New Gallup poll shows climate change near the bottom of things worth worrying about

While some people speculate there was a climate bloviage link to the recent loss of a congressional seat in Florida, we have the name calling all nighter clownfest in the Senate last Monday.

Bjørn Lomborg writes on his Facebook page: A new survey from Gallup shows that Americans don’t worry all that much about global warming.

worrying_topics

This is very similar to the survey showing Europeans worrying a lot more about almost all other issues than global warming, https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152349665523968

This does not mean that global warming is not a problem or something that needs to be addressed. But it does indicate that politicians are vastly overhyping the discussion and likely doing us a great disservice by focusing on short-term fixes like solar and wind that have huge costs but almost no benefits.

It is also encouraging that race relations is the least important worry in the US now.

Data: http://www.gallup.com/poll/167843/climate-change-not-top-worry.aspx

==============================================================

Meanwhile the senate fiddles with name-calling while their constituents burn. “just some guy” writes via email:

Forbes has a good article today stating that Alex Sink’s loss was as much a part of global warming alarmism as anything else.  This loss represents a true bellwether as Democrats and Republicans spent over $12 million dollars on this single race.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamestaylor/2014/03/12/alex-sink-rides-global-warming-alarmism-to-surprise-congressional-defeat-in-fl-13/

And, from Stephen Rasey in  a comment about the congressional record from the Senate all-nighter:

Fuel scarcity drives up unemployment
That poll is clear evidence of Climate Fascists seeking to impose their political policies when they have little political support and which are contrary to scientific evidence given the very poor performance of climate models.
Economist James Hamilton shows that the economy and unemployment are strongly impacted by the price of fuel. Senate Democrats the Keystone XL pipeline are effectively working to increase unemployment.
They would do far better to find ways to provide abundant fuel rather than reduce fuel availability and increase national INsecurity. See:
James Hamilton “Historical Oil Shocks,” in Routledge Handbook of Major Events in Economic History, pp. 239-265, edited by Randall E. Parker and Robert Whaples, New York: Routledge Taylor and Francis Group, 2013. Working paper version here.

Alex Sink’s loss and Jolly’s win in Florida may be a portent of things to come. The Republican, Jolly, was outspent 3 to 1 by Sink. The main important factor in the race was that Jolly was extremely anti-Obamacare.
The chart of things that the US worries about show the disconnect between the current administration and the populace. The administration is doing its darndest to avoid addressing the top six and focusing on the bottom three.

Lol – while the democrats hold an all night session in the senate bloviating CO2 garbage, meanwhile down in Florida their world comes crashing down. The Republican cream them. How sweet is that? Yep, panic spreading in Obamaland. Today global warming thrown over the side in an all out effort to save their useless existence.

Well, it’s technically true that people’s opinion doesn’t make something a real problem or not. But I see absolutely no objective evidence that “global warming” is a problem. Does the author believe it is?

As a registered Democrat I can say that Climate Change is at the top of my worry list… but not for the reason you may think. I am worried that we will be taxed to death by big-government, and Climate Change is being used as the big-stick with which to beat the working man into submission. It is a facilitating device, and nothing more. Also, the Climate Change meme is being used to fund stupendously expensive crony capitalistic dead-ends, instead of going after real problems – i.e. the rest of the Gallop Poll list.
So, enough already.
My message to representatives and legislators from the local subcommittees to the leaders of the DNC is “get off the climate change bandwagon, or through my vote in the primaries and general elections I will put someone else in your place that will address the real issues this world faces.”
This is what just happened in Pinellas County, FL.

Best way to turn people off climate change is to tell them the so called expert predictions have failed, 98% of their predictions have not come true. Why should we listen to those whose predictions have failed ?

March 12, 2014 11:10 am

The egregious stupidity of Harry Reid, Danne feinstein,Barbara Boxer and Al Franken can only be fixed with a state funeral, after all of them die or disappear as soon as possible, we cam’t afford them or their stupidity. Truly, science advances only one funeral at a time.

