Quotes of the Week: 'Light bulb moment' for CNN chief – Pat Sajak goes nuclear

qotw_croppedI think the light bulb may have gone on with this guy. From TalkingPointsMemo:

In addition to being mocked for its breathless coverage of Flight 370, CNN has also been under fire for the way it has covered climate change. Zucker on Monday defended the network’s approach to the issue.

“Climate change is one of those stories that deserves more attention, that we all talk about,” he said, “but we haven’t figured out how to engage the audience in that story in a meaningful way. When we do do those stories, there does tend to be a tremendous amount of lack of interest on the audience’s part.”

Translation: Nobody cares. ZZZZzzzz.

In other news…

Game show host Pat Sajak caused a major uproar in social media circles on Tuesday, writing on Twitter Monday night that “global warming alarmists are unpatriotic racists knowingly misleading for their own ends.”

http://twitter.com/patsajak/statuses/468581395237842945

That’s unfortunate. A number of global warming alarmists I know are in fact patriotic and not racists, but they are severely misguided in their belief system.

But, I laughed at this one from Sajak:

While dropping the race card here is rather foolish (and has nothing to do with alarmism, really), his comment of the lefties being un-patriotic is not unreasonable. If patriotism is measured by a love of one for their nation, then I would agree. How many times have we heard the filth in the green camp rave about how great it would be if we were run by a dictator to fix everything? How superior socialist countries are? How America is run by greed, its people needing to be punished for their sins to Gaia? The blind, unsubstantiated patriotism at the other end of the spectrum isn’t any better, but that doesn’t invalidate Mr. Sajak’s point.

In the International Express an English paper for Australian ex pats. There was an article written about the effect on the climate using those low watt globes. At the time they didn’t work on dimmer light systems. But bio fuels were more heavily taxed than normal petrol and were dearer to buy. But the comment I liked most and made me laugh, was ‘Low watt bulbs will do nothing to change the climate, it is like tossing a sugar cube into Loch Ness, hoping to make the water sweeter.’ About sums it up and that was 10 years ago.

Avid leftism is a near universal trait of the alarmist majority of supercomputer climate model enthusiasts and these self same people also call for anti-Asian racist quotas for the central defining career advancement event of our era, college admissions, and that’s not just verbal “racism” but actual discrimination. They *are* racists, quite objectively. They can’t shut up about it, or at least they quite firmly support those who turn nearly every issue into a anti-white and anti-Asian racial one, preposterously and hypocritically.

oh for one Sajak at “our” ABC in Australia, which has been studiously playing down or not even reporting this continuing saga:
21 May: Australian: Leo Shanahan: Faulty solar part ‘caused office blaze’
A FAULTY circuit breaker of a type installed in more than 25,000 rooftop solar panels in NSW and Queensland was responsible for a fire at an office block in Sydney that forced the evacuation of 20 people.
Fire and Rescue NSW has confirmed that a fire at a Parramatta office block late last year, during which a solar PV system caught alight, was caused by the same Avanco-branded DC isolator that is the subject of recall orders by NSW and Queensland.
Originating in the switch room for the solar PV system, the Parramatta fire triggered an automatic fire alarm about noon on December 13, and led to the evacuation of at least 20 people. There were no injuries…
Commissioner Robert Vellar said up to 3740 isolators were sold to 19 distributors in NSW.
“Testing has revealed the switch’s enclosure is not adequate as it allows in moisture that may cause sparks and in some cases fire,” he said.
“Although NSW Fire and Rescue has responded to only one incident linked to the faulty switches, 57 similar incidents have been reported in Queensland.”…
Mr Vellar said that while Fair Trading issued a warning that the isolator should be turned off following the Queensland recall of 27,000 of the isolators on May 12, an official recall could allow customers to pursue legal rights.
He said consumers should not attempt to replace the switches themselves.
“If you think you have a faulty isolator switch on your solar panel system, contact your installer and arrange for an inspection,” he said…
Mr Hungerford (Advancetech/TRO Pacific Holdings) has not returned requests for comment.

