OK, I have decided their is gold in them thar green hills and I have decided to build an E-Commerce site to promote my latest eco-invention, a “Personal Carbon Converter” I mean, why wait for my chance for a Government sponsored fat-cat salary when I can simply pitch a product that does precisely what the devoted want?
So here is how it works, your PCC will automatically absorb carbon (aka CO2) on contact with this noxious vapour, and convert it to oxygen which as far as I know is not yet considered to be an insidious “greenhouse” gas.
And, depending on the model you purchase, it can also produce a variety of eco-friendly food!
Just add water and an idiot with a valid credit card to begin to get your share of the AGW gravy (affiliate programme beginning soon).
And all you have to do to run your PCC is add water, my future is assured, I am off to the Antarctic to make my first franchisee pitch.

An entire season of real science ruined by these AGW propaganda seeking hysterics?
“Three icebreakers weren’t able to rescue this Professor of Climate Change. At least one of those icebreakers was interrupted delivering vital supplies to other scientists. Here’s what hydrologist Joe McConnell told a journalist via e-mail:
The Australian ice breaker Aurora Australis was here at Casey [Station, Antarctica] in the process of unloading the coming year’s supplies for the station, as well as a number of researchers and their science gear for this summer’s activities, when the emergency response request was issued. The Australians shut down the unloading very quickly and left within a few hours after the request arrived but only about a third of the resupply was completed and a lot of that science gear was still on board. …
The short- and long-term impacts on the Australian science program are pronounced as you can imagine and I understand it is the same for both the Chinese and French programs since their icebreakers were diverted, too. I’ll be sitting down to New Year’s Eve dinner in a few minutes with a number of Australian researchers including the director of the Australian Antarctic Division Tony Fleming – many of these guys can’t complete the research they’ve been planning for years because some or all of their science gear still is on the Aurora. It’s always a pleasure to see Josh’s work!
These environmentalist need to grow up. Even the Judge here blew my mind.
http://www.icenews.is/2014/01/01/elves-delay-iceland-road-building-project/
Elf advocates and environmentalists have joined forces in Iceland to stop a large-scale road project that was due to take place in a region where elves are believed to live.
A judge ruled that the highway project be cancelled because there is a chance elves could be living on the barren landscape it was going to take place on.
Elf advocates and environmentalists have been doing everything they can to make the Icelandic Road and Coastal Commission change its mind about the controversial road.
The road would have run from Reykjavik to the Alftanes peninsula. The landscape between the capital and the peninsula is home to an elf church, and campaigners think elves may live there.
The Friends of Lava campaign got so much support that the project has been put on hold until Iceland’s Supreme Court rules on the issue. The group claims the road-building project would have an environmental and cultural impact, including impacting the lives of the elves.

Stephen Richards, I bow to no-one in my contempt for these polar failures. I’ve mocked them here and I’ve mocked them there and I’ve mocked them on the Guardian (although strangely I can’t find the evidence now).

Off topic curiosity.
This big storm in the NE USA is suppsed to suck a huge mass of cold air from the North polar region down through Canada. Does that not mean that a (relatively) warmer air mass will be sucked into the North polar rgion behind it?
I want to watch the JAXA and see if it has an anomylous drop in the next three weeks. Incoming Russian? air wouldn’t really be warm, but maybe less cold.

I don’t understand what the objection is against mild ridicule of either the Guardian or its environmental reporters who were playing “Antarctic explorer” on the ice.
The original caption on the picture read (somewhat grandiosely) “Alok and Laurence Topham unfurl the Guardian’s Antarctica flag. Photograph: Laurence Topham for the Guardian”. I thought that the somewhat bland flag would be better replaced by Josh’ wonderful cartoon which had already appeared earlier on WUWT. It appears to me that it was a distinct improvement on the original photo. 😉

They do a good job of self-mockery, ’tis true, I saw a young “researcher” being interviewed on TV, I think it was on the Whether Channel (whether they state the truth or not , usually not).
The young lady said she would sit tight (this was before the rescue) and have some gin and tonic and “study”. True dat. I’m glad they had the staples they needed, while the Antarctic station probably just needed food or oil or what not.
I wonder what her curriculum entailed. I’m sure beer pong 101 is a 4-credit course, since it entails a lab.

