Gore to speak at Stanford – open to the public

From

Al Gore to Speak at Stanford

March 21, 2013

Former Vice President Al Gore will give a lecture on climate change on Tuesday, April 23, in honor of former Senior Fellow Stephen Schneider, a world-renowned climate scientist who died in 2010.

Former Vice President Al Gore, chairman of The Climate Reality Project, will share his thoughts on addressing climate change within our democracy and take questions from students at Stanford University on Tuesday, April 23, when he gives a lecture in honor of Stephen H. Schneider, the Stanford professor and world-renowned climate scientist who died in 2010.

The program, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:15 p.m.) in Memorial Auditorium on the Stanford campus. Tickets are free, but seating is limited. Stanford students and postdoctoral fellows need only show their Stanford identification card to be admitted. All others should contact the Stanford Ticket Office on the second floor of Tresidder Union or by calling (650) 725-2787.

“Al Gore worked closely with Steve to sound the alarm about climate change, long before the average person understood there was a problem,” said Terry Root, a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, which is sponsoring the event along with the Stanford Speakers Bureau and two student groups on campus: Students in Government and Students for a Sustainable Stanford. Root frequently collaborated with her late husband Steve Schneider on understanding environmental consequences of climate change.

The title of Gore’s address is “Peril and Opportunity: Solving the Climate Crisis and Reinvigorating Democracy.” He is the author of the best-sellers “Earth in the Balance,” “An Inconvenient Truth,” “The Assault on Reason” and “Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis,” as well as a new book titled “The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change.” He is the co-recipient, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for “informing the world of the dangers posed by climate change.”

Gore was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982 and the U.S. Senate in 1984 and 1990. He was inaugurated as the 45th vice president of the United States on Jan. 20, 1993, and served eight years.

Steve Schneider was a leader in science communication and a world expert on interdisciplinary climate science. At the time of his death, he was the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute. His most recent work centered on communicating the possible risks, vulnerabilities and impacts of climate change to ensure that leaders were sufficiently informed to apply smart risk management strategies in climate-policy decision making.

Schneider founded the interdisciplinary journal “Climatic Change” and continued to serve as its editor-in-chief until his death. He consulted with federal agencies and/or White House staff in every U.S. presidential administration since the Nixon era. He was an author of the first four assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Memorial Auditorium is located at 551 Serra Mall on the Stanford campus. The free Marguerite shuttle can be taken from downtown Palo Alto or the Caltrain Palo Alto stations to Serra Mall. Shuttle information is available here. For parking information, click here.

Clever of Gore to agree to speak at a memorial event of this nature. If anyone makes a noise in the audience or asks awkward and nasty questions they run the risk of appearing insensitive and disrespectful of the memory of Steve Schneider.

All this global warming and climate alarmism reminds me of “The Sokal Affair” which you can read about on Wikipedia. The way lefties all recite and repeat the alarmist meme and how the MSM will “publish an article liberally salted with nonsense if it (a) sounded good and (b) flattered the editors’ ideological preconceptions” [taken from the wiki article]. I have a friend who is a pretty big name here in the Detroit area skeptical community, he is a big skeptic and atheist like me, except he is “about as liberal as you can get” as he described himself. But he believes in AGW and in my eyes that is not a true skeptic because he has not done his homework and dug up the facts.

**(i.e. questions pertaining to solving the global warming crisis, why the public is badly informed about the issue, the role of the fossil fuel industry as a roadblock, and other similar tangents thereof. Questions giving any support to, or in favor of, the skeptic community, e.g., the status of polar bear populations, Arctic ice extent, sea level rise, IPCC graphs, the urban heat island effect, and ClimateGate will NOT be answered. Also, this offer to take audience questions of any description is subject to cancellation at any time without explanation, and Mr Gore reserves the right to have suspect audience members removed at any time during his presentation. Other conditions also apply, see Stanford U for details.)

“Al Gore worked closely with Steve to sound the alarm about climate change, long before the average person understood there was a problem,” said Terry Root,……

Did he work closely with Schneider in 1971?

