This morning I walked across the fresh snow with a gas cylinder in my arms, containing 6kg of CO2. I took it across the unspoiled snow field of the Jakobshavn Fjord until I found what, to my eyes, was a wonderful place.
From a little hill I could see massive icebergs impassably floating by, some of them breaking up from time to time with a loud bang. The sea below was deep grey, which made the icebergs stand up in all their beauty and fragility. The sky was a merge of pale grey and cerulean with a yellow glow just behind the skyline. Lichen and small berry plants could be felt under the powdery snow as I walked by. I thought this is perfect!
I walked to the top of the small hill, I put the cylinder down, got on my knees and opened the valve. The CO2 came out violently, freezing the air around the nozzle and producing an unpleasant whistle. When I lowered the cylinder towards the ground, the snow blow off all around me under the pressure of the air jet, almost to signify the melting of the Arctic ice shelf because of the Carbon emissions generated somewhere else.

I think it’s sort of a protest performance. She goes on to say in her blog how appalling the notion of buying offsets is since it doesn’t really stop the offending behavior. All intended to make us think about the fallacy of the concept of carbon offsets. Similar points have been made by many AGW skeptics.
Sounds like an environmental “purist” making a mockery of the cap-and-trade concept.

You either reduce your own emissions, or pay for somebody else to reduce theirs. How does it matter who does it, so long as the total amount of emissions goes down?
The main shortfall of offsets is making sure the emissions reduction you’re paying for wouldn’t have happened anyway. That gets tricky.

Well , after reading as much of the Disko Bay site as I could stomach – which wasn’t a lot – I’ve concluded that these people are nuts . If K T Turnstall really wanted to protest carbon emissions , she swould quit touring , stop using electricity , and freeze her ( rather cute ) ass off in Scotland .

The cylinder didn’t generate any CO2 emissions. Someone pumped the CO2 into the cylinder and you let it out. All you did was waste all the energy that was used to fill it.
BTW, this was from 2008 and the expedition was a bunch a celebrities (and thier hangers-on) wasting energy and polluting the west coast of Greenland for a few weeks to show their concern about the environment.

Dear Carrot, there are a few more problems then that. Do you not have to know in fact that any reductions paid for actually happen at all. Also it would be helpful to know that reductions were really even needed. The world of 280PPM would need 20% more water to grow the amount of food we do today with 380PPM CO2

So, using her own “logic” the very “expedition” these eco-loons was on is also “Eco-vandalism”. Have they given any consideration to what must certainly be a monstrous “carbon footprint” or “eco-footprint” for this jolly? Hmm, it’s my understanding that these carbon-credit (absolution) companies aren’t really engaged in reducing emissions rather increasing emission absorption(planting trees, plankton seeding and the like.) Some companies sell future planting of trees. If some are actually engaged in reducing emissions, it would be news to me. But I don’t believe that is the point of all the hysteria to begin with.

…P.S. by *real* stuff, I mean science (as opposed to gossip) at the cutting edge. For example, today’s issue of Nature has at least two articles that look well worth a detailed discussion or two.
First we have “A limit on the variation of the speed of light arising from quantum gravity effects”, something that strikes at the very heart of what we think we know about reality. Good old Lubos has had a couple of insightful pieces on this work, but how about something here for us uneducated masses.
And second, I see this paper: “Reconstruction of the history of anthropogenic CO2 concentrations in the ocean”. Surely more worthy of serious discussion on this site than something about someone waving a tank of whatever, wherever??

