A slow-moving storm spread snow, sleet and rain across the nation’s midsection Thursday, making last-minute holiday travel treacherous but promising a white Christmas for some.
The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for parts of Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Texas. It cautioned that travel would be extremely dangerous in those areas through the weekend and that drivers should pack a winter survival kit.

DALLAS — In much of the rolling plains of West Texas, a blizzard has never been recorded.
There has been one now.
The region west and northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area saw blizzard-like conditions throughout the day Christmas Eve as up to 8 inches of snow fell in the region, according to the National Weather Service. Winds gusting at up to 65 mph drifted the snow as deep as 5 feet in some areas.
No blizzard warning had ever been issued for an area of Texas as far south as Interstate 20, said Jim Wingenroth, senior forecaster at the National Weather Service office in San Angelo.
Heavily traveled Interstate 20 between Cisco and Abilene was closed after six inches of snow fell in the area 130 miles west of Dallas, said Larry Smith, Brownwood area engineer for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Some churches canceled Christmas Eve services, while others saw sharply lower attendance.

For some people this will be proof positive that CO2 is causing climate change – logic has been replaced with the new science of unfalsifiable hypotheses. One may notice that many of these stories report new records in the 55 to 80 year time frame or “not seen in more than 50 years.” Similar statements go back to cool weather last summer. Meanwhile, James Hansen told us last week that 2010 may be the warmest year in the history of the instrumental record.
From Gold Butte, Montana to Tombstone, Arizona to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin there was record snow in the U.S.A.
There have been some theories that warmer temperatures would increase snowfall in Greenland and Antarctica due to greater humidity. I haven’t heard any theories though that global warming would lead to the near record cold and snow which the US is seeing. Most of the reports have predicted warmer winters with decreasing snow.
A few years ago The Guardian was predicting that England would become a Mediterranean climate.
There is a reason why the theory was named “global warming.” It is supposed to be getting warmer.
We are having our usual snow filled December etc. in the far North East next to Maine. I usually don’t have to shovel my roof off this early, but… Things change. Ice dams to cope with now, on the edge of my roof, causing water to back up towards the house under the shingles. However, all is not misery. I still have chestnuts – not over an open fire, which I don’t have anyway, but in the microwave.
Romm also made some blistering comments (which I didn’t read other than for Revkin’s response to Romm, on Revkin’s opinion piece in the times) about the departing Andy Revkin from the NYtimes, so maybe Andy can’t have been that bad after all. I resisted making my own blistering comment after that, about Andy striving to learn some science at Pace, and report more about valid science than that peddled by the IPCC.

Just finished trying to get my truck out of the street where I had to leave it yesterday since the global warming was three feet in my drive way here in beautiful Oklahoma City.
And here in Eastern Ontario there is little snow (though it was bitterly cold until yesterday, with -16 C overnight Monday, homogenised with Toronto that would make it only -10). Luck of the draw I guess.

Here the global warming of the last two weeks ( 2 feet of snow ) is turning in to global thawing. Should be nice with the frost we get after the weekend.
Doesn’t anybody read history anymore? In the past these record winter blizzards in the Northern Hemisphere occurred during cold periods associated with low sunspot activity and/or the aftermath of large volcanos. (e.g.Tambora 1813, ?Rabaul 535, Pinatubo 1993). The hallmarks of the Sporer, Maunder and Dalton Minima was failure of the monsoons in the Orient and the cold, wet weather in Europe. In the US Great Plains and Intermountain West the double whammy of summer drouth and severe blizzards clustered around low sunspot activity 1798-1832 (Dalton minimum), 1860’s, 1890’s, 1910’s, 1930’s and most recently during the 1960’s and early 70’s when the media and alarmist scientists were screaming about a coming ice age. In the Intermountain West and Great Plains we are in our third year of shortened growing seasons and colder winters. How many years of blizzards will it take before the “warmists” catch on that the correlation between weather trends is with the PDO, AMO and solar activity, not with CO2?