Abstract
………Rasool, S.I., and S.H. Schneider, 1971: Atmospheric carbon dioxide and aerosols: Effects of large increases on global climate. Science, 173, 138-141, doi:10.1126/science.173.3992.138.
……………….If sustained over a period of several years, such a temperature decrease over the whole globe is believed to be sufficient to trigger an ice age.

Did Gore learn from Schneider? No because Gore forgot the “being honest” bit, he just offers up “scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have.”

On the one hand, as scientists we are ethically bound to the scientific method, in effect promising to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but – which means that we must include all doubts, the caveats, the ifs, ands and buts. On the other hand, we are not just scientists but human beings as well. And like most people we’d like to see the world a better place, which in this context translates into our working to reduce the risk of potentially disastrous climate change. To do that we need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination. That, of course, means getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This “double ethical bind” we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. I hope that means being both.
http://stephenschneider.stanford.edu/Mediarology/Mediarology.html

Why not just be honest and damn being effective? This is what climate scientists need to do. They are not the only ones who care about the planet. Many of us also have children and a stake in the future of this planet.

The Stanford.edu article that Laurie Bowen cites, says; “”He had been struggling with a health problem for maybe seven years now and all of his friends were warning him to slow down and he was so dedicated to getting the climate science right and getting the public properly educated on it that he absolutely refused to slow down,” said biologist Paul Ehrlich, who shared bird-watching expeditions around the globe with Schneider.”
So I presume that Ehrlich and Schneider jetted around the globe on airplanes, creating CO2 along the way. And I take it that elites like them [and Gore] should be allowed to fly on jets but deniers like me should not, is that what they want?

—————————————–
I have to agree that this is more Gore doublespeak. I’m willing to wager his vision goes something like this: Our democracy must be “modernized” to allow for immediate government action on issues where “the science is settled”. A “modern” democracy cannot allow deniers and flat-earthers to delay or subvert government control over anything and everything anthropogenic, or whatever the government defines to be anthropogenic.

And, unencumbered by the less wooden, more vaguely humanoid Tipper, mother of his political prop kids, he can put all those ill-gotten gains to good use hiring hookers brought into his rotund presence by the SS, so that honest American masseuses no longer need to fear his mashing & awkward unwanted advances.

Jimbo:
I went to your Wiki link on the religious views of Sir Isaac & was surprised to find no mention of his last published work, The Revised History of Ancient Kingdoms, over forty years in the writing. That book alone makes your point re. Mann & Spencer, since Newton believed that the creation occurred about the same time as computed by Bishop Ussher, ie less than 7000 years ago.
Within a few decades scientists (eg. Buffon) started to question the age of the Earth based upon biblical chronologies, but that important development in geology, biology, astronomy & other sciences hadn’t yet begun at the time of Newton’s death. The devout Danish Lutheran turned Catholic priest & bishop Steno (d. 1686) had however already founded the sciences of geology & paleontology.
So as not to have posted totally off topic, here is a sample question I sent a friend’s daughter now a senior at LSJU:
“Depending upon which temperature series you chose & despite continued increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, Earth’s climate has trended sideways or cooled since before Stanford undergrads were born, were babies or toddlers. The series which have suffered the least “adjustment” by compilers in the pay of Big Government show cooling. This is contrary to all predictions made by global warming advocates for the past 30 years or more. How would you, Mr. Vice President, explain these inconvenient truths? Thank you, sir, & I have a follow up…”
I’m sure the Suzuki Female Guard Battalion (the N. Korean monarchical Kims have regiments) would be only too happy to escort her from the premises, while roughing her up in the process.

Except its not a memorial for Steven Schneider. Its an Al Gore type speech given in honor of Steven Schneider to be held at the Stanford Memorial Auditorium. Other than the ‘Steven and I were buddies’ and ‘Steven would have wanted this’ obligatory remarks, I wouldn’t expect much more than maybe a moment of silence.
Then its off to the races for Al’s address. It will be interesting to learn how he plans to ‘reinvigorate democracy’, since we all presently live under a constitutional republic which is guaranteed. Perhaps he will propose a constitutional amendment. Of course ‘solving the climate crisis’ is a big order as well, but I’m sure it has something to do with not burning fossil fuel.
I Hate to be a spoiler for anyone planning to attend, but I don’t really think this address will be anything other than a photo op for Al and a future claim of being a Stanford Lecturer. Oh, and the lecture fee of course.

