A few years ago I had some Australian friends visiting, we went to a zoo where the Joey’s were jumping around in the snow.
They were amazed and stated that they did not know Joey’s could handle the cold conditions of Europe.

The image seems to have been taken in June 2007, that’s Australian winter two years ago. Snow may or may not still be rare for Australia, but this photo does not seem to be of this year’s Australian summer.

Australia is a continent as is roughly the same size as the lower 48. There are many Hills that are covered in snow during the winter season. There are a huge amount of cross country skiable areas in the snowfields. There is a derivation of the wallaby that lives in the mountains that is even labeled “snow wallabies”.
Australia has seen white Christmas’s. (Summer Season).
The Australian mainland recently saw a April low temperature of -13 degrees Celsius.
Tasmania (A State of Australia in case you didn’t know) has an overlooking mountain that regularly sees summer snow.
To cap it all, I’ve just been banned from Real Climate for denialist cherry-picking and deliberately confusing Weather with Climate!

But please DO NOTE that the NSIDC ice build-up “down-under” is getting bigger and bigger and bigger. I am sure those ice shelves that were supposed to break-off and make the sea level rise are now mending quite nicely as ice is now very much above “normal”….just like last year.

Richard Sharpe I am a Canberra resident and have seen a fall of snow here, but not much. I read something about Canberra being closed down due to snow for two to three days. I have not been able to confirm it though. Lake George has a little water in the distance (toward Bungedore) which you can see when you get up on the hills towards Gundaroo. I remember it lapping the road and a yacht club about 50 years ago. My Aunt remembers it as dry as it is now in 1931. The farmers who own the lake bed are well pleased and there are flocks of sheep on it now.
Alas, I can’t feel my kiwifruit.
Um, you people do know that Australia gets winter and that we have mountains don’t you. Here’s a hint – the highest region of the Great Dividing range is called the ‘Snowy Mountains’. I’ve gone cross country skiing there in Spring since the the mid eighties. Even in summer you have to be prepared for extreme weather including occasional snow and sub-zero temperatures.
The post in the foreground of that photo has a reflector on top, indicating that it is above the snow line. You don’t see that design deployed anywhere else.
However, there has been a significant decrease in snowfall in recent decades – approximately a 40% decrease over the last 40 years according to this Bureau of Meteorology page.
Even though we Victorians saw temperatures climb to the ridiculous record of 48°C this past summer, a winter without snow is an event beyond imagining for decades to come.

Yeah, I remember in the ’70s and ’80s that the water was up to maybe 100 to 200 feet from the roadway, but when I drove that way in 2005 all you could see when you came to Lake George from the Hume Highway was a small amount of water far in the distance.
However, I have heard that it goes in cycles. I also heard that snow had fallen in Canberra in the early ’70s or maybe in the late ’60s (I got off a plane from Darwin in early February ’75) …

Yes, yesterday in the hills behind Waimate, in the South Island of New Zealand, where there are plenty of introduced wallabies and much snow to low levels.

This is in the Tinderry Mtns southeast of Canberra at a altitude of 1350 metres.
We can have snow any time of the year but the last two winters have been generous in terms of snow.
It was a great surprise to see a photo I had taken appear in WUWT.
I can now claim that I have been published in a influential publication!
The fence is a bare bones affair mainly to mark the boundary.
It is amazing the number of people who will come up and think that it is just vacant crown land and do as they feel fit eg shooting, wood carting, bike riding etc.
But it still beats living in the city!

that photo was taken near Captainsflat (20km east from Queanbeyan) in 2007. 5-15cm on all hills east of Canberra and QBN with light snow falling in town but not hanging around.

the caption still implies that the photo was taken in summertime (“returned there for the summer”). As it was taken in June, that’s Australian winter, high in the mountains at an elevation of about 1350m / 4500 ft above sea level as Allan (23:48:08) reported.
REPLY: I know this, I’m not unaware. He was in the USA, when that “is” summer. I’m just passing on what was in the email, which was pun intended. This is why it is in quotes. Gosh who knew so many people could make such a fuss over a funny photo. What next, threats? 😉 – Anthony

I would not consider either Captains Flat nor the Tinderry Mountains as part of the Snowy Mountains. They are both a little to the east of Canberra and a little south of Canberra.
I would consider the Snowy mountains to be further south and more to the west and near the Victorian border, but other Australians might disagree with me. I dunno.
I do think that it is unusual, and I have lived in Canberra and spent time backpacking both in Winter and Summer in the Snowy Mountains, but that was back in the ’70s and early ’80s.

Good that you and people who read all of the comments know this – Richard Sharpe still seems to be confused, though. How about those readers, who read the article only? How many know the nationalities of the persons involved? The only season mentioned unsuspecting readers see is “summer” in a lengthy quote. I do not think, many will get this as a “pun” indicator. Consider this an effort in QA.
I had a look at the link provided (02:20:07) and was astonished to see photos of my house that I had taken.

I corrected my original mistake of date at 00:49:51.
Captains Flat is 27 km’s to the North East from where the photo was taken.
Fact still remains that we have received more snow in the Tinderries over the past two years than we had the proceeding decade.

The highest mountain in Australia is some 2,200/7300 feet high, and there are much higher ones in the state I currently live in.
Sure, it was taken in early winter, but it is still unusual from my perspective as someone who has lived there, and it serves as a useful antidote to the ridiculous AGW claims put about.

It actually does appear to be a wallaby. Wallabies are generally smaller than Kangaroos. I could be wrong but I would put my money on a wallaby.

On the contrary, I’m heartily enjoying the wonderful display of ignorance and arrogance in the above. Makes me realise quite how you won the “science” blog of the year and also how willing your readership is to have the wool pulled over their eyes and how hard they try to keep it there.
If you can “mis-speak” on such a trivial matter as the year & season of this photo, what hope is there for when you “mis-speak” anywhere else in your blog?

What I’ve learned here is that I won’t trust another’s word again on photo provenance and that you dislike me and the readers here for making a simple mistake, which comes off as petty. Show me a scientist, a journalist, an engineer, or even a doctor who has never made a mistake, and you might have a point. What is important is how you deal with the mistake. A note on the science blog award. It is voted by readers. If this blog is so bad, and so full of ignorance I doubt that I would have beaten RC and all of the others that have that air of perfection you seek. WUWT is admittedly imperfect, as am I, as are the readers. However, we all must be doing something right because readership and traffic continue to grow, while competitors and also-ran-ters stay static or drop. Your dislike is noted as it was the first time. 100km north of me (in southeast Saskatchewan) it snowed 18cm yesterday with barely a flake here and yes there was a coinciding Jabba the Gore sighting. As for Science Blog awards, you deserve one for not prostituting the phrase “tipping point”.

Nobody’s perfect, and mistakes will happen. But it’s not just photos that should be viewed with more scepticism. Some of the stories that get repeated on WUWT also need a more critical eye.
Two of the most egregious over the past year have been the Monckton-APS claim and the story about influential Japanese scientists supposedly questioning climate change.

If true, both of these stories would have been explosive. The fact that neither had been featured in the mainstream media should have given pause for thought, since any competent mainstream editor would have immediately spotted the news value of these items. The fact that WUWT apparently sleepwalked into these controversies points to a flaw in its editorial process.
Speculating, I think the problem sprang from two attitudes: 1) Climate sceptics believed the mainstream media is biased and willing to suppress important facts; 2) Climate sceptics were unwilling to subject climate scepticism to critical scrutiny.
Arguably, the cold shoulder that Christopher Monckton experienced in Washington recently was a result of the APS debacle, so getting it right is to your own advantage.
