Al Gore on SNL skit: What Up With That?

Irony abounds. I wonder what Gore was thinking during all this?

Pretty cool – superimposing his plug for his book with “What up with That?” I think Gore got dissed.

?? What the H is up with that?? Was this a real skit or what exactly? My reaction is that this looked to be a total send up of Gore — how else to explain it? Someone, help me understand this or is my naive reaction exactly right?

That was (and I never do this caps/hypenating) H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! Looks like a burn both ways, though. Portraying Wattsup as nothing more than an annoying interruption, if the skit has any more meaning than it lets on. Still, Gore had to be a little uncomfortable sitting through that one.
REPLY: I don’t know if the title was a reference to WUWT, or mere coincidence based on the social meme presented. Curious either way. What would be funny would be if Gore didn’t know ahead of time. Of course, he’s so insulated from reality he may not even know of WUWT, the blog. – Anthony

If Gore was trying to plug his book, which of course he was, how pathetic. The skit was pretty weak in my mind, and Al came off looking even weaker. It made him look like part of a joke, which is of course what he is.
I’m sure the WUWT title was surely coincidental. Would anyone really believe the writers at SNL have any knowledge of it?

It would seem as though Al Gore found a great way to have made a great fool of himself.
As for the “Whats up with that” routine, as is said in show biz, any publicity is good publicity. I don’t see the hits on this web site declining.

With SNL the shots of Obama on recent episodes and now this “Watt’s up With That”, poke at Gore do we dare think that some with slightly more conservative attitudes has managed to wrangle a writers job at SNL?
Actually SNL over has done a good job of shifting alliances to mock the powers that be, so this might be a more than mere coincidence.
On a side note there must be someone out there in then internets who has ability to “fix” the unfortunate spelling mistake in the SNL skit and add a .com to the bottom of the title sequences?

Did anyone else notice that “His Hugeness The Goracle” has shrunk himself down to normal proportions? In a full frontal camera shot I could actually see his ears! That radiative bounce idea someone had of dressing Big Al up in a white suit and staking him to the North Pole will is no longer viable.

I guess I’m dating myself when I say that I remember when SNL was actually funny. It’s true! I know, I know, it’s difficult to believe, but back in the first few years they actually had funny people doing funny things.
Maybe it’s more of a sad commentary on modern civilization that a skit like that IS considered funny today. I mean, why listen to anyone? We all know what they’re probably going to say, so just get their faces on there and pretend they said it… drown them out…
And no, “TE”, nobody here ACTUALLY believes it was about WUWT, I really wish that trolls would comprehend the definition of “sarcasm”. Don’t they teach that at troll training school?

Pretty subtle for a writer at SNL @ NBC owned by GE maker of wind turbines to use the American Black vernacular, “Whut up with that?” to create the linkage. “Sure, Al, we won’t ask you any hard questions, come plug your book! ”
It IS a plug for the book in prime time BUT Albert Gore and book are minimized, (along with two other guests, “Not just you Al, baby, two other guests, too, ya know?”)
Looks like host & friends are just too busy, too mindless, or too I just gotta sing to too take serious notice of award winning Ex-VP Gore and his book of ‘choices’ for climate change. Wow!
Political satire is ‘under the radar’ political persuasion. Good piece.
Or, on the other hand, it’s just a coincidence.

My bet is one the poor sod who wrote the: “READ ME for Harry’s work on the CRU TS2.1/3.0 datasets, 2006-2009!” I bet after he saw that the whole data set was simply guess work and not at all meaningful he released the information before the world’s economies were destroyed by such outlandish foolishness.

Yes, it was Dirty Harry that did it. Thoughout that text file he keeps notes wondering about the integrity of the data handed him.
Then it dawned on him. He figured out they were using him to launder the files they had already purged. So, Harry goes fishing about, and comes across originals, and the people and processes used to mangle the data.

