Josh writes: Michael Mann has a book out called “The Madhouse Effect” with cartoons by Tom Toles, and which was the subject of a WUWT post back in April.
It looks like it’s a summary of every alarmist strawman and lots of name calling of sceptics – well, I guess that’s all they got. Just in case you want to order it and comment/review it, it is on Amazon here. If you do review it, at least buy the Kindle version so the review is by a “verified purchaser”, unlike so many reviews received for the Climate Change: The Facts book which were negative, but hadn’t actually read the book.
BTW, a new version, Climate Change: The Facts 2017 is in the works.
Speaking of mad alarmism, ‘The Stern Review’ is now ten years old. There is a new GWPF report on it, out today, written by UK MP Peter Lilley and the economist Prof Richard Tol, which is well worth reading. You can download it here.

If you haven’t read it yet, this book is eye opening:
The problem with the left/progressives/green/whatevertheyarethisweek, is that they don’t actually have a sense of humour. Their political correctness means that they can’t actually make fun of anyone…wait.
Yes, they do make fun of their “enemies”, which I guess is most of us. Still, their humour can’t actually usually be measures as such, as it sounds so much like scolding most of the time.
Remember, these are the people that thought a TV commercial where classroom children were exploded was “funny”.
@CJ
Yr: “…it sounds so much like scolding most of the time.”
Tell me about it! And I mean, like, I can think of no better example than the most recent blog post, by Hotwhopper–everybody’s favorite, grump-normative weaponized-fusspot (Google: “hotwhopper where are the clowns”)–where she deploys her signature, “cat-whistle”, Gaia-bot lefty-cant to take trite, snotty swipes at Judith Curry and Anthony Watts, among others. I mean, like, Hotwhopper is a real piece of work, all right.
But I don’t want to be too hard on Hotwhopper, since although she does comes across, to us normal human beings, as a complete, busy-body, hive-tool grouch, she nevertheless seems to posses, in her own dotty way, a metaphorical, “cat-lady” big-heart, which she has opened up to those lefty-puke, socially-retarded, stray “pussies”, who regularly show up at her site to use the comments sections of her blog-posts as figurative “sand-boxes” for their “droppings”. At the same time, I really must point out (and I know this is a delicate matter) that Hotwhopper needs to be a little more attentive to her “kitty-litter” duties, since her blog is becoming more than a little bit “ripe”, here lately, and a blogospheric, bio-hazard public-nusiance.
I previously offered a comment on this thread, in reply to Caligula Jones, that I have since re-considered. May I respectfully ask the moderator not to publish that comment (it appears to still be in moderation). The high quality of the discussion in this thread would not be enhanced by my comment, IMHO, and I don’t want to detract from the same.
Mann and his misguided misanthropic minions will soon discover the “Jailhouse Effect”.
LOL.
“they do make fun of their enemies”
I don’t think you can characterize lies and libel backed by no more than self righteous indignation ‘making fun’ unless it’s making fun with criminal intent.
It is interesting when indignation actually meets litigation discovery, isn’t it?
If Mark Steyn actually doesn’t run out of money in the next decade, we’ll see this proven in spades.
Buy his stuff online. Crowd-funding will help keep him solvent.
I’ve got 2 copies of “Disgrace”, one for me and one which I lend out to my warmist acquaintances. My copy is well-thumbed, the other is still in pristine condition, being virtually un-opened. There’s none so blind as those who will not see.
Yes, I offered to provide a well-reasoned article on the faults of Climate Change (TM) to a true-believer friend. He said sure, he’d read it, so I got a copy to him. Several weeks later, he admitted he hadn’t read it, and wasn’t going to.
They don’t want to look at any ideas new to them. Pity.
Might cause his entire worldview and value system to crumble, so we can’t have any of that now, can we.
Which was the article? I keep meeting people who trot out the 97% mantra. Pretty sure they wouldn’t read it.
When I told my CAGW friend that glaciers were receding long before the industrial age, his reply was: “Look, I know you lean to the right and I am more left of center, your not going to change my mind.” The subject has truly become a religion or a political identity. Whatever it is, it sure isn’t based on debating the facts.
There is one critical review already there… and he was attacked by the cargo cult followers.
The reviews are all way too long to be real people…..
Cartoons are appropriate when it comes to characterizing Mann, Nuccittelli, and the rest of the climate-change gang. That’s because they seem to have a comic book mentality. In their minds, CO2 is a super villain. There is absolutely nothing under our yellow sun that it cannot do, unless slowed by the kryptonite of green energy.

