Gavin Schmidt is the new James Hansen

NASA Names Schmidt Director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, gets honorary lunch ticket to Tom’s Restaurant.

NASA has named Gavin A. Schmidt to head the agency’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, a leading Earth climate research laboratory. Currently deputy director of the institute, Schmidt steps into the position left vacant after the retirement of long-time director James E. Hansen and becomes only the third person to hold the post.

“Gavin is a highly respected climate scientist who already also has proven himself as a terrific leader of the GISS team,” said NASA’s Chief Scientist Ellen Stofan. “He is the perfect candidate to continue leading this vital research institute at a critical time for the U.S. and the world.”

Schmidt, an expert in climate modeling, began his career at GISS in 1996. His primary area of research is the simulation of past, present and future climates. He has worked on developing and improving computer models that integrate ocean, atmosphere, and land processes to simulate Earth’s climate, and is particularly interested in how their results can be compared to paleoclimatic data.

“It’s an honor to lead the team of talented scientists at GISS,” he said. “The work being done here has implications for societies across the planet, and I will strive to make that research as valuable as possible.”

Schmidt received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Oxford University in 1988 and a doctorate in applied mathematics from University College London in 1994. He came to New York as a 1996 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Postdoctoral Fellow in Climate and Global Change Research.

In addition to more than 100 published, peer-reviewed articles, he is the co-author of “Climate Change: Picturing the Science” (W.W. Norton, 2009), a collaboration between climate scientists and photographers. In 2011, he was awarded the American Geophysical Union Climate Communications Prize.

GISS was founded in 1961 as NASA’s theoretical division for work on planetary atmospheres, under the direction of Robert Jastrow, and is today a leading Earth climate research laboratory. Major areas of GISS research include measurements, remote sensing and simulation of Earth’s climate, the forces driving climate change and its impacts on human society, agriculture and ecosystems and continuing work on planetary climates in the solar system and beyond. GISS works closely with partners at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and with the Earth Institute and School of Engineering at Columbia University.

NASA’s Earth science program monitors the planet’s vital signs from land, air and space with a fleet of satellites and ambitious airborne and ground-based observation campaigns. NASA develops new ways to observe and study Earth’s interconnected natural systems with long-term data records and computer analysis tools to better see how our planet is changing. The agency shares this unique knowledge with the global community and works with institutions in the United States and around the world that contribute to understanding and protecting our home planet.

June 9, 2014 10:51 am

Gavin Schmidt’s history predicates against any change after Hansen.
A group of scientists established themselves as the defence squad for the bosses at the CRU led by Gavin Schmidt. In a leaked email from December 10 2004 Schmidt gave the CRU gang a Christmas present;
“Colleagues, No doubt some of you share our frustration with the current state of media reporting on the climate change issue. Far too often we see agenda-driven “commentary” on the Internet and in the opinion columns of newspapers crowding out careful analysis. Many of us work hard on educating the public and journalists through lectures, interviews and letters to the editor, but this is often a thankless task. In order to be a little bit more pro-active, a group of us (see below) have recently got together to build a new ‘climate blog’ website: RealClimate.org which will be launched over the next few days:”
The list was as follows:
– Mike Mann – Eric Steig – William Connolley – Stefan Rahmstorf – Ray Bradley – Amy Clement – Rasmus Benestad – William Connolley – Caspar Ammann.
The names are very familiar to people who have followed climate and engaged in questioning the anthropogenic warming theory (AGW) in any way. The evasiveness pervading the behavior recorded in the CRU emails was present at RealClimate and beyond. Note that William Connolley is listed twice – a Freudian slip because he was the most aggressive and did more than double duty through his own web page under an assumed name.
Schmidt notes,
“The idea is that we working climate scientists should have a place where we can mount a rapid response to supposedly ‘bombshell’ papers that are doing the rounds and give more context to climate related stories or events.”
and
“This is a strictly volunteer/spare time/personal capacity project and obviously nothing we say there reflects any kind of ‘official’ position.”
A detailed exposure of Schmidt’s is encapsulated in Steve McIntyre’s October 29 2005 column titled “Is Gavin Schmidt Honest?”
http://climateaudit.org/2005/10/29/is-gavin-schmidt-honest/
It appears Schmidt is a “natural” replacement for Hansen and indicates NASA GISS will continue the same policies and practices. I wonder what those ex NASA scientists who spoke out about that position think about this move?

