Climate Craziness of the Week: What's more idiotic than holding a cylinder of CO2 for a photo op in the snow? – Calling it "art".

People email me stuff. Sometimes its just too bizarre to ignore. We have another person on an “expedition” with a camera and artistic license to foist upon the world:

click for the video

From Francesca Galeazzi of the disko.bay expedition, whatever the hell that is:

This morning I walked across the fresh snow with a gas cylinder in my arms, containing 6kg of CO2. I took it across the unspoiled snow field of the Jakobshavn Fjord until I found what, to my eyes, was a wonderful place.

From a little hill I could see massive icebergs impassably floating by, some of them breaking up from time to time with a loud bang. The sea below was deep grey, which made the icebergs stand up in all their beauty and fragility. The sky was a merge of pale grey and cerulean with a yellow glow just behind the skyline. Lichen and small berry plants could be felt under the powdery snow as I walked by. I thought this is perfect!

I walked to the top of the small hill, I put the cylinder down, got on my knees and opened the valve. The CO2 came out violently, freezing the air around the nozzle and producing an unpleasant whistle. When I lowered the cylinder towards the ground, the snow blow off all around me under the pressure of the air jet, almost to signify the melting of the Arctic ice shelf because of the Carbon emissions generated somewhere else.

Francesca Galeazzi during her carbon emissions piece in The Arctic

Photo: Nathan Gallagher.

Reading this you might think I am an evil horrible woman. I would like to reassure you, I am not! I havenā€™t done anything bad. because I have offset the carbon emissions generated by the CO2 cylinder, through an online Gold Standard Carbon Offsetting scheme! Cool no? This is great stuff. one can go about consciously polluting the world, wasting energy, producing tonnes of waste and abusing natural resources without feeling guilty at all!! One can simply pay somebody to compensate for his/her ā€˜badā€™ actions somewhere else, and become Carbon Neutral!

Donā€™t you think this is great?

Read the rest here

No, and I think you are beyond art, you’ve launched yourself into the great realm of anti-art with a megadose of idiocy.

What next? posing propane cyclindersĀ  with polar bears? Yes the propane and propane accessories signifies the struggle against heat the polar bears must face every day.

Hey it’s art. I have a license.

I think it’s sort of a protest performance. She goes on to say in her blog how appalling the notion of buying offsets is since it doesn’t really stop the offending behavior. All intended to make us think about the fallacy of the concept of carbon offsets. Similar points have been made by many AGW skeptics.

Hang on;when CO2 comes out fast it cools the immediate surroundings. That’s the answer-we must not stop emitting CO2,we must emit it faster.
I wish I’d thought of this sooner-I’ve saved the planet!;)

Ugh. Activist, artist, whatever she is, it’s beyond silly. It’s people like these who give the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions a bad name. There’s no need to feel guilty about anything. You either reduce your own emissions, or pay for somebody else to reduce theirs. How does it matter who does it, so long as the total amount of emissions goes down?
The main shortfall of offsets is making sure the emissions reduction you’re paying for wouldn’t have happened anyway. That gets tricky.

” almost to signify the melting of the Arctic ice shelf…” No, nothing like almost. And what was the temperature while this pointless pantomime was being enacted with the massive icebergs “impassably” floating by in their fragility? Pretty chilly, I bet.

‘offending behavior’ is a pseudo-religious perspective on a pseudo-scientific apocalyptic cult.
Who funded her trip to the far North?
Here is what I wrote her, but was blocked by her spam filter:
6kgs of CO2 is exactly and completely unimportant to the climate. You have no need for guilt.
By the way, it was water vapor freezing around your cylinder, not air.
And, also by the way, icebergs are anything but delicate. They are great hills of ice that can and do sink ships. They way many thousands of kilotons.
I hope you enjoyed your trip to Greenland. It will be there long after us, no matter what we do.