The democrats have left themselves with no way out. Climate change is a political failure as green energy is a job killing scam that does not significantly reduce CO2 emissions. If AGW has a problem nuclear energy is the solution. The public and the media are gradually becoming aware that green scam energy leads to a tripling and quadrupling of electricity costs in addition to destroying jobs.
The second part of this spectacular fiasco is approaching quickly.
The planet is going to unequivocally cool. The changes in climate that have been observed over the last couple of years are support for the assertion that the mechanism that was inhibiting the solar magnetic cycle modulation of planetary cloud cover and that caused the majority of the warming over the last warming over the last 20 years has started to abate.

Snowfall totals in southeastern Michigan could come close to breaking a 133-year-old record. The storm will likely move the Detroit area close to the seasonal snow total of 93.6 inches set in 1880-1881, according to the weather service.
Chicago had already been buried by 75.5 inches of snow this winter — the fourth most on record dating back to 1884-1885, according to the weather service. The snowfall on Wednesday pushed the seasonal total into third place, ahead of the 77.0 inch total from 1969-1970, though with some snow still falling Wednesday morning a final tally was not complete.

The population in general don’t have it’s eye on the bottom of the list so this is where progressives have the easiest time making headway. Additionally as you move down the chart the bigger the prize and this is where the action on Health Care gains control of 20% of the economy and Climate Change driven Energy Policy activities cover everything else.

My response to the “denier” name calling is this:
You who deny the REAL science, and support policies like carbon taxes, cap-and-trade and the ethanol program are both the perpetrators and deniers of a very real NEW HOLOCAUST, with tens of thousands dying from hypothermia (UK) because carbon taxes make them unable to afford to heat their homes; hundreds of thousands losing electric service (Germany) due to over-reliance on “renewables,” with similar mortal consequences; and millions starving or dying of malnutrition (sub-Saharan Africa, even Mexico) because of the diversion of food crops to fuel.
The incredible hypocrisy, the sheer brass balls, of Holocaust PERPETRATORS trying to associate those of us skeptics – who are only trying to stop this new Holocaust – with deniers of the Jewish Holocaust.
All the afore-named senators who use this term already have a lot of blood on their hands, and are arguably thirsting for more.

March 12, 2014 11:47 am

From my Real Science comment:
In order to get “the little people” worried about global warming climate change the fear mongers needed to make up a bunch of bs “scary scenarios” that were pure bs. Their own words:
“Unless we announce disasters no one will listen.” -Sir John Houghton, the first ipcc chair
“We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.” -Stephen Schneider, lead ipcc author, 1989
“The only way to get our society to truly change is to frighten people with the possibility of a catastrophe.” -Daniel Botkin, ex Chair of Environmental Studies, UCSB
The people won’t listen to them, they admit, unless they are constantly druming up pure scare mongering baloney. Eventually, though, the people start to grow weary of or get wise to this. Or the people have just had enough, realizing that the scary scenarios are little more than fabricated hogwash. Now their most recent and outlandish “scary scenario” is a patently absurd notion that thawing corpses will reinfect the world with small pox.
Right, this small pox thing is the latest scary scenario they’ve “offered up,” and the Dems got their idea on how they want to “truly change” society as they are filibustering on climate change in the senate the other night. The idea of the Dems, taken directly from Obama’s Science Czar John Holdren is to “de-develop the United States… [and] design a stable, low-consumption economy.” Or force us to suffer with $10+ a gallon gas prices as Obama’s ex Energy Secretary Chu said “somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe,” or Obama himself who said that his plan (that thankfully he has not yet been able to implement) would cause electricity prices to skyrocket. Yeah, skyrocket, Obama’s word. Total craziness. Here we have China and Russia going full speed ahead with developing their countries and energy infrastructures, while are effete pusillanimous leaders seek to unilaterally eunuch-ize our own country. Sad. Horrendous actually.

March 12, 2014 12:01 pm

I can only deduce one thing from that Gallup poll.
I deduce that the public is realizing the problem is the idea that the government can be a solution for those ‘problems’.
The idea of absence of government in many of those areas is now becoming a new paradigm.