That told me all I needed to know about the man’s character.

mwhite says: “Gavin A. Schmidt – The man in charge as the negative PDO starts to make its presence felt.”
Curious statement for a number of reasons: (1) the PDO is actually positive and has been since the first of the year…and will likely go higher this month:
http://jisao.washington.edu/pdo/PDO.latest
(2) The PDO is not an indicator of ocean temperatures (warming or cooling) of the Pacific. The PDO simply represents the spatial pattern of the sea surface temperature anomalies of the extratropical North Pacific. See the post:
http://bobtisdale.wordpress.com/2014/04/20/the-201415-el-nino-part-5-the-relationship-between-the-pdo-and-enso/
(3) There’s nothing cool about the sea surface temperatures of the Pacific…comment image
…especially the North Pacific over the past year:comment image
The PDO has no value in a discussion of global surface temperatures since it represents the spatial pattern of the sea surface temperatures, not the sea surface temperatures.
To paraphrase Richard Lindzen from a recent presentation: The Pacific Decadal Oscillation is not an oscillation. And it’s not decadal. But there is one thing correct about it. It takes place in the Pacific.

What ever happened to the allegations that Hansen had accepted more than $1M in undeclared cash (in the form of science “prizes”) from environmental advocacy groups — presumably for reaching conclusions that the advocacy group liked? Last I remember someone (ATI or someone) had FOIAed NASA to get the disclosure statements and NASA said they did not hold them — leading to the allegation that Hansen never disclosed the cash as required by law. Did this go anywhere?
I imagine that Gavin will now start to receive a similar flood of cash from advocacy groups to encourage him to reach only the “correct” conclusions. And if NASA has chosen to selectively enforce the disclosure laws — well, its good to be king isn’t it.

Such a terrible choice. Most bosses want a manager who will lead their departments, breathe new life into existing programs, initiate new programs to build upon the latest technology, inspire their employees through their personal example and build employee pride throughout their organization.
Condoned if not participated in adjusting historical temperatures to match confirmation bias. Certainly not new life in old programs.
Gavin is an expert in climate modeling… Leader and developer of archaic code monsters that fail to legitimately model temperatures. So much for initiating new programs to build upon latest technology.
Gavin is highly respected… Gavin is mastermind of a climate misrepresentation web site. He refuses to respectfully acknowledge peers and instead spurns their handshakes and face to face discussions. Gavin is also on record in the climategate emails. So much for inspire employees by example; employee ideas about possible flattery by imitation makes me nervous.
I wonder how many employees will now mumble their employer organization hoping that people will not associate them with Gavin and his predecessor.
I really do regret that Judith Curry didn’t get the job offer.

This new appointment should be viewed as an ideal opportunity, to make timely inquiries and statements, both privately and publicly.
While the appointment is new and fresh (even if obscure to most of the public) there is more of a chance (perhaps) to obtain statements and comments from various people, i.e., will they defend what has gone on to date with Hansen, Schmidt, various NASA offices, RealClimate blog, Gavin’s partners-in-malice such as Michael Mann, CRU-Jones et al.
For those well enough versed in all of the details and history (as I am not), it is a great moment to try to stimulate curious journalism, critical public challenges and institutional responses, etc.
Who knows what interesting or useful comments may emerge if enough probes are attempted with media, NASA, Congress, other scientists, etc.??

“Technical Note: Sorry for any recent performance issues. We are working on it.”
Has this got something to do with Schmidt’s new role ?
He is still listed as #1 “contributor” though with Michael Mann at #2

Robert Austin says,
“I felt no ill will towards the Gavinator until his truly boorish behavior towards Dr.Spenser at this Schmidt / Spenser interview. It demonstrated that Roy Spenser is a gentleman and that Gavin Schmidt is most certainly not.”
I think it is more telling than that, Robert. If you are confident in your ideas and your facts, a normal, mature adult is willing and even anxious to defend and promote their ideas. This little, silly, coward of a man couldn’t do it. I don’t want to be extreme in my thoughts, but I have nothing but disdain and mistrust for this weasel. Even if I completely disagreed with Dr. Spencer I ‘d rather spend a year arguing with him than a moment with Schmidt. I have a difficult time expressing my incredulity of a man like that.
At least Hansen was ready and willing to debate his opponents. This is in my view, a complete disaster. I just hope and pray that he’s fired by the next president.

