WUWT reader David Summers sends this photo along taken a few days ago in 2007 in Australia from a colleague that “returned there for the summer”. I thought it might make a fun photo caption exercise.

Note: This photo as represented to me in email, was supposedly recent.

Thanks to alert WUWT reader “snow captain of queanbeyanobviously now that is not the case.  So much for trusting friendly emails from people. The photo was originally taken in 2007 and you can see the details here.

Still, as originally intended, feel free to make a fun photo caption.

Sorry no caption, but interestingly James Packer has just committed to a big investment in a new Skiing village at the Australian ski resort of Perisher and is extending the lease to 40 years. Just last year we were being warned that skiing in Australia was doomed due to GW. Perhaps James Packer has not heard of AGW!

Once a jolly swagman sat beside the billabong,
Under the shade of a coulibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and he waited till his billy boiled:
Chorus:
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
These dud carbon credits, these dud carbon credits
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
And he sang as he watched and he waited till his billy boiled,
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
2. Down came a jumbuck to drink beside the billabong
Up jumped the swagman and seized him with glee
And he sang as he tucked the jumbuck in his tuckerbag
Chorus:
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
These dud carbon credits, these dud carbon credits
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
And he sang as he tucked the jumbuck in his tuckerbag
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
3. Down came the stockman, riding on his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three.
“Where’s that jolly jumbuck you’ve got in your tuckerbag?
Chorus:
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
These dud carbon credits, these dud carbon credits
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
“Where’s that jolly jumbuck you’ve got in your tuckerbag?
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
4. Up jumped the swagman and plunged into the billabong,
“You’ll never catch me alive,” cried he
And his ghost may be heard as you ride beside the billabong,
Chorus:
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
These dud carbon credits, these dud carbon credits
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?
And his ghost may be heard as you ride beside the billabong,
Who’ll buy these dud carbon credits from me?

“So this is what Wikipedia means by Global Warming!”
Snippy, I know… but I just got done dealing with the fact that the Jevons Paradox page that ought to deal with a HISTORICAL definition has been turned into another Green Langoliers re-write of the past to match The Agenda…
This pains me a great deal (as I’ve been a supporter of the Intellectual Barn Raising aspect of Wiki… My Amish roots and all…) It pains me greatly to have to say that:
To whomever it was that disparaged Wiki, and I came to their defense, I’m sorry, I was wrong and you were right.
BTW, I’ve “ranted” about the Jevons Paradox page rewrite in my edited copy of the wiki page here:
http://chiefio.wordpress.com/2009/05/12/jevons-paradox-coal-oil-conservation/
So for any PRIOR posting of mine that referenced the wiki page, that page no longer exists. The closest I can come is my link just above.
For the future, it would seem that if ANYONE wants to include a wikipedia link to reference something, they first must save the page somewhere so that in the future their pointer does not end up pointing to a re-write that subverts and disparages their position…
Sigh.
How about:

Australia is a continent as is roughly the same size as the lower 48. There are many Hills that are covered in snow during the winter season. There are a huge amount of cross country skiable areas in the snowfields. There is a derivation of the wallaby that lives in the mountains that is even labeled “snow wallabies”.

A spokesman for Skippy was quoted “that after spending a lifetime of catching crooks, rescuing people lost in the bush, finding food and feeding the hungry, and saving the worthy, Skippy saw this as a natural progression of his super hero status.
“I mean why do you need politicians full of hot air, when if you truly believe in skippy, he will solve all.”

Breaking News – Arctic Killer Roo eats Caitlin Expedition.
For weeks Pen Hadow and his team had been trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Polar Bears from the Arctic. Initially measurements indicated something strange was happening to the Polar Bear population and that global conglomerate Coca Cola had been implicated in the poisoning of the poor animals’ environment by adding CO2 to their beverages. Recently the US administration added the Polar Bear to endangered species list and banned diet coke (a Polar Beer favorite). This latest report, however, suggests that the Polar Bears’ demise is possibly down to a mysterious predator which has been stalking the Arctic. In an amazing twist of fate, man made global warming has allowed a new form of species to evolve and go on walkabout – the Killer Wallaby. Worse than “Out of Africa” this “Out of Australia” menace is proving more dastardly than John Howard (who once put his arm around the Queen). We go live to Prince Charles (a personal friend of Pen Hadow), “It is with great sadness that I report that the entire North Pole Expotition, led by my dear friend Pen Hadow, have all been eaten by a mysterious Killer Roo some 600 miles from reaching their goal. All we have is this photo that was recovered from a camera found at the team’s abandoned camp.”