I plan to attend if I can get a ticket. Gore’s movie said he deduced that CO2 caused warming because there was a very long-term correlation. Yet, the warmist models say that CO2 wasn’t sufficient to be a factor in the warming until around 1950 or 1960. Furthermore, we now know that temperature has been level for 16 years while CO2 rose. I’d love to ask Gore about this, but doubt that I’ll get a chance

This is why I think it is most appropriate to designate the fervent agitators for urgent “action” on climate change as “Alarmists” — that is the best label for what distinguishes their view from others (including varieties of “lukewarmers” as well as those more critical of AGW). The most important distinction for all of these debates, both scientific and policy, is between who thinks there should be grave “alarm” now vs. all other varieties of views which allow for more time for research and debate. This also helps to explain why claims of a vast “consensus” of scientists on AGW are worse than meaningless (actively misleading) if the issues are not posed in terms of grave alarm and danger. Plenty of people both in and out of climate science think that some form(s) of human impact on climate *may* occur without thinking we see grounds for serious ***Alarm*** ***Alarm*** ***Alarm***
[emphasis added]

“Al Gore worked closely with Steve to sound the alarm about climate change, long before the average person understood there was a problem,” said Terry Root, a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, which is sponsoring the event along with the Stanford Speakers Bureau and two student groups on campus: Students in Government and Students for a Sustainable Stanford. Root frequently collaborated with her late husband Steve Schneider on understanding environmental consequences of climate change.

Glad to hear he is going to be at Stanford. It has been an unusually hot and dry winter, so we can use the snow.

He’ll likely be pitching his new book, mentioned above, “The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change”,
http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/12758
He talks about the future that he sees and what those drivers of change are. One, lest we forget, is climate change.

I encourage everyone to kick off the 14th with a viewing of the famous South Park documentary “Manbearpig.” It’s free, it’s real, it’s true, it’s devastating. Excelsior!
http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s10e06-manbearpig
“Former Vice-President, Al Gore, speaks to the students of South Park Elementary about a serious threat to the planet; Manbearpig. Gore enlists the boy’s help to search for the elusive creature and gets them all trapped in a cave-in.”
“Albert Gore Jr. won the Nobel peace prize was vice president for 8 years without scandal …”
Roger Knights says:
Not quite. Here are a few interesting quotes from the book, The Stupidest Things Ever Said by Politicians:
On Illegal Fund-Raisers at Buddhist Temples, Al Gore on:
Explanation number 1: It wasn’t a fund-raiser, it was a “community outreach event.”
Explanation number 2: It wasn’t a fund-raiser, it was just “finance-related.”
Explanation number 3: It wasn’t a fund-raiser, it was a “donor-maintenance meeting.”
There’s also this amusing tidbit:
On Historical Knowledge, Vice-Presidential:
“Who are these guys?”
Al Gore, referring to the busts of Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, and Lafayette on a televised tour of Monticello. (p. 109)
And this:
“A zebra cannot change its spots.” (p. 54)
And this:
On Senator’s Sons, Typical Days of:
“[My father] taught me how to clean out hog waste with a shovel and a hose. He taught me how to clear land with an ax. He taught me how to plow a steep hillside with a team of mules. He taught me how to take up hay all day long in the hot sun and then, after a dinner break, go help the neighbors take up hay before the rain came and spoiled it on the ground.”
Vice President Al Gore on the virtues of farm life, not mentioning that, as a rich senator’s son, all this was presumably learned on summer vacation from Harvard. A real farmer’s son, Republican National chairman Jim Nicholson, replied, “Mr. Vice President, with all due respect, you’re shoveling a lot more of it right now than you ever did back then.” (p. 141)
And this:
On Timing is Everything:
“[Due to pollution, cars pose] a mortal threat to the security of every nation.”
Senator Al Gore in his 1992 book,
Earth in the Balance.
“Here in Motor City we recognize that cars have done more than fuel our commerce. Cars have freed the American spirit and given us the chance to chase our dreams.”
Vice President Al Gore — while gearing up for his 2000 presidential run — in a 1999 speech to the Economic club of Detroit. (p. 253)
Wade (06:46:18) :
Ah yes, Al Gore. Does anybody remember the fuel additive MTBE? It just so happens that this fuel additive was ground water poison. It can be cleaned up, but it ain’t cheap. Does anybody remember who was the one pushing MTBE? Answer: Al Gore and Carol Browner.
Here is what is known. A disciple (and yes I mean disciple) of Al Gore, Carol Browner, knew MTBE was groundwater poison but destroyed those documents. The data was suppressed that showed a dissenting viewpoint; sound familiar?
For sins like this, Al Gore gets an honorary doctorate. Hey, I recycle a lot. I haven’t damaged groundwater and aquifer supplies. I guess I should dump nuclear waste in my local groundwater if I want to be awarded an honorary doctorate.
MTBE shows us that obviously a tiger can’t change his stripes. Once an eco-scammer, always an eco-scammer. And what is worse, people think the tiger is this safe innocent cute kitten who couldn’t harm anybody.
If you want a history of Al Gore and MTBE, don’t use Wikipedia. Magically, Wikipedia doesn’t include the connection between Al Gore and MTBE, not anywhere. Not even under the page dedicated to the MTBE controversy. Just use your search engine of choice and search for the words Al Gore MTBE. This link will get you started.

