Excerpts on climate from the SOTU – comments welcome

I made it back to a computer in time today to get a copy of the State of the Union address, here are the relevant passages about climate:

==========================================

“Now, one of the biggest factors in bringing more jobs back is our commitment to American energy.  The all-of-the-above energy strategy I announced a few years ago is working, and today, America is closer to energy independence than we’ve been in decades.

One of the reasons why is natural gas – if extracted safely, it’s the bridge fuel that can power our economy with less of the carbon pollution that causes climate change.  Businesses plan to invest almost $100 billion in new factories that use natural gas.  I’ll cut red tape to help states get those factories built, and this Congress can help by putting people to work building fueling stations that shift more cars and trucks from foreign oil to American natural gas.  My administration will keep working with the industry to sustain production and job growth while strengthening protection of our air, our water, and our communities.  And while we’re at it, I’ll use my authority to protect more of our pristine federal lands for future generations.

It’s not just oil and natural gas production that’s booming; we’re becoming a global leader in solar, too.  Every four minutes, another American home or business goes solar; every panel pounded into place by a worker whose job can’t be outsourced.  Let’s continue that progress with a smarter tax policy that stops giving $4 billion a year to fossil fuel industries that don’t need it, so that we can invest more in fuels of the future that do.

And even as we’ve increased energy production, we’ve partnered with businesses, builders, and local communities to reduce the energy we consume.  When we rescued our automakers, for example, we worked with them to set higher fuel efficiency standards for our cars.  In the coming months, I’ll build on that success by setting new standards for our trucks, so we can keep driving down oil imports and what we pay at the pump.

Taken together, our energy policy is creating jobs and leading to a cleaner, safer planet.  Over the past eight years, the United States has reduced our total carbon pollution more than any other nation on Earth.  But we have to act with more urgency – because a changing climate is already harming western communities struggling with drought, and coastal cities dealing with floods.  That’s why I directed my administration to work with states, utilities, and others to set new standards on the amount of carbon pollution our power plants are allowed to dump into the air.  The shift to a cleaner energy economy won’t happen overnight, and it will require tough choices along the way.  But the debate is settled.  Climate change is a fact.  And when our children’s children look us in the eye and ask if we did all we could to leave them a safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy, I want us to be able to say yes, we did.”

Heard that ‘future generations’ stuff all my life. Maybe this current crop, this millenial generation, being hit full in the face by 50 years of old-hipster neo-socialist economic self-destruction, will be that future generation that will need to tap in to every resource we have left to get themselves and this country back on its feet.

Climate change is a fact, but man has NOTHING to do with it.
Let’s not forget that der Fuehrer’s meme isn’t about climate, or CO2, or man’s activities and their effect on climate – it is his pretext for regulating and taxing everything to death. It is his justification for asserting dictatorial power to achieve his Marxist agenda, take the fruits of our labor, put an end to liberty, and destroy the middle class – the bourgeois class enemy.
He repeats all the usual superstitions about “carbon pollution” and “renewable” energy.
He glosses over the 1,500,000 jobs that will be lost because of his war on coal (i.e., his reinstitution of the Salem witch trials of 1693), and the additional 800,000 jobs to be lost because of his denial of the Keystone pipeline – all of which will have exactly ZERO effect on climate.
The reptiles, mendacity knows no bounds.

January 28, 2014 6:47 pm

” Climate change is a fact. And when our children’s children look us in the eye…”
…they’ll wonder why a guy with a carbon footprint estimated at 41,000 tons, who sends his family and dogs off on separate flights for vacations in far off ritzy spots, who takes crosscountry flights to give 30 minute speeches, who keeps the White House at a toasty 77F, and who goes to the golf course every couple of weeks in a 17 vehicle motorcade has the cajones to lecture anyone.

Climate change is a fact. But the causes of that change are speculative and more often political.

Notice he is taking credit for the increase of natural gas production and the decrease of CO2 emissions, neither of which he should rightly get credit for except for the slowing of economic activity. He gets that the laborer that installs a solar panel is a non-outsourced worker but says nothing about the high cost of subsides (in the true meaning of the term). Then mentions the $4 B to fossil fuel industries that is not a subsidy, but rather investment incentives via tax breaks.** The higher fuel standard (54.5 mpg) is unlikely to be met unless they somehow cheat, say by burning coal to make electricity to power vehicles either full or part time. Look for exemptions or some sort of new-speak to be used.
___
**Here is what they do. Gov. says we want $100 of your money. However, if you spend money in a way that we approve, we will only take $80. We will be pleased to tell the citizens that we are giving you a $20 subsidy and threaten you because you agree with this scam.

