Prominent Global Warming Skeptic Honored with Frederick Seitz Memorial Award

(PRweb) Dr. Sherwood B. Idso – the world’s leading authority on the effects of carbon dioxide on plants – will receive special recognition at an international conference on global warming taking place July 7–9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dr. Idso is the first recipient of the Frederick Seitz Memorial Award, an annual award established by former colleagues of one of the world’s best known and most highly respected scientists. Seitz was deeply skeptical of claims that “global warming” is either man-made or dangerous. The award will be presented by atmospheric scientist Dr. S. Fred Singer of the Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP).

Global Warming Debate

The debate over the causes and consequences of global warming (or “climate change”) is one of the great controversies of the modern era. While environmental activists and some politicians claim “the debate is over” and call for immediate action to reduce man-made greenhouse gas emissions, others say the science points to only a very small human impact – too small to warrant concern – and the costs of trying to prevent global warming far exceed the benefits.

Ninth International Conference on Climate Change

The Ninth International Conference on Climate Change is expected to attract nearly 1,000 speakers, scientists, and guests willing to question whether man-made global warming is a problem worth addressing. The event has 31 cosponsors and features 60 prominent scientists and economists as keynoters or panelists.

Dr. Sherwood Idso

The award recipient, Dr. Sherwood Idso, is president of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, a nonprofit research and education organization based in Tempe, Arizona. Prior to 2001 he was a research physicist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service at the U.S. Water Conservation Laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked since 1967.

Dr. Idso is the author or co-author of more than 500 scientific publications and three influential books on carbon dioxide and global change, the most recent being Climate Change Reconsidered II: Biological Impacts (2014). He served long tenures on the editorial board of the international journals Agricultural and Forest Meteorology and Environmental and Experimental Botany. Over the course of his career, he has been an invited reviewer of manuscripts for 56 scientific journals and 17 funding agencies, representing an unusually large array of disciplines.

australian miner (including coal) & recent CAW sceptic, Clive Palmer, whose senators will shortly be voting to repeal the carbon tax, with Al Gore today in the Great Hall at Parliament House. this is the most surreal CAGW moment ever:
25 June: Andrew Bolt Blog: Al Gore advises Clive Palmer. We’re in strife
A statement from Mr Palmer’s office says …: “Mr Palmer said it is apparent that climate change is a global issue and in the meeting he will discuss this with Vice President Gore”.
Yesterday, Mr Palmer told the ABC the announcement would “offer hope to mankind” and “a solution for Australia and the world”…
Reports that Palmer wants an emissions trading scheme…
So why is Palmer now demanding an emissions trading scheme when just two months ago he insisted there was no problem to fix:
Lateline presenter Tony Jones: Clive Palmer, can I ask you a very basic question? Do you believe the consensus scientific view set out in the latest IPCC report that climate change impacts due to global warming will have especially serious impacts on Australia?
Clive Palmer: No, I don’t believe that’s so. There’s been global warming for a long time. I mean, all of Ireland was covered by ice at one time. There were no human inhabitants in Ireland. That’s how the world has been going over millions and billions of years and Ross Garnaut knows that’s true, so I think that’s part of the natural cycle…
It’s not logical. If we say 97 per cent comes from nature and we don’t even bother examining how we can reduce carbon in nature, just in industry, it’s not a proper balance… I mean, if we say we want to reduce it by 1 per cent, which I think is the target globally, to do that, why can’t we take some from nature, some from industry, or maybe all from nature?… http://blogs.news.com.au/heraldsun/andrewbolt/index.php/heraldsun/comments/al_gore_advises_clive/#commentsmore

Anth0ny:
This is wonderful news!
A more deserving recipient cannot be imagined. And it is joyous that the award will be presented by so close a friend of Seitz as Fred Singer.
Is it possible that the award presentation could be recorded so those of us who cannot attend can see it and enjoy it, please?

apologies for being o/t & congratulations to Dr. Idso. but this is the reason Gore is in Australia:
Australian Conservation Foundation: The Climate Reality Project
The Climate Reality Project Australia is a program of the Australian Conservation Foundation and a branch of The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit organisation founded and chaired by Nobel Laureate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore…
Train with Al Gore and become a climate leader
At this defining moment on climate change, we need a community of inspiring and connected people to champion lasting solutions.
On 25-27 June in Melbourne, Climate Reality Chairman and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, will train a select group of leaders from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
During the training, you’ll learn from Al Gore and a group of world-class scientists, strategists, communicators, and technical specialists about the science of climate change and how to connect with people across the region at the most personal level…
And you’ll also develop skills to engage those around you and bring about lasting change using storytelling, public speaking, social media networking, and media engagement.
Over the course of the training, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and learn from trained Climate Reality Leaders from a range of professional and cultural backgrounds with years of experience in educating and engaging their networks and communities…

Clive Palmer is a joke here. A bloke who bought his way into politics and is wading through reality grasping at PR opportunities. It’s one of those very rare moments when Left, Right and Centre are
united. He’s a tosser.

Ah, yes. Dr. Seitz. The very model of a good scientist gone bad. I’m sure RJR got great value out of him.

I love the way trolls actually seem to believe that connecting something with Heartland automatically disqualifies it.
I’m surprised it didn’t try to bring in the Koch brothers as well.

