Headed into 'Lew-world' in the U.K. – I could use your help

Yesterday, it was discovered that both John Cook and Michael Mann are headed to the Stephan Lewandowsky’s current place of trough feeding academic residence at the University of Bristol to give talks on Sept. 19th and 23rd. Since the talks are both free and open to the public, a number of people have already registered to attend. Yours truly is one of those people. If you have not already registered, you can do so here at this WUWT story: Calling all UK Skeptics – Free Talk with 97% Bias – plus the ability to ask questions.

Some people wondered why I’d bother to make such a trip, especially since both Cook and Mann aren’t likely to talk about anything of substance, but simply their own brand of science and consensus as they interpret it, plus Mann’s usual book plugs. It has some of the people over at “wackadoodle central” in a tizzy that I’m attending, and they want to know why I’m going. Well, that’s for me to know and them to find out.

In the meantime, I did the planning, I’ve reserved a flight to London, and I’ll make my way up to Bristol from there. The cost of the RT flight, accommodations, food, sundries, and rubber chicken props needed for attending these talks looks to easily top $2700.00.

So, I’m asking for some help to make this trip.

The silver lining here is that while I have met with climate skeptics at many conferences, and even did a speaking tour in Australia in 2010, I’ve never met any of the UK skeptics save Monckton, Delingpole, and briefly some in Brussels as Climategate was breaking, which caused me to spend much of that time locked in my room on the Internet working out what to do about it all and speaking to nobody about it. With the exception of a short layover at Heathrow in 2009, I haven’t been to the UK since I spent time doing some consulting for television weather presentation back in 1989 with the international company Weathernews, when I spent some time in London and also in Aberdeen. So, it is long overdue for me to visit, and this seemed as good a time as any.

This time, there will be time for a skeptics gathering in the UK, and I aim to help that happen while I’m there, as has been suggested on yesterday’s thread. Plus I will come fully equipped to make a presentation or two, should the opportunity present itself.

For me, this is a working trip, and I have a couple of goals to meet while I’m there. I’ll be in touch with some of your privately. Of course I’ll bring my video camera and post items of relevance here at WUWT along the way.

So, if you kind folks can pitch in to help defray travel expenses, because sadly, Exxon, B.P. and the Koch brothers STILL have not stepped up (though I keep hearing they have been sending scads of money my way, but for some reason I never see those checks in the mail), I can make this trip and accomplish a few things, have our own meeting, and see some people that I’m long overdue to meet and discuss business with.

Here’s the PayPal button-

UPDATE: Goal reached! THANK YOU EVERYONE!

You know what to do. Just a bunch of small donations is all that is needed to add up. For example if I got 100 people to give $30.00, that would do it. I wish I didn’t have to beg, but either all those claims about money I’m getting from big oil are bogus, or my postman is redirecting those checks in the mail elsewhere.

Thanks for your consideration, and as always, thanks for reading WUWT and standing up for climate reality.

Anthony

I hope you are contacting the Global Warming Policy Foundation and hopefully using the support of Lord Lawson to arrange a presentation in a committee room of the House of Lords. I believe that the use of such a room is free if it is booked by a Lord or a Memebr of Parliament. I am sure that you would get a good attendance for an evening meeting.

