Australian Elections Bring Climate Common Sense

WUWT reader “Conrad” submits this story:

The new Government is reversing alarmist climate policy and law.

The Australian Federal elections of September 7, 2013 saw the left-wing Green/Labor party coalition ejected from control of the Government in favor of a center-right National/Liberal party coalition.  One of the immediate consequences:  Federal cabinet has ruled that Australia will not sign up to any new contributions, taxes or charges at this week’s global summit on climate change ….

The post is http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/timblair/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/good_good_good/ on Tim Blair’s very skeptical, funny and insider blog about many inscrutable and scrutable things Australian.

Another policy plank of the new Government is repeal of the hated carbon tax.  As with most Utopian comprehensive law, unwinding it will be difficult https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDkQqQIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theaustralian.com.au%2Fnational-affairs%2Fpolicy%2Fgenerator-to-be-hit-by-the-carbon-repeal%2Fstory-e6frg6xf-1226756949353&ei=a8h_UuvxHImPrQe8voCwCw&usg=AFQjCNEvdnNM71KNfc6sqSnrK8o68G75Zw&sig2=XLjk35RrcVSfZoly5aiZJQ&bvm=bv.56146854,d.cWc, but the repeal legislation will be introduced soon.

Tim’s blog is also very good at mocking http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/timblair/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/the_ego_of_david_suzuki/ those who have earned it.

Lead the way (Out of stupidity?)? Not a chance! Seriously! We have at least 3-4 “climate change” articles in the Aussie MSM, DAILY, literally blaming weather events on Abbotts threat to abolish the carbon tax.
The recent typhoon that struck the Philippines is being firmly blamed on AGW driven climate change here.

No mention in UK on Austrailian climate stance. Silence says it all
BBC reports its the lack of CFC’s causing the halt in temps. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24874060

Never a mention of that big yellow orb in the sky

The government’s document also says that Australia “will not support any measures which are socialism masquerading as environmentalism”.
The above is from Australia’s position document for the Warsaw UNFCCC conference as reported over at Jo Nova.

Leading on from Black Pearl’s link about the research findings that it is the reduction in CFC’s which have caused the ‘standstill in warming’…
Noticed the point in the article that CFC’s have 10000 TIMES the ‘warming’ potential of CO2..
I thought ‘the science was settled’..?

It is important to alert Australians to stealth programs like the US and UK sponsored Belmont Challenge that commenced in 2009 with operating docs issued in 2010 that they are listed as cooperating with. Just not on the list of initiatives Gillard or career bureaucrats are likely to point out. Also the Future Earth Alliance that went operational in 2013 replacing the Earth System Partnership. All of this is taking place in Sweden in connection with the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme.
Also quite a bit of this socialism masquerading as environmentalism gets hidden as “systems science” and is an especially integral part of Australia’s new education reforms. Australians, Canadians, and Americans all need to be alert to what the OECD means by the term the Great Transition.
None of this is lying in the open but it all comes out of the UN’s Human Development emphasis and what is really meant by Education for Sustainability after the 2005 World Summit. Hardly anything not intended for transformation or Overlordship by the public sector and international bureaucrats.

I really think no one needs to worry too much. The younger generation that fell for the AGW are now growing up and probably most will realize the idiocy within 5 years at most I say. Their children will have no interest in the issue as temperatures will probably continue to fall well below any model and even flatlining.

Australia Says ‘No’ To $100 Billion Climate Fund
Funding Drought Threatens UN Climate Agreement
The federal cabinet has ruled that Australia will not sign up to any new contributions, taxes or charges at this week’s global summit on climate change, in a significant toughening of its stance as it plans to move within days to repeal the carbon tax. This rules out Australia playing any role in a wealth transfer from rich countries to developing nations to pay them to decrease their carbon emissions. The decision hardens the nation’s approach to the UN’s negotiations amid a renewed push from less-developed countries this week for $100 billion a year in finance to deal with climate change. –Greg Sheridan, The Australian, 11 November 2013

Lacking any empirical evidence that global warming is taking place (in fact, just the opposite) I find it preposterous that AGW has any standing at all after all these years. I guess I underestimated the stupidity of a large portion of the populace to believe this idiocy and definitely underestimated the greed and evil of the scientists and politicians to keep the gravy train rolling to the serious detriment of the people. I seriously doubt if I’ll see this nonsense come to an end within my lifetime. What an incredible and depressing waste this has been.

They now realise CO2’s inexorable rise has not caused any global warming over the past decade or two now. They desperately need to find a bogeyman. The only candidate is the molecule that affects UVB absorption.
So, they are basically saying the lack of UVB absorption causes the air to cool down. How odd, I cannot find any such empirical evidence for this, anywhere. UV hitting the ground, the sea or the atmosphere does not re-radiate (fluoresce) in the IR. That’s it. Game over.
They would be crap at playing chess. Cornered to play a bad hand, We just toppled the King. 🙂
I suggest reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion
Here we see how they attempt to fit in the theory but in providing a full story trip themselves up everywhere.

