Climate confessions as SPAM (please send money)

People send me stuff. Today I got a true confessions style email with an emotional tear jerker, and a telling graph for which they claim credit, something we predicted would happen years ago. Never mind the tanked U.S. economy and the switch to natural gas thanks to shale gas fracking, no, the emissions reduction is all due to these tear jerking NGO spammers who want the U.S. back to 1950 levels, and even if that is somehow managed, you can bet they still won’t be happy,

[name redacted] —

I have a climate confession: Recently, I’ve begun to question whether we can solve the climate crisis.

Deep down in my darkest thoughts, from everything I know, have read, have been told by the scientists at EDF about the growing threat, and from witnessing the unrelenting stream of dopey climate denialism in Washington, I’ve found it increasingly difficult to maintain hope. The fear that we won’t avert climate catastrophe has taken hold. And I shudder at what that will mean.

It’s a terrible and sobering notion, maybe one you’ve shared in recent years.

As a parent of a 9-year old and a 7-year old—two sweet, beautiful children who mean everything to me—I often ask what more can I do? How are we going to fix this problem? And what kind of world am I going to leave to my kids?

Then, about a month ago, in a meeting to discuss EDF’s climate strategy, a colleague of mine presented this graphic:

please enable images!

I had an instant reaction. This chart tells a powerful story. Over the last few years, our work really has made a difference. We have reduced America’s carbon emissions. We have altered the course of history.

For the first time in a long time I began again to feel a sense of hope…to see a path forward.

And, after discussing with the Membership team, this chart has inspired this “Climate Changing” email series we’re launching today. Between now and Earth Day, we’ll share stories and information to help you understand where we are in the fight for climate solutions…where we need to be…and how we can get there, together.

This is a serious moment. The fight to avoid climate calamity confronts us with sobering realities. While we have made progress, we have a tremendous amount of work to do. And very little time in which to do it.

It won’t be easy. But, there is a path forward—and that’s important.

You are making a difference. And I want to extend my personal heartfelt thanks for standing strong with EDF. You are helping change America and the world.

Over the next few weeks, I hope the climate solutions we’ll share will help renew our shared belief that with determination and resolve, we can still solve the climate crisis.

Sam ParryWith gratitude and renewed hope,

Sam’s signature

Sam Parry

Director, Membership

P.S. Do you have a climate confession? Have you also felt doubt in recent years over our chance to solve the climate crisis? If so, I’d love to hear your story.

Dear Sam
I do have a climate confession. I used to debate policy in High School and College. When I first noticed discussion of AGW 8 years ago I thought it would be a interesting science topic to look into. As I began reading the great majority of articles about the impending certain horrors of our impending climate doom I noticed one thing that send up a red flag for me. Proponents of AGW held skeptics and anyone who questioned their dogma in utter disdain. That did not sound very scientific to me and as I dug into the topic I discovered Climateaudit, Wattsup, The Air Vent and The Blackboard that seemed to provide a more level headed view of things. As always I began to follow the money and soon discovered that AGW proponents were locked into huge sums of grant money that in my opinion “co-opts” their ability to provide a balanced view. Luckily nature has decided to choose a path that does not agree with the AGW disasterites and I feel completely vindicated now. How many more years will it take for you to be willing to confess the error of your ways?
thanks

Yes, I have a climate confession. Arctic ice is increasing rapidly (see JAXA for one example), sunspots are about half of normal, the Pacific Ocean remains in the cool mode, and the deep cold winters have returned.

The civilization is Doomed unless…
http://news.yahoo.com/society-doomed-scientists-claim-121540351.html
“The researchers used the HANDY model to analyze three different social scenarios: an egalitarian society with no elite class; an equitable society with workers and non-workers (students, retirees, disabled persons); and an unequal society with a robust class of elites.
The egalitarian and equitable societies could produce a sustainable civilization and avoid collapse, even with a high ratio of non-workers. Social collapse was more likely after people overreached and depleted natural resources. Importantly, even without any social stratification, collapse could occur if a society exhausted its natural resources.
In the unequal society, however, collapse was almost unavoidable — and these were the HANDY scenarios that mirrored our current globalized society.”
Scientific marxism at work, hence the need for Global Warming…

Yeah I have one. As a parent of two sweet children of my own, and two step children, I bitterly resent the cataclysmic anthropogenic climate agitprop that they have been, and still are to some extent forced to endure at school. But kids aren’t daft. They know an agenda when they see one. My ten year old son is pretty disdainful, and the girls couldn’t care less. They’re more interested in justin Bieber. Hell, I am more interested in Justin Bieber than the machinations of the thought police who would like to corral our future into a fantasy that serves some obscure end only those who imagine they are intellectually, morally or even spiritually elevated by joining the priesthood of doom can understand. I don’t shove my skepticism down their throats but I do express my doubts, which only seem to harden over time, and I have been following this debate for a very long time. When people start invoking the “think of the children” meme I guess that says it all.