20 May: SMH: Beau Donelly: Rise in consumer complaints over solar power
Complaints about rooftop solar panels have jumped markedly as more Victorians have taken up cheap offers in the ***booming green energy market.
The number of people contacting the state’s consumer watchdog about solar electricity systems increased from five a month in 2007 to 183 a month this year.
Largely about faulty units, poor installation, service delays and difficulty in cancelling contacts, the complaints have pushed solar power systems into the top five products reported to Consumer Affairs Victoria, alongside furniture, white goods and clothing.
The more serious complaints have been made over sales of defective equipment and failure to honour contracts – allegations that led the watchdog last week to issue a warning about Melbourne supplier Sunburst Solar…
It follows prosecutions of two solar companies earlier this year, one of which was fined $60,000 for consumer law breaches.
The increase in complaints has come as the popularity of solar systems has surged. Driven by government incentives, the falling costs of solar panels and rising electricity prices, more than 126,000 systems were sold in two boom years.
(SO BUSINESS IS NOT BOOMING) Sales fell in 2013 as government incentives were wound back. But calls to the watchdog remain as high as they did during the peak, with more than 2000 a year.,,
Ms Noone said consumers reported difficulties connecting their system to the grid and alleged the company provided faulty panels and inverters, failed to reimburse shortfalls in feed-in tariff incentive payments and could not be reached for warranty claims…
Sunburst issued a statement through its lawyers saying it was committed to addressing any complaints. ”Sunburst Solar is not aware of any client with an outstanding complaint or issue relating to any installation or agreement … and would encourage any client with such a grievance to contact the company, at which point a solution and rectification will be forthcoming,” it said.
ASIC records show that Sunburst chief executive Robin Grainger is a director or shareholder in a series of other solar or energy companies. There is no suggestion any of the other businesses have acted inappropriately.
The Consumer Affairs warning follows legal action against two solar companies earlier this year.
Solareco Pty Ltd was fined $60,000 last month for making false representations and Ballarat-based Bailey Designed Engineering was forced to close after losing a series of legal battles over faulty equipment.
Ms Noone said solar suppliers flooding the market in recent years led to some aggressive marketing tactics, misleading practices and substandard products, but was not a reflection of the whole industry. ”We’re not saying it isn’t a reputable industry, but certainly it’s relatively new,” she said.

but is ever so concerned about this, which gets the full treatment, with AUDIO! LOL.
20 May: ABC Rural: Matt Brann: Carbon credits from culling feral animals hits the dust
Plans to cull feral animals in exchange for carbon credits has been gunned down by the latest policy change to Australia’s struggling carbon market.
Dr Tim Moore from NetPositive has spent years working on a methodology for culling feral camels in exchange for credits under the Federal Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI).
He says when in Opposition, Environment Minister Greg Hunt was supportive of the proposal, but that support appears to have been lost.
“The Federal Government has released amendments to the Carbon Credits Act, which in small print at the back, says the Federal Government no longer believes that removing feral animals for an emissions reduction purpose is viable or important to Australia’s international commitments,” he said.
“So those opportunities have been removed from the legislation and I think that’s a bad decision to be completely honest
Audio: Troubles in the carbon market(ABC Rural)
“The Federal Government knows feral animals create methane and emit methane, but they don’t think the emissions reduction fund, is a way to use markets to solve the problem of feral animal management in Australia.”
Without a financial incentive to cull, Dr Moore believes feral camel populations will explode***…
“One of the problems the carbon market is facing is the uncertainty created by constant changing of government policy positions.
“It’s making it very difficult to make long term investment decisions,” he said…

“That’s unfortunate. A number of global warming alarmists I know are in fact patriotic and not racists, but they are severely misguided in their belief system.”
Define patriotism? Is being patriotic loving your land area, people, government or culture? Governments will call you unpatriotic if you hate them but is the government the country. People with different political or different socioeconomic backgrounds will have different definitions of patriotism. Marxists define patriotism differently from conservatives. In other words you can be using the same words but mean totally different things and therefore talking about different values without realizing it. For me as an Australian, the USA is defined by the constitution. Freedom of speech and property and the right to bear arms to defend those rights. Yet you Americans let the constitution get trashed by judges who toe the government party line.
States are constitutionally allowed to split from the union. How will patriotism be defined when that happens?

