Friday Funny – great moments in 97% beliefs

C02_TCP_social_media_image_97[1]Heh, this is from a commenter at Slashdot on Cook’s fatally flawed 97% consensus paper. While a bit harsh, it’s also funny. He responds to:

Yeah! It’s like saying that 97% of priests believe in god anyway.

by Razgorov Prikazka (1699498) on Friday May 17, 2013 @11:52AM (#43753313) says:

I was at the stoplight the other day. My sister was driving. My older sister. Now, you’ve all heard that teenagers text message while driving. My sister’s approaching seventy, well past the teenage years (since seventy is, obviously, well past the teens I don’t know why I needed to emphasize that). And, guess what? She text messages. Incredible.
Anyway, at the stoplight she really wanted to get in a round of texting since, instead of having her texting annoyingly distracted by the diversion of driving, at that point she could now put her all into it. She assigned me sentry to stand guard against the green light. I thought to myself, “She’s driving, damn it, I’m not.” So I got even by being extra diligent in my sentry duty. So, as she was completely immersed in the tip tapping of her phone I said, suddenly, “The light’s…” Her head shot up, foot flicked off the brake, and at that, I completed; “still red.” She reapplied the brake, gave me a quick, dirty, disgusted look and returned to her love affair with the phone. I thought to myself, ‘what the heck, this is fun,’ so I once again said, “The light’s … red.” The same reaction ensued.
What’s the point to all of this? Well, you see my sister responded to a believe in a green light, not a mere 97% of the time, no, a big whopping 100% of the time. And, at no point in time was that light green. Does this resemble climate science?
P.S. Don’t think she hasn’t done these kind of things to me.

A spokesperson for the survey said “It is quite clear from our research that, of the 11,994 shoppers who had the choice of either apples or pears, 97% of them prefer apples.” He added “The calculation is really very simple. Just over 4,000 of the 11,994 shoppers, that’s 33.6% of the total interviewed either liked apples, preferred pears or did not mind either apples or pears. For proof, consider the Soviet empire folding like a house of cards ā€“ this did not happen for want of propaganda, and not for Ronald Reaganā€™s superhero powers either. It happened because people knew the truth, and when Gorbachev allowed it to be spoken, it was all over.
Actually, it has been much more complicated than that. In fact, not like that at all. Most of the people in the USSR perfectly knew the truth and lied through their teeth, some out of fear, the others just being happy slaves (as most of the people usually are).
The Soviet Union was brought down by many various factors, not the least of which was that this old alcoholic, Boris Yeltsin, personally, didn’t like the Soviet system much, while Mikhail Gorbachev was too reluctant to save it, being a bit ashamed of it after visiting Reagan, Thatcher, and such. Especially if it stood between them and the power. What happened in 1991 was a coup d’etat supported by Yeltsin’s friends in the military, not a revolution. Some people in Moscow went to the streets, surely, but nobody was ever armed — except Yeltsin’s military friends, of course.
If you’d ask me, based on the first-hand personal observations at the time, what played the most important role in bringing down the Soviet Union, I’d say: a fraction of the thieves-in-law seeing an opportunity to divide and rule (to rob and sell) Russia anew, first of all. And then, of course, Beatles and jeans. Never underestimate Beatles and jeans.

The poll was checking the first line of agreement in the red circle above:
“Scientists agree that global warming is happening”
The second line was not checked in the poll, certainly no “anthropogenic” existed in the scale one had to choose for the abstrac, and the 10 abstracts did not have “anhropogenic” in them. It is an arbitrary extension by the poll makers to fulfill their agenda.

Interesting how they try to save the 97% number.
Obviously too much already invested in it.
They do not acknowledge that the 97% was obtained through fake statistics, but being so deconstructed by the skeptics and more and more people getting aware of it, they try now to replace it with new statistics.
Typical.
And surprise, surprise, even if making statistics in a different area with different material they come suddenly to 97%. Not 98% or 96% or 95% but exactly the same 97%.
So yes, it is worth only to laugh about it and the fake statistics and their theories by consensus. They are in the same bucket with the astrologists.
I like those

And yeah, if you pay a million dollar grant to each and every paper which can prove “scientifically” that Santa exist, you will get ten thousands of papers demonstrating that Santa really exists. And a lot of “scientists” will take this very seriously. Of course if raw data cannot be found it can be easily proven that 97% of toys come from Santa.
This global warming religion is anti-human, anti-environment and anti-science. I think they qualify even for the most absurd epithet of anti-climate (sic). Who else denies there has been a climate and any bigger climate variations before humans “started changing it”?

My comment did not make it through. If pressed I was going to tell them the following which would really have set sparks flying as the truth hurts.
Governments reducing solar and wind subsidies.

