Friday Funny – 97% sticky science

Josh_AGW_stickersJosh writes: There is so much to cartoon this week it is difficult to choose what to start with. I went for Brandon’s brilliant 97% data discovery. Apparently all you need to do if you want to be part of the 97% consensus that global warming is a real and present danger is just add ‘Global Warming’ or ‘Climate Change’ somewhere near or in your paper. So let’s go the extra mile and help these guys get published – let’s give them a sticker!

Brandon’s post can be found here. As you may know Queensland University have sent him a threatening letter so he has set up a legal fund, just in case.

When it’s misspelled, it’s always misspelled properly, or it would not be misspelled and would be spelled something else. Now, when its misspelling is spelled wrong, it’s never spelled something else, which is its spelling. Unless it isn’t its it.

Can I have some grant money for this statement please?

A few of these stickers could be used in the California governor’s office. There’s a chance to vote on Gov Moonbeam here.

Josh:
You could make these into Post-It® notes for IPCC peer reviewers, for every place they find in a paper that could be improved by linking some scary possibility to global warming climate change climate disruption.

good one, Josh –
of course, the pollies are no different:
16 May: Breitbart: Robert Wilde: Governor Jerry Brown: San Diego Wildfires Due to Global Warming
On Thursday, Governor Jerry Brown asserted that it is settled that climate change is a factor in the wildfires now devastating parts of San Diego County. Brown’s comments come at the same time that the Escondido Polilce Department reported that two suspects, an adult and a juvenile, have been arrested in connection with intentionally starting the fire.
According to a story in the U-T San Diego, the governor opined, “Despite what you may hear in Washington, climate change is a factor… This is not about theory. It’s not about politics. This is about fires on the ground, people’s homes.”
When Governor Brown was asked about the suspects, he responded by saying, “I do know that people do stupid things. They throw a cigarette butt out of a car…” Moreover, Brown admitted, “If someone really wants to intentionally create fires it’s unfortunately, tragically, a very easy task.” …
Brown further remarked that “we just hope and pray that a little more cold weather comes along and we have the equipment… The federal government doesn’t have as many of these ***tanker planes that can drop the water and chemicals we need.”

***Governor, u mean “tanker planes” like these?
25 Feb: San Gabriel Valley Tribune: Steve Scauzillo: Cities’ call for firefighting aircraft may be answered by Russian air tanker
A company with access to three Russian-made amphibious air tankers has responded to a call put out by cities in Los Angeles County concerned about inadequate air support for fighting frequent wildfires.
Santa Maria-based International Emergency Services has sent a proposal to a local city council member offering to lease a twin-engine turbo-jet plane that holds nearly twice as much water as the Canadian-made Super Scooper, the CL-415…
The plane, originally built for the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, was flight-tested by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent demonstration in Russia. The water-scooping planes were used to battle forest fires in Russia, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Indonesia and Israel but not yet in the United States.
The company is in the process of getting clearance to fly the planes in the United States from the Federal Aviation Administration, company officials said. One official said it may be only a few weeks away from getting FAA clearance…
The cost of leasing one plane for a year would be about $16 million, he said. Leasing it for a 180-day fire season would be $8 million. Exact figures were not included in the proposal IES sent Carrillo. Bagnard had not heard back from the Azusa councilman…
It’s perfect for California since it can scoop 3,167 gallons of water in 18 seconds without landing, putting “more water on a fire per hour,” he said…
The county used two Canadian 415 Super Scoopers on the Colby Fire, each dropping 1,600 gallons. In recent wildfires in Europe, planes are used in greater numbers at once. For example, Italy teamed up four in tandem to get a 6,400-gallon drop, according to the group’s 2011 report delivered to a conference in Washington, D.C…
http://www.sgvtribune.com/general-news/20140225/cities-call-for-firefighting-aircraft-may-be-answered-by-russian-air-tanker
a 5 March piece in the Temple City Tribune referring to the above tankers states: “Currently, the aircraft is waiting certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.” (to save posting a third link, u can find it online). have found nothing since 5 March to suggest the situation has changed.
maybe those wildfires are seen as useful to the CAGW cause!

I have a climate related paper undergoing the peer review process at present. I just realised that I didn’t include the words “climate change” or similar anywhere in the abstract. Now I know why it’s taking so long. Oh well I guess I will have to have a re-write of the abstract ready.

@urederra. Meaning I spat out my coffee.

The quote makes more sense in Spanish, I guess, where pregnant only means expecting a baby.
The point is that you cannot be a little bit pregnant, you are pregnant (expecting a baby) or you are not. 56% pregnant (expecting a baby) does not make any sense.
Same way, 97% consensus does not make any sense. There is consensus or there is not. But 56% or 97% consensus does not make sense.

Well, an unknown is always “unknown” because, once known it has become known, it is not is but is unknown. But it is an known unknown, which infers is is unknown once known. (But a specific it is also a known unknown once known, and so it can no longer be a longer unknown – though perhaps a shorter unknown known. However that introduces a variable to the known unknown, so it would revert to being an unknown known unknown.) But an abstract unknown also cannot be misspelled, because if it were spelled misspelled, then it would be spelled misspelled correctly, and not unknown. (And the now misspelled unknown could not be unknowingly spelled unknown either, but would known to be spelled misspelled correctly as soon as it was spelled misspelled correctly – so it too, could not ever be unknown. Which makes it never knowingly unknown nor misspelled, although is might be it sometimes as established above.)