To be fair though, Medic, we had about a foot on the ground last Christmas, at least in the Portland area, in what was our snowiest December on record. I actually had about 36” total last year, in the suburbs north of Portland.
This month its all about the cold in the Pacific Northwest. Portland is on track to record it’s coldest month in 20 years. The official station had a low of 12 earlier this month ( for a west coast maritime climate such as ours, that’s cold!) and I hit a low of 4 during the same cold snap.
It’s elementary dear friends. Global Warming is confined to the arctic where it is forcing the cold air south. Get used to it!
Best of the season from south west Canada where Global Warming is presently confined to the mountain tops. Must be due to the carbon tax we pay here in BC

Right, same here about 75 road miles East of you. And since we here in NE Oregon have taken control of the 1200km. Grid Cell, the same thing must be happening at the Pacific beach.
Snow is one thing -ice is something else entirely.
Having had rain falling on frozen ground Sunday night, then snow on top, then some sun melting a bit off the top, everything re-freezing: that makes for most unpleasant conditions, especially for for pedestrians.
Having the grass on the big playing fields in the parks still covered in ice means even the dogs are not keen to stay out for long.
As for gritting pavements and footpaths – forget it! Local government hasn’t got the money or resources – after all, why plan ahead for an event the alarmists said wouldn’t happen any longer?
All I can say is: ‘that’ll teach’em!’ (I hope!!)
A friend called fron Sun Valley ID . Five degrees F , power out for the last twelve hours from Shoshone north . For some reason the alarm system in my townhouse has gone off , but the phones aren’t working either so he can’t call the security people .

Those “80-year records” are one more way the MSM slants the truth. Apparently they are speaking only of Christmas day. I recall snow in Dallas when returning from a Thanksgiving visit to Iowa around 1983-84. The fountain in our swimming pool was a popcicle when we got home.
Cityrating.com says that Dallas has an annual average of 37 days below 32 degrees.

First time ever that the National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the Kansas City metro area. It’s a white Christmas. I don’t know how much snow we got–it’s 18 inches deep in some places and the grass sticks out in other spots. Wind is wild!

Give it a few more months and the media will have rewritten history and all this freezing temperatures will be forgotten, true to the Orwellian society being built. Meanwhile the “official” temperatures will be adjusted and no evidence of a major cooling event will be seen for 2009. They may get away with it for now but if the global cooling continues for a few more years, I don’t think the public are that blind and stupid not to notice the corruption.
What I don’t get is when we experience hot weather the MSM rolls out the usual AGW stories – yet with all of the freezing weather afflicting most of the global there is no mention of the fact this does not line up with the consensus view on AGW – go figure?
This little ‘ol Texas boy ain’t built for global warming this cold. If this keeps up I’ll have to buy a snuggie.

Strictly speaking, moving Christmas to the 25th was a successful attempt to romanise the early christian faith, an effort that involved moving its major holy days to existing roman holy days in order to make it more comfortable for the roman people. Judging by what happens at Christmas, from presents to adorned “idols” to copious consumption of food and drink, not much has actually changed from the saturnalia feast but it’s very different from the pre-roman christianity.

No, no – the Gore effect is when Al Gore goes someplace to give a speech and remarkably cold weather happens. The effect seems to be spreading, e.g. I was in Atlanta in late February/early March to see Jim Hansen talk and he left early to get to that protest in Washington. I stayed and my flight home got canceled by snow. Now Obama has picked up the curse.
Either that or it’s getting colder and snowier in general.

Hmm, I live in Nova Scotia, East coast of Canada and we had a bunch of snow about a week ago, but it has since rained and mostly melted. There is a bit of frozen snow here and there, and some snowbanks from where the plows pushed it all, but definately not a “White Christmas”. Don’t know why it shows it as white on that map… but it is chilly that’s for sure.