***UBS’s “tea-party” quote is surely a contender for quote of the week!
21 May: Business Spectator: Reuters: UBS slashes EU carbon price forecast
Swiss investment bank UBS slashed its year-end EU carbon price forecast by 23 per cent due to the weaker-than-expected market impact of the bloc’s plan to cut the supply of carbon permits…
Analysts at the bank now predict front-year EU Allowance (EUA) prices will end the year at around 10 euros per tonne, down from a previous forecast of 13 euros.
With prices at around 4.70 euros on Tuesday, the updated view still represents a more-than 100 per cent premium on current levels…
Under the EU plan, dubbed ‘backloading’, the bloc will this year withdraw 400 million carbon permits from its market in a bid to lift prices back towards double digits.
A total 900 million units are scheduled to be withheld from government sales in 2014-2016 and released at the end of the decade.
UBS said EUA prices remain subdued due to several factors including a mild European winter, lower-than-expected emissions under the scheme in 2013, and reduced hedging of forward power sales by utilities…
UBS said that the crisis in Ukraine has also shifted EU politicians’ focus away from reforming the European carbon market…
He added that success by Eurosceptic parties at this week’s European Parliament elections was unlikely to cause delays to proposed reforms.
***”The likely rise of the ‘tea parties’ is not a significant threat to EU carbon policy in our view, thanks to a solid majority of established parties close to the political centre,” he said, referring to the politically conservative Tea Party movement in the United States

21 May: South China Morning Post: Cheung Chi-fai: Sun sets on joint Hong Kong-Shenzhen solar project
The first-ever collaborative project between Hong Kong and Shenzhen to create solar cells for power generation will come to an end this year after a subsidiary of American chemical giant DuPont pulled out.
The project’s end came with the announcement from DuPont’s local subsidiary, DuPont Apollo, that it was stopping production in the region of silicon thin-film modules, which are used in solar cells.
That dealt a blow to cross-border efforts to establish the region as a hub for the research, development and production of solar power technology…
DuPont Apollo had aspired to become one of the world’s top three providers of thin-film photovoltaic modules by next year…
DuPont Apollo chairman Chuck Xu Chengzeng cited a flagging market for the decision to pull the plug on the project.
“The state of the silicon thin-film solar module market segment has changed dramatically in recent years and market conditions for this segment continue to deteriorate,” he said…
About 100 scientists and engineers would be transferred within the group or paid to leave, a person with knowledge of the operation said.
The production facility in Shenzhen, which came into full operation in 2010, will be suspended but the person believed the factory might be modified for new uses.

I presume that the “racist” jab was about the way the green movement, and the warmistas in particular, are keeping Africa in energy poverty. The “unpatriotic” part I suspect is a reference to the overwhelming anti-capitalist ideology on the green left, and this DOES include the alarmist climatologists. These people are definitely anti-liberty and in the land of liberty that is unpatriotic.
Still, not wise and not helpful to put out those kinds of comments without an explanation.

“Racist” is like “denialist” in that they have become meaningless. People who are concerned about AGW are not “racist” whatever that means. If we are ever to resolve this issue, we must recognize that it is not a zero sum game. People who hold views contrary to others are not thereby immoral or evil. They just have a different opinion.
The words “denier” and “denialist” have been extremely damaging to any attempt to come to terms with this issue. The best way to counter the sue of such damaging epithets is to rise above them and to meet hostility with good will. I can remember the scene when Nelson Mandela entered the stadium at the rugby championship wearing a Springbok’s uniform. We can’t compare the situation that he faced with that of AGW but perhaps we can emulate him in his greatness in dealing with anger and mistrust.

Policies adopted to address global warming absolutely disproportionately affect brown and black folks around the world. Just as the drug war is racist, so too is the carbon war. These policies will, and in some places have, increase the cost of energy. We’ve seen the amazing things access to cheap energy can do and it is madness to suggest others shouldn’t have that same access.

I suppose that we’ll find out in due time what Sajak meant. I suspect that’s it’s just a dose of the same nonsense that the left in American politics is doing on a daily basis…where the race card has seemingly replaced all others in the deck it’s played so frequently. My guess is Sajak is throwing a little irony into the discussion.

I think Pat was trying to make the point that any number of alarmists are, in fact, lying to us. That this is not a scholarly disagreement, but one in which many alarmists are actively trying to deceive the public on with assertions they know to be untrue. Having followed this debate for many years now, I have to agree. One cannot assume good will on the part of the AGW community.
As for being patriotic, I believe Pat means that the AGW crowd would happily see the country reduced to penury to meet their agenda. He thinks that’s unpatriotic. It depends on the importance one places on prosperity. Some people–people who consider themselves patriots–believe that global warming is impending doom and that penury is worth it. I think people can disagree about what constitutes “patriotic” in the debate.

