Why doesn't Lewandowsky study this phenomenon?

One of the favorite smears from Dr. Stephan Lewandowsky used to try to diminish the arguments of climate skeptics is to create dodgy psuedo-scientific psychological studies with a bent on trying to prove that skeptics are conspiracy theorists. Except for the extremely gullible, such bleatings don’t appear to have any traction. But he does keep trying.

Meanwhile, right in front of his nose, there is a regular parade of conspiracy theory linkages happening daily. For example, get a load of this latest claim from Dr. Michael Mann:

Mann_koch_dinnerfor2

You just have to laugh at the idea that the Koch brothers are paying people to write the sort of comments (27) as of this writing that appear on the Phys.org article: http://phys.org/news/2013-10-people-dont-high-climate.html

I dunno, how does one “smell” Koch in those comments? Is it anything like trained animals that can spot certain scents?

Practically every day now Dr. Mann imagines some Koch brothers connection to people who have honest disagreements about climate. Recall these recent ventures into conspiracy theory land:

Mann_libel_koch

Which I answer here: The other divergence problem – climate communications

It’s part of Mann’s recurring theme:Mann overboard! Pot, kettle, conspiracy edition

The reality is, Koch even contributes to Dr. Mann’s University: Oh the pain! #Kochmachine is in many American universities, including Penn State

IMHO, I think Dr. Mann needs to seek professional help for this affliction where he sees the Koch Brothers climate influence under every virtual rock and tree on the Internet. If nothing else, this affliction would make a good clinical case study for some psychologist.

Now watch, someone will alert Dr. Mann to this writing, and he’ll tweet something about it with some added smear, or retweet something from one of his followers along the same lines. It’s as sure as the sun rises in the morning, I don’t even need a computer model.

“On the blogs, the fight was particularly fierce. Fox PR staffers were expected to counter not just negative and even neutral blog postings but the anti-Fox comments beneath them. One former staffer recalled using twenty different aliases to post pro-Fox rants. Another had one hundred. Several employees had to acquire a cell phone thumb drive to provide a wireless broadband connection that could not be traced back to a Fox News or News Corp account. Another used an AOL dial-up connection, even in the age of widespread broadband access, on the rationale it would be harder to pinpoint its origins. Old laptops were distributed for these cyber operations. Even blogs with minor followings were reviewed to ensure no claim went unchecked. ”

Speaking of Cook & Lewandowsky.
You all might be interested in the itinerary of the science program at the upcoming AGU Annual Fall Meeting in San Francisco from Dec 9 thru Dec 13. It features:
– Cook & Lewandowsky are teamed up together to give multiple appearances each of two days during the 5 day AGU meeting. They were invited by the AGU leadership to give these talks.
– Cook & Nuccitelli are teamed up together to give multiple appearance each of two days during the 5 day AGU meeting. They were invited by the AGU leadership to give these talks.
– Cook & Mandia are teamed up together to give one appearance. They were invited by the AGU leadership to give the talk.
I appears anyone from the public can view, at the AGU website, the itinerary of presenters of the AGU meeting’s scientific program. Go peek at it and observe the representation of ‘IPCC centric consensus science’ vs independent skeptical science.
Last year’s AGU, which I attended, had several Cook talks, similar to the above. But this year they have ~doubled in number.
The AGU has sponsored, apparently, a Cook fest by invitation.
I shall attend the AGU meeting again this year.

One of the aspects of genuine conspiracy theorists is that they have a strong bias in supporting data that supports their beliefs and failing to consider alternative hypotheses. Indeed, the barmiest conspiracy theorists find plenty of reasons to reject anything that a suspected opponent might say. Michael Mann’s conspiracist allegations are very much in line with his cherry-picking of climate proxies and statistical methods in his hockey-stick graphs.
The opposite of a conspiracy theorist, is someone who genuinely compares and contrasts various ideas and conflicting data.

October 23, 2013 4:05 pm

I was reading a Donella Meadows book from 1982 this morning on the first decade of modelling and she kept saying over and over again that it was modelling of social systems to affect future behavior. Not to actually reflect reality.
I think Lewandowsky keeps mentioning conspiracies to avoid the admitted long term massive coordinated effort to use models like the IPCC to change policies and prevailing beliefs about how the world works. Ironic when you consider how many confessions and declarations of the “need to change human behavior” there are in print once you know where to look.