“This does not mean that global warming is not a problem or something that needs to be addressed. “
True. Likewise, it does not mean that global warming is a problem that needs to be addressed. Only empirical evidence showing that man made CO2 causes harmful global warming would imply such a thing, and such evidence is nowhere to be found.

While folks here may gloat over the scientific demise of AGW (etc.), a quick review of news stories shows it is alive and well. By at least a 10:1 margin, stories about some new finding or technology to combat the “dangerous rise in temperature” outnumber anything rational. With massive government programs to support Renewable Energy. Or Electric Cars. The bad guys are laughing all the way to the bank.

That’s because the MSM, in their misguided attempts to give both sides to the story are giving an unfair advantage to what is, after all, a “minority viewpoint”. They need to do much, much more to communicate climate change, and letting people know that the science is basically settled now. Climate scientists could also do more in the communicating climate change realm, even though they may think that isn’t their job. People also just need to make the connection between climate change and how it affects their daily lives. From more powerful storms, to floods, droughts, and all types of extreme weather events, to rising seas, including the enormous costs involved, people can make those kinds of connections. Often, it is the resistance to new ideas, or the fact that those ideas may be seen as somehow a threat that can keep people from accepting something that has been shown to be true by thousands of scientists working for many years. Very young children, on the other hand, often have little difficulty accepting such ideas. They even become excited by them, and want to know how they can help. They are often a link to reluctant parents, getting them to think about things like recycling and changing to low energy lighting.

The senators involved called themselves a “taskforce.” Taskforces came into their own in the naval commands of WWII. They were, and are, specific units formed to accomplish a particular objective, or “task.”
What, precisely, do these senators (D) consider the task? What forces are to be dedicated to their goal?
I’m not being wholly rhetorical: you cannot define the task. The forces are spurious or non-existent.
I would be more interested in what these senators (D) have to say if they did not appear to be indulging themselves in a fund-raising stunt.

Boy, would me choices be in a different order. I’d out climate change dead last. Nothing our government touches works out well. My number one would be the size and power of the federal government because all other problems are influenced by this.
Thanks to the ACA our family of 4 health insurance, which we pay for ourselves because hubby is self-employed, went up $200 a month as soon as the law passed. We got a call yesterday from our insurance broker that our plan is going up $300 a month. $500 more a month, The president said we would save up to $2500 a year. Good point. I often provide fact-finding for articles forwarded to me from friends. I usually refute the first 2-5 statements. If they’re egregiously wrong, the remainder are disregarded as having a high probability of being wrong. One would say using the term “denier” 28 times in a single session is remarkable. Where is the Anti-Defamation Leage to condemn the US Senate this time?
Even the Nazi Analogy is thrown in, by Angus Stanley King, Jr., Senator from Maine, rather eloquently and in much detail (S1406).

“In the 1930s, Europe and particularly England faced a challenge. They faced a challenge that was to their very survival. But for almost the entire decade of the 1930s, England didn’t face that challenge. They did not act, even though the data was overwhelming, even though the facts were compelling, even though their greatest parliamentarian, the greatest parliamentarian in English history — at least recent English history — continuously warned them. Winston Churchill spent a good part of the 1930s warning his country about the dangers of the rise of Nazi Germany. But people didn’t listen, and they didn’t listen for much the same reason I think people aren’t listening now — because it is hard to take on a new challenge. It is hard to take on something that will have a cost. It is hard to take on something that will entail risk. But ignoring warnings has consequences. In the case of the 1930s in England and ignoring Winston Churchill’s warnings, the consequences were 55 million people dead.”

It is of course skipped conveniently in the video excerpt.

