While I knew I was gaining on Grist, this was a surprise to me when I checked it today, so I thought I would share. The graph below shows many of the blogs and websites on climate. The Discover Magazine metric also includes traffic for blogs.discovermagazine.com where angry people like the “Bad Astronomer” blogged about climate.
All data/screencaps is from from my Alexa.com account. For traffic, lower numbers are better, for example, Google Traffic rank is #1.

The bounce rate is telling. For those of you who don’t know what that means see the definition here
People ask me how I do this. Some assume I must be funded by some massive “big oil” campaign or some “dark money”, but to be honest, it is just me and a few contributors that put up stories a few times a day, plus some Google adwords revenue, of which wordpress.com takes about half, since they host the site, provide the bandwidth, and manage the advertising. I have no control over it.

The bounce rate table is very pleasing to see. Largely because I enjoy seeing SkS suffering such rejection.
But I wonder how volatile these figures are. Is this really the sign of SkS going the way of RealClimate?

After looking at the definition, does bounce rate adjust for RSS readers that send you directly to articles? I always just close the current article and then click on the next link in Feedly, so I never navigate within WUWT. The time-on-site seems a better indicator (and is also favorable). Thanks for the great work!

This seems to indicate that Googles panda is giving low values for WUWT, despite the high original -not copied- content and it means that the visitors of WUWT know what they are doing, while for other sites many if not most visitors just make a random visit.
If Panda did not downplay WUWT with 50% search engine hits WUWT could easily be in the top 5000.

Well deserved. Your blog is not only filled with science and gentle humor but the comment section does not degenerate into childish Romper Room “debate”. I like that the comments are often as fact-filled and interesting as the posts. Yours and the moderators work is appreciated.
Phil Plait’s rants about “climate deniers” used to bother me, but now I just laugh at how clueless this intelligent man is. It’s ironic how his blog started out to debunk all the scaremongering peripheral to astronomy, but he’s oblivious to the same behavior concerning the climate. His post today is a doozy of disinformation and invective. Any self-proclaimed skeptic such as he ought to begin by examining his own prejudices. But no, it’s too easy to parrot the party line. No doubt WUWT’s surpassing DM will get the fanboys over there agitated, so expect to see a temporary spike. I expect it will just be a passing “El Nino” event, though.
Btw, Plait’s crowing today is a claim that the “denialist” are wrong because they don’t publish in the journals. Notwithstanding the fact that those who aren’t sciactivists do publish, Phil seems ignorant of the declaration by some of his heroes that “we’ll keep them out of the journals even if we have to redefine peer-review.” Pity the man. There are none so blind as will not see.

According to their latest annual report 50% of the funding comes from grants and 21% from major donor.
Wendy Schmidt is on their board of directors and Schmidt Family Foundation has given grant money to Grist and donations through the affiliated 11th Hour Project.
The Schmidt Family Foundation was established by Google founder Eric Schmidt (Wendy’s husband) using the proceeds from the IPO when Google went public. As of December 31, 2011, the Foundation’s assets were valued at $178 million, which included $30.7 million in Google Class A stock.
So it likes they are funded (at least in part) by Big Google. I wonder if this, in anyway, affects Google search results for climate related words.

REPLY: yes, you’d think that, but wordpress.com recently pulled the rug out from under thousands of bloggers by yanking important and useful features without notice. My experiment with their invitation to join “Enterprise” level hosting failed miserably, since most of the plugins they offered were useless and/or buggy, documentation sketchy, and prices for the service too high to make it worth my while. I gave up on it. Overall though wordpress.com is a good value – Anthony.
@leon Interesting that they took out the science and technology category this year. Some whiners apparently made life difficult for the founder last year, due to WUWT’s popularity, the usual “denier” arguments were thrown at him. I guess he just doesn’t want to be hassled this year.

You left out a few things. Quality. Honesty. Integrity. Openness. By “openness” I mean that the “snip” is used sparingly and, as far as I can tell from this end, never to censor content. Sometimes to keep comments to a post on track. Sometimes to keep things within the site policy’s sometimes fuzzy line. Sometimes because the “taste” of a comment appears so bad that the “ModSquad” can’t stomach it. But never for on-track content in order to silence an opposing view.
Sometimes a commenter is given a “time out”. Sometimes they’ve been “banned”. But only when they’ve been habitual offenders of the above.
Whether or not you and your “team” get high numbers, Thanks for what you do.

For me this is the simplest way to tell if someone is telling the truth. If you are telling the truth you have nothing to hide, unlike sites like RealClimate, HuffPo and SKS, which censor, block, delete and modify user posts.
Unfortunately none of the Carbon Crisis Creationists are interested in an open debate. Gavin Schmidt (in the previously posted video clip) is a perfect example. Open debate is like sunlight to a vampire for them.

