People are seen on the beach covered by snow in Nice, southeastern France, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009. Temperature is 3 degrees celcius (37,2 Farenheit).

(AP Photo/Lionel Cironneau)
Seems that they don’t get snow days there very often. While I don’t have a full report yet, it seems likely that this may be the first recorded snow for this date. ClimateZone has this summary:
click to see original report from ClimateZone.com

The above report is only short term, 8 years according tot he website, I’m writing this entry froma  Starbucks while traveling so perhaps our readers can find a longer term snow record for Nice, France.

CNN’s  ireport seems a bit incredulous with this headline. The video provided is interesting.

Snow on the French Riviera????

I am an American Expat living in Antibes (Nice) France. I live 5 blocks from the beach, and 3 blocks from Port Vabaun, the 2nd largest yacht port in the world. I thought living here, I would escape the ice and snow of my native Cincinnati, Ohio. Boy was I wrong!!!

CNN was no doubt telling it’s last two viewers the snow was caused by global warming.

O/T, but relevant.
“Now, a study published in the NZ Journal of Science back in 1980 reveals weather stations at the heart of NIWA’s claims of massive warming were shown to be unreliable and untrustworthy by a senior Met Office climate scientist 30 years ago, long before global warming became a politically charged issue. ”

Nice day to hit the beach! Meanwhile, here’s a cool public opinion survey on the credibility of scientists:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2009/12/18/GR2009121800213.html?sid=ST2009121800006
Q: How much do you trust the things that scientists say about the environment?
Compares answers in April 2007 with now. Trust is going down across the political spectrum. Though most intriguingly, those who trust “completely” has gone up (from 5% to 10%). But at the other extreme, those who trust “not at all,” has gone up faster (5% to 14%).
Also: WSJ has an astute article on Climate Change “Groupthink.”

Following the link given by Adom Gallon, one arrives at the original article published in the NZ Journal of Science, by J.W.D. Hessel, “Apparent trends of mean temperature in New Zealand since 1930” (received june 1979):
http://www.investigatemagazine.com/hessell1980.pdf
The abstract reads:
“The evidence of apparent continuous warming over New Zealand since 1940 is examined from both physical and statistical standpoints. It is found that the exposures of most of the thermometers have been affected by changes in shelter, screenage and/or urbanisation, all of which tend to increase the observed mean temperature. A systematic analysis of all New Zealand climatological stations with sufficient lengths of records reveals that no important change in annual mean temperature since 1930 has been found at stations where the above factors are negligible. Neighbour stations comparisons support these findings”.
The final sentence of the conclusion reads: “It is concluded that the warming trends in New Zealand previously claimed, are in doubt and that as has been found in Australia (Tucker 1975) no clear evidence for long term secular warming or cooling in Australasia over the last 50 years exists as yet”.

COPENHAGEN [AP] – Shocked and shaken by the theft of the Auschwitz sign, the world community must now “take note” of another midnight action. This time its a deal brokered by US President Barack Obama at the largest and most important U.N. meeting ever on fighting global warming. The new deal, which abandons the most vulnerable of nations along with the world’s biologically rich tropical forests, continues a pattern of what international representatives call a “real lack of transparency” by the White House. Obama dismissed the UN’s criticisms of his unusual and undemocratic negotiating process as “cynicism” while declaring his unbinding document an “unprecedented breakthrough”. Obama’s document promises to funnel up to $100B a year through the UN Development Programme, widely known for its corruption. “The deal is a triumph of spin over substance,” said Jeremy Hobbs, executive director of Oxfam International, it “kicks back” on the issue of “climate cash”. Like the Nazis sending “6 million people into furnaces” in the Holocaust, Obama is condemning the world to wide-spread global warming deaths, other leaders pointed out. Meanwhile, outside in the cold, hundreds of European protesters chanted and carried signs of Obama with the word “shame” pasted on his face.