I looked at the numbers underlying these claims, at least the ones reported by Greenpeace. I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the Greenpeace numbers, but just taking them at face value, here are two links that has Greenpeace’s numbers:
http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/campaigns/global-warming-and-energy/polluterwatch/koch-industries/the-manhattan-institute/
and
http://greenpeaceblogs.org/2012/04/02/koch-brothers-exposed-fueling-climate-denial-and-privatizing-democracy/
In the second link, GreenP states:
“The top recipients of Koch money in the Climate Denial Machine include Americans for Prosperity ($5.7 million since 1997), the Heritage Foundation ($2.7 million), the Cato Institute ($1.2 million), and the Manhattan Institute ($1.2 million).”
At the first link they list the yearly amounts per organization. First notice that these numbers (e.g. 61.48 $M) are spread over almost 30 years. That makes the $61 M work out to about $2M per year total. For example the Manhattan Institute numbers have been running about $200K (note the K) per year for the past few years. The Manhattan Institute has about 5 centers, only one of which is involved in energy research. So that means maybe a few K might go to energy research. The others are ridiculously small. For example, the Environmental Literacy group got 4 grants over the 30 years, each of which was $50K. Most of the other organizations are either broad policy oriented or focus on entirely different issues, such as medical, media, or general politics, like the Americans for Prosperity, which lists 8 policy areas of research: budget and spending, health care and entitlements, taxes, labor/education/pensions, banking/financial services, technology, and energy and environment. Only the last of the eight is focused somewhat on climate.
So over 30 years, around $2M per year spread over largely general policy institutes. These grants are each about enough to fund one graduate student or researcher for a year or so, and the bulk of them have nothing to do with climate, instead focused on general conservative issues. So what the objectors to the Koch tiny investments in these institutes are actually objecting to is not climate but conservative political activities. It looks like at most about 10% of the funds might actually go to climate research, which works out to a grand and glorious $200K per year. This should be compared to the $2.6B U.S. Global Change Research Program, which is focused entirely on “official” climate change research and persuasion. I don’t know what the IPCC budget is, but it must be a lot to fly all those folks around the world to cushy hotels and great restaurants. I did not look at the budgets of Greenpeace or the plethora of other alarmist groups, largely because I don’t want to get involved in that kind of thinking. It is as petty as the claims of the alarmiss against the “evil Koch denial empire..” So in summary the Koch brothers put in about $200K compared to $2.6+++ billions for the warming scare crowd. These people have no shame.
Other information on Koch foundation grants and charitable contributions is available at its web sites and in its statements. The vast majority of the grants go directly to medical research, religious institutions (particularly catholic), universities, etc.
By repeatedly going after the Kochs, perhaps the alarmists are actually tipping their hand, namely that they are not really about climate change or science or truth at all, instead being truly focused on a more general liberal agenda toward increased taxation, government control, etc etc. Thats all well and good, that is a whole other conversation to have and should have nothing to do with climate science. They should just stop pretending that it is about science.

If you want some real humor, watch as Wankerpedia, the inexhaustible font of all things left, white-washes Kammerer:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kammerer
wherein the falsification of Kammerer’s work was all a Nazi plot:
“Koestler surmised that Kammerer’s experiments on the midwife toad may have been tampered with by a Nazi sympathizer at the University of Vienna. Certainly, as Koestler writes, “the Hakenkreuzler, the swastika-wearers, as the Austrian Nazis of the early days were called, were growing in power. One center of ferment was the University of Vienna[5] where, on the traditional Saturday morning student parades, bloody battles were fought. Kammerer was known by his public lectures and newspaper articles as an ardent pacifist and Socialist; it was also known that he was going to build an institute in Soviet Russia. “An act of sabotage in the laboratory would have been…in keeping with the climate of those days.””

Paranoid schizophrenia
By Mayo Clinic janitorial staff
Signs and symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia may include:
Delusions, such as believing CO2 will poison you
Self-important or condescending manner
Key symptoms
Delusions and hallucinations are the symptoms that make paranoid schizophrenia most distinct from other types of schizophrenia.
In paranoid schizophrenia, a common delusion is that you’re being singled out for harm. For instance, you may believe that Big Oil is monitoring every move you make or that Watts is eating your lunch. You may also have delusions of grandeur — the belief that you can forecast climate, that you’re famous or that anyone could care less. You hold on to these false beliefs despite evidence to the contrary. Delusions can result in aggression or name calling if you believe you must act in self-defense against those who want to laugh at you.

If Dr. Mann has to go on an ObamaCare (let’s see how long it takes before they try to change that name) website to find coverage to pay for that professional help, well, I think he’s going to be (insert foul word beginning in ‘s’) outta luck. And, especially since, who knows, thanks to ‘O’care he might’ve been reduced to part time employment status.

