One of the most requested (or most complained about depending on your view) is the need for the ability to preview and/or edit comments. I have asked for this feature time and again of the operators of wordpress.com where WUWT is hosted, but they don’t allow this feature.
Since I cannot install plugins on blogs hosted at wordpress.com, I am unable to use one of the standard plugins that allow this feature.
But wordpress.com has asked for input from both blog operators and readers, so here is your chance to ask for this feature. Given that WUWT is almost always in the top 5 blogs on wordpress.com, your input will have weight.
See below for the link to the survey:
Follow this link:
The 2013 WordPress.com Survey: We Welcome Your Feedback!
Please note:
Question 26: What’s the most frustrating thing about WordPress.com?
…is the one to fill in with the lack of a preview/edit feature for comments.
Note also (h/t JohnWho)
It is question #36 if you answer the first question that you read blogs on WordPress.
Some people wonder why I don’t self-host WUWT such as Lucia does for her blog.
The reasons are simple.
- Traffic – running a single machine wouldn’t handle peak loads, Climategate and Climate Audit’s meltdown proved that.
- Maintenance – I have none, wordpress.com handles it all. No worrying about updates.
- Reliability – As you may have noted, self operated blogs like Lucia’s and Jo Nova’s go down from time to time, wordpress.com gives me 24/7 reliability, and the horsepower to ward off attacks from people that would surely like to see it taken offline.
So, please take a few moments and take the survey and ask for the comment preview/edit feature and/or features you want
Thanks for your consideration – Anthony
any thoughts about hosting the site using WordPress on Amazons AWS cloud hosting service? You get the same distributed cloud hosting benefits, control over what modules are used, and 100% of the revenue from the ads you run. Only issue is if the 100% would cover the hosting costs. Its only a thought.
Editing would be nice, maybe limited to 15 minutes or so after you post.
It is question #36 if you answer the first question that you read blogs on WordPress.

Your wisdom at staying with WordPress is well placed. Their handling the technical aspects allows you to communicate, which is the essence of one’s rationale for hosting a great (WorldClass) site as yours has become!!!

Of course, posters could just re-read their own material before clicking on “submit” – – – – – and we’d all be saved from the scores of “oops, pardon my late-night typing” re-posts.
Is that asking too much of WUWT posters?

I would think that WUWT is the top 5 blogs on wordpress.
Mr. Jim of Geology whose excellence in proofreading leads him to conclude that EVERYONE is as self-disciplined as he…… YES! We’re human. We mess up sometimes. I do appreciate your high confidence in our proofreading abilities, however. #[:)] Personally, I find the typos often amusing and a great source of fun. HOWEVER, when the typo must be corrected to prevent misunderstanding, no editing is a pain.
Certainly, the edit function is not necessary, as you correctly point out, but it would be helpful. Why not? ….. to separate the super-achievers from the rest of us?…… hm? LOL, don’t worry, there will still be some of us (me, I’m sure) who will still not cach all ther mistaks. You will, even with the edit option, yet shine, Mr. Jij.
Also, Mr. Jim, and I know you would agree, we must bear in mind that some people who post on WUWT are sight-challenged, e.g., macular degeneration, or battling other brain or body disorders; an editing feature would make life a bit easier for them.
done.
Should this comment be considered as an insult to us with dyslexia? “Re-reading” (aka proofreading) doesn’t always help! It may take a number of “re-reads” before the comment “feels” ok, but still …
I compleded the survey with the comment that preview/edit is a valuable tool to us dyslexics.
Marco: AWS is not cheap once you get into the multi-server load balanced configurations. WordPress uses MySQL, and replicated instances of MySQL which can withstand random crashes are non-trivial. Building the system would not be cheap, running the system would be expensive (especially when compared to free).
I have been working on moving some commercial applications to AWS. Unless you are talking about stateless webservers, it is a lot more complex than people think.
Sasja L., so GLAD that you post even though you are (I take it) almost certain that you will make a mistake, here and there. You have character. Way to go!

Tnx Janice! Add that english is not my native language.
I like Likes.
I know that Likes were tried briefly, and discarded. Perhaps disable “Dislike” if you don’t want to hurt any feelings. It often really gives you a sense of the quality your comment and it’s arguments, and that can help you decide whether to replay or refine that comment for use elsewhere. Plus it gratifying, to see that your comment is liked!