Famous dictators and unpleasant regimes include:
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was elected to the rubber-stamp parliament with 100% votes on Monday…
Supreme Leader Kim Jong-il fared almost as well as his son in 2009, winning 99.9 % of votes…
Saddam Hussein also won 100% votes in a 2002 referendum…
Raul Castro earned 99.4% votes in the 2008 Cuban election…
Syria’s Bashar al-Assad secured 97.6% votes for his 2007 presidential referendum…

March 12, 2014 3:30 pm

Isn’t it ironic that the actions of our elected politicians to address the global warming/climate change that citizens are not concerned about, are exactly the wrong things to be doing in order to address many of the the legit issues that people are concerned with.
This is a serious conflict involving government imposing its will based on their agenda vs providing citizens with the service/job, that these politicians were voted into office to do.
If I pay a landscaper to mow the lawn, rake the leaves and sweep the sidewalk and he decides those jobs aren’t important but instead decides my landscaping bushes are ugly and pulls them out based on his “expert” opinion, his ars is fired and he gets a lawsuit, demanding replacement value for the bushes and my money back that I paid him to cut the grass.
This is exactly why the size and power of the federal government is near the top of that list, as well as excessive spending based on agenda’s of government.
We went these people to make decisions that GROW THE ECONOMY, INCREASE JOBS, make ENERGY MORE AFFORDABLE and CUT SPENDING!!!!!

@Eric Smpson –
I graduated from UCSB and received my PhD in American history from there in 1970.
I recently wrote to chancellor Henry Yang and told him that as long as his institution indulged itself in the anti-science of global warming alarmism, I would not donate, and I asked him to remove my name from the alumni association list and stop sending me requests for donations until such time as all the alarmists and lefties are gone from the faculty there.
Judging from the namby-pamby reply I got, I have to assume I didn’t make a dent in their smug belief in themselves, so I suppose I wasted my time writing. But at least, hopefully, I won’t get any more whining from them for money to support their bad habits. And I’ll know they aren’t spending my money to pursue their odious agenda.
Alumni who see their institutions descending into this sort of medieval knavery should also tell those institutions to buzz off when they come crying for money.

@Berenyi Peter (my apologies, my keyboard can’t provide3 the accent):
The new Holocaust to which I previously referred here is already up to something like 3 million in total. Some idea of how that might climb not only from climate alarmism, but also from other misdeeds by these mollusks in the Senate: how about increased cancer death rates due to Obamacare keeping late-stage cancer patients – or all cancer patients – from getting prompt treatment and the medicines they need (cancer death rates in socialized medicine countries are 20% higher than in the US, though Canada does a little nbetter because Canadiqans sometimes can get access to US cancer care)? And then we have an avowed eugenicist as the White House “science” advisor.
It’s all tied up together. Not hard to understand the determination of the alarmists.

Doggie treat and a pat on the head to Senator Bernie Sanders for blessing us with an utterly predictable 20 year-old talking point, pg 21, center column near the top: “… the debate we are having now is very reminiscent of the debate we had 30 or 40 years ago about the role tobacco plays in cancer … We had people, well-funded by the Tobacco Institute, … saying: You know smoking is okay; there is no evidence linking smoking to cancer. Well, they were lying … I think we are in the same position now. A lot of the information—misinformation—which is coming forward is funded by the fossil fuel industry …”
I won’t be holding my breath waiting for Senator Sanders to provide an iota of evidence proving a paid arrangement exists with any skeptic climate scientist for the fabrication of false climate assessments.

It will get real interesting if the Germans pull the rug out from under Obama and the whole of the so called Renewable Energy scammers, er! industry! And that is starting to appear quite close indeed.
And if the Germans go so do the Brits and everybody else across Europe, probably with a huge sigh of relief from most of the populace.

Re the Florida election-
In Australia, if the incumbent is beaten, it was local politics to blame. If the incumbent is successful, it is a reflection on the federal policies.

