I made it back to a computer in time today to get a copy of the State of the Union address, here are the relevant passages about climate:
“Now, one of the biggest factors in bringing more jobs back is our commitment to American energy. The all-of-the-above energy strategy I announced a few years ago is working, and today, America is closer to energy independence than we’ve been in decades.
One of the reasons why is natural gas – if extracted safely, it’s the bridge fuel that can power our economy with less of the carbon pollution that causes climate change. When we rescued our automakers, for example, we worked with them to set higher fuel efficiency standards for our cars. In the coming months, I’ll build on that success by setting new standards for our trucks, so we can keep driving down oil imports and what we pay at the pump.
Taken together, our energy policy is creating jobs and leading to a cleaner, safer planet. Over the past eight years, the United States has reduced our total carbon pollution more than any other nation on Earth. But we have to act with more urgency – because a changing climate is already harming western communities struggling with drought, and coastal cities dealing with floods. That’s why I directed my administration to work with states, utilities, and others to set new standards on the amount of carbon pollution our power plants are allowed to dump into the air. Let’s not forget that der Fuehrer’s meme isn’t about climate, or CO2, or man’s activities and their effect on climate – it is his pretext for regulating and taxing everything to death. He repeats all the usual superstitions about “carbon pollution” and “renewable” energy.
He glosses over the 1,500,000 jobs that will be lost because of his war on coal (i.e., his reinstitution of the Salem witch trials of 1693), and the additional 800,000 jobs to be lost because of his denial of the Keystone pipeline – all of which will have exactly ZERO effect on climate.
The reptiles, mendacity knows no bounds.

…they’ll wonder why a guy with a carbon footprint estimated at 41,000 tons, who sends his family and dogs off on separate flights for vacations in far off ritzy spots, who takes crosscountry flights to give 30 minute speeches, who keeps the White House at a toasty 77F, and who goes to the golf course every couple of weeks in a 17 vehicle motorcade has the cajones to lecture anyone.
Climate change is a fact. But the causes of that change are speculative and more often political.
So carbon, the basis of life, is a pollutant. The idiocy of our politicians seems to know no bounds.
Quote “stops giving $4 billion a year to fossil fuel industries”. Is this Orwellian newspeak for the difference between what we could confiscate and what we actually do? What we let you keep is a gift since you didn’t earn that.

You really have to admire the chutzpah of a math and science illiterate lecturing anyone about the veracity of ‘climate change’ science.
Notice he is taking credit for the increase of natural gas production and the decrease of CO2 emissions, neither of which he should rightly get credit for except for the slowing of economic activity. He gets that the laborer that installs a solar panel is a non-outsourced worker but says nothing about the high cost of subsides (in the true meaning of the term). Then mentions the $4 B to fossil fuel industries that is not a subsidy, but rather investment incentives via tax breaks.** The higher fuel standard (54.5 mpg) is unlikely to be met unless they somehow cheat, say by burning coal to make electricity to power vehicles either full or part time. Look for exemptions or some sort of new-speak to be used.

As Mr Sorenson said above, this is far more ‘sensible’ than I expected from a guy who no doubt shares bunk-beds with the Al Gore. I truly am amazed by his restraint. I know he must have wanted to die in having to switch from saying “Global warming is a fact” to what he said instead. Despite representing nearly all official scientific bodies in blasé fashion by giving mere lip service to the climate modeled emergency, he acted as a good leader by educating low information voters that fracking should be encouraged by government instead of thwarted. A little under a billion goes for home heating subsidies so that all those people in the NE who can’t afford heating oil won’t be able to afford any at all. Chop that!

With, say, 132 million houses in the USA and 176,000 already completed installations (2011 US Housing Survey) at the current rate it will take about 1,000 years for the entire housing stock to be fitted. I’m rather surprised that this is something to be proud of, for a nation with such a “can-do” ethos …

It looks to me like Obama is doing a bit of jui-jitsu with the environmentalists. What he really seems to want to promote is fracking, which the environmentalists are of course opposed to. So he’s justifying it by sounding like a full-bore zealot on climate change, nullifying any opposition from that quarter. He’s saying we have to go big on fracking in order to save the west coast from droughts and the east coast from storms and floods. All BS, of course, but smart politics. Notice that he’s not calling for carbon taxes or cap and trade or any sort of UN taxation transfers to other nations. Who knows what he really believes, but though he’s seeming to give some rhetorical support to the climate change believer crowd, he’s not actually doing anything they want, and in fact doing things that the environmentalists oppose – fracking. Not so dumb, really.
Well, thank you, R. Murphy. Prayer is what we need most. “Oh, dear God, help us.” And you know what? I believe He will. Just watch and see what the Lord will do…. . Choose to live in hope, Americans! Truth will win — it always does.