My confession, duly submitted:
Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.
I am part of the the shale gas revolution, which has caused US emissions to fall, by replacing coal in generating power. This natural gas renaissence has also reduced American Utility bills by billions of dollars, increased US employment and manufacturing, and seen US exports climb, reducing the balance of trade.
In spite of the positive outcomes, I feel guilty, for enabling the demon carbon, even in such form as CH4.
I beg for Gaia’s forgiveness, and ask for Her to give me strength, in the battle against the demon Carbon.
In the name of the Trinity: Gore, Hansen and Mann;

From the letter-
“As a parent of a 9-year old and a 7-year old—two sweet, beautiful children who mean everything to me-”
Hey there, pearl-clutching member of EDF. Your group and other enviro NGO’s have been screaming at the public for decades now (I’m talking at least back to Paul Ehrlich in his 1970’s heyday) that having children in the US is the worst possible carbon sin you could ever commit. Peer reviewed literature has calculated that each one of your carbon critters contributes 9441 tons of child-killing carbon pollution to your personal carbon footprint. It is clear that you could not have been ignorant of this dead-certain enviro fact before popping out two rug-rats. What is the matter with you? Why so selfish? Don’t you believe in even the simplest personal step towards solving EDF’s climate crisis?
To paraphrase the insightful Peter Huber from an article published on April 21, 2009-
If you decide to have carbon-polluting children while insisting that to save the world we must ditch the children, you are just burdening your already sooty soul with another ton of self-righteous hypocrisy. And you can’t possibly afford what it will cost to forgive that.

I have a good grounding in secondary school science, physics and maths, and also a degree in economics and statistics (including experience in computer modeling of complex non-deterministic systems) .
When I first heard about the threat of global warming, I looked into it, reading the various articles and some scientific papers that forecast a tough time unless the world reduced CO2. I was very concerned. So I dug deeper, and read an IPCC report (around eight to ten years ago). I saw the various predictions, but saw few measurements of actual temperatures etc. So I looked ’em up (they’re all available on publicly-available data bases). I found that not one of the four key IPPC predictions (air temperature, sea temperature, net radiation balance at top of atmosphere, and the tropospheric “hot spot”) were supported by the measured real-world actual evidence.
Now I’m a great believer in the scientific method. Accordingly, the only conclusion I could come to was that the various predictions of disaster were false. They were not supported by the evidence. The IPCC models were therefore incorrect.
If the measured real-world data changes to support the IPCC’s models, then I’ll change my mind and start to accept the global warming disaster story. Until then, I remain wholly unconvinced. I learned early on that real-world evidence beats computer models every time.

As a parent of a 9-year old and a 7-year old—two sweet, beautiful children who mean everything to me—I often ask what more can I do?
… this line got me thinking about this other sob story …
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. She just couldn’t understand why Gaia would undermine the efforts of fellow Warm Earthers. “Even my Grandpa?” she asked pitifully.
I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why Gaia has rushed to judgment and besmirched the good name of every Warm Earther, past and present. “And yes honey, even Grandpa”, I was forced to say.
I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult – the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. I think my daughter could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words – nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, “Honey, I just don’t know – I don’t know what’s going on in this planet anymore…”
When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, “Daddy” she said, “why is Gaia doing this to the planet ?” Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.
For once she had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it’s too much, but seeing the strength in my young daughter’s voice helped me to get through.

I have a climate confession.
Entirely without my efforts and despite continuously increasing CO2 levels needed for the life and safety and energy keeping 7 billion innocents alive for 17 years, Antarctic sea ice is increasing so steadily, so consistently, so rapidly the past 4 years, that – within 8 to 10 years – it will block the Straits of Magellan and Cape Horn to ship traffic for months every year.

The level of delusion given the state of the science is simply amazing. The past few decades have produced or revealed a level or ignorance in science that will set the stage for more failures in critical thinking ability. This is what’s so sad to me.