As Mr Sorenson said above, this is far more ‘sensible’ than I expected from a guy who no doubt shares bunk-beds with the Al Gore. I truly am amazed by his restraint. I know he must have wanted to die in having to switch from saying “Global warming is a fact” to what he said instead. Someone who helps in the executive branch knows the winds are shifting (yes, a pun of sorts) and it’s time to maybe pull it back a bit.
Now, that is the optimistic side of me, a half which rarely makes an appearance. I still can’t stand government, left or right, and I am anything but a supporter of this administration, but I really think this is a big loss for the whinging lefties tonight. Considering the asinine build-up of pro-warmist articles as of late, I was not expecting such reserve on his part.
And William Teach gets my vote for comment-of-the-day. 🙂

Despite representing nearly all official scientific bodies in blasé fashion by giving mere lip service to the climate modeled emergency, he acted as a good leader by educating low information voters that fracking should be encouraged by government instead of thwarted. Bingo! This is what winning looks like, gentlemen.

January 28, 2014 7:12 pm

Big, unstated contradictions –
+ All that excess natural gas that has created glut prices comes from fracking, and self declared environmental wonks say the net is no impact on CO2: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/10/21/the-shale-gas-boom-wont-do-much-for-climate-change-but-it-will-make-us-a-bit-richer/
They maintain that cheap natgas will crowd out cleaner tech and will also encourage more consumption, so while coal to natgas cuts CO2 per BTU by half, it cuts $/BTU by more.
+ Fracking is an area that Obama has already used Executive Orders to regulate: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/04/13/executive-order-supporting-safe-and-responsible-development-unconvention
There is a lot of pressure on Obama from liberals to come down hard on fracking: https://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/02/16-0

January 28, 2014 7:27 pm

BTW – what event constitutes the sea level rise that Obama inferred in the SOTU?
I thought the sea level rise had decelerated, as mentioned here: http://www.columbia.edu/~mhs119/SeaLevel/
“… sea level rise slowed slightly in the past few years. The reason seems to be that ocean heat storage decreased in the past five years reducing thermal expansion. Reduced heat storage may be related in part to solar minimum radiation. Ocean heat uptake will surely resume, so acceleration of sea level rise in the next few years may occur. We will discuss the interconnections of climate forcings, global temperature, ocean heat storage, ice melt, and sea level in a paper now in preparation.”

It’s too early to tell yet but Tony Abbott and his chief advisor are making the right noises here about CC, CO2 and renewable energy. There is change coming and that is a fact. As for Barry O he will have to stick to the script albeit watered down somewhat until the next election but his replacement, whoever that will be, should have clean air to rebut the fraud. The Democrats will die on the cross of windmills just as the ALP/Greens here will perish in the carbon tax.

Why else would a lame duck bother saying:

{emphasis mine}
It’s all about the congressional seats up for election in November, 2014. Barack’s people (whether Democrats or RINOS (Republicans in Name Only)) are heading for a major defeat. Having run the U. S. economy into the ditch with, inter alia, their tripling the budget deficit, their Fed. and state fuel taxes, their unwanted, unneeded, abysmally failing “Obamacare,” and their Envirostalinism, junk science regulations, the average American voter has had it UP TO HERE. Here’s the true gist — ” Every four minutes, another American home or business goes solar; every panel pounded into place by a worker whose job can’t be outsourced. ”
Of course that job of pounding a panel into place cant’t be outsoursed outside the US — but the ignorant, gullible illegal alien who does the job manages to do two very good things from the point of view of oBumbler:
1) displaces an American worker who goes on unemployment and food stamps and ultimately becomes creates more dependency on gov’t handouts
2) hires another illegal who eventually follows the American Citizen down the path to dependency [as above] and creates the opportunity for yet another illegal worker to enter the country
Since these solar panel installation projects are just like roofing projects — they are one day and done — and so no-one can find-out about the worker’s status — around New England most roofing projects are manned by illegal Brazilians
Feeding the oBumbler dependency economy and associated corrupt voting system
In contrast Oil / Gas drilling is an All-American — anti -oBumbler solution:
A) creates opportunities for Americans to get into good paying jobs in a rapidly expanding industry
B) creates additional opportunities for small business to develop, manufacture and install technology at all levels
C) creates a pool of independent-minded working voters who will eshue anything oBumbler