“A gathering of scientific men or of artists, owning to the mere fact that they form an assemblage, will not deliver judgments of general subjects sensibly different from those rendered by a gathering of masons or grocers.” – Gustave le Bon (The Crowd, 1895)
“It is what Zola calls “triomphe de la médiocrité.” Snobs, nobodies, take the place of workers, thinkers, artists; and it isn’t even noticed. The public, yes, one part of it is dissatisfied, but material grandeur also finds applause; however, do not forget that this is merely a straw fire, and that those who applaud generally do so only because it has become the fashion. But on the day after the banquet, there will be a void – a silence and indifference after all that noise.” – Vincent van Gogh (letter to Theo van Gogh, 1882)
“Many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” – Jesus of Nazareth
“A world that has been impoverished is in an instant ready to accept that this is the way it has always been. The unthinkable is taken for granted.” – Federico Fellini (I, Fellini, 2001)
“In the Dominican collection, was there not to be found a certain Doctor of Theology, Révérend Père Rouard de Card, a Preaching Brother, who in a brochure entitled:-”Of the Falsification of the Sacramental Substances,” has demonstrated beyond a doubt that the major part of Masses were null and void, by reason of the fact that the materials used in the rite were sophisticated by dealers? For years, the holy oil had been adulterated with goose-grease; the taper-wax with burnt bones; the incense with common resin and old benzoin. But worse than all, the substances indispensable for the holy sacrifice, the two things without which no oblation was possible, had likewise been falsified, – the wine by repeated dilutings and the illicit addition of Pernambuco barc, elder-berries, alcohol, alum, salicylate, litharge; the bread, that bread of the Eucarist that must be kneaded of the fine flour of wheat, by ground haricot-beans, potash and pipeclay! Nay, now they had gone further yet; they had dared to suppress the wheat altogether and shameless dealers manufactured out of potato meal nearly all the hosts! Now God declined to come down and be made flesh in potato flour.” – J. K. Huysmans (Against the Grain, 1883)
“Museums are just a lot of lies, and the people who make art their business are mostly imposters.” – Pablo Picasso (In “Picasso: Fifty Years of his Art” by A. H. Barr, Jr., 1946)
“Do you know that it is so very, very necessary for honest people to remain in art? I do not mean to say that there are none, but you feel what I mean, and know as well as I know many painters are inveterate liars.” – Vincent van Gogh (letter to Theo van Gogh, 1882)
“Modern Art has become completely literary: the paintings and other works exist only to illustrate the text.” – Tom Wolfe (The Painted Word, 1975)

Mr Watts, you are a powerful voice in the worldwide appeal to AGW sanity. Why not capitalise on your visit and make it a bit longer than just attending the Bristol University lecture. A quick press release on your UK visit to all the British media could well result in a few profitable interviews or TV appearances that would be good for the sceptic cause in the UK. Also, is it too late to organise a lecture in London while you are here with the audience paying a fee to attend? I would certainly travel to London for the purpose. All contributing to your exs. and making your visit worthwhile.

Very first thing that popped into my mind was that Mr Mann and co. will do everything in their power to make sure Mr Watts is banned from attending, or that they do not have to confront him.
Would it be possible for them to get a court order barring him from the premises as a known agitator and disruptive influence? I have seen nothing in Mr Mann’s past actions that would make me think he would not take this avenue.
On the other hand, also giving past performance, I can easily see him telling the organizers he will not attend as long as Mr Watts is in the same room. As he is a serious scientist and has no inclination to subject himself to the sort of abuse Mr Watts is well known for.
Not my opinion, in case it’s not clear from the way I expressed myself.
Seems to me in the past that many of the big names in the alarmist camp have ducked out of such confrontation at the last second.

Since you are going to face John Cook I thought you would be interested in how he handles opposing arguments. On 27 January 2010 he had an article on his web site with the title “The upcoming ice age has been postponed indefinitely.” I judged it to be a straw man argument and put in a comment demolishing it and a few other things he had been saying. The comment was posted as No. 30 on January 28th and I made a copy of it. But next time I looked he had erased half of it, leaving a distorted picture of what I had said. I protested and the entire comment was erased. Below is a copy of that comment. All statements in it are backed up in my book.
Comment submitted to the Skeptical Science on January 28th 2010 and erased by John Cook
30 • Arno Arrak at 11:13 AM on 28 January, 2010
An interesting straw man but I never saw anything in it. We live in an inter-glacial age and the next ice age will arrive in due course of time but not anytime soon. And AGW will not postpone it for a second because it doesn’t exist. I say this because the warming we have been told about is faked and the global temperatures published by NASA, NOAA, and the Met Office are all cooked. There is no anthropogenic global warming that is going to cook us and there never was any. Not even anthropogenic arctic warming. The present arctic warming is a result of a rearrangement of North Atlantic currents hundred twenty years ago that directed warm currents north and initiated the warming that is still going on. At present we have accurate global temperature records for the last thirty years measured by satellites. They are available from UAH MSU and RSS and both can be downloaded from the web. These records show that in the eighties and nineties global temperatures oscillated in a multiyear pattern, up and down by half a degree, but did not rise until 1998 showed up. But the same period is shown by NASA, NOAA, and HadCRUT3 from the UK as a period of steadily rising temperatures known as the “late twentieth century warming.” It is this warming whose continuation we are supposed to fight that is totally phony. But in 1988, right in the middle of it, James Hansen gets up and announces that global warming caused by the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide has arrived. With over ten television cameras trained on him he showed frightening temperature projections up to 2020, scared the press, the public, and the politicians, and put global warming on every TV set that night. That same year IPCC was established and the religion of global warming had its start. Checking the NOAA temperature chart we see that there was indeed warming that had started in 1977. But carbon dioxide had already been in the air for years by then and nothing special had happened in 1977 to change its behavior. It must have just opened its eyes one morning and decided that 1977 was a good year to start warming up the world. Natura non facit saltum as Newton used to say, but here is an exception right in front of the world. Science it is not, a miracle maybe, the founding miracle of the global warming cult. But Hansen apparently felt that ten years was a bit skimpy to base an earth-shaking theory on so he claimed that the warming had been going on for twenty five years. This is not what the NOAA temperature curve shows. Before 1975 no one had heard of global warming and people were worried about a coming ice age. But this problem does not exist if you realize that the warming itself is phony. To show that it actually is phony you must download the satellite temperature curves and the ground-based temperature curves as well and put both of them side by side on the same graph. The oscillations in satellite curves trace out the El Nino (warm) and La Nina (cool) phases of the ENSO system in the Pacific Ocean because ENSO has a global climate influence. Comparing them with ground based data you see that they all started by cherry picking the warm El Nino peaks. And then they raised up the intervening cool La Nina valleys to turn a horizontal temperature curve into a rising temperature curve. There is more falsification involved but to present these curves as “Global Temperature” curves is scientific fraud. And since all three organizations are doing it, in slightly different ways, it amounts to a criminal conspiracy as well. Some part of the billions of dollars spent on “climate research” should go towards investigating this climate change fraud. Climategate is only the tip of the iceberg but they do talk casually about altering temperature curves. The fraud involved in changing world temperatures is much bigger and obviously well hidden up to now. If you want all the details they are available in “What Warming?” on Amazon.com.