Agree! The security in the “cloud” are somewhat cloudy and quite an illusion, more like a mirage.
Fine with me the way it is. Is it really secure to allow subsequent editing of one’s own comments? Doesn’t that open the door to hackers? Beats me.
Comment preview/edit would be “nice but not necessary”. There’s plenty of opportunity to edit what you write before you submit it.
Sasja L! You are DOUBLE-impressive. So glad you’re here. It humbles me to think what fine minds (v. a v. my own, I mean) and expertise and language abilities and cultures are represented here. I only speak/write ONE language. Note: DO NOT WORRY ABOUT SPELLING OR GRAMMAR ERRORS. I write that so LARGELY so that others like you might be encouraged to speak up. Nitpicking on those points is ONLY addressed (by a sane commenter, anyway) at those with fluency in English. And, moreover, nitpickers should just go find a happy little nitpickers site and have a fun time nitpicking each other. WHO CARES? It is the substance of the post that matters. And 99.9% of the WUWT commenters would, I have no doubt, agree.
You obviously missed my comment at 6:18 pm or do you suffer from dyslexia like me?
Editing would be good because I’m looking at my “I Like Likes” comment above, and I’m thinking the “I Like Likes” part would be fine (better) not bolded! But also, that reminds me that a PREVIEW feature would be almost as good as an Edit feature. If I had to pick one or the other, I’d probably go with Preview, though both would be great. And Likes would be awesome! Not for a lame comment like this though, as it would probably be buried in dislikes, lol.
Done
Eric Simpson, I liked the bold version. I like your second comment better than your first, though, because it reflects your fun personality (MOST of your comments show that, BTW — they have (usually) zest, humor, and joie de vivre). Oh, brother, I need to go exercise something besides my virtual mouth!
Later.
Comment editing? YES!!! But time limited 10-15 minutes to avoid re-writing. IIRC there are pre-built modules that do this.

Dear Janice,

Janice, I actually care to a certain point. Misspell’s I’ll get eventually but grammatical errors can be horrible when I read. Often I’ll get stuck on simple stuff like a comma before an conjunction (it becomes a “double conjunction”) and are common in american english (not “allowed” in other western languages and probably not in eastern either)
I’ve met young people that think it’s ok to “modernize” (native) language in any manner that suits them and no suprise, same young people complain about older people not understanding them. Wonder why …?
@Janice Moore says: July 20, 2013 at 6:52 pm
THANKS a ton! Sometimes, though, yes, I might wake up on the wrong side of the bed. And though I’d like to have zest and humor, I know that I can sometimes be pretty bitter when it comes to characterizing the opposition. But I like our side, us ragtag skeptics, so I’m not much into shooting out friendly fire.
And your comments are much appreciated. And it’s really good to have someone who pays attention to the others here, and can offer uplifting / motivating comments like you are doing. +10 Likes!
Another point regarding editing, you often see a typo, like perhaps an “and” instead of an “an,” or a their instead of there. Or even a word that shouldn’t be there that to some degree changes the meaning of your comment. And you have to fight the urge to put in another comment just to make the correction. Because few pay any attention to your offered correction anyway. And people usually get the meaning of it even if you made a significant error.
Proofreading is so much easier after you hiit the “Post Comment” button.
Too many tracking cookies. I did yoused too run a self-hosted blog and used UBB code;
I don’t mind my own confuser keeping track of what I do but, not anyone else.
Multiple threat detection appears for me quite often. I understand they want to advertise and can-do. No, I do not wish to be “TRACKED”! DA’S!
The servor side maintenance is a plus.
I would like to see some self-editing though, with a time constraint.
Like my opinion matters.
It is a very fast process. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Anthony.
Self-editing is tough, especially for a second language. But if post editing will require a bunch of cookies and more work for Anthony and the moderators, I’m OK as we are now.
WUWT is a learning experience for me. Thanks to you all, and the mostly good people that comment, there would no blog without you.
Done: 4 questions… easy.
If it ain’t fixed, don’t break it.
Stuff has been tried before, but there’s nothing like a “live” performance to demand the best in cementers. (See–it can get quite Freudian.)
And because we’ve all made mistakes, the occasional “oops” is overlooked–if we had editing, there’d be no forgiveness.
And please, no “Likes”–this isn’t a popularity contest. Consensus is for beauty pageants.
For years I have been using Greasemonkey which has been created for Climate Audit but works here and Lucia’s. It has a “preview” and normal functions, links, bold italic