The Obama Administration has done plenty to attempt to slow domestic energy production:
http://anotherslownewsday.wordpress.com/about/politics/american-energy-2/barack-obamas-energy-policies/
Personally I get a chuckle from all this – POTUS really is in a spot – if he keeps up the anti-humanity, faked-up “environmental” rhetoric, which of course he has to if just to keep the loyal leftists in line behind him, he risks the Great American Energy Train leaving the station without him; and after all, he wants to take credit for the renaissance in American energy that is fracking. You know he does. It has gotten too big to ignore, and things are moving fast. He needs to reposition without alienating the mindless robots that are his supporters and electoral base. So he says some faked-up crap; just like he always does. He’s just a PR man.
Man-Made Global Warming is so last century. We care on this blog a lot more about it than the public – look at the public polls. No one gives a hoot. They talk about warming, and everyone sees winter is doing just fine. They talk about flooding, and seaports around the world remain a top real-estate investment – Al Gore buys beachfront property. “…a smarter tax policy that stops giving $4 billion a year to fossil fuel industries that don’t need it…” I’m looking forward to seeing how he does this.
Unfortunately I lost the link when I upgraded computers, but of that “4 billion”, just over a billion goes to the national oil and gas reserves. Chop that and lose the election!
A little under 1 billion goes to agricultural subsidies. Chop that and lose the election!
A little under a billion goes for home heating subsidies so that all those people in the NE who can’t afford heating oil won’t be able to afford any at all. Chop that!
I can’t remember where the remaining “subsidy” is allocated, but it’s all just padding and pandering to his voting base.

Perhaps we’d be there already Solyndra didn’t go bankrupt.
While pounding in those fragile panels might not be outsourced, the labor needed is greatly reduced by advancing technology. And that trend is certain to increase because of costs mandated by some of his other programs.

America is closer to energy independence than we’ve been in decades.

That last sentence is what Obama should have said five years ago, instead of betting on breakthroughs in Electrically Powered Vehicles and their batteries. The advisor who plumped for EPVs (Chu?) is gone, after numerous embarrassing bankruptcies in the subsidized start-ups. If he’d given ear to a few skeptics, he wouldn’t have squandered those years and that time on a dead end–or at least the money would have gone into research only, not manufacturing.

Wow: “Every four minutes, another American home or business goes solar”. That’s 15 per hour, 360 per day, so 131,500 per year. With, say, 132 million houses in the USA and 176,000 already completed installations (2011 US Housing Survey) at the current rate it will take about 1,000 years for the entire housing stock to be fitted. I’m rather surprised that this is something to be proud of, for a nation with such a “can-do” ethos …

It looks to me like Obama is doing a bit of jui-jitsu with the environmentalists. What he really seems to want to promote is fracking, which the environmentalists are of course opposed to. So he’s justifying it by sounding like a full-bore zealot on climate change, nullifying any opposition from that quarter. He’s saying we have to go big on fracking in order to save the west coast from droughts and the east coast from storms and floods. All BS, of course, but smart politics. Notice that he’s not calling for carbon taxes or cap and trade or any sort of UN taxation transfers to other nations. Who knows what he really believes, but though he’s seeming to give some rhetorical support to the climate change believer crowd, he’s not actually doing anything they want, and in fact doing things that the environmentalists oppose – fracking. Not so dumb, really.

How many “debates” were there? I remember several being set up (incl, James Cameron), but the Warmist didn’t show up. I’m sure Al Gore was invited to debate by many scientists, but, again, he knew he couldn’t win, and refused. There are probably dozens of other phony debates. The only ones i know of ended in a loss by the warmist side.
But of course, when the Bamma says the debate is over, he means he’s going to ignore the science, ignore the weather, ignore the data, ignore the failed models, ignore American opinion, and do exactly what he wants, without recourse. God save us from this creature.