Blood clots in legs are nasty, and happen far more frequently than most people would guess. SIMPLE solution, to make sure there is movement of the legs once every hour, or somewhat better… (now, with the new/improved sardine packing..unless you go 1st class, it’s harder on your systems in your body to be “schrunced” in an even tighter seat than 20 years ago (1996, my last trip to England).

Mann? A serious scientist? Why doesn’t he do any actual science then? You know, as according to the scientific method, type science. As in formulate a hypothesis, then try to falsify it through experiment or observation and allow everyone else full access to his data and methods to allow them to do the same. IF his hypothesis is correct, it will survive such examination and testing.
Sadly he never, ever does that and I am still waiting for him to engage in any actual scientific process.

The photosynthesizers outnumber the humans, they would vote for more CO2 in the atmosphere. Any person who wants to reduce atmospheric CO2 is also trying to starve the trees.

I second Tom J above. You have earned the right to be heard in the UK. And to be thanked for work you have done to create and run WUWT
I am delighted to have made a small contribution to your expenses. PayPal is so easy to use!
I do hope you are able to arrange (or have arranged for you) a UK venue where your thousands of UK admirers can met you at last and hear your presentation in person.
Spectator Events, chaired by Andrew Neal, are always well attended and well ordered.

My only concern being that they know you are coming….

Just a bit of trivia for you.
The Cabot Institute is named after John Cabot, who is reputed to have discovered America. Cabot’s sponsor for the expedition was Richard Ameryk, after whom it is said that America was named. And the coat of arms of Richard Ameryk, was the stars and stripes.

Welcome to England, Anthony. Enjoy your visit.
For the life of me, as much as I try, I cannot think which, of many questions rattling round my brain, I would ask Cook or Mann. If I did manage to get to ask a question it would have to be one that I thought would get an answer, not an evasion.
When you’ve been and gone I hope you will share with us the questions you wanted to ask; the one(s) you did; and the answer(s) you got – or hoped to get.
BTW: Keep a count of how many times you get accused of being funded by ‘fossil-fuel’: You can counter with the sure and certain knowledge that your (donating) readers must all be ‘big oil’ apologists.

$100 done -good luck and I hope other well-known UK sceptics attend. I took my maths degree at Bristol (many years ago) and always reckoned it was one of the best in the UK, but recently their alumni magazine has had too much green and carbon footprint rubbish in it, so I’m becoming ashamed of it.
Still, I remember lots of good evenings at the Victoria rooms, so please help to make this event a memorable one.