Since the Dadaists began the Contemporary Art movement, ending the Modern Art movement, they do stuff like this. See, this art Critic with a capital C named Greenberg once lived who told everybody in proper marxist revolutionary terminology, how Abstract was true Art because it didn’t represent anything in the real world, he said “Art exists for its own sake, it is not a window, but an object.” This defined Modern Art.
Then the Dadaists came along who called bull$hit on that, that that was all absurd, and they demonstrated that by creating absurd art: made from garbage, performance art of nonsense syllables in carboard costumes, etc. until one guy took Greenbergs maxim to its ultimate, absurdly logical conculsion, that if art is an object, then objects are art, so he took a toilet and stuck it on a wall and called it art.
Our faithful artist here we see is illustrating what she thinks is the absurdity of carbon trading: akin to an exchange for indulgences, where all people are expected to do some bad, and if they do less than expected, they can sell the margin to those who do more than expected, and it all comes out even in the end, and based on the assumption that doing more evil is more profitable than doing less evil, and that this should be actively balanced out by this faux free market scheme on trading in Sin as sin is defined by the Church of Global Warming.

And I have to say, I think that might have been the missing explanation that I have been searching for to convince me man-made CO2 is destroying the planet: its amazing how succinct the pro-warming scientific argument can be! Who needs to fabricate a Hockey Stick graph when you can just take a stroll and burp a little CO2 into the atmosphere to prove your case!
Personally I think she should have used Helium instead, and then she could have talked in a funny squeaky voice, and it would have been comedy as well as art; doubly powerful!
But on a serious note, I think weāve all missed a major issue here: with poor old Martin Luther turning in his grave at the resurgence of prepaid indulgences. In his day, you could pay a priest and get an indulgence, which covered you for sins you were about to commit, like advanced Confession, but paying a bit of money rather than having to actually confess, and getting the forgiveness in advance to make sure you were covered. In this way, seriously religious people (and in those days people took religious obligations very seriously) could commit murder and all form of other sins with a pre-forgiveness piece of paper in their pocket. The whole Reformation took off of the basis that this was bad, wrong, corrupt, evil, terrible, and travesty et hoc genus omne, ad nauseum.

Carbon offsets, what a joke. Since we all breathe out CO2 it means that those who breathe out more must contribute more CO2 to the atmosphere. Perhaps marathon runners should buy carbon offsets. Any marathon runner want to contact me and sell them an offset whereby I guarantee to bury the weeds from my garden and not burn them in an incinerator. For a few quid extra I will guarantee not to buy a BBQ.

It would seem to me from reading the history that I have read, a good deal of it, there is indeed a “tipping point” for all civilizations which destroy themselves (sans extreme natural forces). That is the tipping point between reasonable sanity and insanity of the people as a whole of said civilization. When the balance goes to a certain point towards the insanity side, the civilization continues to move in the way which will destroy it. Historians may point to a minor force here or there, which may or may not have had anything to do with the balance, but it is always the insanity factor weighing against the sanity factor and the balance thereof.
It is clear which side of the balance this woman is on.

It could very be that the UN is buying it’s credits from the carbon fund which owned by the chief of the IPCC.
That would be a case of conflict of interest, in other words “plain fraud”.

Well, this is science at work. Release a compressed gas rapidly (From a compressed cylinder. Oh I wonder how that was made?), it makes a “noise” (LMAO) as you open the valve (I wonder how that was made?) too quickly. And then the expelled gas “freezes” the air (Arround the nozzle) at the nozzle exit.

Probably this has been mentioned in the long column of responses but the CO2 in the cylinder has been taken out of the air somewhere else and re-released – there is no carbon footprint at all – she paid twice – but it does show what ignorant Luddites are getting press for.
What a waste. That was probably 50 dollars worth of CO2. That could have kept a dozen kegs of beer nicely carbonated.
Central and eastern South Africa is currently experiencing abnormal cold and miserable temperatures and rain, some places have recorded temperatures 10 degrees (C) below average.
O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for example recorded 13 degrees maximum, when the average for this time is around 24. Snow is falling in the mountains which is unheard of in November.
Obviously the media hints towards “global warming” as the cause.
The public isn’t buying it. The freezing weather should generate some more skepticism.
It is strange, as SA should be experiencing heat and dry weather now due to El Nino. Apparently temperatures should climb next week.