The comments behind the article are even better. This from someone called Birdie.
“Iā€™d LOVE to take pictures and project them with text on the icebergs there. I am a writer/photographer/projectionist. Take a picture of a jet & project it as a 40 foot image on a berg with ā€œWeapon of Mass Destructionā€ in text across it. I have a whole series of photoā€™s/text ideas like that. But, projecting involvesā€¦xenon bulbs and at least 4,000watt ones..and xenon producesā€¦Ozone. Yes, it does. And, I have a pretty good feeling they could explode in the cold. Which means, haha, Carbon Arc for a light source. Carbon Arc light is produced by electric current running across two sticks ofā€¦carbonā€¦which when touched together briefly, creates a flaming arc. A reflector then, magnifies the light from the flame and sends it through the slide or motion picture film. It creates a pure white light whereas xenon produces a light more blue in color. I have used carbon arc and xenon for over 30 years to show movies in studios and movie palaces. So, my job either has burned carbon (it puts off carbon monoxide btw) or created ozone. I would love to project huge images of trucks, planes, SUVā€™s on the bergs and more..with textā€¦and do what I do, making a big point of it all. I am pretty sure I would need to bust out sticks of carbon, to light up the images. Would it be worth it. Ummmā€¦.yes, with the rightā€¦light and images and text ā€“ could feed t-shirts, a calendar, videos for youtube etc, backdrops for concerts, bumper stickers. It could make an impact. Once upon a time, we built fires in caves and did our storytellingā€¦carbon arc and film is the same thing, just more techno than two sticks of wood to get a fire going. The carbon sticks would be shown as part of the process. They look like huge black pencils. Meanwhile, isnā€™t it interesting how flying all about the world on say, holiday is perfectly acceptable? I mean, isnā€™t that just a prime example of Eco-Vandalism? Why is that legal? Why do people think nothing of it or driving SUVā€™s? Hello!
I came up with bumper stickers that have a drawing of a SUV on them that say ā€œWeapon of Mass Destructionā€ for all kinds of legal reasonsā€¦everyone can put them on their own cars and so the tailgating SUVā€™s can read them. Putting them on other peoples SUVā€™s ā€“ even if it is just a bumper sticker ā€“ is vandalism and comes with a fine. Driving an SUV and contributing to climate change, does not involve breaking ā€œthe lawā€ nor a fineā€¦other than the consequences and cost of what comes from Climate Changeā€¦which is far more serious than a silly little fineā€¦what a strange world we live inā€¦.natural law, however, wins out. Oh, yes it does.”
Fortunately Jeez seems to have his feet slightly more on the ground;
“Neo post modernist tripe masquerading as art.
While it is unlikely you will ever grow up, one can only hope that you will help to save the world by foregoing the opportunity to reproduce.”
Mind you this is nothing- don’t forget that article I sent you where some artist is bringing a lump of rock from Svalbard and touring it round the South West of England as part of the Olympics-He is calling it ‘Nowhere island’ and is registering it as a micro nation with the UN. He got Ā£500,000 from our idiotic Arts Council for that stunt.
Francesca is an amateur compared to Nowhere Island.

Lichen and small berry plants could be felt under the powdery snow as I walked by.
In the second photo where Fran is blowing the snow around, it appears the snow is underlain by ice. In addition to assumptive computer models, alarmists also must feel the necessity to convince us that we can’t quantify what we actually see.

These people are just latter-day hippies; completely oblivious to the real world. The cylinder didn’t generate any CO2 emissions. Someone pumped the CO2 into the cylinder and you let it out. All you did was waste all the energy that was used to fill it.
BTW, this was from 2008 and the expedition was a bunch a celebrities (and thier hangers-on) wasting energy and polluting the west coast of Greenland for a few weeks to show their concern about the environment.

She must be from Oregon.
Cause we got lots of crazy here.
Try this.
“When even a polar bear is driven to drink, the world really might be in trouble.
On a recent trip to Canada, 16-year-old Patricia Billette spotted a polar bear lapping up water — unusual, because the arctic predators generally get all the water they need from the icy food they eat. The drinking bear, Billette said, is a telling sign that global warming is affecting the planet and, more specifically, polar bears, which she said are enduring shorter feeding seasons because of warmer weather.”