Good point, Sasja. I can tell I’m waaay out of touch with people under 30, for I DO NOT GET why they would prefer to sit tapping madly away at their tiny keyboards to “talk” to each other instead of just picking up the phone and TALKING! Weird. Say, that reminds me of a cute anecdote in Walmart about 3 months ago…. Two little girls were sitting in a shopping cart-become-playpen in the aisle where I was shopping. I overheard them earnestly chatting away to each other about a pretend party they were planning. And this is what they were saying:
Cutiepie 1: “And then I texted you, and you said, ‘Let’s invite those guys to come, too.'”
Cutiepie2: “Okay, and I texted YOU, and said, ‘That sounds great. And let’s have pizza.'”
I looked at them and they did NOT have pretend phones to their ears. THEY WERE PRETENDING TO PUNCH TEXTS on a couple of small books!!! Amazing. They were doing what the BIG kids do.
Kind of sad, really, given the pidgin English (or whatever language) they are texting in. They aren’t even teaching cursive writing in many elementary schools anymore. AND HOW DOES ALL THIS RELATE TO THE TOPIC OF EDITING POSTS?
Well, LOL, it shows why we need it! #[:)]
*******************************************
Eric Simpson, my pleasure and THANK YOU. Yeah, I tell you – it is SO frustrating when people respond to what I did NOT say because they read only 30% or so of my post. Gotta laugh. BTW, when you skewer CAGW liars with sharp language, you are using PTW (precision targeted weaponry — just made that up — heh), for your harsh language underscores the fact that their policies are VILE.

Martin, your opinion matters. You matter. Now, go look at yourself in the mirror and say, and SMILE while you say it, “I matter. My opinion MATTERS. I like me.”
The poll is really short and convenient for anyone who responds that he’s a reader.
Comments on WordPress are really stone age, any 10 years old forum has better editing aid. I really hope they’ll improve that.
Preview is such an easy thing to incorporate, I can only assume that they are cheeseparing not to allow it.
As for editing comments, this is a good idea but needs to be limited so that people can’t weasel out of what they said (thereby making responses seem stupid). A time limit – 15 minutes is common at other blogs – is definitely required.

=====
For some reason spotting errors is easier once the text had been reformatted. I’ve never looked into the psychology of why that is but reorganising the words often makes a typo or other fault immediately obvious, whereas proof-reading has missed it.
I always re-read before posting but very often find something I missed once it gone up.
So I don’t think a preview function is too much to ask from WP. Hopefully they will listen. Afterall we are one of thier biggest ad revenue sources !
” something I missed once it gone up. ”
something I missed once it HAS gone up.
See what I mean ?
Editing is absolutely fantastic … on Tech forums where specifications and procedures are critical. We usually have infinite editing ability in these cases.
On controversial sites it is problematic because of political tactics, it is a gift horse to spammers, and on high traffic sites it is almost suicidal because your moderators will never get any sleep. Hit count should skyrocket even further as each edit results in a page load. But if you can handle it who are we to question it! I suggest you also have a “Report” button attached to each entry to flag posts for quick moderator attention.
As others have already said, time limits for editing is a really good idea that will prevent post editing to modify entire conversation direction like SkS is infamous for.
Far more important though is the ability to “Preview”. This is a high value add as it will cut down seriously on typos and formatting errors.
Anthony, one other missing feature is displaying the sequential post #. It would make in-thread referencing much easier ( e.g., “Willis in post #87 said …” ).
Editing would be helpful, but for integrity’s sake it must be limited to a reasonable timeframe after the post is made. What we wouldn’t want is people having the ability to go into old posts and change what they said days or even weeks later. (“No, I didn’t say x the other day. Look at my post.”)
Probably a matter of minutes (15-30) would be adequate for most edits. Certainly no more than 24 hours.
I like composing comments in OneNote to use its spell and grammar checking tools. But I don’t have anything that will preview my attempts at HTML tags in WordPress format. If there was a stand-along preview program, that would be sufficient.
I’d settle for an ability to delete a comment within 10 minutes so that I can correct formatting errors and resubmit. That’s better than asking moderators to delete an erroneous that via another comment.
Blade @10:22 p.m.
Agreed that post numbers would be very helpful.
As long as posts are not deleted by the moderators, that is. Posts could be killed by a [snip], but the post — and its corresponding number — need to be left in the queue. I think this is largely consistent with what already happens here at WUWT; just want to highlight this point.
Anthony….for all the people who post here, and English is their mother tongue, you all ready have that option.
It is called PROOF READ before hitting the post button.
And yes, even then, some will slip by, but hey, we are all only human.
Anthony/mod….that should be question # 36