Clive Palmer has an interesting past (google it). He is currently developing a 40 million tonne per annum coal mining complex in the Gallilee Basin in Queensland (as well as supposedly building a replica of the Titanic, amongst other failing business ventures). I wonder what his game is? Most recently he turned up to parliament in his own vehicles, instead of a taxpayer-funded chaffeur-driven one, claiming he was “paying his own way” and telling the government to put the money toward pensioners. A week later, he arrives in the taxpayer-funded vehicle, claiming he was keeping the chaffeur employed.

I’m hopeful that Village Idiot and Claimsguy will have similarly caustic views on the IPCC conference in Paris next year…for nothing screams bias louder than taxes collected at gunpoint in order to fund a conference whose goal is to raise more taxes. Compare and contrast that to mostly self-funded Vegas ’14 where the goal is to better understand the science. Winning.

One of his papers was Graybill & Idso 1993, which was so influential in Michael Mann’s classic MBH98 paper, in which a study of CO2 fertilization turned into a global warming study so important that it was overweighted several hundred times in the MBH98 conclusions.

To my eyes, a more serious disqualifying event would be to posthumously disparage a great scientist for free. You’re not getting paid to do this are you Claimsguy? Well into his 90’s, see how Seitz manhandled similar accusations from a likewise pube-stuck-in-throat-like attack brought on by none other than your taxpayer funded PBS.

What do your eyes have to do with Dr. Seitz? If you paid attention when he was interviewed by one abusive PBS troll who used insinuations that would tie anyone to RJR and bigga oil. A troll who was also shocked by Dr. Seitz’s support of nuclear power, apparently he wasn’t ‘prepped’ for that though.
Now about your eyes, ever use them for reading science? Not that Wikipedia popular alarmist foolishness or the sks delinquents; real science, say WUWT, Climate Audit, Lucia’s, JoNova’s, Bishop Hill, Steve Goddard’s, Dr. Spencer’s, Dr. Pielke’s, Dr. Tim Ball, (notice all the Doctorates?)? These are only the beginning, throw in the social study side at NoFrakkingConsensus and you begin to wonder just what the alarmist motives are; as it isn’t about science or true climate impact.

Wiki reference – Connolly?
Heartland and a false Reference – Gleick?
Oh the possibilities would be endless if there really was a huge number of serious scientists doing genuine warming science that actually support CO2’s evil influence (for the first time ever in 4.5 billion years). But the possibilities are not endless, are they?

Why are you smearing Dr. Seitz?
Frederick Seitz, A.B. Mathematics, Stanford University (1932), Ph.D. Physics, Princeton University (1934), Proctor Fellow, Princeton University (1934–1935), Instructor in Physics, University of Rochester (1935–1936), Assistant Professor of Physics, University of Rochester (1936–1937), Research Physicist, General Electric Company (1937–1939), Assistant Professor of Physics, University of Pennsylvania (1939–1941), Associate Professor of Physics, University of Pennsylvania (1941-1942), Professor of Physics, Carnegie Institute of Technology (1942-1949), Research Professor of Physics, University of Illinois (1949-1965), Chairman, American Institute of Physics (1954-1960), President Emeritus, American Physical Society (1961), President Emeritus, National Academy of Sciences (1962-1969), Graduate College Dean, University of Illinois (1964-1965), President Emeritus, Rockefeller University (1968-1978), Franklin Medal (1965), American Institute of Physics Compton Medal (1970), National Medal of Science (1973), (Died: March 2, 2008)

To find out if the startling claim was true — that Seitz “directed a 45M tobacco industry effort to hide health impacts of smoking” — I called him at his apartment in Manhattan. Unless there is more to the story, the accusation appears to be a willful distortion, if not an outright lie.
“That’s ridiculous, completely wrong,” Seitz told me. “The money was all spent on basic science, medical science,” he said.
According to Seitz, the CEO of RJ Reynolds — the tobacco company — was on the board of Rockefeller University while Seitz was a full-time employee there. “He was not a scientist,” Seitz said of the executive, but he believed in supporting the University’s dedication to basic research — in a little over a century, Rockefeller University has had 23 Nobel Prize winners affiliated with it, in fields of medicine and chemistry. RJ Reynolds allocated $5 million a year to Seitz to direct basic research.
To figure out how to distribute the money, Seitz says he assembled some top folks in different fields of scientific research — such as James Shannon, the director of the National Institutes of Health for 13 years, and Maclyn McCarty, the legendary geneticist — to help direct the funds.
What kind of research did they support? Seitz mentioned the work of Stanley Prusiner, who won the Nobel prize for his research into prions (Prusiner even thanks Seitz and RJ Reynolds in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech which you can read here).
When I asked Seitz if he ever spent money to try to debunk a link between smoking and ill-health, he said no. When I asked him if he himself had ever denied a link between smoking and cancer, Seitz (who, remember, is almost 100 years old) again said no and told me “my father was a 19th century man, and even he told me from when I was young that there was a connection between smoking and cancer” and that “we often talked about the hazards of smoking.” In other words, Seitz was aware of the ill-effects of smoking for a very long time, and has never tried to deny that.