Here’s my version, cleaned up for my own sensibilities:

This morning I walked across the fresh snow with a gas cylinder in my arms, containing 6kg of CO2. I took it across the bitterly cold snow field of the Jakobshavn Fjord until I found what, to my eyes, was an appropriate place.
From a little hill I could see massive icebergs impassably floating by, some of them breaking up from time to time with a loud bang. The sea below was deep grey, which made the icebergs stand out with the horror of the freezing they represented, their cold impersonal destructiveness prepared to devastate, yet again, almost all places we live and grow food. Lichen and small berry plants, frozen dead, could be felt under the powdery snow as I walked by. I thought this is perfect!
I walked to the top of the small hill, I put the cylinder down, got on my knees and opened the valve. The CO2 came out aggressively, initially freezing the air around the nozzle and producing the characteristic scream of defiance at being bottled away. When I lowered the cylinder towards the ground, the snow blow off all around me under the pressure of the air jet, a symbol of the hope we all must share that increased CO2 emissions can someday avoid this tragedy, this freezing, this bitter cold death of all humanity.

See? it’s all in how you phrase it.

I joined a forum about two years ago (only for a few weeks) just to correct a ‘new-ager’ (actually the host of the web site) on a point about the Sun’s age, and I got into a lengthy discussion with her about climate change. Dear Carrot, there are a few more problems then that. Do you not have to know in fact that any reductions paid for actually happen at all. Also it would be helpful to know that reductions were really even needed. The world of 280PPM would need 20% more water to grow the amount of food we do today with 380PPM CO2

It’s not considered art these days unless somebody is offended, preferably deeply offended.
So this must be art because the sheer stupidity of it (and the artist) is offensive. If I find out this was paid for with tax dollars, I will be doubly offended, which would make it even more artsy-fartsy.
Speaking of artsy-fartsy, can I sell carbon offsets by promising to not eat certain foods, particularly vegetables from the legume family and others containing high amounts of not-completely digestible complex carbohydrates? Is there a market for that?
I’m already getting money from my wife to not eat those foods and I’m thinking about selling more offsets through PayPal. Anybody interested in a venture-capital opportunity? It’s e-commerce!

So, using her own “logic” the very “expedition” these eco-loons was on is also “Eco-vandalism”. Have they given any consideration to what must certainly be a monstrous “carbon footprint” or “eco-footprint” for this jolly? No, not even the “artist” Francesca Galeazzi seems to have considered this fact, even though she manages to see the hypocrisy and uselessness of the concept of “carbon offsets”.

Hmm, it’s my understanding that these carbon-credit (absolution) companies aren’t really engaged in reducing emissions rather increasing emission absorption(planting trees, plankton seeding and the like.) Some companies sell future planting of trees. If some are actually engaged in reducing emissions, it would be news to me. But I don’t believe that is the point of all the hysteria to begin with.

Good old Lubos has had a couple of insightful pieces on this work, but how about something here for us uneducated masses.

Since the Dadaists began the Contemporary Art movement, ending the Modern Art movement, they do stuff like this. See, this art Critic with a capital C named Greenberg once lived who told everybody in proper marxist revolutionary terminology, how Abstract was true Art because it didn’t represent anything in the real world, he said “Art exists for its own sake, it is not a window, but an object.” This defined Modern Art.
Then the Dadaists came along who called bull$hit on that, that that was all absurd, and they demonstrated that by creating absurd art: made from garbage, performance art of nonsense syllables in carboard costumes, etc. until one guy took Greenbergs maxim to its ultimate, absurdly logical conculsion, that if art is an object, then objects are art, so he took a toilet and stuck it on a wall and called it art.
Our faithful artist here we see is illustrating what she thinks is the absurdity of carbon trading: akin to an exchange for indulgences, where all people are expected to do some bad, and if they do less than expected, they can sell the margin to those who do more than expected, and it all comes out even in the end, and based on the assumption that doing more evil is more profitable than doing less evil, and that this should be actively balanced out by this faux free market scheme on trading in Sin as sin is defined by the Church of Global Warming.