Even if we enter a new ice age, they will maintain its dues to human activity, the mdia will still repeatthat and public policy will still follow. You will never defeat them with facts. Even blatant, obvious, undeniable facts. Theonlyway to counter them is in cultural terms. This thread has been a good example of the kind of thing of which MUCH more is needed. Ridicule is a simple starting point for those who are beginners at psychological warfare (which sceptics are, at best). Alexander Feht — the Soviet Union was done long before the putsch of 1991, which was just a futile attempt to avert this end. It was done as soon as people were given a choice to defend or abandon it. They made their choice based on what they knew about the reality of the Soviet Union, a.k.a. the truth, as opposed to based on what they were supposed to believe, a.k.a. the propaganda.
That does not contradict your description of the particulars in any way – I did not claim that freedom gives rise only to truthful thoughts or noble deeds, nor that those who undid the Soviet Union were squeaky-clean heroes.

Wamron

Wamron, I disagree with you. The truth matters; propaganda is mighty, but not almighty. For proof, consider the Soviet empire folding like a house of cards ā€“ this did not happen for want of propaganda, and not for Ronald Reaganā€™s superhero powers either. It happened because people knew the truth, and when Gorbachev allowed it to be spoken, it was all over.
Our society is misguided and absurd in many ways, but it does allow us to speak the truth as we see it. Everybody who does so helps to preserve this right, and the truth to get out.”
Well I dont know where you were throughout the Cold War…in diapers probably. The USSR was destroyed purely by military pressure and the drain imposed by dozens of third party conflicts plus Afghanistan. “People knew the truth” you say. What “truth” was that? How could “truth” have anything to do with it, it was a conflict between two power-blocs, neither of which could be described as either “right” or “wrong”.Tell us please, WHAT did the Russian people do to bring down their rulers…….NOTHING…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.They could do nothing, and you cannot name a single Soviet ordinary citizen who contributed to the collapse of the USSR, because there was none. Solzhnitsin, Sheransky, et al dont count…they were international media stars whose influence was solely upon Western nations encouraging the West to maintain its guard. Had it not been for the single minded determination of Ronald Reagan to run the USSR into industrial and financial exhaustion by immense arms spending, and Margaret Thatcher to deploy US nuclear theatre weapons against fierce local opposition, as well as sending British special forces to aid the killing of large numbers of Soviet soldiers in the field….the USSR would still exist. If you think otherwise you are living in a cuckoo land of fairy-tales.
As for speaking the truth……..you speak to each other. You have no audience and noone is listening.

Alexander Feht……….true but what you say only relates to the final page of a long story. Gorbachev and that alkie bloke only emerged because the Soviet oligarchy were seeking a leadership that could extricate them from decades of making preperation for war with the West the central feature of Soviet life. Reagans choice of hammering the USSR on all fronts, mainly by piling on weapons programmes the USSR could never compete with, bankrupting them in their effort to try, created the situation in which Gorbachev could emerge. The deployment of GLCMs in Berkshire UK and Pershing 2 in West Germany demonstrated that the US and its allies were still resolved to actually initiate use of nuclear weapons within theatre (leaving the CONUS out of conflict) whilst that theate took in Western Russia including Moscow. The deployment of these weapons against fierce and sustained, aggressive and determined Soviet funded local opposition groups, not just political but disruptive action, demonstrated the determination of NATO govts to press on with this aggressive stance. There is no ambiguity about this, the USSR was brought down by the cumulative effect of decades of military pressure culminating in the final push of the Reagan years.

97% of scientists believed in the miasma theory at one time too. They failed to recognize that correlation is not causation. Just because people became sick when the air smelled bad does not mean that bad air makes you sick. The scientists who said germs make you sick were ostracized. The miasma theory had some good because it brought about proper sanitation in cities which also reduced sickness. But nothing could change the fact that correlation is not causation. The truth eventually won and we now know that it was germs in the air and not the air itself.
There are many similarities to the miasma theory and the CAGW theory. The difference this time is that people promoting the modern day miasma theory are negatively affecting the lives of billions.

Converting a complex question to a sound bite is both misleading and effective.
1)Who among us disputes that human beings cause warming of our environment?
2)Who disputes that CO2 is a greenhouse gas?
3)Does anyone here disagree with the radiative physics that says increasing atmospheric CO2 will raise the effective radiating layer, which will tend to increase lower atmospheric temperatures and reduce upper atmospheric temps?
Obviously, we warm our environment. We are warm blooded animals, merely by being alive we produce heat. It’s physically impossible for us not to warm our environment to some extent. Clearly we at WUWT are part of the 97% consensus!
Wait, consensus about what exactly? THAT’S the issue. Does this consensus mean we agree we should immediately stop burning fossil fuels? Does it even mean we are mildly concerned? Do we have any sort of consensus about what warming we’ll see? Whoa, back up; do we in fact have a consensus that we will even see net warming at all? Hmm, it’s impossible to say based on the questions above, isn’t it.
So what was the point? The point was to generate a quick sound bite, an illusion to support policymaker decisions. 97% believe in AGW. The casual observer, and the vast majority of the population is this and nothing else, is far more interested in the last Chicago Bears game or the next episode of Jersey Shores than esoteric scientific questions and subtle distinctions. If you want to make a point to such an observer, it had best be both simple and brief. ‘97% believe in AGW’ is what such an observer will walk away with, and when the time comes to vote, he will assume that whatever policies are claimed to be required to fight AGW that 97% of scientists
support them.
He who frames the survey wins.