Bob,
Our Dear Leader proposed business tax changes to encourage company operations here and discourage off-shoring operations to overseas locations.
Both Democrats and Republicans have argued that our tax code is riddled with wasteful, complicated loopholes that punish businesses investing here, and reward companies that keep profits abroad. Let’s flip that equation. Let’s work together to close those loopholes, end those incentives to ship jobs overseas, and lower tax rates for businesses that create jobs here at home. Moreover, we can take the money we save with this transition to tax reform to create jobs rebuilding our roads, upgrading our ports, unclogging our commutes – because in today’s global economy, first-class jobs gravitate to first-class infrastructure.
Haven’t we heard these empty promises before? It seems to me we should be funding Our Dear Leaders laundry list of transportation projects with all of the money we are saving with ObamaCare. The average family of 4 will see savings of $2,500.00 That should work, right? ‘Cause OKare is going to save us LOTS of money, right?!

Did you notice that Obama did not mention science in connection with climate. Instead he talks of a debate being settled. They might have finally realized that all talk of consensus science was anti-scientific and that scientific observations do not support their claims of facts.

January 28, 2014 10:08 pm

What, if anything, does Obama mean when he says that “carbon pollution” causes “climate change”? Doesn’t he realize that scientific research has not proved there to be a cause and effect relationship between CO2 concentrations and global temperatures? Doesn’t he grasp that our climate changes with or without man-made emissions of CO2? Doesn’t Obama realize that putting unemployed people into low productivity jobs such as installing solar panels is the road to economic ruin for the people of the U.S. rather than the opposite? Why does Obama wish to increase our supply of labor by opening our borders to cheaper foreign labor in a period of high unemployment? Does Obama have a clue to logic or to elementary economics? Can’t we attract better people into public office than Obama?

Most important to understand that the pulses in the winter over the polar circle running from the stratosphere to the troposphere, and not vice versa.
In winter, the temperature gradient at the edges of the vortex increases with altitude in the stratosphere from level 150 hPa, and the maximum is observed at the level of 50-10 hPa (20-30
km), so the vortex is most evident at the level of 50-30 hPa, where there is the lowest temperature and the highest gradients.

In the developed world, we need less government, not more, and we need much more common sense than is displayed by our current global leadership. Obama and most of the leaders of Western Europe have failed badly. The average world leader today is lacking adequate education to function effectively in this complex modern technological world, and is easily misled by the latest fads and foolishness. So all these new solar panels getting POUNDED into place by people whose jobs can’t be outsourced.
Ever watched solar panels being pounded into place, and wondered just what the workers were doing. Not easy to find out, because the language on the roofs, isn’t English.
Construction jobs were outsourced a long time ago.
So natural gas is just a bridge fuel. From what, to what ??
The Government gives $4B per year to fossil fuel industries ?? Howcome ?? The US government, is the biggest beneficiary of fossil fuel industries; and they don’t get a dime from the government.
So what are these “fuels of the future” that need taxpayer money ?? Maybe Obama is going to plant more fig trees, to get figs for fuel, just like we had, before we got down on the ground, and discovered fire. Oh I see they are going to use AUAVs to pick the figs, so we don’t have to climb the trees again.

I cannot add more because most of the comments were great, but the one one sentence that Obama said ( and to many it may not mean much), is when he used the word “pound” to describe a contractor placing a solar panel, my hair actually stood on end (i think somebody else mentioned it) it somewhat reminds me of Khrushchev using his “shoe” at the UN. Somehow for a moment moment Obama lost his composure (community organizer popped up?). And although most of the time he followed script thus fooling most if not all of you he made a few more bizarre statements. Do not laugh, please , this guy (and the group behind him). Do not ridicule him (them). There was also not much of a “balloon type , happy days are here again” departure after the speech less than 2 minutes btw.