Iā€™m thinking Francesca Galeazzi is a Dirty Harry fan, ā€˜cause she just made my day! Its always good to have a big laugh in the morning!
And I have to say, I think that might have been the missing explanation that I have been searching for to convince me man-made CO2 is destroying the planet: its amazing how succinct the pro-warming scientific argument can be! Who needs to fabricate a Hockey Stick graph when you can just take a stroll and burp a little CO2 into the atmosphere to prove your case!
Personally I think she should have used Helium instead, and then she could have talked in a funny squeaky voice, and it would have been comedy as well as art; doubly powerful!
But on a serious note, I think weā€™ve all missed a major issue here: with poor old Martin Luther turning in his grave at the resurgence of prepaid indulgences. In his day, you could pay a priest and get an indulgence, which covered you for sins you were about to commit, like advanced Confession, but paying a bit of money rather than having to actually confess, and getting the forgiveness in advance to make sure you were covered. In this way, seriously religious people (and in those days people took religious obligations very seriously) could commit murder and all form of other sins with a pre-forgiveness piece of paper in their pocket. The whole Reformation took off of the basis that this was bad, wrong, corrupt, evil, terrible, and travesty et hoc genus omne, ad nauseum.
Sound familiar? Says bright young Francesca:
ā€œI havenā€™t done anything bad. because I have offset the carbon emissions generated by the CO2 cylinder, through an online Gold Standard Carbon Offsetting scheme! Cool no? This is great stuff. one can go about consciously polluting the world, wasting energy, producing tonnes of waste and abusing natural resources without feeling guilty at all!!ā€
I was about to say its all about as dumb as it gets, but tragically, its not the bottom of the barrel.

Carbon offsets, what a joke. Since we all breathe out CO2 it means that those who breathe out more must contribute more CO2 to the atmosphere. Perhaps marathon runners should buy carbon offsets. Any marathon runner want to contact me and sell them an offset whereby I guarantee to bury the weeds from my garden and not burn them in an incinerator. For a few quid extra I will guarantee not to buy a BBQ.

“Drawing Power: 1500 wait in freezing weather to meet Sarah Palin on book tour
In case anyone needed an example of the drawing power and political energy that Sarah Palin wields, the Detroit Free Press report on the start of her book tour should fill the gap nicely. Despite freezing temperatures, people gathered by the hundreds early this morning to greet Palin in person at a Grand Rapids bookstore. By 5 am, five hundred people stood outside the Barnes & Noble ā€” and two hours later, the numbers had swelled to 1500:
And thatā€™s 4:55 this morning when the thermometer had dipped into the 30s. But the 500 or so people in line didnā€™t mind the sleepless night or the onset of winter.”

Well the camera work must have been bad; because I watched and waited for something to happen when all that ;black evil CO2 came gushing out of the cylinder, and formed a pool of dry ice on the ground !
Nothing; not a darn thing happened; can I get my click back please.
How far did these people walk to make this horror movie ? Was that Cape Fear did she say ?
What was that big white whale in the background; or was that something else that I got wrong.
These people really do have some sort of mental block to reality, to engage in this sort of silliness.
Now I may be sympathetic to their case. To me it truly is stupid to let somebody pay to be able to pollute; not that CO2 is pollution; but if the aim is to curb emissions; you don’t let people pay to circumvent that aim; because everybody will pay to continue emissions, and smply pass the cost on to the unsuspecting coustomer.

If I’m not mistaken, this young lady and others of the AGW persuasion, fit the definition of an “Invasive species” per the UN. http://earthwatch.unep.net/emergingissues/biodiversity/invasivespecies.php
To wit: ” Invasive species are organisms (usually transported by humans) which successfully establish themselves in, and then overcome, otherwise intact, pre-existing native ecosystems. Invasive species constitute a global-scale problem affecting inter alia health, agricultural potential, and biodiversity. Increasing global trade and changing land use patterns may aggravate this problem in the coming years. Pest prevention and control have been on-going for many decades but many countries still lack the expertise or have limited access to technology to overcome this problem. The control of invasive species can be difficult, if not impossible, making prevention particularly important. The invasion of alien species continues to cause biodiversity loss and can have negative economic impacts. “