Warmists think that success has to be well funded. They assume WUWT HAS TO BE well fossil fuel funded. What they forget is that honesty and transparency and truth are FREE!!!! Try it Warmists, it won’t work for you. 😉 Heh, heh.
All I look for is truth and common sense. Discovery has LOST that. Their documentaries used to be a beacon of knowledge. but AG (After Gore) they are nothing more than a Global Warming, Climate Change, Sustainability, or whatever the current term is these days. They have reached the height of ridiculousness with their blatant plug for global warming. The examples are legion, I am sure each reading this has seen one. I no longer watch, read or view any of their products including web pages.
I clearly recall on article that showed the effects of the acidification of the ocean, many vivid color photos of the dead, ding and bleached coral. I am certain that even an above average intelligence high school student would read the article and take away the impression that the effects of global warming are here now, and cite this article as proof. It was only after reading the article three times and then the captions under the photos that I discovered a sentence at the end of one of the photos that the pictures were taken in the Mediterranean ocean near an active volcanic vent. I guess that satisfies their “truth” requirements.
Congratulations to everyone who make this such a compelling site. I suspect it will only climb higher.
I think this remarkable result tells us that there are a lot of intelligent people out there looking for good science and lively, lightly-moderated discussion. Were I Discover, I would be studying WUWT to see how I could get back into public favor.

Having dropped all subscriptions to science magazines, I have no problem donating/ subscribing to WUWT.
A much classier format than glossy pages smothered in adds.
I’m extremely happy, (but not at all surprised) that a media outlet that provides simple, clear, and concise scientific explanations (WUWT) eventually beats out pseudo-scientific media outlets that are mere sock puppets for those with political agendas. The once exemplary journals Discover, National Geographic, Scientific American, and ‘The Journal Nature’ have degenerated into pseudo-scientific garbage spewing propaganda outlets. Unless they revert back to honest scientific reporting, their chronic, degenerative assault on logic and truth will ultimately cause their demise.

I have been reading WUWT for a few years now. I was originally steered to WUWT by some remarks by an American Greenie on ABC Oz, he was issuing a general warning to viewers NOT to go to a site called What’s Up (or something like that) because it is evil Denier propaganda. He was dumb all right.

There is another thread going on about tides which are extremely sensitive to the Earth’s motions but you can’t even begin to research tides without the fact that the Earth turns once in 24 hours and why it is that way,everything else is bluff and voodoo.

This has an incredible value to all sceptics in the world. Especially im thinking about us sceptics in western Europe, because we are up against a majority of alarmistic people including politicians and media peoble. Congratulations on your success. I used to be a GW believer until a few years ago. Then I stumbled over your site, which told me to check the evidence – HADCRUT4 and similar datasets that showed no warming in twelve years, when all the models said it should have gotten quite significantly warmer. To be a scientist is to follow the evidence wherever it leads you.
There’s a kind of personality that lusts after gloom and doom – and most of us are more likely to check the news when we know there’s something bad going on. It’s not a conscious conspiracy; rather, it is something natural selection bred into us, a useful survival trait that sometimes gets out of hand. That rustle in the grass might be the wind, or an approaching lion; which assumption is safer? I’m relieved to know that AGW is either nonexistent or greatly overstated. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations, people come here because after some time they can tell what is AGW bullocks and what has some credibility. The activists are transparent in their extremism.

I found Climate Audit a few years ago and from there I caught on with this site. I return often for a few reasons. Honest articles that are well written, commentary that advances my understanding, willingness by the community to provide the actual numbers/sources so that I can see for myself what the underlying science is actually showing us.
The strength of this site is the content. I have recommended this site to more than 40 people who have asked me for a place to find an honest analysis of the science.
Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to make this blog such a success.

Hm. I have about 30 tabs open, minimum, at any given time. Of those, at least 4 are WUWT Front Page and Sea Ice, T & Notes, and one that flips as I go through my email notices and check them out. So what effect would that all have on Alexa stats? These may be open for hours at a time, sometimes days.
Agggh. Hadn’t heard of Climatecrocks.com before, so I took a peek. Time on site, very little. It will never get another of my clicks.

This site is about SCIENCE. Nearly all the science in FACT points to skepticism, but this site will publish anything scientific on the subject.
Also quite a few on this site are lukewarmers. Lord Christopher Monckton falls into that category.
The only lukewarmers who make sense are the microwarmers, who state up front that AGW is trivial, nugatory, and negligible.
