Seen at AGU 2013

From Gavin, who was being a bit cheeky. Or perhaps given the location, had passed a tippling point.

For those who don’t get the joke, the letters M, B, and H should ring a bell.

On a side note, the balding with goatee/beard to clean shaven ratio at AGU 2013 wasn’t nearly as high as I expected it to be. I’d say about 1-10. It seems to be a trait of Real Climate scientists, tectonic and geology guys, not so much.

I was going to comment on the high ratio of balding pates in the photo at Judith Lean’s presentation.

Sweaters? I’d be wearing my short sleeved shirts. Ah well, lots of Swedish genes and living in New Hampshire. It does seem a cooler than usual lately, even at work.
Does the temperature in some meeting rooms drop by 5 degrees when you walk in?

Quite a gallery of something-or-others.
Was it taken at the “Ethics breakout session” per chance?

Shouldn’t it be “et” on Ray’s napkin? Given how far our there these three are, ET is probably more appropriate however.

I’m assuming they passed their tipping point in a bar. If so, then did those three merry pranksters who passed their tipping point engage in the proper practice of adequate tipping?
I think the answer to that question depends upon whether they were at that convention on the taxpayer dime (silly question, I know).
If the tipping was funded courtesy of the taxpayer then I’ll bet Harry, Moe, and Larry tipped lavishly.
If the tipping was funded out of their own pockets – not so much.

What are the thermostats set at.

“On a side note, the balding with goatee”
Pedant mode: Actually Mann’s isn’t a Goatee, it’s a Van Dyke, modern hijacked usage not withstanding. So there probably weren’t many goatees at all.

More often than not, there does seem to be a strong correlation between leftism and facial hair, at least in urban areas.
Strange, since Lenin considered beards archaic, feudal and unbecoming of the new Soviet man.

THE HOCKEY STICK
There was a crooked Mann
Who played a crooked trick
And had a crooked plan
To make a crooked stick
By using crooked math
That favored crooked lines
Lysenko’s crooked path
Led thru the crooked pines
And all his crooked friends
Applaud what crooked seems
But all that crooked ends
Derives from crooked means

So that’s why George RR Martin is taking so long with the next Game of Thrones book. He has been busy writing fiction for Michael Mann…..

If it does, they’ll just say the room was colder before Anthony came in and adjust the temperatures upwards when hes not looking….

It’s just par for the course. Someone else on a different website pointed out:
2 Years between books 1 and 2
2 Years between books 2 and 3
5 Years between books 3 and 4
6 Years between books 4 and 5
Martin seems to have his own hockey stick of increasing years between books. Hopefully HBO will kick his butt to get book 6 out by when they need it. Book 7? Who knows.
Winter is coming.

In San Francisco, yep. Far too cold for comfortable toes without socks at the least. You still see a few “hardy” souls wearing shorts, but even they are wearing sweaters or sweat shirts. I was avoiding lethal patches of sidewalk ice in Sacramento this morning at 10:30.

Have you heard any comments at the meeting about the Bay area’s recent cold spells?

December 11, 2013 11:41 am

Your comment about the demographics in interesting in that I’ve been looking for the new hatchlings of the Climate Wars and eco-green activism in general. There don’t appear to be any. The mighty leaders have inspired acolytes but no replacements. The succession planning for a project so important – the saving of planet Earth all all in the biosphere upon Her – seems to be lacking.
Odd, huh? Has the Cassandra-like approach of the Gore-Suzuki-McKibben-Hansen-Royal Society become too obvious to encourage involvement, or, perhaps, the Fuehrer-like leadership brooks no followers who might have different thoughts?

At least in the EU, thousands have been bred, for instance at the uni of Barcelona, climate change studies; but they probably all aspired to become Eurocrats instead of scientists, only to find themselves not in Brussels but in Mom’s basement after Spain’s collapse. Eurocrats are a hardy species and don’t make room easily for young pretenders. The aging beltway dweller probably shares this stubborness.

Actually, a little self deprecating humor from two members of the Team is a nice surprise. Now if only there were a hint of that kind of humility in the other member in the pic.

Quote from ChinesePosters.net:

The portraits of the founding fathers of Marxism-Leninism have been displayed on Tiananmen Square on every occasion of national importance: Marx and Engels on the side of the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, Lenin and Stalin on the side of the Great Hall of the People, all facing Mao’s portrait affixed to the Forbidden City. The portrait of Sun Yatsen, the father of the Chinese Revolution, is usually placed in the middle.
Irreverent Chinese used to call these five portraits “The History of Shaving”: from the bearded Marx and Engels to the goateed Lenin to the mustachioed Sun and Stalin, culminating in the hairless face of Mao.
