard conditions,” said organizer Clea Major, an international studies student at the University of Utah.
It didn’t take long for the six friends to pack up a bullhorn and posters they’d planned to use for their “scream-in,” an outlet for their frustration about the failure of the Copenhagen climate talks earlier this month to curb the pollution blamed for climate change.
Still, they chatted with a few passers-by during the commuter-hour protest near the Gateway, and explained that, blizzard aside, climate change is expected to bring chaos to the global climate, said Major.
She called Wednesday evening’s effort a success and possibly the first in a series. As for the snow, it’s not entirely new; a protest she attended last year in Washington, D.C., suffered a similar fate.
“There is always the irony element,” Major said.

(KCPW News) Climate change activists will stage a “scream-in” today at the Gateway Mall in downtown Salt Lake City to vent their frustrations about the Copenhagen Accord adopted by global leaders two weeks ago. University of Utah student Cléa Major says the demonstration is intended to call attention to the fact that the accord doesn’t require countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“Basically we want your average shopper to go home tonight after work and say, ‘Man, you know, I was returning my Christmas gift and there were these people screaming on the sidewalk, you know, what’s that all about?’” Major says. “We wanted to make an impression on people and we wanted to maybe put it in a location where it wasn’t necessarily expected to get people out of the post-Christmas haze to just sort of listen.”
Major sees the Copenhagen Accord as a failure, akin to the cap and trade legislation, The American Clean Energy and Security Act, that activists had hoped would set the tone in Copenhagen. The bill has stalled in the Senate after garnering a narrow margin of support in the House of Representatives this summer. All three of Utah’s Congressmen voted against it.
Major says the scream-in will be cathartic for those participating, who see the Copenhagen Accord as a missed opportunity to reverse climate change.
“We just all felt so helpless, we felt betrayed by this,” Major says. “We felt helpless and we felt furious because it was like we had just been looking to this to be the big thing that could turn it around or at least be a major jumping off point. And it just kind of stalled and failed and now there’s kind of this feeling of we don’t really know where to go next.”
The scream-in takes place at 5:30 p.m. on the northwest corner of 400 West and 200 South at the Gateway Mall.
The Gore Effect is the one aspect of climate (or is it weather?) that can be predicted with almost 100% accuracy!

Presumably the real issue here is that they feel their parents just didn’t lavish them with enough attention as they were growing up but I can’t help feeling that if their political arguments cannot be put forward in a more constructive way than standing on street corners literally screaming at people then it is maybe time for them to find a new hobby.
The one thing that seems to be unaddressed by all this so far is that no one seems to notice the scale of what is proposed:
If we universally accept that the industrial activity over the last 110 years has increased the global temperature by 1.5C and we then set a goal to limit any future increase, wouldn’t it be reasonable to think it would require the same amount of energy to apply the brakes?
Or is it as simple as breaking a fat dog’s plate?

Five inches of powdery snow in Salt Lake City yesterday. Not that cold (28F was max) and not very windy. People should have enjoyed the protest.

Reminds me of the “Peace Camp” at my University during the Gulf War. It made the National News (Canada) but in reality there were 20 empty tents and about a dozen wanna-be 1960’s protesters there. When the media showed up they got passers by to stand in so the nightly news could show 100s of protesters.
I don’t know what’s funnier, the “scream-in” as a protest or that it was called a success !!!!

It reminds me of an incident a couple of years ago. Some peace protesters went to Iraq or Afghanistan to tell the enemy how Americans felt sorry for them. This reminds me of my admittedly modest activism during my university days all those years ago. Some friends were much more activist than I was, but I don’t recall there being a lightning rod back then as all-encompassing as climate change is today. As I grew older and more aware, my activism turned to scepticism and I learned how much I actually had not learned in university. So too will it likely be for these protestors.
We all wanted to change the world when we were young and impressionable university students. Now as working adults in the real world we just want real, measurable, tangible security for our families.
They are Uni students? Just shows the average intelligence of these idiots. They figure that if you don’t like it then must be that it is “climate change” that some one else is guilty of. Hope they did not wear clothes made in evironmentally unfriendly ways.
What next a “hold my breath until I turn blue” sit in? These leftists have all of the maturity of a 5 year old. Check that: a spoiled 5 year old.
And if they keep holding these protests we’re going to have an ice age based on what’s been happening when they do!