“we’re becoming a global leader in solar, too.”
Perhaps we’d be there already Solyndra didn’t go bankrupt……”””””
Well Solyndra didn’t GO bankrupt .
They were insolvent before they even opened their doors.
You have to be really dumb to build a PV solar cell, that is cylindrical, and built out of hygroscopic material. A cylinder has three times the area of a flat strip as wide as its diameter (well pi times).
So glass making is a very energy intensive process, and you need three times as much. Well I see I forgot the hygroscopy; that cylinder has to be hermetically sealed inside a bigger glass cylinder; so it’s 6 times as much glass (ok already; 2pi times !).
And being a cylinder, they are as thick as they are wide, so when the sun is not overhead, they cast a big shadow, so you can’t butt them up against each other like flat cells. So they require at least three times as much roof area as flat cells (make that pi also for commonality).
Did I mention they cast a shadow; well they even shadow themselves. The sun shines on the curved surface somewhat like a flat one, but then the sides of the cylinder are edgewise on to the sun, so they don’t get uniformly illuminated.
Guess what happens when you parallel up two solar cells, and put more light on one than the other; well the same thing happens if you put less light on one cell than the other.
The cell with the lower light on it, generates a lower forward Voltage, than the cell with the brighter light, so instead of putting out a current onto the power buss, it partially shorts the higher Voltage cell (current hogging), so it wastes some of the current from the high Voltage cell.
Because cylinders are cylindrical, and the sun moves around them, so the illuminated part changes continually; the whole surface has to be a single cell; can’t be multiple cells, so they current hog themselves.
Anyone making or installing solar panels, knows that cells in parallel, all have to be equally illuminated. So a shadow from a tree is intolerable, and will lead to current hogging losses.
The Solyndra solar panel (tube) was an engineering scandal, long before it became a financial scandal, or a political scandal.

I’ll tell you what’s settled. It’s a settled fact that climastrologists can’t read thermometers. If they do read them, and they don’t like the reading, it is either deleted from record-gathering or ‘adjusted’. Guess which way?
In the 1970s there were >6000 weather stations which provided data to compile global temperature records. Now, fewer than 1100 stations are used, heavily biased to urban heat islands, lower latitudes and elevations. Joe D’Aleo gets it. Start at about 3:05 for the busy viewer. One station remains to record temperature in Canada north of 65deg North.

“we’re becoming a global leader in solar, too.”
Perhaps we’d be there already Solyndra didn’t go bankrupt….
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Yea and WHO has been buying up the bankrupt solar companies?
Warren Buffet Buys Antelope Valley Solar Projects for $2.5 Billion and do not forget it is Warren Buffet’s trains hauling oil instead of the Keystone pipeline. Maybe this is why the Wall Street Journal says Warren Buffett is President Obama’s most important ally in the Business Community
This of course is not surprising given Warren Buffett’s wealth soared $37 million a day in 2013 He gained more wealth than any other U.S. billionaire. (Warren Buffett was ranked as the world’s wealthiest person in 2008 and as the third wealthiest person in 2011.)
Now what was that the Occupy Wall Street Crowd was saying about the 1% and income inequality?
President Obama on inequality (transcript)

…The top 10 percent no longer takes in one-third of our income — it now takes half. Whereas in the past, the average CEO made about 20 to 30 times the income of the average worker, today’s CEO now makes 273 times more. And meanwhile, a family in the top 1 percent has a net worth 288 times higher than the typical family, which is a record for this country.
…But this increasing inequality is most pronounced in our country, and it challenges the very essence of who we are as a people. Understand we’ve never begrudged success in America. We aspire to it. We admire folks who start new businesses, create jobs, and invent the products that enrich our lives. And we expect them to be rewarded handsomely for it. In fact, we’ve often accepted more income inequality than many other nations for one big reason — because we were convinced that America is a place where even if you’re born with nothing, with a little hard work you can improve your own situation over time and build something better to leave your kids….
The problem is that alongside increased inequality, we’ve seen diminished levels of upward mobility in recent years….

And what is that OH WISE ONE?
Because the G@&^ D%$# red tape strangles any hope an average American has of starting his own business, that is IF he has enough wealth left to try and start one after the government strips him of 80% of he earnings via all the different taxes he pays! E.M. Smith gives a great explanation of why large corporations love government regulation.
Note how corporate tariffs and taxes decrease while pay roll taxes skyrocket WIKI chart here is another chart tax dollars as share of federal revenues (Note the first chart by WIKI hides the decrease in corporate and increase in personal tax) and do not forget INFLATION, THE HIDDEN TAX Both Lenin and Sen. Daniel Webster warned against fiat currency and inflation, Who’d a thunk?
Americans are not as dumb as the president. 62% Favor Smaller Government With Fewer Services, Lower Taxes Of course in2009 49.5% of Americans did not pay income taxes so one can understand why those people might want more services and more taxes.
Unfrotunately people are not paying heed to Sen Webster’s warning:
“I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe . . . Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant; give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy.” ~ Daniel Webster
One would think the words of this great American statesman would be taught in American schools. But then you would also think the true lessons from the First Thanksgiving: that communism does not work and private property, individual liberty and industry does, would be taught in our schools too.