What I find really offensive is, these people planned an expedition where they would be walking on the shoulders of giants. Following in the footsteps of Shackleton and Mawson, you would expect some respect and awe for what their predecessors endured. Instead, we got whinges about the lack of milkshakes and blog posts about partying. As a previous poster said, these people disgust me.

Actually there was some question in another thread about whether the Penguins had been
Photoshopped in…so the photo may be somewhat of a, er, moving target in any case…
I think it’s a stretch to call the tweeted pic serious photography when presented as pompously

It says they’re greeted by a group of Adélie Penguins, but it appears that all but one

So let’s mock the Guardian for what they have done.
This is what the Guardian reported about the ship stranding, in a story headlined Five Basic Antarctica Facts For Climate Change Sceptics.
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jan/02/antarctic-ship-stranding-delights-climate-change-sceptics?commentpage=1
(don’t bother commenting there. One of the Guardians community standards is that you have to be a full throated global warming warbler in echo chamber mode to avoid comment deletion – similar to wikipedia and/or climate progress standards)
Most of the points are along the line of teaching grandma to suck eggs.
Only one sticks out in my mind.

3. Climate change is having varying impacts
Studies have found Antarctica has lost about 100bn tonnes of continental ice a year since 1993, causing the global sea level to rise by about 0.2mm a year.
The latest climate report from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, released last year, said there was “high confidence” that the Antarctic ice sheet had been losing ice during the past two decades, mainly from the northern and western parts of the continent, near South America.
“There is high confidence that ice shelves around the Antarctic peninsula continue a long-term trend of retreat and partial collapse that began decades ago,” the report added.
But this loss, caused by warming oceans, has been countered by an increase in ice in the Ross Sea region. This is the result of a range of factors, including climate change.
“There has been an increase in snowfall in parts of the Antarctic, especially the east Antarctic where the ship is,” Press said.
“That increase in snowfall can be attributed to warmer temperatures. It’s a pretty basic principle of science that increased air humidity causes precipitation if it’s warm enough or snow if it’s cold enough. It’s very cold in the Antarctic, so it snows.”

They assert that Antarctica is melting away at the rate of 100bn tonnes of ice a year, which is unmitigated horse manure, and worse, link to the cover page of the IPCC AR5 (the whole damned thing in other words) to support this assertion.
To them their pleasure cruise being stuck fast in record sea ice on a route that 83 years ago was open ice free water is due to global warming!
See, according to them the ice is melt water run off from the continent’s interior.
Fertile ground for a good round of mocking, I think.
For instance, Camp Casey, where the wayward band is being rescued to is the home for scientists studying Law Dome. Law Dome has an extensive history, which includes the original sites (S2) being buried by 15 meters of ice between 1957 and 1996.
History of Wilkes Station, S2 Trip
Is 15 meters of ice a lot? I’m handicapped by being American. It just seems to me that if you have to sink a mine shaft to get to the front door of what was once a suface structure, maybe that’s a sign the ice hasn’t been melting.

I think I vaguely see the captain leaning over the railing up on the bridge of the Akademik Shokalskiy in the distant background. Looks like he is signaling something urgently with his arms.
The message appears to be for the stupid photo op to end (points at them and slashes his arm across throat), get your asses back on board (grabs butt and then points at ship), the ice is closing in (points at ice then makes crushing movement with his hands) . . .
Oh, wait it is a still photo . . . silly imagination
John