Here are some quotes from Gore’s “Climate of Denial” article in Rolling Stone, at

… “the referee [the media] appears not to notice that the Polluters and Ideologues are trampling all over the “rules” of democratic discourse. They are financing pseudoscientists whose job is to manufacture doubt about what is true and what is false; buying elected officials wholesale with bribes that the politicians themselves have made “legal” and can now be made in secret; spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year on misleading advertisements in the mass media; hiring four anti-climate lobbyists for every member of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Those are five wild overstatements, especially the last two. I haven’t seen any contrarian mass media ads. And, if there’d been any big contrarian lobbying effort, some of the lobbyists’ unconvinced targets would have made a big stink about it. Heartland mails out its reports to legislators nationwide, but that’s about the biggest lobbying effort I’ve heard of. This lobbying activity is an extrapolation from the money warmists infer is being spent on political activity in general by opponents of carbon tax legislation.
Gore is using the smear technique employed by environmental savior groups to conflate money spent on all political activities by, say, Big Oil, with the lesser amount of money devoted exclusively to the climate change issue. And he’s conflating all money received by free-market think tanks with the lesser amount of money spent on the climate change issue. (E.g., Heartland is spending maybe 15% or 20% of its $6.5 million in annual revenue on the climate issue.)
As for the first three, the media is 90% or more on-board the warmist bandwagon. Check out the slant of articles on the topic in the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature. Playing the victim card here is preposterous. The MSM is 95% on board. The public hasn’t been confused by any false balance.
“They are financing pseudoscientists whose job is to manufacture doubt.” There are plenty of unfinanced scientists who are doubtful, and said so. See The Deniers. And anyway, such an ad hom doesn’t dispose of the doubters’ arguments.
“[They are] buying elected officials wholesale.” That’s raving. If Big Business could buy votes this easily, they could stop every Democratic Party program they wanted. Politicians in the US who refused to vote for cap-and-trade were concerned about two things: That it wouldn’t make any sense to punish ourselves economically if China wasn’t on board with the program–it would merely be a gesture. And that it would punish our economy and push more manufacturing abroad to Asia, where emissions are worse.
Gore again:

But wait! The good guys transgressed the rules of decorum, as evidenced in their private e-mails that were stolen and put on the Internet. The referee [the media] is all over it: Penalty! Go to your corner!

More raving. Climategate was studiously ignored for two weeks after it occurred, and thereafter got only dismissive mentions in the media.
