2014 Bloggies awards and "Climate Duplicitist of the Year", the award goes to…

We report the winners of the 2014 Bloggies awards and “Climate Duplicitist of the Year”.

Readers may recall the voting earlier on both contests, and now the results are in. First the Bloggies, as recorded on Twitter tonight:

Congratulations to all. I really had hoped Donna Laframboise would have placed first in that last category, but my sincere thanks to all who voted, just the same.

The poll for “Climate Duplicitist of the Year”, now closed, revealed a clear winner

Congratulations to all the Bloggers—and thank you for doing what you do: I learn a great deal from you all, and the people I meet here. I’d pass on my condolences to Dr. Mann, but truly, he earned his award; condolences are not in order. My question is, what to give him?
If you’re still thinking about an appropriate award, Anthony, if one can be found, I suggest the puppet head on a stick, as seen carried about by the Court Jester in movies about medieval times—they were typically two-faced (like the expected behaviour of a duplicitous person), laughing on one side, crying on the other, like a 14th century prompt to the studio audience (“Laughter!” “Groans of dismay!”). I think it would be very appropos for another reason: when sanity returns and all the alarmists are forced to go find something else about which to create drama and crises, Dr. Mann can take his show on the road, performing a one-man show, perhaps “The Burning Hockeystick,” an updated version of Aesop’s fable about the boy who cried, “Wolf!”—and he’ll be armed with his own audience prompt!
If one can’t be found, one could be made…with a miniature hockeystick as the handle!
Just thinkin’ out loud…
(G’day, Janice!)

‘Scuse… I did mean take his show on the road, performing a one-Mann show…

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Mann. The award to Dr. Mann will be sent next week.
Since we got to vote for the winner, don’t we get to vote for the prize?
I’d like to suggest a speaking slot at the Heartland conference in Vegas….
I’d even donate to cover part of his expenses….
Provided he agrees to answer questions….
Ah, he’d decline. How about a calendar with the instructions for how to make a calendar online spread out across the 12 months?

congratulations to all the worthy winners. hope the july conference is a great success:
MEDIA ADVISORY: International Gathering of Scientists Skeptical of Man-Caused Global Warming to Take Place in Las Vegas from July 7 to July 9
Ninth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC-9) will feature world-famous scientists and writers, precede FreedomFest 2014.
Is the theory of man-made global warming still credible? Why do surveys show a majority of Americans and scientists do not believe global warming is man-made and a major problem?
Hundreds of the world’s most prominent “skeptics” of the claim that human activity is causing a climate crisis will converge in Las Vegas on July 7–9 to review the latest research and celebrate what they see as recent events that vindicate their opposition to what some claim is a “scientific consensus.”
The Heartland Institute – which The Economist magazine in 2012 called “the world’s most prominent think tank promoting skepticism about man-made climate change” – is joining scores of other think tanks and advocacy groups to host the 9th International Conference on Climate Change at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas…
“The scientists Heartland works with demanded we host a ninth conference this year to foster a much-needed frank, honest, and open discussion of the current state of climate science,” said Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast, “and we just couldn’t refuse. The public, the press, and the scientific community will all benefit from learning about the latest research and observational data that indicate climate science is anything but ‘settled.’”…
For more information about The Heartland Institute and the 9th International Conference on Climate Change, contact Director of Communications Jim Lakely at jlakely(at)heartland.org or 312/377-4000.

I thought that this might be of interest to people here. It is part of a piece about the reaction of America’s religious types to the new version of Carl Sagan’s science show, Cosmos.
“We can see this most clearly with one of the most urgent issues confronting the human species, the danger of global climate change. While it’s a matter of uncontroversial fact among scientists that the burning of fossil fuels is changing the Earth’s climate in perilous ways, climate science is far less accepted among the public, driven by fierce resistance from those who have an ideological reason for disbelieving it.
The renowned climate scientist Michael Mann, whose work forms the basis for United Nations climate reports and the famous “hockey stick” graph that illustrates global temperature rises, has been the subject of continual harassment by conservative legislators, including frivolous subpoenas by Ken Cuccinelli, the former right-wing attorney general of Virginia, accusing him of scientific fraud. In other localities, the right-wing response to climate change has reached epic levels of head-in-the-sand denial, such as when the North Carolina legislature passed a lawforbidding science to be used in forecasting future sea-level rise.”
In this guy’s world, Micheal Mann is a renowned scientist, the Hockey Stick graph hasn’t been thouroughly discredited and the only reason that people disbelieve that the climate is changing in perilous ways is purely ideological.

