Former Vice President Al Gore will give a lecture on climate change on Tuesday, April 23, in honor of former Senior Fellow Stephen Schneider, a world-renowned climate scientist who died in 2010.
Former Vice President Al Gore, chairman of The Climate Reality Project, will share his thoughts on addressing climate change within our democracy and take questions from students at Stanford University on Tuesday, April 23, when he gives a lecture in honor of Stephen H. Schneider, the Stanford professor and world-renowned climate scientist who died in 2010.
The program, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:15 p.m.) in Memorial Auditorium on the Stanford campus. Tickets are free, but seating is limited. Stanford students and postdoctoral fellows need only show their Stanford identification card to be admitted. All others should contact the Stanford Ticket Office on the second floor of Tresidder Union or by calling (650) 725-2787.
“Al Gore worked closely with Steve to sound the alarm about climate change, long before the average person understood there was a problem,” said Terry Root, a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, which is sponsoring the event along with the Stanford Speakers Bureau and two student groups on campus: Students in Government and Students for a Sustainable Stanford. Root frequently collaborated with her late husband Steve Schneider on understanding environmental consequences of climate change.
The title of Gore’s address is “Peril and Opportunity: Solving the Climate Crisis and Reinvigorating Democracy.” He is the author of the best-sellers “Earth in the Balance,” “An Inconvenient Truth,” “The Assault on Reason” and “Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis,” as well as a new book titled “The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change.” He is the co-recipient, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for “informing the world of the dangers posed by climate change.”
Gore was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982 and the U.S. Senate in 1984 and 1990. He was inaugurated as the 45th vice president of the United States on Jan. 20, 1993, and served eight years.
Steve Schneider was a leader in science communication and a world expert on interdisciplinary climate science. At the time of his death, he was the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute. His most recent work centered on communicating the possible risks, vulnerabilities and impacts of climate change to ensure that leaders were sufficiently informed to apply smart risk management strategies in climate-policy decision making.
Schneider founded the interdisciplinary journal “Climatic Change” and continued to serve as its editor-in-chief until his death. He consulted with federal agencies and/or White House staff in every U.S. presidential administration since the Nixon era. He was an author of the first four assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Clever of Gore to agree to speak at a memorial event of this nature. If anyone makes a noise in the audience or asks awkward and nasty questions they run the risk of appearing insensitive and disrespectful of the memory of Steve Schneider.

All this global warming and climate alarmism reminds me of “The Sokal Affair” which you can read about on Wikipedia. The way lefties all recite and repeat the alarmist meme and how the MSM will “publish an article liberally salted with nonsense if it (a) sounded good and (b) flattered the editors’ ideological preconceptions” [taken from the wiki article]. I have a friend who is a pretty big name here in the Detroit area skeptical community, he is a big skeptic and atheist like me, except he is “about as liberal as you can get” as he described himself. But he believes in AGW and in my eyes that is not a true skeptic because he has not done his homework and dug up the facts.

The Stanford.edu article that Laurie Bowen cites, says; “”He had been struggling with a health problem for maybe seven years now and all of his friends were warning him to slow down and he was so dedicated to getting the climate science right and getting the public properly educated on it that he absolutely refused to slow down,” said biologist Paul Ehrlich, who shared bird-watching expeditions around the globe with Schneider.”
So I presume that Ehrlich and Schneider jetted around the globe on airplanes, creating CO2 along the way. And I take it that elites like them [and Gore] should be allowed to fly on jets but deniers like me should not, is that what they want?

I have to agree that this is more Gore doublespeak. I’m willing to wager his vision goes something like this: Our democracy must be “modernized” to allow for immediate government action on issues where “the science is settled”. A “modern” democracy cannot allow deniers and flat-earthers to delay or subvert government control over anything and everything anthropogenic, or whatever the government defines to be anthropogenic.

Stephen was also one of the usual suspects with the astronomical Dr. Sagan & Ehrlich touting Nuclear Winter. But in private conversation, he was more circumspect about the physical assumptions behind the group’s “science”, as for instance regarding soot.

I went to your Wiki link on the religious views of Sir Isaac & was surprised to find no mention of his last published work, The Revised History of Ancient Kingdoms, over forty years in the writing. That book alone makes your point re. Mann & Spencer, since Newton believed that the creation occurred about the same time as computed by Bishop Ussher, ie less than 7000 years ago.
Within a few decades scientists (eg. Buffon) started to question the age of the Earth based upon biblical chronologies, but that important development in geology, biology, astronomy & other sciences hadn’t yet begun at the time of Newton’s death. The devout Danish Lutheran turned Catholic priest & bishop Steno (d. 1686) had however already founded the sciences of geology & paleontology.
So as not to have posted totally off topic, here is a sample question I sent a friend’s daughter now a senior at LSJU:
“Depending upon which temperature series you chose & despite continued increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, Earth’s climate has trended sideways or cooled since before Stanford undergrads were born, were babies or toddlers. Except its not a memorial for Steven Schneider. Its an Al Gore type speech given in honor of Steven Schneider to be held at the Stanford Memorial Auditorium. Other than the ‘Steven and I were buddies’ and ‘Steven would have wanted this’ obligatory remarks, I wouldn’t expect much more than maybe a moment of silence.
Then its off to the races for Al’s address. It will be interesting to learn how he plans to ‘reinvigorate democracy’, since we all presently live under a constitutional republic which is guaranteed. Perhaps he will propose a constitutional amendment. Of course ‘solving the climate crisis’ is a big order as well, but I’m sure it has something to do with not burning fossil fuel.
I Hate to be a spoiler for anyone planning to attend, but I don’t really think this address will be anything other than a photo op for Al and a future claim of being a Stanford Lecturer. Oh, and the lecture fee of course.

Al says, “When I helped initiate the Internet..” A brief, sound bite answer, but obliquely refering to funding bills he co-authored to provide funding to expand the DARPANET to civilian use. Got to be kind to old Al, after all…how many other things has he done right?
I plan to attend if I can get a ticket. Gore’s movie said he deduced that CO2 caused warming because there was a very long-term correlation. Yet, the warmist models say that CO2 wasn’t sufficient to be a factor in the warming until around 1950 or 1960. Furthermore, we now know that temperature has been level for 16 years while CO2 rose. I’d love to ask Gore about this, but doubt that I’ll get a chance

They are “alarmists” by their own self-description. This is why I think it is most appropriate to designate the fervent agitators for urgent “action” on climate change as “Alarmists” — that is the best label for what distinguishes their view from others (including varieties of “lukewarmers” as well as those more critical of AGW). The most important distinction for all of these debates, both scientific and policy, is between who thinks there should be grave “alarm” now vs. all other varieties of views which allow for more time for research and debate. This also helps to explain why claims of a vast “consensus” of scientists on AGW are worse than meaningless (actively misleading) if the issues are not posed in terms of grave alarm and danger. Plenty of people both in and out of climate science think that some form(s) of human impact on climate *may* occur without thinking we see grounds for serious ***Alarm*** ***Alarm*** ***Alarm***

And, if there’d been any big contrarian lobbying effort, some of the lobbyists’ unconvinced targets would have made a big stink about it. Politicians in the US who refused to vote for cap-and-trade were concerned about two things: That it wouldn’t make any sense to punish ourselves economically if China wasn’t on board with the program–it would merely be a gesture. And that it would punish our economy and push more manufacturing abroad to Asia, where emissions are worse.