Notice he is taking credit for the increase of natural gas production and the decrease of CO2 emissions, neither of which he should rightly get credit for except for the slowing of economic activity.

The problem with switching from coal to natural gas to reduce CO2 emissions is that it is a one time savings. Once you take credit for this type of CO2 reduction, the only next step (other than nuclear) is to actually reduce energy use. I’ll wager it is impossible for a rich country to significantly reduce its energy use and grow its economy or improve living standards beyond the current incremental improvements enjoyed through technological advance. Whatever will happen to future global temperatures we are “locked in” to future CO2 emission increases. As evidence I offer the economies of China, India and the USA.

It is really strange that he should make those flawed comments as it is well known and documented in the scientific community with many peer reviewed papers that the drought is primarily due to the positive AMO and the negative PDO pattern like the period of 1945-1950’s and again 1905-1915 and a blocking. high which diverts the rains to the north. It is even stranger to pick this region to comment on during an evening when 90% of the country is in the coldest deep freeze since the late 1970’s and the winters have been getting colder in every state including CALIFORNIA for 15 years now . The parallels with FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) are astounding, IOW, we have been down this road before. A good read for those who are curious about the FDR era (The Great Depression) is http://www.mackinac.org/archives/1998/sp1998-01.pdf (pdf form).
The following excerpt is from the section titled: “Nothing to fear but fear itself” and the entire work can also be found in HTML form here.
– – – – – – – – – –
“Nothing to fear but fear itself
By Lawrence W. Reed, published on Jan. 1, 1998
Roosevelt did indeed make a difference, though probably not the sort of difference for which the country had hoped. He started off on the wrong foot when, in his inaugural address, he blamed the Depression on “unscrupulous money changers.”
He said nothing about the role of the Fed’s mismanagement [of the money supply – QE1, 2, 3 etc anyone?] and little about the follies of Congress that had contributed to the problem [punishing tariffs]. As a result of his efforts, the economy would linger in depression for the rest of the decade. Adapting a phrase from 19th century writer Henry David Thoreau, Roosevelt famously declared in his address that, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” But as Dr. Hans Sennholz of Grove City College explains, it was FDR’s policies to come that Americans had genuine reason to fear:

In his first 100 days, he swung hard at the profit order. Instead of clearing away the prosperity barriers erected by his predecessor, he built new ones of his own. He struck in every known way at the integrity of the U.S. dollar through quantitative increases and qualitative deterioration. He seized the people’s gold holdings and subsequently devalued the dollar by 40 percent.

Frustrated and angered that Roosevelt had so quickly and thoroughly abandoned the platform on which he was elected, Director of the Bureau of the Budget Lewis W. Douglas resigned after only one year on the job. At Harvard University in May 1935, Douglas made it plain that America was facing a momentous choice:

Will we choose to subject ourselves — this great country — to the despotism of bureaucracy, controlling our every act, destroying what equality we have attained, reducing us eventually to the condition of impoverished slaves of the state?
Or will we cling to the liberties for which man has struggled for more than a thousand years? It is important to understand the magnitude of the issue before us. … If we do not elect to have a tyrannical, oppressive bureaucracy controlling our lives, destroying progress, depressing the standard of living … then should it not be the function of the Federal government under a democracy to limit its activities to those which a democracy may adequately deal, such for example as national defense, maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, preventing dishonesty, and … guarding the public against … vested special interests?

Alarmists have taken to depicting the current controversy as “those who accept that global warming is occurring versus those that deny it.”
The controversy is far more nuanced than that. The real question is not whether CO2 is a green house gas (it is), or whether there has been warming over the last 50 years (sure seems to be, although there is room to question the amouint). The biggest question is over how sensitive the climate is to CO2 forcing. The computer models assume a high sensitivity while the evidence seems to show a much lower sensitivity.
That Obama would so grossly ignore the real controversy in such an important topic is not worthy of a president.