Michael Mann is a perennial in the Climate Duplicitist category.
However, I genuinely believe Stephen Lewinsky can feel genuinely aggrieved at having been pipped for this award. His efforts over the course of 2013 were some of the finest expositions of duplicity I have been honoured to witness.
I do hope Dr Mann recognises the amazing achievements of Dr Lewinsky in his acceptance speech.

this hilarious piece in australia’s trendy leftist pro-CAGW website, Crikey, has been up for 6 hours, but not a comment as yet. desperate attempt to get some social media action going, yet it is the CAGW sceptic websites that take out the Bloggies!
31 March: Crikey: Melissa Sweet: Health sector urged to engage with social media advocacy around climate change
The previous Croakey post contained some advice, from the BMJ and elsewhere, for how health professionals might respond to the climate emergency.
In the article below, Fiona Armstrong, convenor of the Climate and Health Alliance, suggests the health sector should be engaging with social media, and invites you to join a social media Thunderclap on climate and health…

31 March: Australian: Staff Reporter: EU carbon plunges ahead of emissions data
Speculation EU emissions fell further than expected last year has seen the continent’s carbon price experience its biggest one day drop in a year, with the price falling more than 20 per cent to below €4, Bloomberg reports.
According to the news service, carbon futures for December fell as much as 29 per cent after Britain posted a bigger-than-expected emissions drop last week, analysts are expecting the same when EU data is released this week.
EU carbon futures had reached a 15-month high earlier in the week, Bloomberg reports, as backloading took effect.
Data from more than 12,000 installations covered by the EU’s emissions-trading system will be made public on April 1, according to a statement on the commission’s website.

Yes, congratulations to Dr Mann, or as Mark Steyn would call him, Mannhammed.
To top a hall of infamy is a notable achievement. Could you say it’s all his own work? No doubt he’d want to thank his parents, too.
This award will nicely complement his self-anointed Nobel Prize. And what company; little Napoleon crowning himself emperor and now Mann, but likely confused with which crown to wear. Perhaps that photocopy of the Nobel laurel tonight, Mikey. Go on, slip it on, Waterloo can’t be far away.

Gleick will never repeat his antics–he’ll just be one of a hundred in the alarmist choir henceforth. Lewandowsky will never again be half so lewdicrous. So there will never be an opportunity to name-and-shame them again. Mann, OTOH, is an Energizer bunny of marvels. He’ll be in the running from now to eternity.
So it’s a pity Mann’s candidacy wasn’t held back a year.
Another regret I have is that there wasn’t a vote for the top ten of the past ten years, followed by annual awards. Oh well.

Caleb –
u r wondering how “distressed” mr. gore might be. how about this aussie law lecturer!
31 March: Crikey: Melissa Sweet: On climate change and human survival: this is an emergency (and how health professionals might respond)
Meanwhile, I encourage you to also read this recent article by Peter Burdon, a lecturer in law at the University of Adelaide. He writes powerfully about the grief and emotion that many are experiencing on their own personal climate change journeys, and urges collective action:
“There is no ‘one right way’ to grieve but if you have strong networks of support the experience can be liberating and even enriching. Grieving can help us detach from our old vision and expectations for the future and adjust to a new reality. We all have capacity to readjust and in fact many of us have experienced something similar after a loved one dies or a relationship unexpectedly ends.
Following this, it is well documented that a healthy and effective response to grief is to join with others and act. Isolation is disempowering and I do not think there is anything to be gained by capitulating.
As the cellist Pablo Casals said: “The situation is hopeless; we must now take the next step.” Finding meaning in adverse circumstances is an enduring human quality and one that we need to collectively summon again….”…
To quote academic Clive Hamilton, “we need a new environmental radicalism made up of those willing to put their bodies on the line.”…

March 31, 2014 5:41 am

I suggest sending to Dr. Mann a calendar with 6 months of pictures of good scientists and some of their appropriate quotes and the last 6 months of bad scientists with their quotes.
For example, January would be Albert Einstein with his quotes about not needing 100 scientists to prove him wrong and no amount of experimentation can prove him right, a single one can prove him wrong. (The exact quote will have to be researched.) February could be Galileo Galilei who had to defend his belief in Copernicus’s works because the consensus said otherwise. And so on with other good scientists. Then starting in July, bad scientists stating with Trofim Lysenko. And so on with more bad scientists, but do not put any “global warming” scientist in the mix on purpose.