I think Mr. Sajak was simply dishing out what we on the political right have to take every day
If you disagree with President Obama it is because you are racist. If you want secure borders, you are racist. If you want to control spending, you hate the poor, etc. etc. as nauseam, ad infinitum, with variations.
How people are responding to him demonstrates how silly the political left sounds to the political right, only the right does not have the backing of the government, “educational” institutions and mainstream media.

Too blanket a statement (“racists”) by Sajak. The people at the very top – in the UN, top policy makers at institutions like the IPCC, some people at top levels of some western governments, etc – are indeed racists. The majority – the low-level grunts/foot soldiers – typically are not racists. Once again, the term “useful idiots” comes to mind., especially when it comes to the media and entertainment worlds.

Calling climate obsessed fanatics ‘racist’ is in some ways kinder than calling skeptics den^alists.
We now have a former Governor claiming that Republicans are unAmerican for supporting reasonable voting ID laws and ballot security. I think there is no reason to hold back on pointing out the self-serving climate hypesters and con-artists for what they are: Racists who want the poor to die in the dark and fleece the tax payers of the world to support their failed energy scams.

An individual alarmist may not be racist – but as mentioned in a previous comment, when implemented, “carbon control policies” have a far more devastating effect in undeveloped countries like Africa than they do in the US. Sure, the poor here are a little worse off here from these policies, but its nothing compared to what happens in other countries.

I think Sajak has a point. I’ve immersed myself (but I don’t think I’ve drowned yet) in the AGW thingy for going on 30 years. And, for the life of me, I can’t think of one single Black climatologist.
Think about it: Overpeck, Wigley, Jones, Mann, Trenberth, Thompson, Hansen, Schneider, Schmitt, Bradley, Hughes, Turney, Santer, Holdren, Ehrlich, et al, et al, et al – all privileged white males (unless you include, in a couple cases, their shrinking violet wives).
(P.S. I’m aware quite a few of those un affirmative, gender biased folks are climatologists in name only.)
And their financial overlords: Gore, Redford, Maurice Strong, Steyer – all privileged white males in the upper, upper 0.1%.
Just how many Black climatologists does anybody out there know? And, who’s going to get hurt by carbon policies? And, who’s going to profit?
Sajak’s a genius! I salute him!

To understand why all the media hype is being generated by the Liberals to increase public support for CAGM, aka now Climate Change, and the wealth redistribution schemes they salivate for, one only needs to understand the basic human psychology as explained by Nobel-winning economist Daniel Kahneman in his best seller book, “Thinking, Fast and Slow.”
On page 8 (of 499 in the Amazon Kindle version) of his book, he writes, “People tend to assess the relative importance of issues by the ease with which they are retrieved from memory – and this is largely determined by the extent of coverage in the media.”
Kahneman goes on to explain how authoritative regimes using control of the media to keep public interest focused on some areas and not others to the benefit of further control of the politcal institutions.
That quote explains why the Democrats and Liberals need to keep Climate Change as an on-going media topic to raise its importance to gain support for their wealth re-distribution efforts (ie. more taxes).

“Climate change is one of those stories that deserves more attention, that we all talk about,” he said, “but we haven’t figured out how to engage the audience in that story in a meaningful way. When we do do those stories, there does tend to be a tremendous amount of lack of interest on the audience’s part.”

He means HE talks about. After almost 2 decades of “blitzkrieg” bombardment they wonder why they are failing. HELLO! It’s BECAUSE of the nearly 2 decades of “blitzkrieg” bombardment. When will these people understand this very simple fact?
There was a bit of research a few years back which showed how people switched TV channels in droves the moment global warming was mentioned on the news. I can’t find it now (lacking keywords).

Readers who are not familiar with “Wheel of Fortune” should try to watch an episode. Once you do that, notice that contestants (and hoards of viewers at home) actually know how to spell English words correctly. They are folks who are paying close attention to the spotty information provided in the clues. They can discern what letters are missing, often blazingly quickly, and guess the complete phrase.
I’m thinking that the slackers among our population who fracture the English language in their attempts to communicate electronically, or make up goofy-sounding nonsensical phrases to recite rhythmically because they think it makes them sound cool, are those whom we often call “low-information voters”.