Heck one state told me I had to have my horse manure inspected before giving it to a neighbor for her garden! One by one the simple easy businesses have become “regulated” Until now we have Police Bust Lemonade Stands Nationwide.

I have solar panels on my house, which cut my (nominal) electric bill by half. However, since I paid only 30 percent of the actual cost of my panels for them, and the other 70 percent came from taxpayer subsidies – and my other electric rates (PG&E territory, California) are at least double what they would be without “renewable energy” mandates – I’m not really saving any money by my solar panels, because I’m paying way more than the difference – the savings on my PG&E bill – in taxes for the panels.
If there were no renewables mandates and other artificial costs to jack up electric rates it would never make sense to have solar panels on your house.
It would seem that the whole rationale for “renewable energy” (except hydroelectric, which the envirolunatics don’t count as renewable) reflects some serious economic illiteracy.
If Obama were really committed to education (as opposed to Common Core-type leftist propaganda indoctrination), he’d see to it that economics and business management were taught starting in the first grade (something I’ve been advocating for a long time).
Economic illiteracy is a major element in global warming alarmism and “green” initiatives generally.
Finally, one wonders how this self-proclaimed champion of the poor can rationalize sticking it to the poor with high energy costs, which affect not only their electric, home heating and gasoline bills but the cost of all their necessaries that move by electricity or motor fuel. Oh, but in his Mobius strip-shaped path of logical thinking, he’ll find a way. (After all, it’s saving the planet for their grandchildren! Oh, but me grandma here, today, right now, trying to raise my three grandkids on a low income in a bad neighborhood – how will those higher energy prices help me both feed the grandkids and heat the house? Right now looks like I’ll have to choose between the two? My grandchildren are already here, today, now, bro, and the world ain’t bein’ saved for them!)

Are you even remotely familiar with young Bill Gates early years in his business pursuits? The second question would be: Do you understand the environment he was involved with when he wrote the simulators that executed on the various mainframes (computers) and minis he was using to develop his software on before having access to the actual micros (like the Altair 8800) his S/W would run on at the time? I have no idea. It is certainly weather. But most importantly it is weather for which Atlanta, metro area residents, and the state of Georgia were effectively unprepared.
I have no idea what this mess is going to end up costing, but it will be a bundle.
Way too much time & money spent on “climate change” and nowhere near enough on winter weather preparedness.

2) Justin Bieber, sorry, I mean Justin Trudeau, the lucky sperm from Pierre Trudeau’s loins, whose sole qualifications for the job of leader is good hair and good speechifyin’. Remind you of anyone?

John Kerry? (AKA “The Poodle”). He not only has good hair; he has a knack for marrying rich women, so perhaps he has other qualifications I’m not aware of.

Agreed. We could criticize AlGore’s crazy ideas without being accused of racism. But any disapproval of the Annointed One is treated as a hate crime.

It is known as mindset.
Have you ever dealt with inner city kids? They are locked in third generation welfare because they can not imagine anything different. Gates was not locked in. His Dad was part owner of a business.
I have had kids from poverty stricken homes I interacted with come back as adults and thank me for making them realize they were not locked into poverty.
Obama and his buddies WANT to lock those people into poverty and they are doing it any way they can.
My husband was corresponding with someone yesterday. He has youngsters working for him part time. He said they start out gung ho at 14 years but by the time they were 18 they had no desire to work at all.
I saw the same thing in the fresh out of school new-hires I had the misfortune to supervise. Come in late, take long lunches and breaks, leave early and if you actually ASK them to do the work they were hired to do they go screaming to personnel. Then as supervisor it is your ‘fault’ because you did not instill ‘Team Spirit’
In the USA we have the government job, welfare mother, that pays better than minimum wage. we have complicated tax law, insurance and regulations raising the bar on small entrepreneurs. A small business owner can not even get a home mortgage without someone in the family with a ‘Regular Job’ co-signing the loan. And if you have been a small business person, whatever you do never ever mention it at a job interview!

Good old American capitalism found and produced all of this natural gas without any help or guidance from the Obama administration, perhaps not having an energy policy for almost a decade is the answer.

When our children’s children look us in the eye – they most likely will say “Grandpa, can I have another cookie.”