In the movie “Pretty Women” Vivian tells Edward something to the effect that he only tears things down, he doesn’t build anything. Look at the list below (name and year of birth):
Paul Ehrlich 1932
David Suzuki 1936
James Hansen 1941
Al Gore 1948
Phil Jones 1952
Michael Mann 1965
A couple of these have obtained lots of money (questionable circumstances for some?) while attaining the status of major hypocrites and being almost always wrong.
Each of these has had plenty of time to build something.
Then there are the Koch brothers:
Charles Koch 1935
David Koch 1940
They have built the U.S.A.’s second-largest privately held company and via family foundations have given away millions of dollars to charity, cancer research, arts, and science.
The time on Earth for these folks will soon pass. The Kochs have built and will be remembered for having done so. The others will be footnotes.

I hadn’t heard of the Koch Brothers but a few years ago when they became the Betes Noire of the Guardian environment pages. It was repeated incessantly that any money from these guys was tainted. They are corruptors, apparently.
This has led to a strange side effect – charitable giving has become shameful.
Recenly, I have begun to wonder if that is the real point. Charitable giivng is the only competition for a welfare state. Historically, private charity it was a compliment to a welfare state but they could be in conflict.
I’ve noticed denigration of religious charities as well because of “suspect motives”.

Such personality orders / dis-orders when they possibly collapse might well lead to a level of insanity for Mann,[ I’m actually half serious here! ]
Thats if any experts in mental states Lewendowsky might fit the bill here, will be able to pick the difference between Mann’s normal mental state and the onset of insanity..

Mann sniffs Koch.

F.A.H.,
Even if we assume every dime of the Koch money goes directly to fighting the “consensus”, it still pales in comparison to the money on the other side. From a Reuters article earlier in the week, money being spent on fighting climate change totals $359B/year, and they’re complaining that it’s down $5B from last year.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/22/climate-investment-idUSL5N0IB32X20131022
Now not all money is directly fighting AGW. Money poured into renewable energy concepts may be useful independent of the validity of CO2 causing runaway warming, but it’s clearly being promoted because of the fear of CO2-induced runaway warming.
For those that constantly pound the “fossil-fuel-lobby” meme, they conveniently ignore just how much money is on their side.

I realize that the Manns of this world believe the rich roll around in piles of money like Scrooge McDuck, but why on earth would they need to spend any money to muddy the climate waters when folks like Mann do the job for them voluntarily?

Why doesn’t Lewandowsky study this phenomenon?

Because he has his head stuck up his arse, and can’t see it…

Exxon Mobil has also donated money to Michael Mann’s Penn State University back in 2011 and 2012 funded. Exxon also donated to Pennsylvania Colleges and Universities.

A confession: I receive $10 from the Koch brothers for every comment I post here and on other climate blogs. For every 100 comments, I receive a lifetime supply of TurtleWax©. For every 1000 comments, I receive an all-expenses paid trip to Branson, Missouri. And if I can manage to leave 100,000 comments, the Koch brothers told me they will personally come to my house to mow my lawn and cook me dinner.
Not sure how Mike knew this, but I think the jig’s up. I’ll give Chuck and Davey a call to let them know — they’re going to be so disappointed.

“Is Antony Watts the best front man the Koch brothers can buy?”
Okay I’m sure Mr Watts is anxiously awaiting his first check from the Koch Bros but to be honest if they were to “buy” someone (it’s actually called hiring Mikey) they could do a lot worse. Given what Antony and his band of merry men have accomplished on a shoestring I’d hire the lot at the drop of a hat if I could.

“Now watch, someone will alert Dr. Mann to this writing, and he’ll tweet something about it with some added smear, or retweet something from one of his followers along the same lines. It’s as sure as the sun rises in the morning, I don’t even need a computer model.”
Hahahaha
Mr Watts, you are evil. Can’t we just all see Mann now. He desperately doesn’t want to mention this thread, so as to prove you wrong. Yet he wants to crow that you are wrong, yet if he does then you are right. Oh, the agonies of being The Mann.

Like St Gore and others Mann is great , can you image how much harder AGW sceptics would have to work if ‘the causes ‘ prophets came across as reasonable , claim and intelligent people rather than half-mad , ranting nutters as ready to throw an insult as to say hello.
Keep up the good work Mann.

“What do the Koch brothers smell like?”
To you and I, they would smell of Old Spice.
But to the *WITCHSMELLER PURSUIVANT* they would smell like …uh …
uh…. BEELZEBUBBLES!

He’ll probably sue the Kochs for personal injury if we manage to launch the rumor that they are using a penis shrink ray on their critics.
