Climate Craziness of the Week – a new business model for practicing psychologists?

psychologist-lucyWhat better way to drum up business than to create a whole new class of psychological affliction?

Climate Depot reports: Weather Channel hypes report claiming ‘Climate Change Will Mean More Stress, Anxiety, PTSD in the Future’ – Growing ‘substance abuse’ due to AGW – Expect ‘broad psychological impacts’

This is based on a new report, “Beyond Storms and Droughts: The Psychological Impacts of Climate Change,” by the American Psychological Association and ecoAmerica, an environmental advocacy group devoted to climate change and sustainability issues.

That means a future with heightened levels of stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, as well as a loss of community identity – if nothing is done to stop or slow emissions of industrial-produced greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

“The striking thing is how these effects will permeate so many aspects of our daily lives,” said Dr. Norman B. Anderson, CEO of the American Psychological Association, in a press release announcing the report.

“We can also expect increases in long-term stress and anxiety from the aftermath of disasters, as well as increases in violence and crime rates as a result of higher temperatures or competition for scarce resources.”

Due to global warming, ‘expect more’: ‘Substance abuse, Mental health emergencies, People experiencing “solastalgia“: (felt when suddenly dislocated from their home), Loss of autonomy and personal identity.’

So if something IS done to combat emissions by closing down coal and other fossil-fuel plants, it will not cause any anxiety or stress when blackouts hit during peak energy demands?

Well, I, for one, am thankful that we can always count on an unbiased, agenda-free pronouncement from the medical community. I mean, why study the effects warmists are currently having on mental health of schoolchildren when we could pen delectable, Machiavellian screeds? Lysenkoism at its finest! 🙂
Also, as others have pointed out, I simply relish the irony of preserving my future autonomy by handing it over now. Yeah, I see that working out flawlessly.
Modeling is one thing; this partnering of Green with medical science is beyond unsettling. But, hey, it’s for the planet and 100% a-okay because, you know, science! 😉

That means a future with heightened levels of stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, as well as a loss of community identity –
That part is all too true!
if nothing, anything is done to stop or slow emissions of industrial-produced greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
A key one-word change that provides meaning and reality to the above psychobabble.
These Am-Psy-Ass knot-heads are mixing up cause and effect.
The stress and anxiety come not from any climate change too subtle to measure. Rather the stress, anxiety, depressing, and loss of community identity come directly from a totalitarian federal government on a regulation frenzy, taxation bludgeoning, power trip.
Our only hope is that we will have a POST-traumatic stress disorder when the idiots currently running the world are costumed in the very ball and chains they designed for the rest of us. The traumatic stress we feel is indeed “man-made” but it is entirely governmental rather than environmental.

June 10, 2014 2:46 pm

I suspect this is correct. But, it is not AGW that will cause the problem. The problem is happening now and is media/government induced psychosis involving a belief in AGW. Stress can cause it. Stress like the lost of the planet, climate, nature, etc. Delusions are common such as the sea is rising and becoming acidic, the temperature is rising, storms are more powerful. And the grandiose delusion that humans have the power to alter the climate.
“Psychosis occurs in a variety of mental and physical disorders; therefore, it likely has multiple causes. Biology, stress and drug use are three of the most common theories.”
“Psychosis may involve delusional beliefs, some of which are paranoid in nature. Put simply, delusions are false beliefs that a person holds on to, without adequate evidence. It may be difficult to change the belief even with evidence to the contrary. Common themes of delusions are persecutory (person believes that others are out to harm him/her), grandiose (person believing that he or she has special powers or skills)”

new report, “Beyond Storms and Droughts: The Psychological Impacts of Climate Change,”
This may not be totally without reason. It’s just that they’ve skipped one word:
“Beyond Storms and Droughts: The Psychological Impacts of Climate Change Alarmism,”
So far there is not even any scientific evidence of the existence of “climate change” beyond the undeniable fact that climate has and always will change.
It is quite possible that the continual barrage of alarmist “end of the world” propaganda may lead to the kind of nihilistic fatalism that characterised the 70’s and 80’s with the imminent threat of all-out nuclear war.
Already the state of all the garbage that gets published as climate “science” could seriously be regarded as indications of a pathology.
It is long over due that this affliction be officially recognised and those publishing this kind of alarmist garbage, probably in all sincerity, be given adequate care as well as all those less well versed in science they they have managed to scare the shit out of.

Shouldn’t “The Weather Channel” be renamed “The Storm Chaser Channel”? Seems that’s all they ever do anymore, even when the storms they chase are long past.
As far as “more stress” goes, Ma’ Nature has been showing for, what, a few years short of 20 years?, that she is not a Climate Model. Stress for CAGWer’s.
For more grounded people, “more stress” because law makers and presidents seem to be listening to what is groundless.

June 10, 2014 4:36 pm

What’s actually causing anxiety and depression are the lies told by “scientists” and politicians, who wish to scare naive and low-information people into believing there is a human induced climate crisis that actually doesn’t exist.
Furthermore, the expensive and wasteful spending conducted by politicians to address a “climate crisis” that doesn’t exist, leads to: increased taxes, increased prices, lowers living standards, higher unemployment, increased national debt and other economic hardship.
It IS a proven fact that money problems cause a tremendous amount of anxiety and stress in peoples’ lives, so in that respect, the economic hardship being caused by the CAGW scam is creating increased stress and anxiety, but not for the reasons purported in this paper.

And what kind of trauma will be caused for the prognosticators of doom and catastrophic scenarios ( all of which require more taxes and less freedoms ) ? It is as though we are getting to watch in real time the machinations of an acephalic organism determined to drive humanity back to the stone age (saving the planet) and or death camps for “processing” (saving the planet) whilst maintaining wealth, privilege and power ….. (saving the planet for themselves), gosh I hope I am wrong.