Not if current trends in family disintegration continue. More likely they will say something like “Yo! Momma-Daddy: fork over all those cookies if’n you don’t want that bitch from Child Welfare Services all over you ass again”

It is sad to see the United States being headed by such a complete moron. He seems to be unable to do any critical thinking on important matters.

Anyone, including BHO who uses the term “carbon pollution” immediately removes all doubt that he is a scientific nincompoop. I have a number of benchmarks that I use to decide if a person’s opinion is worth listening to on any subject. One of the most important is that if they still believe in any form of AGW I know for sure that they are too stupid and gullible to have a valid opinion on anything. That includes BHO of course.

So tax breaks for fossil fuel producers is evil. And inequality is evil. But somehow tax breaks for buying $100k Tesla’s and $30-70k solar installations isn’t evil. Riiiiight.

Just as bad at the Woodford Folk Festival – biggest folk festival in the Southern Hemisphere, and includes a big speakers program on climate change, environment, politics and such like lefty touchy-feely stuff. I think my views on such things are fairly middle of the road, though leaning somewhat to the conservative side. When I’m at Woodford, I feel like I’m somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan. Good thing I only go for the music.

Ah, Phil Jourdan (at 12:49pm), that was gallant of you to remember that there are a few women in the WUWT “gentlemen” ‘s club. Merci!
btw: While I would LOVE to hear “Grandma!” called out to me by a child (I AM a little young, though, heh, heh — not literally, but, it seems like it to me) someday…. Sigh. It’s not looking too hopeful…. AAAAACK! What — am — I — saying?!! I will choose to live not in foolish, pseudo-wise, despair, but rather, in hope — yes! With God, ALL things are possible. @Janice Moore – indeed! I have 4 grands, 2 biological, and 2 by adoption (my wife and I adopted their mother, and then she had children). But they are all my grand kids! (especially spelled GRAND Kids).

One of the more pretentious political self-descriptions is “Libertarian.” People think it puts them above the fray. It sounds fashionable, and to the uninitiated, faintly dangerous. Actually, it’s just one more bullshit political philosophy.
– George Carlin –
This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility.
After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
I drove to work without getting flattened by an eighteen wheeler with no brakes thanks to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Nor was I smashed by a driver asleep at the wheel thanks to Dept of Transportation.
Then, after spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, I drive back to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and the fire marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department.
I then log onto the Internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on WUWT, Freerepublic and Fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine and environment is just BAD, BAD, BAD because the government just can’t do anything right.

Yes, and no. It’s like drinking at a party. A couple of mixers and a light buzz relaxes you and makes you glib and pleasant. Several of them makes you an obnoxious bore.
I.e., more of a good thing is not generally better. We are well past the point of diminishing returns, and the heavy drinkers have become a bunch of insufferable, know-it-all, clueless jerks.

Yes, he says what he says, and you can say that because it was so little, “we are winning.” Then recall that this man doesn’t care what congress says or does because he will do by executive order what he wants until at least the January after the mid term elections since Hary Reid and friends will shield him from impreachment.
Also recall that the Constitution does not allow “executive orders” being law, and only the inactivity of the Congress allows them to have that semblance. Law can only be created by Congress, yet by doing nothing and allowing “EOs” to stand, do they appear to be law. The only way the President can act like a dictator is by first the Supreme court shirking the duties which it was intended – and it has – then Congress becoming the puppets of the puppet masters. Then the President can do what he wants – provided, of course, that is what the puppet masters want.

We just had another visit from one of the kids we worked with years ago who moved away (~700 miles). She is now 18 and in college! Boy does time fly.
We do children’s entertainment as a small business and have neighbor kids who come to our farm. We also tutor math and science.

@ Gail — Yes, I know you enjoy kids a lot (or you wouldn’t do all you do with the horses etc… with them). I’m glad to hear that you get the occasional visit. You have, no doubt, as Phil and his wife have, children and grandchildren of your heart.

Oh, Gail, lol. Neato! We had a tan kid named “Billy.” So, I know exactly what that sounds like. My dad’s sister gave him to us for a pet. She was a neat aunt (her brother wasn’t so pleased…). He was sooo, cute. Then, he grew up. THAT was an adventure. One time, we tethered him in the side yard a leeetle bit too close to the house. I woke up to hear him EATING THE SIDING!! Then, there was the time…. and, oh, yeah, that other time he… and …. — on and on as you very well know!