Oh. An afterthought….I take it they do have some way to stop me editing any comment except my own? (PW?)
I love and use edit on other blogs to correct spelling, grammar, add second thoughts, and to iron out some incendiary comments. I wonder if NSA records copies of original comments, and if that affects analysis overall. The dossier NSA has on me is a couple inches thick and I’d like the ability to make some edit corrections in it.
I have a WordPress acount, from back when I ran a single-issue blog. If I submit a comment here, my email address triggers a login screen, along with a preview of the comment that is to be submitted. If I cancel the login, the comment is not submitted.
For the rest of us, I suggest opening a window with your favourite text editor, and composing your comment there. Then run a spelling/grammar checker. Once things are copacetic, copy+paste into the WUWT comment window.
“For some reason spotting errors is easier once the text had been reformatted.”
This is well known in proofreading. I make typos galore when writing comments – I type very fast – and don’t always spot them on a re-read. But I do spot them instantly as soon as they are re-formatted when posting. I’ve done a lot of professional editing and proof-reading and I’m eagle-eyed; I very rarely miss any mistake. For some reason I find it very hard to spot all my own mistakes ‘as typed’.
I agree the time window for editing should be very short – 5 mins would be adequate; otherwise some will adjust their ideas and not just their grammar and spelling
Preview: Yes.
Editing: No. If you say it you own it for all time.
No editing shows who has put some thought into their comments (and who hasn’t).
Well, that didn’t take long. Didn’t even have to tell WP how awesome they are – which, compared to *some* offerings I’ve seen, they certainly are. (Kudos, WP!)
I’m not convinced that we need to edit comments after posting them at all, security risk or not. That can be useful on a forum, but on a blog surely only the actual blogger needs to “update” the original post to clarify a point, we commenters can always post a corrected or explanatory comment a bit further down the page.
I voted for previews because you feel such a fool when your polished and hyper-intelligent comment appears on the page, only to find that the entire last half has become a link, or is unintentionally bolded, or whatever – and there’s nothing you can do about it. All I want is to see before I post that I have messed something up, giving me the opportunity to track down and correct any undetected errors in formatting or spelling. If the comment itself makes me look a pr@, so be it …

1. It’s “nit-pickers”.
2. You care, as does Bob from Stockport.
3. To be more accurate, it is actually 99.84928% of WUWT commenters who would agree.
Just sayin’.
Personally an edit feature doesn’t worry me. More than once my comment hasn’t been posted when created on site, if for example the connection drops. So if the reply I want to post is at all involved or involves links I create it on word pad or similar, spruce it up then merely copy and paste to wuwt.
if anything goes wrong it is easy to repeat the process.
tonyb
I always proofread, but… the text entry is a sans-serif font, and the final result is a serif font. To me it’s easier to spot errors in a serif font, so a preview of “how it will appear” is a good thing. Editing for a few minutes after would clear up those “hit send – OOPS” moments that we all have.
David, UK
I thought the dominant number when referring to climate related issues is 97%
My serious blunders are mostly over at surfacestations. Would that site be open to correction?
Using a text editor (of any kind) is nice when sitting in front of a computer but most of the time I’m using a smartphone. The “cut/copy & paste” have issues and spellchecking is a joke. Grammar checking, forget it. These phones are not as “smart” as the name suggest.
As several has pointed out, a preview function is sufficient help.

I tried Greasemonkey/CA Assistant for a little while. The two main gripes I had with it were slowness on big pages (e.g. Tips & Notes), and losing the contents of the text area when I did something dumb. I think that was accidentally clicking on a link and then going back to right page.
Underline is available, I don’t know why CA Assistant has trouble with it. WordPress doesn’t allow image inclusion except for people with the appropriate pivileges or things unlikely to change like YouTube links. I assume that’s part of the moderation checks – you could include a link to an appropriate image, then later change the image to be text supporting the Slayers or an unflattering image of Dr. Pachuri. (Yeah, yeah, cheap shot. I should know better.)
Também eu uso wordpress.com para o meu pequeno blog: http://sandcarioca.wordpress.com/
Sol e mudanças climáticas e para mim wordpress está otimo.
We’ve had preview on blogs before, and it’s very nice to see how it will actually look. Yes, it helps to find silly errors that detract form the point (see my point?), but it also gives the opportunity to adjust paragraph spacing, etc. which improves readability.
Preview, at least, would be nice.