Andyj
November 11, 2013 8:50 am

Or did the lack of UVB absorption heat the atmosphere up? This will preclude CO2 totally.

At this link you can find the earlier paper by Q-B.Lu from University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. where he proposed a link between cosmic rays and the greenhouse effect of CFC. He shows near perfect linear correlation between global temperatures and stratospheric CFC between 1970-2012. He proposed an mechanism for the effect and even makes a future temperature prediction: more cooling as CFC’s deplete. Worth a read.

Hope:
Since you’ve read the article, is this one of those deals where he looks at stratospheric gases to the neglect of the rest of the atmosphere? So, if could be something like temperature driving distribution of CFC’s and not the other way around?

The Abbot government will have a fairly torrid time, due to the entrenched and believing green technocrats that came straight out of University and into cushy jobs in the E.P.A. and other science jobs with C.S.I.R.O. and Bureau of Meteorology (B.O.M.) or straight back into University research places with the object of finding reasons to regulate social change imposed under a mantra of saving the planet.
As the science of CAGW was exposed as a sham, the immediate effect was to resort to claims that we who questioned were anti-science after all in their view no credible scientists existed that questioned and as we put up example of credible scientists, they were instantly smeared, linked to tobacco and big oil – anything to head off examination of scientific fact.
Now that those tactics are not working we have the rear guard with groups rigging the science to appear credible, but only if you don’t allow debate. there have been incredible political agenda to shut down any examination of the science.
The left wing dominated Australian Broadcasting Commission is staffed with cronyism and an absolute hate of the Abbot government any anyone that opposes the concept of dangerous climate change. Very Gore like, in claiming bushfires, floods, wind and rain as proof absolute of the Climate getting worse even though other media tries to highlight past natural events in our history.
The average Australian has seen through the ridiculous Flannery’s and some of the more strident voices pushing this wheelbarrow, but moves by the Abbot government to remove those from the government taxpayer funded teat, has sent the green element into a frenzy, they resent their loss of POWER and influence so now the whole meme is in frantic re-organisation to get back into a position of power, hence the stupid efforts of the Lewandowski’s, and the University based left wing so called intelligentsia.
So it won’t be easy for Abbot and his government, hopefully sanity will prevail, but already the shrill minority is baying at their heels, after all they have been the ones with their noses firmly in the favoured trough and enjoying the waste on doubtful projects, and they do not want to lose that.

Tim Blair’s characterization of David Suzuki is so right on – the narcissism of Suzuki, Mann, Hansen, Lewandowski, and their ilk sticks out like a furuncle on their noses.
So also, for that matter, does der Fuehrer’s narcissism in matters of climate as well as everything else. Only, his badge ought to be the Charlie Chaplin mustache – when is he going to grow one?

Tom Hope

@JDN
To quote Lu, he demonstrates (with a 0.96-97 correlation coefficient) “that halocarbons (mainly CFCs) alone could indeed result in the observed global surface temperature rise of about 0.6c in 1950-2002” (page 18 of the paper). After the signing of the Montreal Protocol (1987) CFCs in the atmosphere began to reduce post 1997/8 and although modulated by a cosmic ray effect (CRE) that he describes in detail he predicts continuing temperature declines as CFCs reduce. He believes that non CFCs GHG contributions (mainly CO2 ) have likely saturated. Read the paper, it is well written and digestible..

But the Montreal Protocol was more smoke and mirrors, lab experiments extrapolated to natural phenomena.
http://en.mercopress.com/2013/10/29/ozone-hole-slightly-smaller-than-average-this-year-according-to-nasa?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily
“There was a lot of Antarctic ozone depletion in 2013, but because of above average temperatures in the Antarctic lower stratosphere, the ozone hole was a bit below average compared to ozone holes observed since 1990,” said Paul Newman, an atmospheric scientist and ozone expert at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.”
So natural variation plays a large part but is rarely acknowledged and they cannot identify how much, very similar to AGW. In August 2006, the WMO issued this statement:
Antarctic ozone forecasted to recover in 2065.
“A new scientific assessment, released Friday by the World Meteorological Organization, WMO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says that the stratospheric ozone layer that protects life on Earth from excessive solar radiation will recover five to15 years later than previously expected.”
So is it “healing” or not? Has the planet been saved? Perhaps it wasn’t really in danger after all. It is emphatically claimed by the EPA and repeated in all discourse on the issue, that there are no natural sources of CFC’s. This is untrue but is rarely challenged, although it is here: http://cfc.geologist-1011.net/
Also check this out for the background on how Chinese and Indian companies were paid for destroying CFC’s under the UN CDM, which they had deliberately produced so they could destroy them and claim the credits.

Tony Abbott is off to a good start by refusing to have anything to do with the Warsaw BS fest. It is time people start smelling a rat with the UN’s proposed 100 billion dollar a year climate fund. Hello, the UN are the very ones plugging the CAGW line. Conflict of interest? Smell a rat?