EDF is one of the reasons I became a skeptic—it takes a little bit of searching, but, the first time I looked at the so-called climate experts at EDF, I found 32 experts–one scientist (not related to climate), numerous lawyers, economists, and governmental interface representatives. The second time I looked, there was still just one scientist, but, the number of lawyers, economists, and government types had increased. Hence, just an agenda driven NGO, with no factual basis on climate science. A sad commentary on our system, when this type of organization continues to get funding from government, and a clueless population.

So, when we look at the dramatic turnaround of US emissions, and add to that the reduction in EU emissions over the last 20 years, then look at the GLOBAL CO2 levels, as measured in Hawaii, can we see any effect, at all, from our reductions? If not, why not? Have we not been told that all of the increase in CO2 is manmade? And that the extra CO2 in the atmosphere is all ours? Did the growth in 3rd world CO2 emissions just happen to balance our reductions perfectly, just as it’s claimed that all natural warming stopped in 1947, and all of the warming since has been due to mankind’s burning of fossil fuels?

Excellent question, actually. If one visits a site that lists at least the party-line accepted carbon budgets over the last 60 years or so, though, there is no visible peak — it is an “almost” perfectly monotonic increasing function.
Which means, interestingly enough, that the “leveling” of the curve above was in fact miraculously canceled by increases elsewhere in the system. Or perhaps that the numbers at the site I found are cooked in some way to agree with Mauna Loa — as estimating things like this seem very likely prone to large errors.

TonyG, yep… frightening.
Anthony, do you all recall how a Canadian newspaper published a letter of mea culpa on fracking from a supposed Calgary engineer… just to be debunked as a fake by Ezra Levant last fall?
“… Telegram newspaper in St. John’s published a column entitled “Some truth about fracking wouldn’t hurt,” written by an oil and gas engineer from Calgary named Syd Peters.
It was a devastating personal confession by a fracking industry insider who said he had spent 28 years polluting the environment across the U.S. and western Canada, and then “coercing landowners” and “silencing” towns to keep the industry’s dirty secrets. “This is what is coming to Newfoundland if fracking is allowed,” he wrote.
Except there is no oil and gas engineer from Calgary named Syd Peters. APEGA, Alberta’s association of professional engineers, has no record of him. He’s not in the Calgary phone book. His stories were fake, just like he is. After I raised these questions, the Telegram acknowledged they did not follow standard editorial procedures, and could not verify the author.
But the identity of “Syd” as an evil oilman was essential to the whole column. If anyone else — say, a professional environmental protester — had made the shocking allegations, he would have been asked for proof. By creating “Syd,” that credibility problem was solved. It was his personal confession.”

milodonharlani
March 20, 2014 2:25 pm

So is the author of the confession doing everything he or she can to promote fracking, since greater reliance on natural gas, along with the ongoing recession, is why US “carbon pollution” is down?
Apparently the author is also unaware of the benefit to plants, children & other living things of more abundant CO2 in the air.

Well, after serious negotiations, the USSR and NATO agreed to remove all theater nukes of that class. We have reduced America’s carbon emissions. We have altered the course of history.

Who is we? You can lay the credit at the door of the windmills and solar panels I suppose.

Abstract – 21 FEB 2014
Reduced emissions of CO2, NOx, and SO2 from U.S. power plants owing to switch from coal to natural gas with combined cycle technology
Since 1997, an increasing fraction of electric power has been generated from natural gas in the United States. Here we use data from continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), which measure emissions at the stack of most U.S. electric power generation units, to investigate how this switch affected the emissions of CO2, NOx, and SO2. Per unit of energy produced, natural gas power plants equipped with combined cycle technology emit on an average 44% of the CO2 compared with coal power plants. As a result of the increased use of natural gas, CO2 emissions from U.S. fossil-fuel power plants were 23% lower in 2012 than they would have been if coal had continued to provide the same fraction of electric power as in 1997. In addition, natural gas power plants with combined cycle technology emit less NOx and far less SO2 per unit of energy produced than coal power plants. Therefore, the increased use of natural gas has led to emission reductions of NOx (40%) and SO2 (44%), in addition to those obtained from the implementation of emission control systems on coal power plants. These benefits to air quality and climate should be weighed against the increase in emissions of methane, volatile organic compounds, and other trace gases that are associated with the production, processing, storage, and transport of natural gas.