SNL has a well-earned reputation for responding quite quickly to what’s happening outside of the studio. They also had (it’s been years since I saw a show) reputation for not taking any prisoners. It just might be either a case of them knowing the Hadley leak has destroyed the credibility of the AGW mob and have shown it by the fact that with this skit SNL has totally PWND Al Gore. Or, alternate universe and an older parallel, AGW has jumped the shark. Either way Copenhagen just might get verrry interesting (even older reference).

The pomposity of this comment in the shadow of the SNL humor just frames the issue more clearly. It doesn’t matter if SNL wanted to tie into WUWT. Who, beyond this woebegone mortal cares. This is funny. The justaposition of theatrical nonsense on top of AlGores serious attempt to promote his book (with the wierd cover pictures) all fits and its hillarious. November 22, 2009 9:20 pm

If Dirty Harry did it, how did he get all the emails?
That i think points more to Who Did It?
Or is it a Plural answer? One or more people grabbed emails, others grabbed raw data.
Or it could be as simple as, The AGW people compiled the data (stupidly) into one file, to prepare for the FOIA if it wasn’t turned down. and if it was turned down, then the smoking gun could be archived into obscurity (like Indiana Jones’ Ark) Probably not hard to copy (when found) if that occurred.
I also forsee this as being an Brietbart kind of thing, with more data still to be released, less “Random” and “Selected”, and pointed at the current cover up-lies. Brietbart proved a way to deal with evidence of a corrupt organization that is strongly approved by the dominant media.

Thanks for that monkeyboy. That was funny. Al Gore was treated just like the buffoon he is. Mind you for non-americans half the stuff was gibberish – but funny nonetheless.
From what I could make out:
Monkeyboy – (After 3 minutes of monkeying around) Well lets get down to biznez! Former Vice President Al Gore is here – (Al smiles and nods in acknowledgement – applause) he is a (staunch?) advocate for the environment.
Al Baby – Andre? its such a pleasure
Monkeyboy (Andre?) – Pleasure is all mine Al, pleasures all mine – heh heh heh … (laughter) – now you have a nuuu (we call it new to rhyme with pew) book down (sounds like put down) called I was short? the man who solve the climate crisis – that right?
Al Baby – I do – (holds book up with huricanes air brushed on cover) this is an issue I have been working on for a laang time and I feel we have aal the tools to saalve this problem (laughter) except perhaps the political will…
Monkeyboy – po-lit-ical will, po-lit-ical wi-ill (more laughter louder) –
Al looks quizzical – not amused, bites his lips and carries on raising his voice a notch, FFortunately in the United States Political will is a renewable resource – (Monkeyboy – Ren-ew-able Resource – laughter) – Al glances around preplexed – not happy – not quite knowing what to make of this – after a pause decides to plow on manfully – THIS IS A CRISIS OF UNPRECEDENTED (Monkeyboy -UNPRECEDENTED BAYBAYYEE) but I think we’re upto the challange …
Monkeyboy – sings dances- I gat to get up (gets up) I gatta saayee — OOO ee Watt up with dat .. watt up with dat … dancers on stage – Al gestures in utter confusion – preplexed – vigorous dances while Al tries his best to avoid a swinging guitar.
Monkeyboy sits down. Al extends his hand questioningly says something inaudible (what?…) – Monkeyboy – well looks like we’re outta time… applause…
Excellent way to treat Al Gore… Just the right intellectual level for his crap.
That Watt up with that – could be the signature tune for WUWT.

This skit is absolutely brilliant – especially how they conned Gore into “playing along” with six plus minutes of making a total mockery of him. He is probably still clueless as to the high likelihood that he was not there to be a contrast to the parade of clowns, but was just another member of the circus.
By the way, the music is excellent… I have a musical education and came away highly impressed with the skit on its musical value alone. That was a really well done musical production!
Nothing in these e-mails seems to touch Hansen??
Hansen is CCed on several e-mails, including a discussion on how they cannot balance the energy budget and if clouds are making the planet brighter. Example shown below.