Did you notice that Obama did not mention science in connection with climate. Instead he talks of a debate being settled. They might have finally realized that all talk of consensus science was anti-scientific and that scientific observations do not support their claims of facts.
What, if anything, does Obama mean when he says that “carbon pollution” causes “climate change”? Doesn’t he realize that scientific research has not proved there to be a cause and effect relationship between CO2 concentrations and global temperatures? Doesn’t he grasp that our climate changes with or without man-made emissions of CO2? Doesn’t Obama realize that putting unemployed people into low productivity jobs such as installing solar panels is the road to economic ruin for the people of the U.S. rather than the opposite? Why does Obama wish to increase our supply of labor by opening our borders to cheaper foreign labor in a period of high unemployment? Does Obama have a clue to logic or to elementary economics? Can’t we attract better people into public office than Obama?

The pristine Federal land he protecting in North Dakota is the farm land brought back from the farmers in the thirties. Prairie land once plowed is not pristine and to top it off the mineral acres are owned by BNSF. The reason BNSF owns the mineral right ids that the land was land grant land the railroad received to build the track that runs through North Dakota, Pristine my a**, any body who has a half a brain can till grassland that pristine from that that been plowed, the contrast is stark. On top of that the only surface owner that can denied a mineral owner his property is the Federal government. The only good thing about most of the so called wilderness area is so small the oil can be extracted by stand off on the next section and then drill under the so called wilderness area..
There’s no hope when you have a president who doesn’t know the difference between carbon and carbon dioxide. Carbon is too valuable to waste by polluting the air with it.

The Government gives $4B per year to fossil fuel industries ?? Howcome ?? The US government, is the biggest beneficiary of fossil fuel industries; and they don’t get a dime from the government.

I cannot add more because most of the comments were great, but the one one sentence that Obama said ( and to many it may not mean much), is when he used the word “pound” to describe a contractor placing a solar panel, my hair actually stood on end (i think somebody else mentioned it) it somewhat reminds me of Khrushchev using his “shoe” at the UN. Somehow for a moment moment Obama lost his composure (community organizer popped up?). And although most of the time he followed script thus fooling most if not all of you he made a few more bizarre statements. Do not laugh, please , this guy (and the group behind him). Do not ridicule him (them). There was also not much of a “balloon type , happy days are here again” departure after the speech less than 2 minutes btw.

Well Solyndra didn’t GO bankrupt .
They were insolvent before they even opened their doors.
You have to be really dumb to build a PV solar cell, that is cylindrical, and built out of hygroscopic material. A cylinder has three times the area of a flat strip as wide as its diameter (well pi times).
So glass making is a very energy intensive process, and you need three times as much. Well I see I forgot the hygroscopy; that cylinder has to be hermetically sealed inside a bigger glass cylinder; so it’s 6 times as much glass (ok already; 2pi times !).
And being a cylinder, they are as thick as they are wide, so when the sun is not overhead, they cast a big shadow, so you can’t butt them up against each other like flat cells. So they require at least three times as much roof area as flat cells (make that pi also for commonality).
Did I mention they cast a shadow; well they even shadow themselves. The sun shines on the curved surface somewhat like a flat one, but then the sides of the cylinder are edgewise on to the sun, so they don’t get uniformly illuminated.
Guess what happens when you parallel up two solar cells, and put more light on one than the other; well the same thing happens if you put less light on one cell than the other.
The cell with the lower light on it, generates a lower forward Voltage, than the cell with the brighter light, so instead of putting out a current onto the power buss, it partially shorts the higher Voltage cell (current hogging), so it wastes some of the current from the high Voltage cell.
Because cylinders are cylindrical, and the sun moves around them, so the illuminated part changes continually; the whole surface has to be a single cell; can’t be multiple cells, so they current hog themselves.
Anyone making or installing solar panels, knows that cells in parallel, all have to be equally illuminated. So a shadow from a tree is intolerable, and will lead to current hogging losses.
The Solyndra solar panel (tube) was an engineering scandal, long before it became a financial scandal, or a political scandal.

In the 1970s there were >6000 weather stations which provided data to compile global temperature records. Now, fewer than 1100 stations are used, heavily biased to urban heat islands, lower latitudes and elevations. Joe D’Aleo gets it. Start at about 3:05 for the busy viewer. One station remains to record temperature in Canada north of 65deg North.
I am glad it’s not only the science, but the the debate is settled as well.

The problem with switching from coal to natural gas to reduce CO2 emissions is that it is a one time savings. Once you take credit for this type of CO2 reduction, the only next step (other than nuclear) is to actually reduce energy use. I’ll wager it is impossible for a rich country to significantly reduce its energy use and grow its economy or improve living standards beyond the current incremental improvements enjoyed through technological advance. Whatever will happen to future global temperatures we are “locked in” to future CO2 emission increases. As evidence I offer the economies of China, India and the USA.
Obama did nothing. The good results are a result of private enterprise getting around his onerous regulations! Obama is like the mugger who claims credit for his victim recovering from the wounds HE inflicted!