Thanks to Alan the Brit (March 31, 2014 at 1:36 am) for bringing us the report on the coverage of the latest IPCC report by the BBC. A virtually identical agenda was brought to us via our (Canada) CBC (radio) during the first hour of the program “The Current” plus newscasts that quoted Pachauri, etc. The Current had interviews with several people, none of them with a background (that we were told about) in any branch of science (one of them being the national head of the Green Party). They were just endlessly recycling what they had been told, and there was no sign of scepticism shown. The same is true of all CBC programs that I have heard.
When I returned to Canada in 1993 I used to regard the CBC as a kind of continuing education. Now so much of it is given over to lefty causes, like climate charge.

Bloggers like Laframboise and Ridley who don’t allow comments on their blogs should never have been in the running anyway.

@oldfossil – if the category was quantity or quality of comments, I would agree with you. But I read nearly every Laframboise article (which I will admit is more than the posts here). Why? Like you, I do get wrapped up in the comment side as well. But I know if I read her article, I will not get bogged down in the comments. I can come here (or several other blogs) and point out an interesting aspect of her articles (although chances are better than good that Anthony will beat me to the punch) if I feel a need to comment.
But perhaps you are correct. Maybe there needs to be a category of non-commentable blogs. In any event, I will continue to read her blog for its insight and educational benefits.

“Climate Duplicitist of the Year” has a nice ring, but not quite prestigious enough. I’d like to suggest a more distinguished title recognizing previous outstanding duplicity.
I believe that Gleick should not have been a nominee this year as his exploits occurred years ago. As such and due to his stellar contributions to duplicity, I’d suggest that the award be named in part for him to recognize these exemplary achievements.
Something like: “The Climate Duplicitist of the Year Award in Memory of Peter Gleick’s Chair of AGU’s Task Force on Scientific Ethics”
Now that has a ring to it!

Forget the bloggies (congrats to all, of course) but Donna Laframboise deserves an Order of Canada award for her courageous, dogged pursuit of the IPCC and its chair. …”

Does Canada have such an award? Then I agree! Donna Laframboise for the “Order of Canada”! It’d be cool to watch her get the award in bare feet. Let the eco-loons in their synthetic and leather shoes and clothes watch in envy.

Should the “Climate Duplicitist of the Year” actually get 2 identical awards?
You know, to drive the point home…

Congrats on this growing sidebar … just from the bloggies there’s:
Best Science Blog .. 3 times & done
Weblog of the Year .. 2 times and one to go
Lifetime Achievement .. once & done
and now,
Best Group or Community Weblog .. first time and two to go.
And the company ain’t bad either … Jo Nova, Climate Audit, Tallbloke, GWPF, & Small Dead Animals. Pity that No Frakking Consensus didn’t make the final cut. Maybe next year she’ll stand a better chance with Lifetime Achievement.

Well done to you and Jo, I look at all my emails and it takes hours, but I want to be up to date and I have to thank you both for that.

I’m still waiting for my check from Koch Brothers and big oil for my WUWT promotion and proving Climate Changers wrong. So why do I do it for nothing?
For the love of Truth, Justice, and the Watts Up With That way.
Congratulations Anthony and Crew.

Ah the design,I liked John’s suggestion of a mirror, perhaps two mirrors or just a split mirror with one half mounted upside down and the frame fashioned from that Yamal tree! Now for the runner up award perhaps call it the yellow snow consolation prize in recognition of the stain he left at UWA.
I am sure those prizes will be valued in years to come. Maybe present them through their friendly media outlet with Press Release. The Lewandowsky media release could be leaked to create advance publicity for the duplicity award.
Congratulations to all the blog hosts who are doing our hard lifting every day of the year, well done.

So Michael Mann got a real prize for once! Next year maybe he’ll get the “nuisance lawsuit filer of the year” award!

Congratulations on your “Weblog of the Year” Award. I don’t know how you can keep your energy level high enough to continue with all the high-quality posts. I drink 4 cups of coffee a day. Just wonder how many you drink. Again, congrats!!!

“My vote for award to Mann: a broken hockey stick.”
No, no, no. He already has one of those. Give him one that isn’t broken. Maybe James Hansen can fudge one together for him.

I can’t wait wait for Michael’s acceptance speech. When you post it, can I respectfully suggest the headline, “The Dissent of Mann”?