If you check into the educational background of many of the most rabid AGW advocates, you find that many have degrees in watered down majors such as International STUDIES, environmental STUDIES, gender STUDIES, etc. Even NY Times writer Thomas Friedman has a B.A. from Brandeis in Mediterranean STUDIES. Even Gore and Obama have virtually no genuine science in their educational resumes. The people who push hardest for AGW often seem woefully lacking in basic science. Of course scientists like Mann, Jones, Hansen clearly have more of a political/monetary stake in the game rather than real science. I just don’t understand why the world can possibly take any of what they say seriously.

When you have a conclusion based on a preconceived notion whilst backing it up with cherry-picked data, and then using “hot button” words being advanced as science, no wonder a “soft” studies student would take up the cause. I’m in my 50’s and returning to college while still working full-time. Most of my career (with an electric utility) has been in the engineering/technical side, even without a degree.
I attend a notedly extreme liberal college through location, not choice. At a mandatory orientation session for new students, the Head of Admissions spoke about her interviews with applicants to the school about their choice of this college. I had a hard time not laughing out loud when she said one of the most often given reasons was the lesser math requirements to earn a degree compared to other schools.
Explains why a lot of these enviro nutjobs can’t follow the flaws in the underlying data. “We doan need no stinkin’ data!”
I wonder if this cream filled twinkie realizes that the exertion to do the screaming generated extra CO2 which she then emitted. In her own worldview, she is a climate criminal.

Anyone given a thought to how much CO2 is produced from the fireworks worldwide? Not only CO2 released from fire crackers and rockets but by people transport etc etc. How many greenie groups are protesting at this? A good example of ‘its okay cos we like doing it and anyway it wouldn’t look good if we told the world to stop’.

Big city lefties think food comes from stores. Where do the stores get the food? It’s delivered by big trucks. Well where do the trucks get it? They don’t have a clue.
They’re not taught where food comes from, they don’t take field trips to farms and dairies. Many of them apparently aren’t taught the proper nutrition that an omnivorous animal (such as a human) needs.
What they have been learning is that those silly farms don’t need water, that farmers “torture” and “murder” animals, that humans can survive perfectly fine on a diet of only plants. They don’t appear to understand that fermenting massive amounts of corn and other grains into alcohol for “biofuel” is raising the price *they* (and everyone else) pay for food. It’s no wonder Jay Leno has no problem finding clueless people for his “Jaywalking” bit on his TV show.
Pushing that asteroid far away is stupid. What a waste of resources! A better plan would be to guide it into orbit around Earth or Mars. In Martian orbit it’d make an excellent observation platform and staging base. In Earth orbit it’d be a source of raw materials for construction, or just dig into it as-is for a huge space station.
Consider it practice for nabbing some passing comets to skip into Mars’ atmosphere to plump it up and make it warm enough to melt the water and gasses frozen in its soil. Collecting enough rocks to mash together into a new moon big enough to tidally stress Mars the way our moon does Earth would also help things along. Likewise for Venus to help strip away its excess atmosphere, though speeding up its very slow rotation is the biggest obstacle in terraforming Venus.

The problem is not hard science versus sloppy arts. The problem is the general dumbing-down in the universities of the West. Yes, it began with arts/humanities, but from what I can see most if not all disciplines in Western universities have now been negatively affected to some degree – even engineering.
I started my professional life as a junior classics academic, then retrained in computer science, and now write data analysis software for a living, so I speak with some understanding of the perspectives of both sides.

Search this page for the words ‘toilet’ and ‘international’, and read the posts. My concern is that in general holding science/mathematics/engineering as inherently superior to arts/history/literature inadvertently aids and abets those very forces which have a vested interest in dismantling the enlightenment. The solution to the problem posed by the Clea Majors of this world is to redress the lowering of standards. Attacking by denigration the body of disciplines which primarily deal with understanding ourselves and our societies is not helpful.