Not only does GE own NBC, and not only does GE benefit from all the “green” energy contracts being let for wind turbines among other hardware, but NBC continues to insert non-sequitorial “green” brainwash into all it’s programming these days. It’s all so clunky and obvious, it’s laughable. MSNBC has also produced numerous uncritical “news” “interviews” with Obama staffers and GE employees. They might as well be on Oprah, for all the real, actual news value these programs contribute!
GE is also to be the purveyor of the centralized medical data management in the idiotic Obama Care regime – a contract of monumental proportions, among many, many others.

Okay, Al knew…no one goes on SNL expecting there to be a serious discussion…I mean, come on! He was even joking about it/himself later in the episode during Weekend Update. His “back-up plan”?!?! Come on people! And did any of you see his spot on 30 Rock? Al Gore is amazing.
And, he’s also right you know…I mean, we all must’ve heard about the giant glaciers heading to Austrailia. Watts up with that?!

I am amazed at the amount of people who wonder if this was a diss in the direction of Al Gore. Amazed!
For God’s sake people, SNL is satire. Al Gore has guested on this show many times, and he plainly is a good sport. There is a reason why they do dress rehearsals all week. “What Up With That” mocks the talk-show circuit, and DeAndre Cole’s long intro with his theme song is hysterical because he is left with too little time to chat with his guests. Add to that the random special guests that appear and the random dancing and you’ve got a winner in my book! Love DeAndre!

Awesome sketch, I agree! Sometimes comedy is just comedy. Don’t need to read into it too much. SNL writers have gotten better over the last 10 years. Lorne can be proud.

Are you people living on another planet? Obviously Gore knew about it you knuckleheads. Talk about naive. It’s a SCRIPTED sketch on a comedy show. This was the second of what is now three installments of What Up With That. Do you think Gore came on the show not realizing it wasn’t an actual show? Do you think he doesn’t know he’s working with actors? I’m actually getting mad thinking about the stupidity of people out there. Has anyone here seen Saturday Night Live before? It’s a sketch comedy show. It’s been on since the 70’s. Gore has been on multiple times. It’s a joke, and he’s OBVIOUSLY in on it. I can’t believe someone has to explain this to you people. It makes me really worry about the state of this country when people are so stupid that they don’t realize their stupidity. Then you have the audacity to act smug about it. Even if you haven’t seen SNL before, can you really not tell that Gore is acting (even if it’s a bit subpar acting.) I love the guy who says “I suspect Al knew it was coming.” Really? What gave you that idea, idiot, the fact that he was on a comedy show and he had scripted lines with a bunch of comedians? Get a clue morons.

Jeanne, This is the first I saw of your response. THANK YOU. I was amazed by the responses as well. It actually made me feel bad about the intelligence of the human race to know that many people didn’t understand that the sketch is a joke and has nothing to do with the beliefs of the supposed “guests” on the show. These people actually thought that it was somehow a diss of Gore. LOL!! This week Mike Tyson was on. I wonder what the secret message behind that was!

I am dittoing the above comment….Al Gore knew what was going to happen in the skit, the whole thing is a joke. If you were to watch the whole episode, he is in a few more sketches. So in this case, its a good thing for Gore, considering he can take that joke.

Jim,
I’m with you! Even my kids, in their early 20s, (and my youngest, age 11) know about satire, and are huge fans of SNL. They can appreciate irony, and poking fun at the powers that be. Better yet when a guest host can poke fun at themselves. Even Palin was on and was pretty entertaining, and yes, she poked fun at herself and was a hit. I don’t agree with her brand of politics, but I thought she was a good sport as was Al Gore.
So, wake up folks! Maybe do a little research regarding SNL on Wikipedia and THEN comment. Clearly, y’all haven’t been watching it through the years. There’s hope for you yet. You’re never too old to learn so do your research!