The history of US shale gas in this article is divided into three periods and based on the change of oil price (i.e., the period before the 1970s oil crisis, the period from 1970s to 2000, and the period since 2000), the US has moved from being one of the world’s biggest importers of gas to being self-sufficient in less than a decade, with the shale gas production increasing 12-fold (from 2000 to 2010). The US domestic natural gas price hit a 10-year low in 2012. The US domestic natural gas price in the first half of 2012 was about $2 per million British Thermal Unit (BTU), compared with Brent crude, the world benchmark price for oil, now about $ 80–100/barrel, or $14–17 per million BTU. Partly due to an increase in gas-fired power generation in response to low gas prices, US carbon emissions from fossil-fuel combustion fell by 430 million ton CO2 – more than any other country – between 2006 and 2011. Shale gas also stimulated economic growth, creating 600,000 new jobs in the US by 2010. However, the US shale gas revolution would be curbed, if the environmental risks posed by hydraulic fracturing are not managed effectively. …………..

If there really was a carbon dioxide induce climate crisis you would think that the ‘risks’ of shale gas would be worth it. The lesser of the two evils? Of course it has NOTHING to do with ‘climate crisis’ and everything to do with their not so ‘hidden’ agendas. Sorry, but this is the fact. Even a former alarmist and green guru assumed the same.

Guardian – 15 June 2012
James Lovelock: The UK should be going mad for fracking
Scientist James Lovelock is the man behind Gaia theory, and once predicted doom for our climate. He discusses nuclear (good), wind power (bad) and why fracking is the future
• James Lovelock on shale gas and the problem with ‘greens’

There is no problem with the greens. They have an agenda and carbon dioxide is a convenient rallying point. It’s as simple as that.

This chart corresponds with the economy tanking. The US seriously decreased it’s economic activity, thus Co2 emissions went down to Kyoto Treaty benchmarks, even though the US didn’t sign the treaty.
So sure, we can lower Co2, if you wish to kill the economy completely, you buffoon.

“Over the last few years, our work really has made a difference.”
It sounds like Sam is confessing that he and his pals had a hand in causing the U.S. recession. Is that the “work” he’s talking about? That’s the main reason CO2 emissions have dropped. People out of work don’t drive as far or purchase large homes that require more energy.

Oh, Mario (slight smile). That is because YOU have such a good heart. You attribute to naivete what is actually say-anything-for-a-buck cynicism. That guy would tell you his mother sells drugs if you paid him enough. I have, unfortunately, known too many l1ars too well to believe the man is sincerely mistaken.

I would much rather watch Mario on his way to one of his TWO FIRST PLACES IN A ROW last weekend in his Lancer Raillert.
And since this thread’s subject author reeks, I’m going to post this to give us something worth viewing — GO, INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE!!

“Over the last few years, our work really has made a difference. We have reduced America’s carbon emissions. We have altered the course of history.”
Is this guy fracking nuts? The decline is due to two things: Obama’s kept the economy in the tank and the innovations of private industry employed on private land have dramatically increased the supply and use of natural gas vs coal in electricity generation.
Their work has made no difference other than to fill the atmosphere with hot air.
End of rant.

It’s sort of delightful the way that the US government gives grants of more than $3000000 each year to EDF, who then turn around & use that money to lobby that same government to increase their own control. “Now look here, this guy I just gave $100 to says I ought to be allowed to come into your house, drink a few beers, & flush the WC repeatedly while you’re in the shower. Seems reasonable to me!”

MY climate confession…Their models failed completely. They showed no skill in prediction. Never the less I hoped they were right but knew they were wrong. Now I am almost out of wood. I just ordered two additional cords of wood above the standard order to burn their carbonness into the atmosphere during the winter of 2014-2015. Oh the shame! Please Mr Obama, stop trying to “fix” global warming you have done a great job and we are freezing our butts off. Declare victory and move on. If you don’t stop trying to cool the earth, Mr Obama , the brutality of next winter will be your fault. and belie your promise that if you like your weather you can keep your weather.

I have a confession: I donate money to climate sceptics. About two years ago I retired. At that time I was an avid weather observer (I worked outdoors), but knew very little about climate. Then with some extra time to read up on all things weather, then climate articles of all types, blogs, news reports and most importantly, the utterly inane comments by some of the most senior officials in government of the most powerful nation on the planet. I will stop supporting the cause the day sceptics appear on private property wearing masks, and carrying torches, with the sole intent to terrorize a climate alarmist.