Perhaps us sceptics should think about setting up drop-in centres where the poor CAGW protagonists who have had their belief shattered can be de-programmed and put on the road of being able to think for themselves again.
The IPCC cabal and the MSM have to take the blame for promulgating the big climate lie, and the politicians who sponsored this farrago need to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

My concern is that in general holding science/mathematics/engineering as inherently superior to arts/history/literature inadvertently aids and abets those very forces which have a vested interest in dismantling the enlightenment. I am one of your offenders. I studied chemistry and physics to the age of 19, and one year later was a student at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where I was lucky enough to be taught by some of the finest musicians in Europe.
There was plenty of discipline in that, both practical and academic. And even that was only an introduction to a life of disciplined work. There is always plenty to learn.
What I am saying is that many of the new ‘subjects’, often using the suffix ‘studies’ are invented to help make up the numbers to convince us that our politicians are improving education, while in fact they are busy wrecking it. Our UK government has a target for 50% of young people to go to university. When everyone has a degree it can no longer be called a degree by any accepted etymology.
We are in agreement that the real problem is the lowering of standards, and I am sure that it is part of a political agenda; a faulty notion of ‘equality’ and maybe that politicians prefer an unthinking electorate.
The trouble now is that the lowering of standards now applies to the academics also. The woman I lived with for some years did a Fine Arts degree as a mature student. The verdict, both hers and many other students, was that they had not been taught the basic skills, most likely because their tutors didn’t have them to teach.

Does major realise what the treaty in Copenhagen would have meant? Higher learning does not mean higher intelligence. These people obviously do not believe in research. It is a real sad statement for the condition this world is in, so many are uninformed and unable to use common sense. Makes me feel like screaming “WAKE UP!”….please.
Why is the concept of climate change so hard to grasp when by it’s nature it’s in layman’s terms? The climate systems are changing, I could tell that with only 26 years of observation, the summers are longer, the winters more intense once they arrive, rampant water shortages and desertification is beginning. In short folks, you calling people naive that are (for whatever reason) able to grasp that the world’s climate patterns are rapidly changing. The last serious (and quick) world change was the dark ages after a massive volcanic eruption interupted farming because of darking the sky and changing water fall. We were plagued with shortages, famine, civil unrest, and culture fell into generalized madness. And a time previous to that we can quantify a climate change that changed the face of living things on the planet….oh yeah the dinosaurs were eliminated from the ecosystem. While we wouldn’t have been able to survive if they’d have remained, you’d be stupid not to realize the dominant species, who don’t physically acclimate well, currently on the planet…is us.

Thank you for your comment. In your 26 years of experience I do believe you have it figured out, including how the dinosaurs fit into the ecosystem.
Humans are very fortunate that a nearby supernova or an asteroid took out our scaly competitors, or we would be fighting tooth and nail to keep our kids from being eaten on their way to school. As someone who had to walk barefoot through the snow to school, uphill both ways, I can not imagine having to fend off hungry dinosaurs too.
Your knowledge of the Dark Ages is also comprehensive. As you say, during the Dark Ages the culture fell into generalized madness. We are fortunate that today human nature has changed so radically that we no longer have to fear the ignorance and superstition endemic to that unenlightened time, when governments blamed witches for all manner of ills, and every common weather event, from droughts to hurricanes, was pointed out to all right thinking people as evil omens.
Inhabitants of the Dark Ages did not possess your grasp of the big picture, which is that the climate actually changes. We are more enlightened now, properly placing the blame for climate change on the evil carbon emitters of the West. If not for those selfish reprobates, we know that the climate would always be Goldilocks perfect, never too hot and never too cold.
I know it’s presumptuous of me to ask, but before the next volcanic eruption brings about a new Dark Age, can I have your autograph? Yes, your analysis is that impressive. I go along with the intense winters. That the summers are longer now has escaped me but the last few appeared, well, wet. Very much like some summers in the 70ies. KCrann, you didn’t mention anywhere in your post the terms “man-made” or “anthropogenic”. So i guess you do understand that there is natural variability at work here. Climate Change is natural. We need to adapt. Are we on common ground there?