There was also a part of the President’s speech where he implied that the drought in California is due to climate change [really global warming caused by man}. It is really strange that he should make those flawed comments as it is well known and documented in the scientific community with many peer reviewed papers that the drought is primarily due to the positive AMO and the negative PDO pattern like the period of 1945-1950’s and again 1905-1915 and a blocking. high which diverts the rains to the north. It is even stranger to pick this region to comment on during an evening when 90% of the country is in the coldest deep freeze since the late 1970’s and the winters have been getting colder in every state including CALIFORNIA for 15 years now . There has been no global warming in United States for 15 years . It is tragic when even the President participates in misleading the entire nation about the state of the climate in his own country for political gain..

I would like to praise the noble climate scientists who have labored for decades and have finally succeeded in reaching a consensus that climate change is real. I would like also to praise the president who gives us hopey that he can stop that climate changey before it kills our children with fiery icy even if he has to use executive orders. Evidently he will do this by encouraging the production of fracking free gas which will reduce the CO2 and stop the changing while providing the fuel to keep us cool or warm as the case might be. All is right with the world.

Alarmists have taken to depicting the current controversy as “those who accept that global warming is occurring versus those that deny it.”
The controversy is far more nuanced than that. The real question is not whether CO2 is a green house gas (it is), or whether there has been warming over the last 50 years (sure seems to be, although there is room to question the amouint). The biggest question is over how sensitive the climate is to CO2 forcing. The computer models assume a high sensitivity while the evidence seems to show a much lower sensitivity.
That Obama would so grossly ignore the real controversy in such an important topic is not worthy of a president.

I am old enough to remember when anyone could take in wash, clean a house, mow a lawn, baby sit kids or start any number of small businesses with ease. I also remember when a friend had to close his small business of cleaning offices because of changes in the regulations. another friend with a small vineyard was told the lees (seeds and stems) of his grapes were “Hazardous Waste” and had to be disposed of properly and he had to fill out forms that had to be turned into the state. Heck one state told me I had to have my horse manure inspected before giving it to a neighbor for her garden! I have solar panels on my house, which cut my (nominal) electric bill by half. However, since I paid only 30 percent of the actual cost of my panels for them, and the other 70 percent came from taxpayer subsidies – and my other electric rates (PG&E territory, California) are at least double what they would be without “renewable energy” mandates – I’m not really saving any money by my solar panels, because I’m paying way more than the difference – the savings on my PG&E bill – in taxes for the panels.
If there were no renewables mandates and other artificial costs to jack up electric rates it would never make sense to have solar panels on your house.
It would seem that the whole rationale for “renewable energy” (except hydroelectric, which the envirolunatics don’t count as renewable) reflects some serious economic illiteracy.
If Obama were really committed to education (as opposed to Common Core-type leftist propaganda indoctrination), he’d see to it that economics and business management were taught starting in the first grade (something I’ve been advocating for a long time).
Economic illiteracy is a major element in global warming alarmism and “green” initiatives generally.
Finally, one wonders how this self-proclaimed champion of the poor can rationalize sticking it to the poor with high energy costs, which affect not only their electric, home heating and gasoline bills but the cost of all their necessaries that move by electricity or motor fuel. Meanwhile, back in reality land … The entire metro Atlanta area is gridlocked because of about 3 inches (7.4 cm) of snowfall plus temperatures 20°F (11°C) below normal. Is this climate change? I have no idea. It is certainly weather. But most importantly it is weather for which Atlanta, metro area residents, and the state of Georgia were effectively unprepared.
I have no idea what this mess is going to end up costing, but it will be a bundle.
Way too much time & money spent on “climate change” and nowhere near enough on winter weather preparedness.

And if you have been a small business person, whatever you do never ever mention it at a job interview!

Then, after spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, I drive back to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and the fire marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department.
I then log onto the Internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on WUWT, Freerepublic and Fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine and environment is just BAD, BAD, BAD because the government just can’t do anything right.

We just had another visit from one of the kids we worked with years ago who moved away (~700 miles). She is now 18 and in college! Boy does time fly.
We do children’s entertainment as a small business and have neighbor kids who come to our farm. We also tutor math and science.

Janice, I HAVE kids, they go BAAAaaa, This year I have 3 blue eyed silvers and an almost black with blue eyes (Spooky looking little fellow)
Of course children love to see the little guys and my lambs.
Oh, Gail, lol. Neato! We had a tan kid named “Billy.” So, I know exactly what that sounds like. My dad’s sister gave him to us for a pet. She was a neat aunt (her brother wasn’t so pleased…). He was sooo, cute. Then, he grew up. THAT was an adventure. One time, we tethered him in the side yard a leeetle bit too close to the house. I woke up to hear him EATING THE SIDING!! Then, there was the time…. and, oh, yeah, that other time he… and …. — on and on as you very well know!