Then there’s also this:
2,000 trapped as Eurostar trains break down
Eurostar officials have speculated that the quick transition from the icy cold of France, which is suffering some of its worst winter weather in years, to the relative warmth of the tunnel could have interfered with the trains’ electrical systems. But the company’s chief operating officer, Nicolas Petrovic, said Eurostar will have to investigate why the trains broke down.

Weather is when it happens once – or maybe twice. When it happens more than that, it’s “CLIMATE”. I’ve spent 4+ years living with “weather” (Continental Divide Trail, Great Divide Trail and the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, Newfoundland and the Pacific Crest Trail – ALL of them colder than “normal” by 10 to 20 degrees). It stopped being “weather” today while I was shovelling the 20 inches of snow from a 100′ driveway – and then had to shovel my way back into the house.

Naturally none of this was allowed to percolate the discussions in

real concern was to maintain the greatest financial scam the world has ever

OT:
On my daily commute to work by motorbike in freezing weather, I noticed a while back that my body becomes hyper sensitive to a change in temperature.
When passing a row of about a dozen well insulated houses on an otherwise empty country lane, I can feel a distinct warming, which is quite pleasant for the few seconds it lasts.
I think the heat island effect does not need very much urbanisation at all to make a difference to recorded temps.

AP-Seychelles bans Al Gore from visiting islands
In a sudden announcement, the Chairman of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, informed the gathered press corps that, after consulting Vice-President Joseph Belmont (cabinet member in charge of Tourism), Minister of Foreign Affairs Patrick Pillay, and President James Alix Michel, he had informed the American authorities that US ex-Vicepresident Al Gore was “persona-non-grata” in the islands. In a hastily arranged press conference, Mr Loustau-Lalanne said that “[I]n view of the recent events in Copenhagen and Nice, we have to protect our tourism industry from this roving catastrophe.” The Republic of Seychelles is heavily dependent on its tourist sector, which employs almost 30% of its workforce and brings most of its hard currency earnings. Mr Loustau-Lalanne added that “Mr Gore is well-loved in our islands for his constant fight to allow us to further tap Western largesse through his Climate Change policies, but at this juncture, after the failure of the COP15 and the uncertainty of future financial support, a sudden snowfall in our beautiful islands would ruin the tourist season.” Former US Vice-president Al Gore could not be reached for comments, though unnamed sources informed he had been granted an entry visa to Switzerland, a country which has been experiencing an atypically dry autumn.

The U.S has seen two mega storms so far, the one earlier in December and the one slamming D.C. and Winter is technically still 2 days away from starting.
Also, Intellicast is showing an incredible cold pool set to develop over Siberia and NOAA is showing the AO index off the bottom of the chart and may stay that way almost to January.

But the Medieval Warm Period was not so great for some humans in our own time — the same small band that believes the planet has now entered an unprecedented and dangerous warm period. As we now know from the Climategate Emails, this band saw the Medieval Warm Period as an enormous obstacle in their mission of spreading the word about global warming. If temperatures were warmer 1,000 years ago than today, the Climategate Emails explain in detail, their message that we now live in the warmest of all possible times would be undermined. As put by one band member, a Briton named Folland at the Hadley Centre, a Medieval Warm Period “dilutes the message rather significantly.”

“Is climate more than weather? Is weather just noise?”
http://scienceofdoom.com/2009/12/19/is-climate-more-than-weather-is-weather-just-noise/
Although one cold spell in one place isn’t significant, there have been a lot of comments from the more IPCC inclined community that a year or two of global cooling doesn’t mean anything. “It’s just noise”. But Keith Trenberth (top IPCC scientist) thinks differently. If it’s cooler, it’s really cooler. Where did the heat go? We should be able to explain it. I.e., it isn’t “noise”.
Take a look.