May 12, 2009 7:13 pm

This one is not fair. It is indeed the beginning of the Australian winter. …ya know they are in the SOUTHERN hemisphere. So saying the guy was going there to return there for the summer is silly. It is their very late fall. I scanned the comments and no one seems to says this. Their official winter starts at the end of June…so it is more than normal for snow there this time of the year.
But please DO NOTE that the NSIDC ice build-up “down-under” is getting bigger and bigger and bigger. I am sure those ice shelves that were supposed to break-off and make the sea level rise are now mending quite nicely as ice is now very much above “normal”….just like last year.

Richard Sharpe I am a Canberra resident and have seen a fall of snow here, but not much. I read something about Canberra being closed down due to snow for two to three days. I have not been able to confirm it though. Lake George has a little water in the distance (toward Bungedore) which you can see when you get up on the hills towards Gundaroo. I remember it lapping the road and a yacht club about 50 years ago. My Aunt remembers it as dry as it is now in 1931. The farmers who own the lake bed are well pleased and there are flocks of sheep on it now.

Um, you people do know that Australia gets winter and that we have mountains don’t you. Here’s a hint – the highest region of the Great Dividing range is called the ‘Snowy Mountains’. I’ve gone cross country skiing there in Spring since the the mid eighties. Even in summer you have to be prepared for extreme weather including occasional snow and sub-zero temperatures.
The post in the foreground of that photo has a reflector on top, indicating that it is above the snow line. You don’t see that design deployed anywhere else.
However, there has been a significant decrease in snowfall in recent decades – approximately a 40% decrease over the last 40 years according to this Bureau of Meteorology page.
Even though we Victorians saw temperatures climb to the ridiculous record of 48°C this past summer, a winter without snow is an event beyond imagining for decades to come.

Yeah, I remember in the ’70s and ’80s that the water was up to maybe 100 to 200 feet from the roadway, but when I drove that way in 2005 all you could see when you came to Lake George from the Hume Highway was a small amount of water far in the distance.
However, I have heard that it goes in cycles. I also heard that snow had fallen in Canberra in the early ’70s or maybe in the late ’60s (I got off a plane from Darwin in early February ’75) …

A lightning storm in 1961 created firestorms that, if allowed to burn unhindered, could have burned out most of the Snowy Mountains. Many of the worst fire complexes of recent decades included multiple starts from lightning. The 1951–52 fires — the last time a giant fire struck the ACT — were caused by lightning.
In the 1970s, lightning caused 24 per cent of all fires in Victoria and was
responsible for 60 per cent of all the acreage lost, and a single lightning
storm in 1972 ignited 39 fires in rugged terrain. About 80 per cent of
fires in western Queensland were due to lightning strikes. About 97 per
cent of the area burned in 1974 — about 15 per cent of Australia —
was due to lightning. Pyne said the evidence testified to the power of
lightning to kindle fire in almost every environment.

Why do you think they’re called the Snowy Mountains, Anthony?

Hmmm, we have conflicting info. One claims Captains Flat, the other:

It was taken 4th November 2007 (late spring in the Stn Hemisphere)
Location 35deg 45 mins 48 sec South, 149 deg 17 mins 13 sec West.
This is in the Tinderry Mtns southeast of Canberra at a altitude of 1350 metres.