What is truly astonishing is the complete lack of public curiosity from Schmidt, Hansen, Alley, Mann, Jones, etc. about the causes of this. The last few years have seen some remarkable cold, snowy weather – and these “scientists” just seem to shut their eyes.
That is what happens when ideology takes precedence over curiosity and the scientific method.

IMO this is what happens when despicable people in positions of influence go unchecked by the press and public at large.
History if full of scoundrels allowed to perpertrate all sorts of offenses because the checks and balances of scrutiny were either over powered or willingly sacrificed by those who’s twisted and conflicted ideology saw benefit in the offenses.

We’ve actually had quite a few ‘snows’ over the past +three decades that I have lived here; toss in a few doozys termed “ice storms” and the number of winter wx events goes even higher.

Hansen’s statement sounds more like a promise than a prediction. With climategate going on, I wonder if it’s a promise he can keep without getting caught.

I don’t think they ever had any curiosity. Otherwise they wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near to this far along. It resembles the state a lot of other people seem to have achieved in this Postmodern era – near total lunacy in response to Reality. Well, at least Obama “stopped torture”, that is, unless you are sane.
I watched Sherlock Holmes on Friday. One of the best lines was “When one has a preconceived notion of the outcome, he looks for evidence to support his idea rather than paying attention to what is actually happening.”
Sounds like an apt description of team Climategate.
Two things we need to remember:
1. If it has todo with climate, it is caused by global warming.
2. Record highs are proof positive of global warming. Record lows are local weather phenomena caused by global warming.

As someone who was stuck at Milan airport, trying to get back to the UK I can vouchsafe that this global warming sure is cold.
Of course I realise that this is only weather – it’s only an indicator of climate change when it’s oddly warm ;o)

Pedantic, I know, but it does jar to encounter such an error upon reading.
Perhaps, in the spirit of this New Winter Reality, Anthony could do a brief posting on the different kinds of ice / snow events. I was watching TWC talk about the Blizzard of 09 and they had “Ice Storm” advisories for some areas and “Freezing Rain” for others with “Freeze warnings” and “Blizzard Warnings” and… They all sound sort of the same to me (cold, miserable, stay by the fire), yet they clearly had some important distinction to the presenter.
So maybe, for those of us afflicted with a perpetual lack of anything worse than “light frost”, you could do a brief run down of “What the heck are these things and what makes one different from another?”. Somehow I suspect we’re going to be using those phrases a lot more than in the prior 30 years… (Maybe even cover “rime ice” vs heavy frost too?)
FWIW, we had ‘heavy frost’ Christmas morning in the Silicon Valley area. Somewhat early for that kind of frost. Wonder what it does to total GHG concentration when all that water vapor freezes out… It would be interesting to see a chart of total IR absorption as a function of water vapor plus CO2 as the temp drops from 110 F 100% humidity to -20 F. Has anyone ever put a sample atmosphere in a box and shone an IR light through it, then plunged the temp to OMG cold? Could be an easy and fun experiment…

Science advances when ‘the old guard’ dies off. I’d give it about 20 more years… It is a cruel irony that a ‘generation’ is about 30 years, and so it matches (roughly) the length of a cold or warm phase of the PDO … Makes me wonder if we are in a social oscillator of some kind.

Though, oddly, one can switch to the third person non-gender numberless ‘they’. As in:

Even more pedantic, I know, but it also jars the ear to hear too many “ones” in a sentence (being heard us ‘upper crust affectation’ to American ears, so it’s nice if one has an alternative…) BTW, you can also use “they” as the non-gender singular. We don’t need any “te” and “tis” or “s/he” or any of the other horrid creations. “My cousin is in town.” can be answered with “Do they like beer?”

Well…. “wiki” does mean “fast” and English is a Germanic based language, and in German “fast” means “almost” so in a very real sense, Wikipedia means ‘almost’ encylcopedia … or maybe “a little off” … So just remember that when you hear ‘wiki’… it is “almost”, and then things make much more sense. They just do everything a bit too ‘fast’…