Ditto.
First, the US measurements are completely unreliable (see Anthony Watts’s Surface Stations Project, http://www.surfacestations.org/ ).
And the indefatigable EM Smith has show how the world’s thermometers have ‘marched’ southward—those that did not sit still while heat-producing airports grew up around them: http://chiefio.wordpress.com/
Then the Russians reveal that CRU cherry-picked their warmest measurements:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/12/16/russian-iea-claims-cru-tampered-with-climate-data-cherrypicked-warmest-stations/#more-14241
Now a paper from 1980 throws all the New Zealand data out:
http://www.investigatemagazine.com/australia/latestissue.pdf
Up to now, even the skeptics have generally admitted the warmist claims that there was some modest overall warming during the 20th century, but it is looking more and more likely that there was in fact—
None.
That’s right, not only is the hypthesis that human-produced CO2 causes measurable planetary warming not verifiable, but there has been no warming to measure.
And the measurements that show it are fraudulent.
Need more proof? Read AJ Strata’s little dissertation (referenced above), which demonstrates nicely the statistical hocus-pocus the alarmists have used to fool the public (and most of the scientific community, which is revealed as surprisingly gullible): http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/11932
It’s time for some gutsy public figures to stand up and denounce the whole ‘global-warming’ scam. So far the only one who has (in the USA), apart from mavericks like Senator Inhofe, is Sarah Palin.

My wife and I have been to Nice at Christmas. On Christmas Day we saw Santa Claus on waterskis – well the guy’s gotta relax after a hard night’s work!
It can get cold in Southern France in winter due to a strong cold airflow that begins in Siberia called the “Mistral”
But snow is definitely unusual. Not “unprecendented”, though.

It will be interesting to see the MSM start crawling out of the woodwork now that the summit is over and the cat is out of the bag. Whilst the bloggers on the DT have been having a field day, there have been no main articles on the AGW debate, – until now. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/matthewd_ancona/6845870/Copenhagen-was-the-MPs-expenses-scandal-writ-large.html
It will be interesting to see how many of them now start to play catchup and change their tune. Brown, like Blair before him, abandoned the UK when he realised his domestic policies had failed, and he has now failed to save the world. (but gave away a lot of our money while trying). So, nice that its snowing in Nice, but I’d rather it rained on the politicians parade.

According to Newsbusters.org, one William Connolley appears to have gone to great lengths to remove many inconvenient facts from the Wikipedia that might cast doubt on the anthropogenic global warming theory.
According to the article by Mathew Sheffield on Dec 19, 2009, Mr. Connolley has rewritten articles on global warming, the greenhouse effect, instrumental temperature records, the urban heat island effect, and erased material on the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period. “All told, Connolley created or rewrote 5,428 unique Wikipedia articles.”
History and science appear to be changing before our eyes.

I’m going to vote on how a candidate sees the issues. We need legislators who know the truth on this issue we all are so concerned about. This is desperately needed from us. If power plants and refineries are not being built, our capacity is waning out from under us, and eventually, rates will skyrocket. We could see rolling blackouts like CA had. Here in WA, a developer is proposing a fairly expensive solar farm (undoubtedly heavily subsidized) and I fear, will probably yield far less than capacity because we get so little sun. Well, Environmentalists are already lining up against him, claiming catastrophic damage to nearby streams, loss of wildlife, etc. This solar farm will require 900 acres to produce a quoted 73 Megawatts (and a probable 10-30MW) A coal fired plant consumes only 300 acres, and typically produces ~300 MW. So, possibly a 10 to 30 fold advantage on 1/3 the acreage of forest.

Snow on the French Riviera happens from time to time, although not every year. I assume one year out of two on the average in 1990s&2000s decades, including several time heavily enough for disrupting for hours the motorway traffic. I remember it since I was working on traffic data in 1990s.

Downunder we do, yes.
We’ve had some warmish days in Sydney, but overall wet and a bit cool for this time of year, about 1C below the normal avg I would guess from the weather.com forecasts and records. The pool is not as warm as I’d like yet….
Adelaide have had some hot days, I hear. When I’ve been in North Queensland in the tropics over the last few months it’s been wet and about average, I’d say, perhaps a bit cool (as my mate says “you would not want to spend more than an our or too outside without a shirt at night” – obvioulsy ‘cool’ is relative).