Like many, I’ve sat back all day monitoring this thread and watched the MSM. I am delighted that, in the UK, only the Guardian seems to have sensationalised the 97%. The BBC, for once, having obviously seen that the statistics are totally flawed, have taken the precautionary step to ignore the story. As ever, I look forward to reading Christopher Booker in tomorrow’s Telegraph. Let’s hope that he nails it for us all.

… the Soviet Union was done long before the putsch of 1991, which was just a futile attempt to avert this end. It was done as soon as people were given a choice to defend or abandon it. They made their choice based on what they knew about the reality of the Soviet Union, a.k.a. the truth, as opposed to based on what they were supposed to believe, a.k.a. the propaganda.
Is that why most of Russians wish the USSR would be back, and Vlad Putin accomodates them as much as he can? Read David Satter’s “It Was a Long Time Ago, and it Never Happened.”
Don’t be so naive, please.

Military pressure played an important role, yes. It broke the Soviet spine economically. But, as you can see in China and Vietnam, change of terminology didn’t change people much. Russia remains a land of happy slaves, thieves, and liars; most of those who could live on their own, left it already. Few stubborn old stinkers and young protesters remain but their activity is hopeless: most of Russians nstinctively need a dictatorship, because they know they cannot rely on themselves.

You sound like a VERY BOOOOOOORING PERSON.
Your comment is boring because I could have written it myself…when I was a boring twenty-something. However, I find life is only liveable if you inject some attitude. Of which you appear to have none. Choose lifeless and colourless and tasteless if you wish, but my experience is 97% or more of what counts for me.
HOWEVER…what you say is also thoroughly flawed. Observational evidence is not “anecdotal” when it generates and can be confirmed by predictable repetition. Anecdotal evidence is the reported observation which cannot be repeated whereas what I report are observations which can be repeated by anyone who cares to go to Berlin and make such observations. I say Berlin because, well, as in most things it may be that the city is different to the rest of Germany and I realise I have again generalised from the unique location to the country it represents an exception to. .
Anyway, that repeatability is a basic tenet of Popperian falsification. Which I will come to, but not yet……………Firstly you unambiguously exhibit poor comprehension skills and invert what I quite clearly stated: I actually said that the Germans I referred to said they LIKED me, but that I am the only English person they had met who they did…..180 degrees opposite of what you thought Id had written. Fail on your part.
Secondly, I never made my comments apropos ALL Germans (as the line referred to above indicates, had you shown primary comprehension skills when reading it).Fail again. I guess you can also find English people who dont hate Germans, myself for example. But for Dirk H to say that he can generalise from his own self to that of all Germans is as absurd as my denying that upwards of half of all English in any opinion survey state a dislike of Germans on the grounds that I dont myself.
Thirdly, I’m not talking about incidental Germans, but the actual experience of actually being In Germany a large part of my time. Whilst being screamed at by a woman in a peaked cap because I asked if she spoke English tends to make an impression. Your predictable whine of “anecdotal evidence” is somewhat jejeune given the Popperian validation of my hypothesis by its predictive capacity. And such “II do not speak English, this is Germany” rants do occur predictably.
Fourthly, its Germans themselves who tell me they hate the English. Is it “anecdotal” of someone to declare what they believe their own attitude. Well whether we can really know what we really feel is a question, but you are pushing the boat out there. When a guy says in good humoured tone “Agh, you are English, I hate the %^^$&* English” he either speaks literally for what he knows about himnself, or ironically for what he knows of others among his community.
Fifthly, surveys support what I say. More worryingly, that at least a third of all Germans (not just Berliners) are as anti-semitic as ever.
Sixthly..you are boring. Maybe I mentioned that, but its worth repeating. If I cannot poke you with a stick and see you jigger then whats the point? What are my “rants” a distraction from? The efforts at trying to be humorous displayed by the majority of people here are suicidally dull and witless. Have you got something brilliant to add? Come on, show us your irons.

As for the Germans, which seem to cause some kind of ruckus… Let me put it this way: 200,000 Germans protested against nuclear power in the wake of the Tohoku quake and tsunami, while the German media compared Fukushima #1 with Hitler’s bunker and said that minors, foreigners and homeless people were pressed into service by TEPCO for cleaning up there. No Germans protested against the North Korean nuclear test. German media cried murder over the Japanese daring to vote for the LDP and NInK over the DPJ and several anti-nuclear parties, but they remain dead silent over Chinese aggression in Japanese waters and territorial claims (latest claim: Okinawa; a Hong Kong pro-politbĆ¼ro paper claimed that Okinawa is Chinese territory.)