Piper Paul,
Here’s another good source of cartoons.
wow! that site has some awesome satire, db
This is how Amazon portray the book:-
“The award-winning climate scientist Michael E. Mann and the Pulitzer Prize–winning political cartoonist Tom Toles have been on the front lines of the fight against climate denialism for most of their careers. They have witnessed the manipulation of the media by business and political interests and the unconscionable play to partisanship on issues that affect the well-being of billions. The lessons they have learned have been invaluable, inspiring this brilliant, colorful escape hatch from the madhouse of the climate wars.
The Madhouse Effect portrays the intellectual pretzels into which denialists must twist logic to explain away the clear evidence that human activity has changed Earth’s climate. Toles’s cartoons collapse counter-scientific strategies into their biased components, helping readers see how to best strike at these fallacies. Mann’s expert skills at science communication aim to restore sanity to a debate that continues to rage against widely acknowledged scientific consensus. The synergy of these two climate science crusaders enlivens the gloom and doom of so many climate-themed books―and may even convert die-hard doubters to the side of sound science.”
I feel so ashamed that I ever doubted the Sage From Penn State. I must atone .
“They have witnessed the manipulation of the media by business and political interests and the unconscionable play to partisanship on issues that affect the well-being of billions.”
More than anything else, this line shows they do not live in the same reality as the rest of the world. Who are they kidding? The MSM drum the alarmist beat constantly!
Truly delusional. These people literally have mental problems and need professional help. I say this not as an insult but clinically.
Dave – Not only have “They have witnessed the manipulation”, they have been the instigators of much of it.
And
“been on the front lines of the fight against climate denialism” – Denial of Natural Cycles. Check
“the manipulation of the media”- Yes they have. Check
“unconscionable play to partisanship on issues that affect the well-being of billions.” – How is your hydro rates doing up there? in the Billions yet? Check
“Mann’s expert skills at science communication continues to rage” – Check
“lessons they have learned have them in the madhouse” – Check
” intellectual pretzels into which they must twist logic to explain away the clear evidence” – Auntie Anne’s Pretzels ‘R’ Them – Check
“Mann’s expert skills at science communication continues to rage” – This guy really knows his MM’s. – Check
At least they got this part right, they’re not scientists. At least not in any normal definition of the word. Then again, it is post-normal science.
As a Penn Stater with grad degrees in petroleum and natural gas eng, Mann is a major embrassment!
They’ve been on the “front lines” the same way Darth Vader was on the “front lines”. Valiantly fighting for the Greenactic Empire, I guess.
Considering all the supporting briefs he got in support of his lawsuit, I’d “front lines” means “cannon fodder”.
Poor man, I mean mann, even some of his close colleagues are throwing him overboard.