The ‘beach’ at Nice is actually made of small rocks. It’s not sand at all, more like river pebbles.
The ‘sandbanks’ you can see are actually painted concrete and/or rock walls. Because the whole beach faces due south in Nice, these concrete walls would have warmed up considerably with any type of sunlight and melted any snow. I guess the rocky beach doesn’t get as hot.

I’m at 27 deg S Latitude on the East Coast of Australia, and I can tell you it’s been a hot, dry summer for me so far. But then, we get one of two types of summer here in the sub-tropics – either warm and wet, or hot and dry. El Nino calls the shots. 2 years ago it was a terribly wet summer with few fine days. This year, nice and sunny but not much rain. Nothing untoward though – no 40 degree (C) days or anything like that.
But then, that’s exactly how I remember it as a kid as well. Some years the lawn would be as crispy as breakfast cereal. Other years it would grow so much you’d have to mow twice a week. Every year it was hot enough to swim in the pool at night time. Still is. You can keep your snow.

In southern NZ early Spring (August) was great. Since then it has been cold in the main with a great deal of wind. Much of Spring was grey but dry, December has seen very strong winds, some rain but only a few warm days. For the East Coast, pretty much standard El Nino. As a guide – no weekend barbeques and only a couple of days fishing. The Dunedin Santa parade was rained off and today we had hail (again) and a gale force southerly. I’ve needed the heat pump virtually every evening.
However, we are promised a great improvement later in the week.

On Sky News this morning (Sunday) Henry Kelly was reviewing the papers, and he doesn’t believe in the global warming myth, either, and gave Christopher Booker’s article in the Sunday Telegraph good coverage.
BBC Breakfast, however, was interviewing someone about Copenhagen, and never even mentioned the alternative thinking – they never do. Also, that awful leftie Kevin Maguire was reviewing the papers.
Why is the British media so wrapped up with socialism, and truth-hiding? It’s incredible, considering the air-time given to the unflappable, calm and informative Lord Monckton in Canada? All the British media can do is wheel out the same panicky alarmist gloom mongers, who are hell bent on crushing sceptics, without saying why.
After all that’s happened, can’t some enterprising member of the public (or industry) take out some sort of class action against the government (and its BBC arm) for rushing headlong into cash-wasting policies on a whim, because they’ve been misinformed and choose to take the opposite action to that dictated by common sense?
How long do we have to sit, powerless, and take this stuff – watching our politicos destroying us against our express wishes?

Would I be a sceptic if I suspect that November was also below average and that NOAA is holding the info until after the Copenhagen focus is over?’
You would be a skeptic Bob: it was definitely issued as I saw it and it was very much ABOVE average.
2009 after 11 months was pretty much normal, with a few states above and a few states below.

Richard … IPCC 2007 – VIRTUALLY CERTAIN for the 21st Century – warmer and fewer cold days and nights, reduced disruption to transport due to snow and ice, reduced energy demand from heating.
I don’t have the full 2007 report. Can you please provide the exact reference … page number etc.
Thank you.

It’s funny, even in the ’70’s when it used to snow like this, the authorities did have equipment to deal with it but it still brought the country to a standstill.
I do not envy anyone stuck on M3, M4, M20 and M25 corridors in snow like this.

Roger Knights (10:41:40) :
“Have the traffic authorities neglected to stock up on rock salt again? Was it, again, on the MET’s advice?”
To expand the point. Last February UK almost came to a halt for a few days under a light dusting of snow.
It later emerged that many Local Authorities had reduced their stocks of road salt by following the official Met Office advice that cold winters were becoming unlikely. Therefore, any public service employee might have faced charges of reckless spending had they kept their local salt depots properly stocked.
The whole country more or less ran out, stocks were belatedly shipped in from abroad ( despite UK mining its own salt) and there were even reports of table salt being used at hospitals and the like.

From a “like climate zones” perspective that’s akin to snow on the beach in San Francisco or Monterey.