Three points regarding the posting by NikfromNYC:
Firstly, the book, “Against the Grain” is a work of fiction. There never existed a Doctor of Theology, Révérend Père Rouard de Card and there never existed a brochure entitled:-”Of the Falsification of the Sacramental Substances,” except in that same work of fiction. (Look them up on the internet.)
Secondly, what is the point of posting such a quotation from this work of fiction on this website?
Thirdly, I note that NikfromNYC has posted the same quotation on the RealScience website.

Very pleased to know that you’ll be able to come to Bristol. I would really welcome the possibility of a gathering of people who really think about climate somewhere in the UK. Bristol? (people will be there already) London? Birmingham (central)? Manchester? Stratford or indeed anywhere. For me the date would have to be 21st Sept or later.

Incase nobody has mentioned, Christopher Booker, a journalist for the DT is a sceptic. Maybe worth getting in touch with. He wrote “The Real Global Warming Disaster”, published 2009 – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Real_Global_Warming_Disaster

Anthony,
Do not suffer in silence – literally – without assistance in hearing. Get one of your UK contacts – James Delingpole or Lord Monckton, to work with the “Action On Hearing Loss” organization that used to be called the Royal Institute for the Deaf. They have T-Coil loop systems for hire that use microphones near the speaker and a loop near you.
Do not expect fulsome help from Bristol University.

I just kicked in $100 to help you stay longer in the UK and enjoy more of your many friends there. Alice and I enjoyed meeting you and attending your panel at the Climate Change Conference in Las Vegas, and I’m sure our British cousins would enjoy a bit of the same from you. Cheers.

I guess if you are going to Bristol you could go take a visit to the ‘Somerset Levels’ which was the site of major flooding this winter past and is therefore the epicentre of what caused it (i.e. global warming vs lack of dredging vs lack of pumping vs lack of water-absorbing sinks at the watersheds etc etc). It’s about 1hr down the Interstate 5 (we call it the M5 over here) from Bristol. It certainly had some devastating effects for some farmers.

Wikipedia did not exist when I was told it as a fact at school decades ago. I wonder what the Americans were told at their schools?
Amerigo Vespucci was cartographer and travelled to the new world several times.
Encyclopaedia Britannica.
In 1507 a humanist, Martin Waldseemüller, reprinted at Saint-Dié in Lorraine the “Quattuor Americi navigationes” (“Four Voyages of Amerigo”), preceded by a pamphlet of his own entitled “Cosmographiae introductio,” and he suggested that the newly discovered world be named “ab Americo Inventore…quasi Americi terram sive Americam” (“from Amerigo the discovereras if it were the land of Americus or America”).

Propaganda did not start with wikipedia; Spanish, British and French practiced and employed it for centuries to claim primate to their colonies.

Interesting times in the UK. Last night the BBC did a Horizon program on our recent winter weather. They blamed it on the jet stream, suggested it might be carbon dioxide, then they said the science was far from settled and it might equally be something in the stratosphere. They ended saying we should make ready for climate change by being prepared. I liked it because they came and filmed at our local Highandover, pointing their cameras south to the meandering Cuckmere rather than the impressive barrow and ancient earthworks they were standing on.

I fear we must leave the Amerigo/Ameryck debate to more informed scholars than us.
” I wonder what the Americans were told at their schools?”
They are told that Columbus discovered America ! He never went there. Bahamas, Hispaniola and some other islands but he never set foot on the Continent until his fourth expedition led him to Central America.
The Bristol merchants were following in the footsteps of the Vikings long before Columbus and had their secret sources of cod and fur (now called Canada ?). Columbus was trying to find a route to the south of the land mass now know as Canada/USA to the East Indies and took with him an Irish navigator who had been to the land to the north.
But – The accuracy of sources (as you allude to); like adjusted temprature records, we still ask “What was the original data ?”.

Not quite right – you won’t get 3-phase out of a standard UK wall socket. Single phase 240 V at 50 Hz. But, as pointed out, most laptop power supplies, phone chargers and the like will accept either US or European voltage/frequency, so you just need some big ugly travel adaptors…

I’ve put a discussion thread up at
http://bishophill.squarespace.com/discussion/post/2382980
specifically to promote suggestions on how to get this event into the media. The presence of Anthony and Lucia should transform this from a run-of-the-mill climate alarmist propaganda event into a real “Man Bites Dog” (or “Mann bites Dust”?) story. But with the BBC’s official policy of filtering acceptable opinions on climate according to academic credentials, and almost the entire British media being opposed to scepticism, there’s every danger that the story will be ignored. Suggestions on how to ensure that the event has maximum impact welcome.