Abbot has the razor out and has just finished stropping it to a super fine edge. The Australian Climate Commission was axed, CSIRO has been warned it will also get sliced, diced and julienned to get it back to it’s core business which is science not political debating, the quangos in the form of think tanks and policy groups are going the way of the Dodo Bird, Australian Institute of Marine Science likewise is under the microscope, (funny how when it is time for the next round of budgets they come up with a new ‘disaster’ endangering the Great Barrier Reef – Crown of Thorns Starfish plague caused by – yes you guessed it cAGW) and 12000+ public service jobs are also set to be cut away. Next will be RET’s (Renewable Energy Targets) so it will be goodbye and good riddance to all our wind farms. I can’t say that I am all that upset about the RET’s being abandoned as they have caused huge increases in power prices and this old wombat is a pensioner who can ill afford them.

My reading is that they seeem to be implying that 0.1 deg C of warming in the 20th century was caused by CFC emissions not CO2. So sounds like another reason to reduce climate sensitivity to CO2 and adjust the models appropriately.

Recently, Nature waved through the regional hockey stick paper without proper peer review and on the very last day for consideration in the recent IPCC report, despite the same paper had previously been rejected by Science.

KenB has summed it up very well. This is not the end. It is not the beginning of the end. It is not even the end of the beginning. It is going to be harder for Tony Abbott than it was for Sir Winston in London in 1940 before he can parade through the halls of the Australian Parliament with his right fingers raised in the victory sign.
Neither is Tony Abbott a Churchillian statesman with the talent and skill to sway the emotion of the masses with the power of the spoke word. He is a man of action, much happier riding his bike through the tree lined avenues of the capital or leading his local rural fire service team fighting a bush fire in the Blue Mountains. And his Environment Minister Greg Hunt has as much power of persuasion as his lookalike Mickey Rooney arguing the case for vows of marriage.
And then there is the opposition on the Left. They may have lost the House of Representatives holding only 55 seats to the Coalition’s 90 but until July 2014, with the help of the Greens they still hold the power in the Senate. And taking away the control of taxing CO2 (which they have cleverly redefined as “carbon pollution”) will be like taking a bone away from a dingo.
The new parliament opens to-day with the ceremonials but tomorrow the action will begin that will set the tone of the war. Tony Abbott’s top priority is the repeal the carbon tax bill and this will be the first item on the agenda. Bill Shorten, the new Labor Leader has said he will not support the repeal of carbon tax unless it is replaced by an emissions trading scheme. I don’t think that Tony Abbott will impose a double dissolution election on the vote weary public to get around this impasse so may have to wait for the new Senate next July.
Even then the result will not be certain as Abbott does not have the outright numbers and will depend on an unpredictable octet of unaligned senators made up of one pure independent and a handful of fringe parties including, would you believe it, the Australian Motor Enthusiast Party. As it stands at present the Coalition has 33 seats, Labor 26, Greens 9 and Others 8 for the new Senate starting July 01 2014.
On top of this, because the vote was close for the 6 Senate seats from Western Australia, when a recount was held it was discovered that 1370 votes were lost. If a WA Senate re-election is decided, everybody would want to throw their hat into the ring and anything could happen – which may turn out bad or good for Tony Abbott. Whatever the outcome of this, he is still going to have to negotiate in the Senate and judging by some of the attitudes of new senators he may have a bigger fight on his hands as prime minister than he did as opposition leader to show us the way.
As far as carbon tax goes, much will decide on what the rest of the world does. I am sure that by not following Europe’s ETS, the USA has had a great influence on the vote of the Australian public and Abbott’s attitude to climate change. Churchill also said “You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing – after they have tried everything else. I hope he was wrong about the latter.

Given the number of articles in the MSM here in Australia, on a daily basis maybe 3 to 4, I reckon Abbott has a snowballs chance in hell repealing the carbon tax, even if there is a double dissolution vote. What happened in WA is a worry, ~1400 ballots go “missing”? Suspicious at best. However, having dealt with the Australian Electoral Commission recently, to me it seemed the left hand had no idea what the right hand is doing because both were numb!
The Typhoon in the Philippines is being squarely blamed on AGW here in Aus.

In politics, stating an intention to repeal a law and actually doing it are very different things.
Politicians ( front men for the business interests of who ever pays them the most ) are just as likely to be trying to appease the masses only with hollow words rather than law changes.
” We’re pulling our troops out of Iraq ” – George and Tony 2003. Still in there in 2013.
I’ll believe the Australian government is going to nullify the carbon tax only after its been done, not before.

The old saying “you can’t cheat an honest man” has roots in basic human nature.
Honest people always tell the truth, and are very uncomfortable with lies.
These people are more likely to be able to tell when they are being lied to, and have little patience with liars.
When these people run out of patience, politicians and other professional liars should beware.

Has PM Tony Abbott repealed the law prohibiting businesses from posting signs communicating how much prices have risen because of the Carbon Tax? Or perhaps he could change the fine from $1.1 million dollars to $1?
“The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has been directed to enforce accurate business promotions with a $1.1m dollar fine, and team of 23 “carbon cops”, to stop Australian businesses from posting any signs telling the public how much extra they are paying due to the Carbon Tax, or having a “Pretax sale”.