WSJ has this up wherein this: “Stephen McIntyre, who has emerged as one of the climate change gang’s Most Dangerous Apostates.”
Canadian Stephen McIntyre is an apostate?
Apostate: “ā€“noun
1. a person who forsakes his religion, cause, party, etc.*”
…-
“Revenge of the Climate Laymen
Global warming’s most dangerous apostate speaks out about the state of climate change science.
By ANNE JOLIS
Barack Obama conceded over the weekend that no successor to the Kyoto Protocol would be signed in Copenhagen next month. With that out of the way, it may be too much to hope that the climate change movement take a moment to reflect on the state of the science that is supposedly driving us toward a carbon-neutral future.
But should a moment for self-reflection arise, campaigners against climate change could do worse than take a look at the work of Stephen McIntyre, who has emerged as one of the climate change gang’s Most Dangerous Apostates. The reason for this distinction? He checked the facts.
The retired Canadian businessman, whose self-described “auditing” a few years ago prompted a Congressional review of climate science, has once again thrown EnviroLand into a tailspin. In September, he revealed that a famous graph using tree rings to show unprecedented 20th century warming relies on thin data. Since its publication in 2000, University of East Anglia professor Keith Briffa’s much-celebrated image has made star appearances everywhere from U.N. policy papers to activists’ posters. Like other so-called “hockey stick” temperature graphs, it’s an easy sellā€”one look and it seems Gadzooks! We’re burning ourselves up!
“It was the belle of the ball,” Mr. McIntyre told me on a recent phone call from Ontario. “Its dance card was full.”” (More)

“Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.” Euripides Greek tragic dramatist (484 BC – 406 BC)
It would seem to me from reading the history that I have read, a good deal of it, there is indeed a “tipping point” for all civilizations which destroy themselves (sans extreme natural forces). That is the tipping point between reasonable sanity and insanity of the people as a whole of said civilization. When the balance goes to a certain point towards the insanity side, the civilization continues to move in the way which will destroy it. Historians may point to a minor force here or there, which may or may not have had anything to do with the balance, but it is always the insanity factor weighing against the sanity factor and the balance thereof.
It is clear which side of the balance this woman is on.

Slightly OT but definitely climate craziness from BBC Scotland and two academics who should know much better – first Dr Dave Reay from Edinburgh University, taliking about the future impact of climate change on Scotland:
“Are we prepared for more skin cancer if people go out in the sun more, are kids prepared to carry on learning in higher summer temperatures or will schools have to shut down?
The highest summer temperatres in Scotland get to are about 28C – even with their nightmare 6C increase it would be still be below typical summer daytime temperatures in most of southern Europe (and California, Arizona, Texas, Florida etc). How will our poor little children ever cope?
But worse from the Met Office’s Professor Julia Slingo who ends the article with the astonishingly arrogant statement:
“The fact that we have a few people who don’t accept the science but aren’t able to provide us with evidence of why we’re wrong, I think we should just not listen to them.”
See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8364319.stm for full article.
As a BBC license fee payer, and taxpayer who funds the UK Met Office, I am truly disgusted by this appalling example of so called journalism and so called science. And Edinburgh University should seriously consider sacking Reay if he continues with this alarmist boll*cks in the run up to Copenhagen.

Yes Bill, if she had a public email address I would send her the list of the 450 skeptical peer-reviewed papers to ponder –
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/11/15/reference-450-skeptical-peer-reviewed-papers/
This is how she describes her role in her new position as the Met Office Chief Scientist:
“I am responsible for providing scientific and technical strategy; ensuring the organisation adheres to good scientific and technical standards and directing and managing research and development with the Met Office. I also represent the office, on science and technology, across government. ” – http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/board/executive_info.html
I wonder how she squares the “adherance to good scientific and technical standards” with her statement in the BBC Scotland report?

Well, this is science at work. Release a compressed gas rapidly (From a compressed cylinder. Oh I wonder how that was made?), it makes a “noise” (LMAO) as you open the valve (I wonder how that was made?) too quickly. And then the expelled gas “freezes” the air (Arround the nozzle) at the nozzle exit.
Art has no rules. (Shame they are trying to describe a scientific PoV). FAIL!
My arty friend in the UK just does not see it, and seh still used gas welding in her “art”. Go figure!

Probably this has been mentioned in the long column of responses but the CO2 in the cylinder has been taken out of the air somewhere else and re-released – there is no carbon footprint at all – she paid twice – but it does show what ignorant Luddites are getting press for.

Central and eastern South Africa is currently experiencing abnormal cold and miserable temperatures and rain, some places have recorded temperatures 10 degrees (C) below average.
O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for example recorded 13 degrees maximum, when the average for this time is around 24. Snow is falling in the mountains which is unheard of in November.
Obviously the media hints towards “global warming” as the cause.
The public isn’t buying it. The freezing weather should generate some more skepticism.