I do not believe that Captain’s Flat is part of the Snowy Mountains. And I would not have called the Tinderry Mountains part of the Snowy Mountains as well. Both of those places are a little to the East and South of Canberra while what I would consider the Snowy Mountains are to the West of Canberra and further to the South (and closer to the Victorian border).
However, it is possible that others might disagree with me.
I find it highly surprising that snow fell in that area, but I imagine that old timers would be able to tell me of times when it has in the past as well.
The times are also conflicting. One claims June, just before the onset of Winter in Australia, the other claims November, well after Winter.

Richard Sharpe

Another claim is:

As it was taken in June, that’s Australian winter, high in the mountains at an elevation of about 1350m / 4500 ft above sea level as Allan (23:48:08) reported.

However, there are conflicting locations and times claimed for that photo.
One claims that it is at Captains Flat, the other in the Tinderry Mountains. One claims June and a little before Winter starts in Australia, the other claims November, but both in 2007.
I would not consider either Captains Flat nor the Tinderry Mountains as part of the Snowy Mountains. They are both a little to the east of Canberra and a little south of Canberra.
I would consider the Snowy mountains to be further south and more to the west and near the Victorian border, but other Australians might disagree with me. I dunno.
I do think that it is unusual, and I have lived in Canberra and spent time backpacking both in Winter and Summer in the Snowy Mountains, but that was back in the ’70s and early ’80s.

My objection was to the claim that that photo was taken in the Snowy Mountains and that it was “high in the mountains” as if this, in some way, invalidates the obvious unusualness of the image.
Both of those claims are incorrect from my perspective.
The highest mountain in Australia is some 2,200/7300 feet high, and there are much higher ones in the state I currently live in.
Sure, it was taken in early winter, but it is still unusual from my perspective as someone who has lived there, and it serves as a useful antidote to the ridiculous AGW claims put about.

What I’ve learned here is that I won’t trust another’s word again on photo provenance and that you dislike me and the readers here for making a simple mistake, which comes off as petty. Show me a scientist, a journalist, an engineer, or even a doctor who has never made a mistake, and you might have a point. What is important is how you deal with the mistake. A note on the science blog award. It is voted by readers. If this blog is so bad, and so full of ignorance I doubt that I would have beaten RC and all of the others that have that air of perfection you seek. WUWT is admittedly imperfect, as am I, as are the readers. However, we all must be doing something right because readership and traffic continue to grow, while competitors and also-ran-ters stay static or drop. Your dislike is noted as it was the first time. Thank you. – Anthony

Worst Wallaby hangover ever!
Red-necked Wallaby sees white and has blue thoughts about Al Gore.
Red-necked Wallaby: free, Snow: free, Making fun of global warming: priceless.

100km north of me (in southeast Saskatchewan) it snowed 18cm yesterday with barely a flake here and yes there was a coinciding Jabba the Gore sighting. As for Science Blog awards, you deserve one for not prostituting the phrase “tipping point”.

Anthony: “What I’ve learned here is that I won’t trust another’s word again on photo provenance…”
Nobody’s perfect, and mistakes will happen. But it’s not just photos that should be viewed with more scepticism. Some of the stories that get repeated on WUWT also need a more critical eye.
Two of the most egregious over the past year have been the Monckton-APS claim and the story about influential Japanese scientists supposedly questioning climate change.

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/02/25/japans-society-of-energy-and-resources-disses-the-ipcc-says-recent-climate-change-is-driven-by-natural-cycles-not-human-industrial-activity/
If true, both of these stories would have been explosive. The fact that neither had been featured in the mainstream media should have given pause for thought, since any competent mainstream editor would have immediately spotted the news value of these items. The fact that WUWT apparently sleepwalked into these controversies points to a flaw in its editorial process.
Speculating, I think the problem sprang from two attitudes: 1) Climate sceptics believed the mainstream media is biased and willing to suppress important facts; 2) Climate sceptics were unwilling to subject climate scepticism to critical scrutiny.
Arguably, the cold shoulder that Christopher Monckton experienced in Washington recently was a result of the APS debacle, so getting it right is to your own advantage.

What happened to the sunburnt country?
and the land of sweeping plains.
Since we started cap and trade,
There’s snow and flooding rains!
(apologies to Dorothy Mackellar)