Maybe his hockey stick will save him.
vukcevic:
I had not idea!
You should consider doing more graphics!
When I first read the description, the thought that crossed my mind was shunned. Manniacal followed closely by Wadhams are getting to be shunned by the climate team.
Still, I like Josh’s graphic better.
Wait, let me see if I understand this – Michael Mann professes to be an expert on Madhouses!?
Why not, seems less bizarre than him lecturing on ethics.
No. He’s an expert at getting mad at anyone who puts a crack in his Greenhouse.
Stern is another fraudster who should be spending time at her Majesty’s Pleasure.
I believe that you are mistaking a comment about Stern (the author of “The Stern Review”) for a comment about Steyn. Stern isn’t Steyn.
Steyn’s “A Disgrace to the Profession” is absolute gold, because all of the comments re:Mikey Mann come from other “climate professionals”
The unkindest cut of all, eh Brutus?
Yup. And best part is all gathered for use in Mann v. Steyn, a trial that will happen eventually.
Just out of curiosity, has Mad-Man-Mann sued anybody else since Steyne called him on his legal bluff and bluster?
I wonder if Trofim Lysenko ever resorted to these tactics. Genetics deniers might have made funny cartoons. Especially if Gary Larson had lived a previous life in Russia.
I dare say Toles’ cartoons would have found a welcome in Krokodil. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krokodil
Toles is vile and as ignorant as they come in regards to climate change. A total leftist hack job.
Mark Steyn. Now there’s a quality chap.
Had the pleasure to see and hear him at ICCC-10, June 2015 in the District of Corruption, where he delivered breakfast(?) remarks that almost made me pee my pants. Available at heartland.org under climate conferences and probably on You Tube. He discussed the lawsuit in his marque erasable style. LMFAO
But the best comments on freedom that I have heard in many years were made by Steyn in his address to the Institute of Public Affairs (Australia) this year. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hCtuGNRN1U. – or google it). Steyn’s assessment of the cumulative loss of freedom worldwide is chilling. and serious.
Mikey, “Am I here ‘cos I’m a disgrace to the profession, or is it ‘cos I’m a fraud, or it is ‘cos I’m a bully?”
Uh…. Yes.
Anyone know what on earth is happening with the Steyn case?
Any bets that Mann is angry at anybody voting for Trump because the Donald doesn’t suffer fools (those who believe in man-made global warming) gladly?
Here’s a weird quote from page 123:
“One other thing, by the way: reflecting more sunlight out to space before it ever reaches the surface of Earth means less potential for solar power, less availability of alternative energy. Geoengineering in this case would make even more difficult the already tough challenge of weaning ourselves off the fossil fuels that are at the very root of the problem we are trying to solve.”
Stern was on the BBC this morning spouting the usual stuff and not one challenge from the interviewer. The BBC has clearly lost it.
Gratefully, I only hear about the BBC. Sometimes not saying anything is the best course. I’m guilty as well of feeding the CAGW trolls. Endless arguments that lead nowhere. And if you defend yourself in the name calling department, you descend to their level. Then they post it on main stream media how skeptics are ” mean ” and avoid real science. When I read ” not one challenge” , I thought give em enough rope, and they’ll hang themselves.
Some of the ads on the site automatically pull the screen back to them every 20 seconds making it impossible to read the article.
Same thing happening to me. It is really quite annoying.
Some Mannian fun from the past:

In the words of C.S. Lewis, “Above all else, the devil cannot stand to be mocked.”
Mockery should be the main strategy for dealing with those who, in whatever way they try, strive to dominate and control the rest of us.
They make their threats seriously, but it is almost impossible for anyone to take them seriously while everyone is laughing at them.

Just look at what climate change caused by carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions have done to Canada already.
inre: Mark Steyn is Canadian

Ceta: EU-Canada trade deal to be signed on Sunday
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37806656
Trade deals with the European Union are full of restrictive environmental regulations, legislation from Brussels, tax harmonization, and are in reality a political union, as the UK has recently shown the world.
TTIP, or Transpacific Trade and Investment Partnership, is also a very very bad trade deal being drawn up in secret with the EUropean Union and the US. We must stay out of the EU.
This failing, flailing project — the EU — will need to prop up its banks and massive loans, and cover over the effects its devastating environmental legislation which destroys energy, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.
The only way the EU can survive is by taking in fresh dolts in pink shirts.
There is also TiSA, Trade in Services Agreement, which opens up any country to foreign companies who want to run any of the most vital parts of the Service sector of the economy.
That means any country will have to open up services to foreign companies, including mail service, waste water, telecommunications, water, and utilities. That means vital services would be run by multinationals.
For example we see this in the UK whose mail is run by Germany, and in Australia who have French companies running some of their water utilities.

For my latest video I took Michael Moore not Mann’s words and added music and stuff.
If you wish to hear Dr. Mann discuss his new book, he appeared on PRI’s Science Friday recently. Here is the link. http://www.sciencefriday.com/episodes/october-14-2016/