‘Currently deputy director of the institute, Schmidt steps into the position left vacant after the retirement of long-time director James E. Hansen and becomes only the third person to hold the post.’
The post continues to lean to the left. Schmidt is hanging on for dear life; but it is difficult to determine if he is trying to stand it upright or to a more left-leaning posture.

I lived here twenty years now too, and that fat ass never goes out. The neighborhood is full of bright eyed college babes (and a few guys). No Gavin has been seen ’round here. No, he is *not* hanging out locally, like that. And his “penthouse” office above Tom’s ALWAYS has it’s lights off after 9PM. That disconnects him completely from Columbia University labs proper, open all night, including holidays. I used to walk home every night for five year between 2AM and 4AM. No, that’s not Columbia University. These are gnats of science, not men.
Gilbert Stork is a real god. He put art into organic synthesis, and after helping invent The Pill, he put Columbia back on the map where actual new methods were forged in creating things out of carbon that really matter:

Hmmm …. So Gavin Schmidt is designated as the new Hansen, eh?!
This is the same Gavin Schmidt about whom one might reasonably say: ‘Consistency is not exactly his forté.’
There are a few things that have always puzzled me about Good Ol’ Gav. Back in November 2009, he claimed that the Climategate 1.0 files had been uploaded to RealClimate. This alleged upload was three days before they became public knowledge.
If, in fact, events transpired in at least one of the various ways in which Schmidt subsequently described them, would he not have had the perfect “hockey-stick” from his server log data to present to Andy Revkin, as evidence, when he discussed it with him on Nov. 20, 2009 (even if he did not report this alleged crime to the appropriate authorities)?!
For the record, although about a year later, Schmidt did claim that he had sent such logs to Norfolk’s (slowest and) finest in December 2009, Revkin confirmed to me a few years ago that no logs were ever presented to him:

[HRO:] Could you share with us the evidence presented to you circa Nov. 20/09 – and duly analyzed by those with appropriate expertise – which led you to conclude that the alleged “hack” for the purpose of an “upload” (an action which has never made any sense to me!) can reasonably be described as: “Real Climate … was clearly subjected to a computer hack …”
[Revkin:] Indeed, my statements about the “hack” of Real Climate rely entirely on the statements of Gavin Schmidt, and not any independent line of evidence. So you’re correct that there’s no independent evidence-based foundation for that level of definitiveness.

One other thing that struck me about Good Ol’ Gav is his rather remarkable facility in jumping on his high horse to claim that he did not say what he did when … well … he did! (For details, pls. see: The ineffable meaning of “conflicts” in climate science)

NASA may have given up on leading the “Space Race” but it still leads in “Carbocentrisme”.

I commented on how these warmist folks are basically bat s**t crazy some time ago.
They are doubling down on all fronts, our wallets will be gone. Australia is looking pretty good these days.

Those climate models are paper mills. Even though each new generation and a wealth of model diagnostic literature prove the prior models wrong, the model based papers never have to be retracted. Nice gig while it lasts.

Schmidt happens… 🙁

So Gavin’s journey to the dark side is now complete. What with increased budget concerns and responsibility for the welfare of his minions, he’ll have little time for scepticism. Its a pity really because despite his seemingly unshakable faith in models, I thought he showed occasional glimmers of hope.
Oh and Tamino has a new master.

Warm Winters Result From Greenhouse Effect, Columbia Scientists Find, Using NASA Model
Date: June 4, 1999
Source: Columbia University
Summary:
A team of scientists from Columbia University has shown that warm winters in the northern hemisphere likely can be explained by the action of upper-atmosphere winds that are closely linked to global warming.

Gavin Schmidt was one of the authors.
Now what did Dr. Hodren say? Colder winters in the USA as a result of man’s greenhouse gases. What is a sane mane to do?

I’m open minded about Gavin Schmidt, for some reason he strikes me as an exception, don’t ask me why, there’s something about his character I like, so I won’t be judging him just yet. We’ll see… 🙂