The problem with AWS for WUUT, as Philip Peake noted, is that Anthony would need to maintain the server instances himself … he wouldn’t just be running WordPress; he’d be running WordPress, Linux, Mysql, load balancers, backup processes, etc. This is time consuming and quite expensive relative to what his costs are now.
A more targeted solution would be running WordPress on Google AppEngine:
https://developers.google.com/appengine/articles/wordpress
This would let him run his own instance of WordPress, not have to worry about scalability or setting up the “hardware” (server instances, databases, etc), but give the reliability/resiliency he gets from WordPress.com.
Cost, based on:
– 2 million pageviews a month
– 200kb per page
– 50 db ops per page
– existing 50 GB database
– Average two front-end instances (*)
would be around $150-$200 per month and would scale automatically up and down as needed based on load.
* I haven’t run the PHP AppEngine yet, so I don’t know how many front-end instances would be needed to handle the WUWT load …. average of two is a WAG.
Even if it is $150 per month and assuming no current hosting cost, an $1800 increase in annual expenditures for relatively incremental additions to the site might not be a wise investment.

Occasionally I open a side window like MS Word. Then copy paste. It guarantees I do not lose the comment and other features. Typos, missing words, incomplete sentences, etc. detract and in some cases are targeted by some nitpicking. Even with a preview, one will still make errors. Human Factor number one.
I find that many of my posting errors were created after I hit the Submit button. Because they weren’t there before I hit the button. Funny how that happens.
Done, popped email address in for the end results as well.
Survey done. I have a hard time editing my own work at the time of writing (mild dyslexia) but by getting away from the writing for a little as ten minutes I can become an excellent editor; IF I read EVERY word slowly. On the other hand, I can edit other peoples work pretty easily as, again, I have to read every word that’s written so I’ll catch their errors without too much trouble. So the “preview” feature would be much appreciated (as long as I would use it wisely!).
WordPress now accepts Bitcoin. I suggest that you set up a Bitcoin address for donations, which can the be passed on directly to pay WordPress. I’m sure I’m not the only Bitcoin freak amongst your readers.
If editing capability compromises security, not sure it’s a good idea. Fine for some sites, but this site is under alot more security pressure.
I don’t like ‘Likes’ – too distracting. Having said that I used to get well above average when I used to bother commenting at the Guardian. I think it’s because I kept poking holes in their climate change articles, asking inconvenient questions, presenting the past as comparison, presenting contradictory papers etc. Just shows you the number of sceptics out there, even in the left wing Guardian.
A ‘Preview’ would be nice – it would prevent lots of “Oooops! I meant…..” Why is it that I can’t easily see my typos when I’m typing, but shortly after hitting “Post Comment” my mistakes stick out like a sore thumb? Grrrrr.
I don’t think a preview screen is necessary. I always reread my text before posting, and I make mistakes anyway.
I couldn’t agree more. That’s what the ‘Preview’ function would be there for. Imagine the mayhem when people reply to something you said, then you change what you said! If someone want to clarify they should post another comment.
By the way, nested ‘Reply’ would be great. It keeps mini conversations together and saves time.
Done it. Previews are especially good to see if the formatting went well.

Absolutely not. (Anthony did try it once, utter disaster.)
I keep tabs for the active posts I’m following open and refresh them to see additions (which does lead to missing some comments that got hung up in moderation.)
Nested replies mean going back and skipping over previously read stuff. Feasible when a post get 20 comments or so, utter disaster for most of the posts here.
I would also like a poll question on the post and each comment: Like, OK, dislike with a default setting of OK. I think it would provide feedback to the participants and improve the discourse.

I didn’t know, must have been away for a while. Well, experience is the best teacher I suppose.
I like it as it is. Something puzzles me though. It seems to happen only on this site but for several weeks I have found that the font keeps flipping from one type to another and quite often back again! Please explain if anyone has any idea as to why this happens. Thank you.

Stuff it. I TRY to edit, and with the small window it doesn’t allow the full view. Especially when trying to insert images (which some people do with alacrity, but I fail every time). And leaving out a “>” can have real dire consequences but is easy to miss, even when proofreading.
So, basically, screw you. An improvement is an improvement, and better tools are better tools.
Done, its a very quick survey..
It would be helpful for a bad typist and worse proofreader like me to be able to edit after pposting.

Go with the wp.org instance on some type of modern elastic server cluster. People mentioned AWS but I have heard it is not well suited for a wp blog. Google has a new hosting service which I expect will be quite reliable. And even Bluehost offers a VPS, no peak throttle hosting option quite affordably.