Janice Moore
January 3, 2014 9:03 pm

The joke is neither: 1) misleading; nor 2) unfair.
Only someone with an intellectual impairment (drunk?) could truly NOT see that the shopped photo was obviously a joke (and, after all, the original photo is still out there… eye roll). You would have to have the sense of humor of a badger to NOT think that photo was a joke. And you would have to be in a state (temporary, one hopes) of moral equivalency confusion to NOT want to mock as hard as one can those vile, narcissistic, spoiled brats who have put a captain’s and his crew’s lives in danger along with those of many others.
More to the point is:
“Some of the penguins have fallen over laughing.” (Tiny CO2 at 10:12am, today) Yes, lol!
And that is saying a LOT. Want evidence? Watch this poor little dancing penguin trying to get his friends to laugh at him. Do they look amused? No. It takes a LOT to get a penguin to fall over laughing. THUS!, the above cartoon and, moreover, those mocked by it, is super-funny.

(and, (please note that this little note is supposed to be satiric) NO, all you Johnny Dismals, this is not a misleading video: it is OBVIOUS that the little penguin’s actions were edited and, whatever you think of her otherwise, Beyoncé would not be caught within 1,000 miles of that place, so we KNOW she wasn’t there forcing that little guy to dance or else get shot in the head)
***************************************************
No, the peril of those on the sea at this moment, is NOT a laughing matter and that is why scornfully mocking those who placed them in that peril is JUST.

Brian H
January 3, 2014 11:31 pm

Heh. As for the penguins falling over, they deliberately belly-toboggan to get downslop faster, often launching into the sea off a suitable ice platform. As long as there are no orcas or leopard seals in the landing zone.
My tracking of the AA shows it headed east at about 15 knots in a long (several hundred-mile?) coastal polyana to get to thin ice where it can get to open ocean, closer to the Xue Long, which is making about 0.1 knots far inside the icepack. The AS no longer shows on http://www.marinetraffic.com Live Ships maps. The last listed location is NZ, Dec. 8.

Guardian is way off itself in the fourth of its “facts”
Contrary to some of the more outlandish claims made by climate change deniers, the ship was not suddenly enveloped by ice due to rapidly plummeting temperatures. It was pinned by ice carved off from the Mertz glacier, a well-established ice formation.
If that was true the ice around Shokalskiy would consist of icebergs and/or growlers and bergy bits. It does not, it is just ordinary, though thick sea-ice as anyone who has the slightest experience of arctic conditions can see, Ever tried to stamp out a helipad on a growler, anyone?

GOOD FOR YOU to do your bit v. a v. Janet Rice. Poor kid. (head shake) She really needs serious help in many directions, huh?
So, I am a “God-botherer,” eh? Not sure exactly what that means, but, I have a guess… sorry if I’ve tried to ram God down your throat; that is NOT a good thing to do, that is for sure. I’ll try to be more sensitive — it’s just such a natural part of me (not that that is an excuse, simply the reason) that I do it ALL the time. Well, just in case you had an insight I’d overlooked,
*!*!*WARNING TO NON-BELIEVERS – sense of humour mandatory beyond this point*!*!*
I thought I’d better telephone him (sort of like Reb Tevye, “Oh, am I bothering you?….” heh) to see whether I was bothering him too much (what with all my praying for this and praying for that, yadda, yadda). In fact, if you’d like to hear me (wink) – (actually, I do sound like she when I sing jazz songs, so it’s sort of authentic…) — with a little back-up from some brothahs and a sistah …..
“Operator” … long distance… @(;))

(Manhattan Transfer)
With love and best wishes for a GREAT 2014,
Your annoying-but-true American ally for science truth,
Janice

Janice;
Re your video at http://wattsupwiththat.com/2014/01/03/friday-funny-the-guardian-and-josh-together-at-last/#comment-1524298 , did you notice the AGW nonsense beginning at 19:30 or so? Wotta larf. We’re depriving the Emperors of their sea ice! I wonder if he’s one of Turkey’s buddies.

Hm, blew that link. Meant to refer to another video, showing the penguins using microbubbles. Can’t even find it now!