“But it does indicate that politicians are vastly overhyping the discussion and likely doing us a great disservice by focusing on short-term fixes like solar and wind that have huge costs but almost no benefits.’
Bloke down the pub says: Fixes is debatable.
“Fix,” I’m sure, is meant in the veterinarian sense of “cut the balls off.” E.g., “Obama is fixing the US economy as rapidly as he can.”

looks like opinion polls = the ‘consensus’ now?
“According to a US study by Yale’s Tony Leiserowitz (pdf), 70% of those surveyed want something to be done about climate change, compared to a paltry 18% who are doubtful or dismissive of climate change. This compares to US support for gay marriage of just above 50%.
If there were any more consensus that something should be done about climate change, it’d be as contested as a puppy rescue. All the fake controversy drummed up by deniers makes climate the perfect social media opportunity for brands.”
To believe and parrot the predictions from unvalidated models doesn’t strike me as the qualification that someone has the ability to tell truth from false? rather its the position of a groupie.
co2 is about selling a ‘story’ regardless of the evidence or non evidence. He tries to sell co2 driven change with terms like Emotional resonance and social currency. These must be the new drivers of climate? If the climate modellers are putting emotional resonance and social currency into their models then maybe we should be told?

global warming warning label on the gas pump?
“The purpose of a global warming warning label on the gas pump may be comparable to the purpose of the surgeon general’s warning on a pack of cigarettes. Consumers of both gas and cigarettes are reminded every time they use the product that there are long-term consequences.”

wonder what the reaction would be if they put the labels on imports from china [land of the smog]?

The Senate’s SCAT show only showed to Americans that too many in government are full of it and spreading it around. The more the SCAT players do their poorly coordinated, badly informed obviously deceptive fun and games, the stronger their odor gets.

There is a double entry in the survey choice list for 1) Federal Spending and the Budget Deficit and 2) The Size and power of the Federal Govt. One of these could be dropped, making room for the additional category about concern for politically motivated destruction of the science process in Global Warming alarmism.

From the posting: This does not mean that global warming is not a problem or something that needs to be addressed
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It is not clear to me whose comment this is, but what global warming, pray tell, and even if there were, then what problem, pray tell.

How about a repeat showing of the epic fail by the consensus and global climate models.

That chart is in almost the exact reverse order of the issues the LameLeft touts as important and would have us worry about and act on. The megaphones blare on, but have been tuned out by their audience.

The people who claim they believed in Hansenite Computer Modeling are crapping their pants daily as their entire legacy as scientifically legitimate – ever – evaporates.
The Hansen Concensus didn’t know James Hansen’s computer models don’t have the atmosphere operating according to ideal gas law, which is how it actually operates, and the Hansen Consensus Science clowns, are completely lacking in anything but an abiding despisement of the scientists who told everybody else and them too,
that they were as goofy as the predictions their scientific leadership in ”consensus” alleged.
The crawfishing will continue with everyone who is a ”consensus” believer doing all they can to hinder science moving past the sewer they injected into it, for as long as barking at the moon with spaghettti graphs, draws crowds of naive suckers.

Incidentally the outcry that “James Hansen’s models don’t depict the atmosphere responding according to ideal gas law was originally raised by Hansen’s past co-workers who knew what he was doing. They were the people who put men on the moon and had pioneered computer programming vis-a-vis atmospheric energy and atmospheric chemistry.
There is an article here about the 40 N.A.S.A. scientists with “The Right Climate Stuff” where there are six or seven Astronauts and another 30 N.A.S.A. employees who deride James Hansen and declare their actual embarrassment he represents them.
James Hansen’s friends who computer model the atmosphere don’t model it according to the way the atmosphere’s actually known to work, which is where the original claims of his models not obeying the laws of thermodynamics come from. Ideal gas law is proper thermodynamics.
Hansen’s computer modeling generation who are so eager to insult everyone who catches them spamming fraud, don’t model the atmosphere in even marginally realistic ways; which is why, every time you talk with someone who believes in “Hansen Consensus Science” its like you are arguing with an angry drunk. They’re angry because they’re so easily made fools of.
That’s the Hansen Computer Model believing concensus. Angry they are so easily made utter fools of; with offhand ease. It was originally a computer modeling grants scam.
Eventually it became Al Gore’s patented comeback tour.
It was always junk science.