Pamela, do not judge a book by it’s cover:
Excerpt from a commencement address given by Pat Sajak in 2002
…”I could go on with a laundry list of silly and hypocritical things said and done by some of my fellow Show Business luminaries, but the point here is not to make them look silly. They’re perfectly capable of doing that without my help. The larger point is the disconnect between the realities of this nation and its people, and the perceived realities of many in the entertainment community. I don’t mean to sound too harsh — or hypocritical. After all, I seem perfectly happy to have cashed my checks for the more than 30 years I’ve been in television. And I’m not exactly working on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I do make a living by selling vowels and spinning a giant multicolored wheel! So who am I to be pointing fingers? Well, I’m just someone who wants to feel prouder than he does — as proud as he once was — about what goes on in his industry. And that’s why I spend only part of my time around it. I need to step back occasionally. I think it does help me see the world more clearly.”…
…”They think they have diversity in their midst because they take pains to hire a representative mix of gender and race. But there is no diversity of thought. On the great social issues of our time, there is an alarmingly monolithic view held by what has become known as the “media elite.” You can bet that the New York Times is careful about how many women it hires, but you can also bet that it is not very careful that these women hold diverse views on issues they’ll be writing about, such as the environment, gun control or abortion. My guess is that a pro-life view within the walls of the Times is a pretty rare one. And the same holds true on the entertainment side. It is just assumed that “right thinking people” hold certain views. If you don’t… well there’s the problem. How can you portray people fairly in film or on TV if you think their attitudes are so foreign? “…
Read the whole thing. Time well spent.

There is, in fact, a significant difference between loving your country, loving and being loyal to your Constitution and loving and being loyal to your government, particularly when that government has abrogated the Constitution repeatedly, and taken action against the interests of the country, only to preserve and expand its own power and authority. I am sure that climate alarmists are loyal drones of the Emperor and thus can be considered patriotic, whether it is loyalty to Obama and his tyranny, or the UN globalist movement, or loyalty to Crazy Prince Charlie, what have you. None of them, however, have any loyalty to the truth, or to their nations, or to principles of liberty enshrined in our Constitution, or those of other countries.

Their prejudice is their inability to see a sceptical viewpoint, and their wrong assumption that 97% of scientist support the idea of CAGW being true. Not to be unpleasant about it, but global warming alarmists, to the extent they argue against fossil fuel energy development in Third World countries, ARE racist because the burdens and harm resulting from the policies they advocate overwhelmingly fall on people of color, who constitute the huge bulk of people in those countries.
Der Fuehrer himself acted out global warming alarmist racism when he told those people in Soweto not to aspire to driving an SUV or having an air-conditioned home – even as his unrepentantly, phenomenally hypocritical self was in the midst of a totally fossil-fueled $100 million vacation.

light bulb moment in the UK for Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles
19 May: UK Telegraph: Matthew Holehouse: Eric Pickles, minister for darkness, overruled on street lights
Police order streetlights in Essex back on after crime wave, after Pickles claimed darkness deters burglars
Eric Pickles faces embarrassment after police ordered street lights to be switched back on in his constituency, weeks after he insisted darkening streets cuts crime…
It comes weeks after Mr Pickles, the Communities Secretary, said he “loves” having street lights turned off and claimed the darkness deters burglars because they like “ambient light”.
Two thirds of councils have dimmed or switched off street lights in order to save money…
Mr Pickles last month defended the policy to angered Conservative councillors in nearby Basildon, saying the council had been “immensely brave”.
“In a time when we are on the cusp with regards to our electricity supply, we can’t have lights burning all night on the off chance someone wants to get out and do aerobics at 3am.
“I love it because I am economy-minded. It’s saving a phenomenal amount of money, it’s decreased crime because burglars love ambient lighting, it’s nice to see the night sky and, as someone who lives in a main street that has had its lights cut off, I can get a good night’s sleep,” he said…

Its a surprise so many on this brilliant site fell for it and thought for one moment it was anything but a skewering of the tactics of the lunatic fringe of the alarmist fraternity.
Come on guys (and gals) that’s not ‘our’ sides MO is it???

Unpatriotic and racist spring from the same well: willingness, even eagerness, to sacrifice those who put non-Fabian interests first. The 3rd world is considered disposable, as is the bulk of the planet’s population. Which is, coincidentally, non-white (and non-liberal).