Yes, I have a confession. I’m as scared of climate change as I was of the Y2K changeover. For the same reasons. The alarmist arguments you make are from a bunch of hysterical, emotional know nothings who promise doom as they lack all sense of historical perspective and geological time, have no faith in human ingenuity, brook no criticism or dissent, who corrupt science as they control much of the media and many political entities, but cannot predict the future any better than your average magic 8-ball.
My derision and contempt for your alarmism grows with every mention of Lewandowsky and every whinge by Trenberth or lawsuit by Michael Mann. I’m convinced more than ever that groups like EDF and Greenpeace have drifted into unhelpful extremism, and should quietly close themselves down for the good of society. You’ll never get a penny of my charitable contributions and your futurist catastrophic visions have lost all credibility with me. Your organizations have killed any chance of influencing me toward your side in the political arena.

Notice how, for a US audience, they use metric ton in the vertical scale.
As a parent of a 9-year old and a 7-year old—two sweet, beautiful children who mean everything to me so long as I can exploit them to make money—I often ask whether I should measure their weight in kilograms or pounds and what more can I do to pull the wool over their eyes and the public’s? How are we going to cash in on this non-problem? And what kind of inheritance am I going to leave to my kids or should I spend every last red cent before I kick the bucket?
Hi, Janice. How’re you doin’?

Tom J.!
How cool to “hear” from you. Been awhile. I’m fine. Just using virtually (and hard copies, too, heh) every spare hour to do a little legal research project. Hooo — weeee. So many unexpected sub-issues and on and on and I almost went on and on, here!
Anyway, thank you for asking. How are YOU? Iprayforyouoften. I hope that you get to watch some drag (or other type) races this year. That sounded like a fine goal for you. And your artwork… . How’s that going? I hope your wonderful abilities are bringing you joy.
Yeah, “Sam” mentioning his (or her, heh, heh, that was funny…) kids really MADE ME SICK. I love kids, but, when people bring their kids into ANYTHING for SALES purposes, I usually am repulsed at the exploitation aspect to it.: “Believe me. I’m a parent” or “I’m a parent. I care.” Barf. I guess, I’ve just known too many creeps who have kids. Lots of super wonderful people with wonderful kids are out there, too. And who are trustworthy on their own merits. And who care.
Wish I had some “news” to share, but — I — don’t. If I find a job or anything else significant happens, I’ll announce it in ALL CAPS and bold on WUWT.
Take care, out there (and keep warm!),
Janice

When I was in my 20’s, in the 1975-1985 period, there was a very real and present danger of nuclear war. Many people around the western world genuinely believed that catastrophe was possible, even likely
But what could we do? Not a lot – except that one of the real choices that many of us made was to not start a family when there seemed little hope for a safe future.
By the mid 80’s things looked more hopefull, and I did have children, and now have two beautiful young adult family members.
It seems to me that if Sam Parry really is “a parent of a 9-year old and a 7-year old—two sweet, beautiful children who mean everything to me” – and if he really believes that climate catastrophe is a real danger, then he is a SELFISH A-HOLE!

I have a confession:-)
I’m a tree-hugger. I have 30 acres in the Ozarks that used to have 13 acres of pasture but I allowed re-forestation to occur there and would like to ask the population at large to help with the growth of my young trees by putting more CO2 into the air in anyway possible. Please help.
Religions can’t usually be dis-proved, cults can but they still believe.

I’m reminded of an old joke about “having children proves the concept of heredity – if your parents didn’t have any children, then you won’t either”.
I agree with others here – apparently about 9 years ago, he decided the world WAS a safe place to raise children. Wonder how his wife shuttles those kids around…

“We have altered the course of history.”
Megalomania anyone?
Perhaps not history per se, but they’ve certainly wreaked havoc on science, and on worldwide economies, causing lowered living standards very likely shortening lives of poor peoples. The trillions spent on the totally useless and even harmful study of manmade CO2’s supposed harmful effects, and the policies implemented based on those studies will certainly have long-lasting repercussions.
So, for all of that they should give themselves a well-deserved pat on the back.

So is the author of the confession doing everything he or she can to promote fracking, since greater reliance on natural gas, along with the ongoing recession, is why US “carbon pollution” is down?

No. EDF decided early to only specialize in U.S. recessions. Their experts calculated that destroying the economy brings immediate ROIs 2 or 3 orders of magnitude higher than energy efficiency efforts in a growing economy.