Probably a direct correlation with low information voting to to expand the topic too.
Just sayin, I see it everyday.

June 10, 2014 5:57 pm

as well as a loss of community identity
Yeah, ‘Cuz that’s what happens when communities are threatened. They don’t rally around one another, or become closer knit or anything like that. I mean that’s exactly what communities have done in the face of disasters of all sorts for thousands of years, without exception. But obviously climate change will be totally different. SARC
If the effects of CAGW were REAL, they couldn’t make that case. Every psychologist who has any pride, and I do mean ANY pride, in their profession should be speaking out against this. This doesn’t even amount to propaganda. It amounts to mental abuse that this very profession is sworn to protect against, not participate in.

As a clinical psychologist, this nonsense sickens me and only reaffirms my decision to stop being a member of the APA. Not met a patient yet who is concerned with “global warming”, but rather their stress arises from job loss and inadequate income (aside from their own poor choices and relationship issues), all of which will only increase with this administration’s economic and energy policies. Personally, I suspect this is the start of a move by the APA to get their hands on some NIMH grant $$ to study the “psychological effects” of climate change… smh.

I am a mental health provider of almost 14 years and specialize in PTSD, etc. This is complete bullshit and I agree with all the posts that indicate an intelligent answer, i.e. that the warmist bullshit is what is causing the problem, i.e. a self-fulfilling prophecy, i.e. I cannot wait until I have a warmist needing therapy due to his PTSD caused by no one believing him or her!!! L O L, in fact I think my ass will laugh out loud on that one! We live in a diseased world where mankind thinks they are god and will do anything to get there. Pathologising dissent? Now that’s Orwellian
Ahead of a conference on the psychology of climate change denial, Brendan O’Neill says green authoritarians are treating debate as a disorder

Climate change denial is a mental disorder
Ethan Greenhart, author of Can I Recycle My Granny?, scraps with spiked over the recession, breastfeeding and ‘anti-science speech crimes
Brendan O’Neill: Ethan, there’s a recession looming. People are worried about their jobs and homes. They’re fretting over the money in their bank accounts. Yet in your new book, you have a chapter on ‘mosquito rights’ and whether it is ethical to send bed nets to Africa! Doesn’t this show how petty environmentalism is, even how anti-human it is? You’re having a laugh, right?
Ethan Greenhart: I never have a laugh. And if you got as far as the chapter titled ‘Is it ethical to laugh?’ you would know that. Look, nothing better sums up the need for my brand of environmentalism – what I refer to in the book as my zero-carbon, no-driving, faeces-recycling lifestyle – than the current credit crunch. Who do you think brought about this recession? It wasn’t mosquitoes. They live admirably sustainable lives on the rumps of hippos and hyenas. It was human beings – overweight, overdressed, overrated human beings and their insatiable lust for new-fangled mod cons, like smoothie makers or life-support machines.
BON: You’re not seriously saying mosquitoes are ‘better’ than mankind. Any notion of ‘mosquito rights’ seems deeply misanthropic to me.
EG: Is this a set-up? Are you deliberately trying to embarrass me? I do not talk about ‘mosquito rights’ in my book. I talk about the rights of disease.

Mental Illness To Increase Due To Climate Change
http://wmbriggs.com/blog/?p=4295

NothingToSeeHere
June 11, 2014 5:49 am

My wife is a Psychologist in private practice and has observed (anecdotally) an increasing trend amongst her patients’ self-reported anxiety over a number of common recurring themes in the news media. (Take your pick…climate change, honey bees disappearing, gun violence, etc). Greg Goodman’s comments above hit the nail on the head. The root of the problem is the anxiety that the media creates through its breathless, the apocalypse is imminent, “except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish,” style of reporting. A Psychologist’s term for this is called catastrophizing – which is considered a cognitive distortion, i.e., something that is treatable.
What truly makes me sad about this is that I held out hope that Psychology might be the field that would eventually shed some light on why humans, by default, have an unquenchable thirst for thinking about all things that will certainly kill ALL of us soon. Why that in all likelihood is not the case and why we are on a societal level catastrophizing. Clearly, I am delusional.
Instead we get examples like the article above and this article – also from the APA:
http://www.apa.org/research/action/speaking-of-psychology/climate-change.aspx
There are some mind-numbing quotes in here. See if you can find the bang-your-forehead onto your desk statements within these:
• “The first is that there aren’t that many people who really deny climate change. It’s about five percent of our country doesn’t think it’s possible…. I mean, eight percent of America thinks Elvis is still alive.”
• “The Wildlife Conservation Society in New York City, and we found that in our meetings there was a very elevated sense of concern, almost what looked like panic in some conversations.
• “…People see the world around them changing and leaving them”
• “When you know the facts. When you can see the evidence, it is distressing.”
• “And when you think people around you don’t believe you, you self-edit because the emotional labor that goes into doing that work is difficult.”
Lastly, be on the lookout for more language like Environmental Justice to pop into the news media more over the coming months. Psychologists that are still in academia love, love, love talking about inequity and justice. I suspect that this will be next tool to silence anyone skeptical of the claims regarding AGW. “What? You don’t care about environmental justice? “

June 11, 2014 6:00 am

Reblogged this on CraigM350 and commented:
Somehow I think the trauma/distress of choosing between heating or eating will be a more pressing concern. Not to mention the increased anxiety and stress levels caused by various climate morons in the media freaking out over the weather and telling us anything outside of their narrow Goldilocks fantasy of climate is ‘unprecedented’. FUD.
